Raw pace - 6.0: Got the most out of slow cars, but sucked when he got given a car that was at least mixing it in the midfield.
Strategy - 4.0: Was never really in a position to make his strategy count - the one time he was he got lost in the pit-lane and got a drive-through penalty...
Personal reliability - 9.0: Would keep it on the road...until the car blew up in his face and rendered his best skill as a driver pointless.
Entertainment - 8.0: Punting out Villeneuve of Monaco 1996 whilst several laps down gains him marks here
Personal sympathy - HWNSNBM: No number is high enough here. Along with Roberto Moreno, they need to make a Reject World Championship, just so he gets a piece of silverware that he worked like hell for, for over a decade. Personal confession...I actually cried as well when his car broke down at the Nurburgring in '99.
Give me a break, I was six!!

Luca Badoer--

Raw pace-- 8.75: For someone who was totally washed up, he did a great job in the Ferrari. Made every other car he was in look better than it was.
Strategy-- 5: As far as I know, he didn't really excel or fail in this department...
Personal reliability-- 9: He could bring the car home provided something didn't break.
Entertainment-- 7.5: Mobile Chicannery! :D
Personal sympathy-- (HWNSNBM)^2 (whatever HWNSNBM's is squared): Finally meets his dream... drive for Ferrari. Oh, did I mention it was the worst Ferrari since 1992?... and he hadn't been racing in 10 years...
Check out the TM Master Cup Series on Youtube...
...or check out my random retro IndyCar clips.

LUCA BADOER

Raw Pace - 6.0
Terrible in '09 with the Ferrari but the rest of his career he did alright I guess when you look at the cars he drove.

Strategic Ability - 4.0
Strategy plays little part in your game if you're at the back 24/7

Personal Reliability - 9.0
Tester = reliable driver usually. It is certainly the case here.

Entertainment Value - 3.5
Apart from the odd notable drive he never really appeared on my radar as a viewer.

Personal Sympathy - 8.5
Never cared much for him until the '09 Ferrari stint that gave him the toughest job in the world for a few weeks. I think he could have handled himself better in this period though.

LUCA BADOER

Raw Pace - 5.5
Solid in the lower order cars. Dreadful at Fezza in '09

Strategic Ability - 5.0
Can't say either way, he never had to show it

Personal Reliability - 7.5
Ferrari tester during their unbeatable years accounts for something; 2009 does not.

Entertainment Value - 6.0
Occasionally got TV coverage for the odd mistake here and there.

Personal Sympathy - 10.0
His best years were wasted, and how can you not have sympathy after seeing him go out of the 1999 European GP when in the points?

How big will the next driver be?:

*** GIOVANNI LAVAGGI ***

Raw Pace - 1.5
Even with a Minardi of 1996, failing to meet the 107% rule is not something to do

Strategic Ability - 1.0
Okay... :|

Personal Reliability - 2.5
A considerable number of his 7 races had self-induced retirements, but for being completely out of his place, he actually survived pretty well

Entertainment Value - 5.5
Being involved in what might've been the pass of 1996, he gains half a point bonus from average

Personal Sympathy - 9.0
A bona-fide reject, showing exactly what this site is all about ... perhaps he really was bigger than people think

GIOVANNI LAVAGGI

For the first time in this thread, I was not watching F1 in the days of Mr. Lavaggi so I feel it would be wrong of me to cast an opinion on him.

GIOVANNI JOHNNY CARWASH LAVAGGI
Raw pace-What? Nought, you say? Yeah, me too.
Strategic ability-What? Nought, you say again? Yeah, me too. But this is half Minardi's fault.
Personal reliability-4.0
Entertaining value-4.0, only saves a nought because of the incident with Schumacher in Estoril 1996.
Personal sympathy-What? Ten, you say? Yeah, me too. He answered a member of this forum!

