2017 Australian Grand Prix – Predicament Predictions!

Post by Rob Dylan »

Welcome to the 2017™ Formula™ 1™ Rolex™ Australian™ Grand Prix™ – Predicament Predictions!
Yes, folks, it’s the grand comeback of the predicament predictions, hosted by your favourite garlic enthusiast, Rob Dylan. And for those of you who don’t know how predicament predictions work, well here’s all you need to know:

Before each race weekend we place predictions as to the top ten at the end of the race, alongside the pole sitter, fastest lap holder, who retires first, the Reject of the Race™, the Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race™, the Deadbeat Teammate of the Race, who will be the best of the débutantes, and who will not qualify. You have until the conclusion of the final practice session of the weekend to submit your predictions without penalty (see below).

So for this week I will predict:
1. Valtteri Bottas
2. Kimi Räikönnen
3. Daniel Ricciardo
4. Lewis Hamilton
5. Sebastian Vettel
6. Nico Hülkenberg
7. Sergio Pérez
8. Felipe Massa
9. Lance Stroll
10. Carlos Sainz Jr.

Pole: Daniel Ricciardo
Fastest Lap: Kimi Räikkönen
First retirement: Max Verstappen
Reject of the Race: Max Verstappen
Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race: Valtteri Bottas
Deadbeat Teammate of the Race: Jolyon Palmer
Minor League Premiership (Rookies): Lance Stroll
And if you’re feeling naughty
DNQ: Both McLaren drivers

And to buck up interest, the top three in the predictions championship by the end of the year will each receive a prize from moi*
*prizes as of yet unknown

The points system (I’ll count it as the season goes by, so you don’t need to worry about it, but here it is anyway) for correct predictions is:
- Race winner: 5 points
- Other podium scorers: 3 points each
- Other points scorers: 2 points each
- Right driver, wrong position: 1 point each
- Pole position: 2 points
- Fastest lap: 1 point
- First retirement: 1 point
- Reject of the Race: 3 points
- Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race: 3 points
- Deadbeat Teammate of the Race: 2 points
- Minor League Premiership (as of Australia, the options are Vandoorne, Ocon and Stroll): 2 points
- Non-qualifiers: 1 point each
- Funniest alternative race title: 1 point
And something people always forget: you may announce double points for one race weekend, where your predictions will be worth double. Just say so on your predictions post.

The only penalties are:
- 2 points for every name changed in predictions after the deadline (the conclusion of Free Practice 3 of that weekend). Though exceptions will be made for force majeure incidents like drivers dropping out of a race weekend, etc.
- 10 points for a submission made after the deadline

Any questions for those who don’t understand something? Just ask! :)

2017 "I'd rather drink Fosters than drive that McLaren" Grand Prix

1. Sebastien Vettel
2. Daniel Ricciardo
3. Lewis Hamilton
4. Kimi Raikkonen
5. Max Verstappen
6. Romain Grosjean
7. Nico Hülkenberg
8. Felipe Massa
9. Sergio Pérez
10. Carlos Sainz Jr.

Pole: Kimi Raikkonen
Fastest Lap: Sebastien Vettel
First retirement: Lance Stroll
Reject of the Race: Kimi Raikkonen / Valterri Bottas
Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race: Romain Gosjean
Deadbeat Teammate of the Race: Valterri Bottas
Minor League Premiership (Rookies): Lance Stroll (by default, even though he retires)

DNQ: Stoffel Vandoorne

Might I also suggest bonus points for whomever comes up with the most comedic alternate race title?

I'm assuming that Vandoorne, Stroll and Ocon all count as rookies, as this is their first full season.

Sure, this is a family game after all! I will give one point for the funniest one :D
Aislabie wrote:I'm assuming that Vandoorne, Stroll and Ocon all count as rookies, as this is their first full season.
Yeah, by the rules it's someone who hasn't driven in a full season, and Ocon drove nine races out of 21, so he definitely counts.

Minor League Premiership: Stroll by default (but he finishes around 12th or so)
Deadbeat Teammate: Verstappen
DNQ: Vandoorne (No Time, due to Mclaren focusing on stopping Alonso's Honda from detonating)

(this will of course be all wrong and it will probably be a Merc 1-2, Red Bull 3-4 and Ferrari 5-6 like the 2016 default but one can dream...)

I think I'd rather take the McLaren - at least there is a chance that might become palatable in the future...

1. Vettel
2. Hamilton
3. Räikkönen
4. Bottas
5. Ricciardo
6. Verstappen
7. Pérez
8. Massa
9. Hülkenberg
10. Sainz Jr.

Pole: Hamilton
Fastest Lap: Räikkönen
First retirement: Vandoorne (I wouldn't be half surprised if, like Magnussen a few years ago, we see one of the McLaren's fail to even complete the formation lap, and it feels like it's a 50-50 chance as to which one blows up first).
Reject of the Race: Haas. We are all expecting McLaren to fail so badly that there is pretty much no way that they could fall below expectations, but I wouldn't be surprised if Haas suffer a repeat of their brake issues again given Grosjean's comments in pre-season testing.
Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race: Pérez
Deadbeat Teammate of the Race: Palmer
Minor League Premiership (Rookies): Ocon

DNQ: None - I think that, if McLaren can get the cars to run for long enough, they will be quick enough to beat the 107% time marker (though I'm not expecting much from them).

So the deadline has passed, and Antonio Giovinazzi has replaced Pascal Wehrlein at the last minute for this weekend's race.

Therefore, for the sake of fairness, I am going to count every Pascal Wehrlein prediction in all of your submissions as Antonio Giovinazzi.

Just a thought- surely Wehrlein pulling out after FP2 should count as first retirement of the weekend, surely (I understand if not, just trying to get some points)

Technically he was withdrawn by the team, which is distinct from a retirement.

I'd go simply for a WD, as he was replaced by Giovinazzi

Man alive I still suck at this. At least I can take some comfort in beating the infinitely more intelligent dr-baker at the moment. And thanks Rob.

And I scored twice as much as someone else. Which is a positive for me, I suppose?

I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting to do that well - I think that is probably one of the best scores that I've racked up in a while (kind of wishing that I'd played the double points multiplier now).
