Tobacco Sponsors

Post by Jeroen Krautmeir »

Remember the good old days? Where the words Marlboro, West, Gauloises, Benson and Hedges, Lucky Strike etc were normal to see? In my opinion, Formula 1 needs tobacco sponsors back on the cars. I mean, ever since the cigar sponsor stickers were taken off, there hasn't been the slightest impact on smokers. Maybe, a bit, and when I say a bit, I mean like less than a percent. But, really, the beauty of cars is gone, and we need it back! Teams need money, and we need nice cars to see!

But F1R, what is your opinion on tobacco advertising in Formula One?

I think it should return, the sponsors suited the cars well, especially Marlboro on the Mclaren and Ferrari, West on the Mclaren and of course, Benson and Hedges on the Jordan.

It wouldn't be bad; perhaps new teams would get new sources of income this way. Plus, on the personal side, I loved each and every Marlboro liveried car it has existed, and I hate smoking and tobacco (though if anyone wants to smoke, he/she has the right to do so).
Oh, yes, Martini sponsorship would look great on the Ferraris too...

I always thought it was a shame Toyota was sponsored by Panasonic instead of Castrol. Probably would have made them faster too.

I am of course refering to these...

On that note...if Peugeot should ever make an F1 comeback they should use the same livery that was on their 1999 Peugeot 206 WRC prototype:

Mark Courtney. It's not a WRC-spec Celica GT-Four, it's a rally prepared ST205 (Group N basically).

If tobacco sponsorship comes back, we could see a fondmetal team malaysia in black and gold john player special livery, just like the good old days.

The cars could be sponsored by brothels, alcohol, and cigarettes all at the same time for all I care. If someone is willing to foot the bill to sponsor a car, then their logo should appear on the car.

Would love to see Playdude (as it is referred to in the Simpsons) on the Virgins - Virgin Manor etc.

Tobacco suited the 80's and before, when it reflected the lifestyle, altho more alcomohol sponsors would be nice to see

Trulli's wine on the Lotus for instance

I've always had issues with cigarette sponsorship. Even before I knew that cigarettes caused cancer, I hated them simply because they absolutely reek. When I wasa kid, I always wondered why my heroes advertised something so smelly.

I don't think there should be any limit to what sponsorships the teams carry. Unfortunately with the EU law, its been damn near impossible for any tobacco sponsorship in any intercontinental series.

Like Phoenix, I agree that if one wants to smoke, they will - influcenced by advertising. Of the smokers I know, none smoke a brand due to F1 sponsorship and many of them watch no motorsport at all. Research shows that alcohol is more dangerous than tobacco yet there are only a few restrictions about that, generally involving school areas or France. The only reversal to that is smoking makes you stink and alcohol makes you stink only when you exhale.

The funny part is that smoking is still allowed at grands prix, as far as I know. The vast number of people puffing on their fags at Indy 2007 prompted my friend to ask why Americans smoke so much

i'm looking forward to see sponsoring of porn websites/magazines and some other disturbing stuff P**** enlargement mclaren mercedes for example would sound nice :? (i hope those spambots will stay away if that's allowed, but i fear that it won't help)

well, without tobacco sponsorship, f1 would have never gotten a comercially interesting sport, and we'd still be on the level of professionalism of the seventies or something like that

Carling generally wouldn't, its only a national beer, even more so with Buckie.

International beers like Carling's parent brand Coors tho have no excuse

Maybe the Retired Nigerian General Who Needs Your Help Getting A Million Pounds Out Of The Country And Is Offering A Substantial Commission could sponsor the potential return of TWR?

There is a way to get the black and gold even without JPS... Lotus oughta strike a sponsorship deal with UPS :D

Except unlike Dale Jarrett, Trulli and Kovalainen won't want to race the big brown truck.

I happened to like this paintjob. NASCAR has better liveries than F1, just based on the real estate available to the artists.

NASCARs would look good if they didn't have a ridiculous amount of sponsors on the front quarter.