**GIOVANNI LAVAGGI**

Raw Pace - Minus 4 - Jonathan Palmer could not have described him better. Desperately Slow.
Strategic Ability - 3.0 - Can't say much about strategic ability.
Personal Reliability - 4.0 - Can't be that reliable, he was pretty useless.
Entertainment Value - 10.0 - Very rejectful driving, most rejects will score high on this.
Personal Sympathy - 5.0 - I don't sympathise with him that much, he wasn't unlucky, he was just shite.

P.S. After some more posts on Johnny Carwash, can I suggest Olivier Grouillard as the next reject?
I like the way Snrub thinks!

@redbulljack: I would like to do Grouillard but I'll need to take counter-measures to the lack of interest now, so I'll have to go with a modern reject this time - but he's French as well:

*** SÉBASTIEN BOURDAIS ***

Raw Pace - 7.0
Had some fairly decent showings in qualifying, wasn't far off Vettel in Monza and of course P1 in Q1 in Spa.

Strategic Ability - 5.0
To be honest, he was fairly average there, if STR came up with something useable he used it.

Personal Reliability - 5.0
Retired rarely but as 2009 showed he was nowhere near a team leader and his complaints were not helpful in improving the cars either.

Entertainment Value - 7.0
To be honest: IMO he has whined more than the usual driver's, this complaint is thrown at (Hamilton, R. Schumacher etc.) and that was partly what made him amusing to watch.

Personal Sympathy - 4.0
He could and should have archived more, but I feel for the biggest loss of his career: stalling in Monza.

Sebastien Bourdais

Raw Pace - 6.0 - Not bad pace but not particularly great either.
Strategic Ability - 5.0 - Not particularly bad, the only strategy I ever saw him use was staying out on the last lap of Spa '08, and that cost him.
Personal Reliability - 6.5 - A fairly reliable driver who at least could bring the car home.
Entertainment Value - 4.0 - Not a driver who I would describe as entertaining.
Personal Sympathy - 6.5 - I had sympathy for him in 2008 as he should have scored about 15 points. In 2009, I quickly got bored of his whining but I felt sorry for him being booted out. At least he scored 2 points in a sh*tbox Toro Rosso where Nakajima failed to score a point all season in what was a pretty good Williams.

*** SÉBASTIEN BOURDAIS ***

Raw Pace - 7.5
P1 in Q1 in Spa, and also in Valencia too I believe. Sometimes had the beating of wunderkid Vettel, but not quite the pace you'd expect from a 4-times Indycar champ.

Strategic Ability - 4.5
Don't really remember anything about this apart from him heavily losing out at Spa in 2008 by staying out of slicks on the last lap of Spa.

Personal Reliability - 6.0
OK, but nothing special. Got unlucky when in a few good positions.

Entertainment Value - 4.0
Aside from quali, he was never particularly entertaining or wild. Eddie Jordan always made comments about him being at a disadvantage by driving with glasses, so I suppose that is something.

Personal Sympathy - 7.5
Quite a bit actually, because if a few things had gone his way, he'd have got a few notable results. He would have benefited from starting out at a slightly better team than Toro Rosso.

Raw Pace - 6.5
Had the match of Vettel for a while, but the car was seemingly developed towards Vettel's liking

Strategic Ability - 5.5
Not really clear - Spa 2008 tyre mistake an obvious mistake, but some other times scraped in the points.

Personal Reliability - 4.5
Wasted some opportunities, like stalling at Monza on the grid

Entertainment Value - 4.0
A complainer, and not really a entertaining driver in terms of style either

Personal Sympathy - 7.0
Had some bad luck, particularly the engine failure at his first race in Melbourne, but went downhill from there.

Raw Pace - 7.8?
Had the speed to be good in F1, but he was stuck in a Toro Rosso that only gave a crap about his teammates.

Strategic Ability - 5
Played Australia 2008 and Monaco 2009 quite well, but his Valencia 2008 and Spa 2008 calls seemed... odd. Very hit or miss whenever he tried to try something out of the ordinary...

Personal Reliability - 7
Kept it on the black stuff unless chopped by Heikki Kovalainen or rain came.

