Alternative championships - Jim Clark Cup (early 80s style)

Post by James1978 »

As a big fan of these "Alternative Championships" which are often done on here, I noted there was one done for non-turbos only for 1988, as a follow-up to the real one that was done in 1987, but what about if it had been done in the early 80s when turbos were being phased in instead of out?

There's little point in doing any for pre-1981 when only Renault had turbos, or for 1984 when only Tyrrell had non-turbos only to be banned anyway, but 1981 - 83 should be good.

I'm including V12's in here like Ligier and Alfa ran in 1981 and 1982, not just Cosworths!

1981 results to follow soon!

1981 Jim Clark Cup standings:

Nelson Piquet 61 (4 wins, 2 2nds, 1 3rd)
Alan Jones 57 (4 wins, 2 2nds, 2 3rds)
Carlos Reutemann 53 (2 wins, 4 2nds, 2 3rds)
Jacques Laffite 52 (3 wins, 3 2nds, 1 3rd)
John Watson 36 (2 wins, 2 2nds)
Elio De Angelis 26 (2 3rds, 4 4ths)
Hector Rebaque 14 (2 3rds, 1 4th)
Eddie Cheever 14 (1 3rd, 2 4ths)
Nigel Mansell 13 (2 3rds, 1 4th)
Riccardo Patrese 12 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Bruno Giacomelli 11 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Marc Surer 7 (2 4ths)
Mario Andretti 7 (1 4th, 1 5th)
Andrea De Cesaris 4 (2 5ths)
Patrick Tambay 3 (1 5th)
Eliseo Salazar 2 (1 5th)
Slim Borgudd 1
Siegfried Stohr 1

Not much changes really, but Jones seems to benefit most, and De Angelis is really a quiet achiever!

Other notes: No point awarded at Monaco for 6th, as there were only 5 non-turbo classified finishers.
Surer and Salazar's points were all for Ensign, and Tambay's were all for Theodore.

1982 to come soon!

1982 Jim Clark Cup!

Keke Rosberg 67 (4 wins, 3 2nds, 2 3rds)
John Watson 53 (4 wins, 2 2nds)
Michele Alboreto 50 (2 wins, 3 2nds, 1 3rd)
Niki Lauda 42 (2 wins, 3 2nds)
Elio De Angelis 32 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rds)
Riccardo Patrese 22 (2 wins, 1 3rd)
Derek Daly 21 (3 3rds, 1 4th)
Eddie Cheever 18 (1 2nd, 3 3rds) - no other points finishes apart from podiums!
Nigel Mansell 15 (1 2nd, 1 3rd, 1 4th, 1 5th)
Carlos Reutemann 9 (1 win)
Bruno Giacomelli 9 (1 3rd)
Andrea De Cesaris 8 (1 2nd)
Marc Surer 8 (2 4ths)
Jean-Pierre Jarier 6 (1 2nd)
Jacques Laffite 6 (1 3rd)
Mauro Baldi 6 (1 4th)
Brian Henton 6 (2 5ths)
Eliseo Salazar 5 (1 3rd)
Manfred Winkelhock 3 (1 4th)
Chico Serra 3 (1 5th)
Slim Borgudd 2 (1 5th)
Jochen Mass 2 (2 6ths)
Roberto Guerrero 1 (1 6th)

Notes:

Keke Rosberg is actually a much more comfortable winner than for real - his win at Dijon gave him an unassailable 20-point lead over Lauda, Watson only rescued runner-up by a very good last 2 races. And the points total for Rosberg doesn't include Brazil which he was disqualified from!

Alboreto's points total really impressed me, as did Daly's.

Brabham were ineligible for most of the year but they did run a few races with Cosworths, but only Patrese scored with them - Piquet being DQ'd from Brazil totally wipes him from the standings!

Only THREE classified finishers (Alboreto, Jarier and Salazar) at Imola!

Unrejectification for Slim Borgudd based on this and his 1981 results!

I've done 1983 too - not going to post the full results as by the end of the year there were so few non-turbos in the field that you basically had to just finish to get a podium!

But the "winner" was Keke Rosberg despite missing South Africa having got turbos, John Watson was a clear second. At the end of the year you had "winners" such as Danny Sullivan's Tyrrell, Jean-Pierre Jarier's Ligier and Thierry Boutsen's Arrows!!!

But I wonder if you make a "turbo-only" championship that year, would it change the final results among the front-runners?

OK - here are results of the 1983 turbo-only championship, I think I'll call it the "Jean-Pierre Jabouille Trophy" with him being the first ever driver of a turbo car, the results are as follows:

Alain Prost 71 (4 wins, 4 2nds, 2 3rds)
Nelson Piquet 70 (5 wins, 2 2nds, 2 3rds)
Rene Arnoux 58 (4 wins, 2 2nds, 1 3rd)
Patrick Tambay 45 (1 win, 3 2nds, 3 3rds)
Eddie Cheever 25 (1 2nd, 3 3rds)
Riccardo Patrese 20 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Andrea De Cesaris 16 (2 2nds, 1 4th)
Derek Warwick 15 (1 3rd, 2 4ths)
Mauro Baldi 14 (4 4ths)
Nigel Mansell 9 (1 3rd, 1 4th, 1 5th)
Bruno Giacomelli 6 ( 1 3rd)
manfred Winkelhock 5 (2 5ths)
Elio De Angelis/Stefan Johansson/Keke Rosberg all 2 (1 5th)
Corrado Fabi 1

The interesting note here is that Prost's total score was 74 but he scored 12 times and had to discard a 4th place - also given in reality Piquet slowed up in South Africa to finish 3rd to assure the campionship, he would have had to finish 2nd in this championship to beat Prost's total, which I'm sure he would have if he'd had to! :)
