Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race -Monaco

Post by CarlosFerreira »

Spanish IIDOTR results yet to be announced (oops!), and Monaco is already finished. Still, the IIDOTR is a democratically-decided award,

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for Nico Rosberg's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.

Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6. Something like

1st (10 points):
2nd (6 points):

First one!

1st-Robert Kubica: he was really fast and solid throughout the weekend.
2nd-The Force Indias: personally I didn't expect them to finish well in this track.

1) Robert Kubica: While I'm somewhat disappointed at the first-lap overtake by Vettel off the line, he still drove consistently, yet maintained pace and pressure on the leading two through the whole race.

2) Jaime Alguersuari: More enabled through attrition than anything else, but winning the Minor League Premiership for drivers despite a 17th-place start is still fairly impressive.

Sorry Phoenix have to disagree about the Force India's. They only beat the Toro Rossos in what was a high attrition race.

1. Alonso - Didnt do too much at the end of the race but what a drive in the first 15-20 laps to get himself right in the hunt for points.
2. Kubica - Kept up with Vettel when Webber showed just how good that Red Bull can be. I expected the guy to slowly slide backwards over the course of the race.

1) Kovalienen - very good pace, quickest of the new teams by quite some margin, and not too far off Petrov before his retirement
2) The HRTs - by far their best race on pace, Chandhok was matching Di Grassi before the Virgin retired, and almost stayed ahead of Trulli, while Senna did a great tyre management job and was not too shabby on the pace either

1) Di Grassi for the battle with Alonso, and clearly pushing the car to its limits.
2) Kubica for being consistent and fast all weekend.

Honorable mentions go to:
- Chandhok for having 2 brushes with the Grim Reaper (one for Barichello's wheel, the other for Jarno Trulli's stupidity)
- Alonso for coming from 24th to 6th (or 7th).

1. Kubica - no explanation needed
2. Alonso - I expected him to work his way up through the field, but not this far.

I thought the Force Indias struggled on slow tracks, as much as they exceeded on fast ones, though this has been mitigated with the new car. Plus, they didn't need attrition to score. I think the only car that was ahead of them and retired was Button's.

1. Liuzzi - good job getting into Q3 and despite falling behind Sutil brought it home in the points. Good work considering di Resta has practically one foot in the car.
2. Di Grassi - great little dice with Alonso, putting up much more of a fight than his more experienced teammate Glock did.

1. Kubica - Challenged the Red Bulls all weekend in a car that Petrov proved is far from perfect.
2. Alonso - Despite being passed by Schumacher on the last lap (maybe he knew about the rules though), he made great progress through the field.

Mentions to Force India for getting 2 cars in the points, and also to Di Grassi for defending hard against Alonso despite being in a car that is clearly difficult to drive.

1. Robert Kubica - For having the pace of the Red Bulls, great turnaround after being very disappointing in 2009. He should continue to be strong.
2. Lucas Di Grassi - For keeping Alonso behind him and giving Virgin's sponsors some TV airtime.

1. Webber - controversial choice perhaps, but for the first time, he looked to me like a champion. I didn't think he had it in him.
2. Kubica - I think Petrov showed just how good Kubica was.

(1) Kubica Pretty obvious one
(2) Chandhok Drove a good race considering his car is a pile of crap which had a steering wheel lodged under it for half a lap, and was fighting for position until (almost) the end! A stupid mistake by Trulli ruined a perfectly good race.

1) Fernando Alonso - from a pitlane start to P6 at Monaco is mighty impressive

2) Robert Kubica - impressive drive in the race - and a massive surprise in qualifying

Michael Schumacher - for finally looking competitive.

2. Alonso: From a almost automatic ROTR moment in practice to a decent points haul

1. di Grassi. Sorry, did you witness how bad the car was while he was being followed by Alonso?!

2. Kubica. Brilliant drive in qualifying, wish he had don just so very slightly better on Sunday.

I actually agree that it was a big surprise that he dominated everyone as much as he did.

Results are in (before Wizzie kills me, and he has good reasons to, to be honest)

Code: Select all

Nominee   Points
Robert Kubica   192
Fernando Alonso   98
Lucas di Grassi   44
Vitantonio Liuzzi   16
Force India   12
Heikki Kovalainen   10
Michael Schumacher   10
Jaime Alguersuari   6
HRT   6
Karun Chandhok   6

There was only one man in the running, and he single-handedly scored almost as many points as everyone else put together. Let's have it for Bob Kubica, Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race, Monaco 2010!
Stay home, Colin Kolles!