Entertainment Value - 100
The Master of Hilarious Whining.

Personal Sympathy - 8.5
Got too acclimatized to Champ Cars, which at the time did not really require a driver to actually develop a car. Once he got used to the 2008 regulations, the 2009 regulations threw him a curveball, and since he did not have the development skills and had a teammate that would look good no matter what, Bourdais was pretty screwed from the get-go.

Raw Pace - 7.5
He kept up with Vettel which is no mean feat.

Strategic Ability - 5.5
A bit inconsistant, sometimes he would be right on the money but other times completely off. It didn't help that he was a rookie driver in a team with few experienced staff members.

Personal Reliability - 5.0
He almost seemed to enjoy things going wrong for him. It gave him something to complain about.

Entertainment Value - 3.5
Not really much fun. Complained a lot which is a bit annoying to watch.

Personal Sympathy - 6.5
Some really bad luck which would have made me like him is cancelled out by all of the complaining he would do afterwards. He deserved a shot at F1 but I dont particularly want him back over some of the other drivers cast aside in recent years.

Raw Pace - 7.0
Had some speed, but didn't know when or how to use it. Wasn't far off Vettel most of the time, which makes him look decent at least.

Strategic Ability - 5.0
Meh.

Personal Reliability - 6.0
Would bring the car home in one piece...sometimes.

Entertainment Value - 10
I couldn't stop pointing and laughing when he started crying his eyes out after Spa 2008, and then agreed with James Allen that the Germans are a bunch of unsophisticated sausage munching arseholes. He may whine alot, but occasionally you couldn't help laughing at some of it.

Personal Sympathy - 7.5
With golden boy Vettel as his team-mate he never had a chance of equal treatment. He was like Robin to Vettel's Batman (except he complained alot more). Maybe F1 just didn't suit him, because he's been fast in everything else he's driven (F3000 and ChampCar champion, probably future Superleague champion and took pole at Le Mans this year. Circumstances went against him, especially considering he scored 2 points in a sh*tbox when Nakajima scored 0 in a decent car and still got fired.

Raw Pace - 7.5
I think he was naturally fast, but was just either to nervous to use it, or just forgot it was there.

Strategic Ability - 4.0
Err, what exactly has he done? :P

Personal Reliability - 8.5
He retired 7 times out of 28. That's not bad at all.

Entertainment Value - 10
Spa 2008. Nuff' said.

Personal Sympathy - 8.5
Had he been given more time, I think he would have been able to show what he was capable of. His CART and F3000 career statistics are amazing.

Before we'll take on Grouillard, we have another modern reject to deal with:

*** SAKON YAMAMOTO ***

Raw Pace - 5.5
In itself he was not the god of speed, but 7th on the fastest lap table in Brazil '06 sure means some talent.

Strategic Ability - 4.0
Well, when he was at the back, he stayed there, so...

Personal Reliability - 2.0
A reliable Japanese driver is difficult in itself, and Yamamoto really was no exception - and I really think the only reason HRT wants him as tester is money

Entertainment Value - 5.0
Never got that much screentime, but still disappointing in this topic.

Personal Sympathy - 5.0
Blandest Japanese driver of all time

Yamamoto

Raw Pace - 4.5: Not good, at all. Maybe the neck issue held him back from giving his all?

Strategic Ability - 4: Meh... possibly the neck affected his CNS, and he couldn't calculate tactics on the move?

Personal Reliability - 3: He retired a fair bit, often by his own cause. Perhaps his neck just couldn't stand the pressure.

Entertainment Value - 5: Can't have enough Japanese really, even if they're terrible. You never know what they'll do, or what'll happen to them; their head might fly off at any moment.

Personal Sympathy - 10: Neck.

Sakon Yamamoto

Raw Pace - 3.5 - Well off the pace of his teammates, even though Sato and Sutil are decent drivers.
Strategic Ability - 4.5 - We never saw much of his strategy so once again, meh.
Personal Reliability - 4.0 - Retired from too many races, some of them from driver error.
Entertainment Value - 5.0 - The second most boring Japanese driver ever behind Kazuki Nakajima.
Personal Sympathy - 6.0 - This is mainly because he's a reject, he wasn't unlucky in any way, just crap.

Sakon Yamamoto

Raw Pace - 3.5 - Very little pace, even at Spyker.
Strategic Ability - 4.0 - Always difficult to say with backmarkers.
Personal Reliability - 2.5 - Didn't really bring it home often, which is the most important thing for the lower teams.
Entertainment Value - 0.5 - I barely remember he exists.
Personal Sympathy - 3.5 - Just plain dull.

Sakon Yamamoto

Raw pace-- 3.0: Just not fast.
Strategic ability-- 5.0: Never had a chance to use it.
Personal reliability-- 1.5: Binned a few cars, which is bad enough... but the dodgy neck is borderline hilarity.
Entertainment value-- 7.0: Japanese drivers seldom underwhelm here.
Personal sympathy: 3.5: It would be a lot worse if he wasn't a part of Super Aguri.

Raw Pace: 4.0. Well he wasn't the best by far but he wasn't the worst either
Strategic Ability: 4.0. Usually retired before the pitstops
Personal Reliability: 3.5. Refer to previous point
Entertainment Value: 4.5. He and KazNak are the 2 more boring Japanese drivers ever... and that's not a good thing.
Personal Sympathy: 4.0. Sakon who?

Raw Pace: 2.40. He wasn't as bad as Ide but a lot worse than Montagny...
Strategic Ability: 1.0. What strategy?
Personal Reliability: 0.0. He made BTCC drivers look like clean, smooth drivers.
Entertainment Value: 3.0. Would have been more fun if he had a Jean-Louis Schlesser moment or took other cars out. All three of the points are for his neck.
Personal Sympathy: 0.0. He made me wish Montagny was still in the second SOOPA AGURI

Well, by popular demand now:

*** OLIVIER GROUILLARD ***

Raw Pace - 5.5
Fairly decent at least for a reject, forced himself further than his car sometimes.

Strategic Ability - 5.0
Meh.

Personal Reliability - 3.0
Unfortunately very close with Mr. Accidents, so...

Entertainment Value - 7.5
Always good for making blocking scenes, but not one to make movies about.

Personal Sympathy - 5.0
Switzerland on my racers' nation map.

**Olivier Grouillard**

Raw Pace - 6.5 - Generally outpaced Rene Arnoux in the Ligier in 1989 and put a sh*tbox Osella 8th on the grid at Phoenix 1990 as well as 10th in a sh*tbox Fondmetal at Mexico 1991. His rating would have been higher but he failed quite badly compared to De Crasheris in 1992 (That combination must have pissed people off)

Strategic Ability - 5.0 - Drove for Ligier and Tyrrell, but drove for AGS and Osella.

Personal Reliability - 5.0 - Not his strong point as he was quite a dangerous driver, that's one of the reasons I liked him.

Entertainment Value - 10.0 - A blocker, and referred to by James Hunt as 'a problem', a compliment coming from him. He always got in the way and generally caused trouble for frontrunners often ruining their race. What's not to like?

Personal Sympathy - 8.5 - Should have been given a better seat, apart from his 1992 Tyrrell, which wasn't a bad car. His reputation for being a pain in the arse was well deserved though. Often got close to the points and could have escaped the F1 driver's equivalent to eternal damnation.
I like the way Snrub thinks!

Well, the reject special didn't quite work out (although if you still want to rate Olivier feel free to do so), so we are going with world champions now and start with the hero of my childhood:

*** MIKA HÄKKINEN ***

Raw Pace - 9.5
Very good at this game, one of the best. Especially his 1998 and 1999 poles were one of a kind.

Strategic Ability - 9.5
Surely my memory has taken some damage here and become selective, but I cannot remember big screw-ups that really were his faults.

Personal Reliability - 8.0
Well, he finished often enough to become World champion twice but things like Monza are just not wise things to do.

Entertainment Value - 10.0
Charismatic person, responsible for perhaps the best single overtake in F1, the "worthy opponent" to Schumacher, so...

Personal Sympathy - 10.0
As I said, he was the hero of my childhood. Spent many Sunday afternoons watching him duke it out with by German TV ever-hyped Schumacher and wishing for him to beat that arrogant guy (I really didn't like Michael back then...)

Sooooooo, time for me to give this a try:

Mika Häkkinen

Raw Pace - 8.5
Often very, very quick, but there were days at which he might have done a little bit better.

Strategic Ability - 8
Not much I can think of in terms of sensational strategic ability - but can't think of any mistakes, either.

Personal Reliability - 9
Also thought of Monza. And that is really the only mistake I can think of. So he must have been quite reliable.

Entertainment Value - 8
I dont really remember him as a hugely entertaining driver. But I always liked his Mercedes and Haribo TV ads - and then, of course, there was that race in Spa...

Personal Sympathy - 9.5
Not liking Schumacher came quite naturally to me when I was a young F1 fan. As you may know (or have guessed) Austrians are not generally big fans of German sportspeople - there is quite a bit of rivalry (or, rather, envy on our part). I grew to like Schumacher a bit more when I got older (and learned to respect people for who they are and not to disrespect them for where they are from. Anyway, different story...). But even without Schumacher as his opponent I still think Häkkinen was a nice guy and worthy of much personal sympathy.

Raw Pace - 9

Bloody fast, specially in even years (92, 94, 96, 98, 00). Better in qualifyings than in races. And better in dry track than in wet. In inspired days, he could beat Schumacher as for speed quite easily.

Strategic Ability - 7

Not a driver to be remembered regarding of this issue. By his time, however, McLaren wasn't rulling in this way. Most of his excellent results were earned due to his pure speed on the track.

Personal Reliability - 6,5

A smooth character, but not as mentally strong as Schumacher, Alonso, Montoya or even Raikkonen. Actually, in moments like Monza '99 (crying like a baby after spinning out) or the whole 2001 season (some rumours say he was facing some undisclosed problems with alcohol), he looked quite weak and fragile.

Entertainment Value - 8

It depends on what you are expecting from motorsport. If you want to see pure talent on driving a car fastly or completing a lap much quicker than anybody else, he's the man. But if you want to see a person that wins spectacular sennaesque races, I wouldn't suggest him as the guy to follow.

Personal Sympathy - 9

Many unfair people used to say he was extremely quiet and boring, but that was all about his finnish shyness. As a matter of fact, people that lived with him in the paddock praised him for being very friendly and sympathetic. And McLaren loved him. I imagine him as a very nice guy to drink with or to play cards with.

Mika Häkkinen

Raw Pace - 9
Blindingly quick. End of.

Strategic Ability - 7
Schumacher got the better of him sometimes, but then again who hasn't been on the wrong end of a Schumacher-Brawn strategic decision.

Personal Reliability - 7.5
Hmmmmm, could go off the boil a little sometimes, especially later on in his career. Otherwise dragged Lotus to a few glories in their dying days, and also got McLaren through the Ford/Peugeot era with at least a crumb of credibility.

Entertainment Value - 8.5
Hakkinen was exciting to watch simply because he was so fast. Then there was that pass on Schumacher.

Personal Sympathy - 8.5
I don't think that a driver who beat Schumacher fair and square twice needs a lot of sympathy. But yes, definitely one of the drivers I miss the most.

RAW PACE - 9
He's a very fast driver and nothing proves this better than his qualifying efforts, especially when McLaren was the team to beat.

STRATEGIC ABILITY - 7
Nothing particularly memorable, be it in a good or a bad sense.

PERSONAL RELIABILITY - 7
Not as reliable as Michael Schumacher, but still nothing terrible.

ENTERTAINING VALUE - 8
Being a very fast driver, he was always entretaining to watch. His overtaking move on Michael Schumacher in Belgium 2000 was one of the highlights of that season.

PERSONAL SYMPATHY - 8
He wasn't the funniest or more extroverted driver in the paddock, but he wasn't as closed or downright moronic as Räikkönen. In fact, he was a nice guy.

Murray Walker had a lump in his throat back in 1996. I hope you don't. Here's the next driver:

*** DAMON HILL ***

Raw Pace - 7.5
Good at qualifying but not a legend either. There's a reason why he has more wins than poles.

Strategic Ability - 7.5
Again, quite decent but nothing which really could make the difference between a win or a lower points finish.

Personal Reliability - 9.5
And this is where he actually excelled. This was what won him his world title and made him the contender after Senna's accident. Only Monza 1996 costs him half a point.

Entertainment Value - 7.5
Well, giving Jordan their first win is always worth bonus points. The whole tragic loss with Arrows makes for good stories. But Hill really lacks breathtaking overtaking maneuvres.

Personal Sympathy - 8.5
He could have been just as popular as Häkkinen with the child version of me, with the whole Schumi's rival thing. Unfortunately I was too young for that. But still, he's a nice guy alright.

Raw Pace - 8

It depended on the time. In F3000, he was considered the fastest man of the grid. Wild and quick, but absolutely luckless. In F1, he was very quick inm 1993, irregular in 1994, bore in 1995, perfect in 1996, above average in 1997, Jordan's savior in 1998 and nothing in 1999. I rate him 8 because of his best days.

Strategic Ability - 6

When he had to rely on strategy, he went nowhere. Most of the races he won he managed to because of his pure speed (and also of his car). I must admit also that Williams didn't help him a lot.

Personal Reliability - 7,5

When everything was going perfectly, Hill was a completely trustable driver, absolutely able to finish the race in an excellent positions without any scares. However, when something got out of the rails, he lost the concentration easily.

Entertainment Value - 5

Kind of driver that won most of his races starting from pole position and leading virtually all the laps hitherto the finish line. His two most exciting races were Suzuka/94 and Spa/98, in which it rained monsoon style on the track. In these cases, the excitement came from the ability of surviving such hard conditions.

Personal Sympathy - 8,5

A gentleman. But he wasn't perfect. He actually had the bad and stupid habitude of ignoring reject drivers. Ricardo Rosset once told that during the briefings, Michael Schumacher, the driver who was considered arrogant and antisocial, was always very friendly and nice with him. Hill, on the other hand, didn't say even a hello. And there was also the statement against Jean Denis Deletraz: "I hope he abandon the race as soon as possible".

RAW PACE - 8,5
Whenever he had a fast car, he was very fast (he scored a lot of poles in 1995 and 1996). His race pace was usually quite good as well.

STRATEGIC ABILITY - 7
Average, really.

PERSONAL RELIABILITY - 7
If he was running alone and without troubles, he was very reliable, but when something was at stake, he used to make silly errors. Nothing portraits this better than his 1995 season and especially his stupid clashes with Schumacher in Great Britain and Italy, which reaped two wins for Johnny Herbert and a lot of lost points for Williams in the Constructors Championship.

ENTERTAINING VALUE - 5
He wasn't very good at overtaking people, perhaps because of his lack of karting background. And he wasn't the funniest or most charismatic or simpathetic chap out there, unlike his father.

PERSONAL SIMPATHY - 5
For me, it's no-one particularly good or bad.

DAMON HILL

Finally, my favourite driver of all time. :D

Raw Pace - 8.0 - Very quick for Williams, although not up to Prost's or Senna's level. His 1999 efforts in an extremely competitive Jordan let him down somewhat.

Strategic Ability - 7 - What Phoenix said.

Personal Reliability - 7 - Once again, what Phoenix said.

Entertainment Value - 7 - Not the most entertaining driver out there, but not boring by a long shot.

Personal Sympathy - 9.5 - Hungary 97, nuff said.
I like the way Snrub thinks!
