Ultimate F1 Calendar

Post by Aislabie »

Okay, so I've no idea if this is the right place or not, but I'm interested to see what people's ultimate fantasy of a Formula 1 calendar would be. For the purposes of the discussion, there wouldn't be any safety or funding difficulties in getting a circuit on the calendar - whatever you say goes. It's completely up to you - go crazy.

I've decided to make three calendars. One relatively down to earth (couple of safety upgrades and maybe it's possible), one that's more fantasy and consists only of existing circuits and one that consists only of circuits and/or layouts of circuits that are no longer used or no longer exist. The latter two are obviously assuming a world where the risk of death or serious injury is completely eradicated from motorsport. Also, I've decided to do only one circuit per country to make it that little bit more challenging for myself (cue dozens of honourable mentions):

Existing circuits (realistic)
1. Australian Grand Prix - Albert Park
2. Malaysian Grand Prix - Sepang
3. Turkish Grand Prix - Istanbul
4. Spanish Grand Prix - Jerez
5. Monaco Grand Prix - Monaco
6. Canadian Grand Prix - Montreal
7. Austrian Grand Prix - Red Bull Ring
8. French Grand Prix - Paul Ricard
9. British Grand Prix - Brands Hatch
10. Czech Grand Prix - Brno
11. Belgian Grand Prix - Spa-Francorchamps
12. Italian Grand Prix - Monza
13. Singapore Grand Prix - Marina Bay
14. Japanese Grand Prix - Suzuka
15. United States Grand Prix - Long Beach
16. Argentine Grand Prix - Juan y Óscar Galvez no. 15
17. Brazilian Grand Prix - Interlagos

Existing circuits (fantasy)
1. Australian Grand Prix - Bathurst
2. Malaysian Grand Prix - Sepang
3. Turkish Grand Prix - Istanbul
4. Monaco Grand Prix - Monaco
5. Canadian Grand Prix - Mont-Tremblant
6. Austrian Grand Prix - Salzburgring
7. French Grand Prix - Circuit de la Sarthe
8. Manx/British Grand Prix - Snaefell Mountain (depending on how you consider IOM in relation to the UK)
9. British Grand Prix - Dundrod
10. German Grand Prix - Nordschleife
11. Belgian Grand Prix - Spa-Francorchamps
12. Italian Grand Prix - Monza
13. Japanese Grand Prix - Suzuka
14. Macau Grand Prix - Guia
15. United States Grand Prix - Laguna Seca
16. Argentine Grand Prix - Potrero de los Funes
17. Brazilian Grand Prix - Interlagos

Defunct circuits
1. Australian Grand Prix - Longford
2. South African Grand Prix - Kyalami original layout
3. Estonian Grand Prix - Pirita-Kose-Kloostrimetsa
4. Spanish Grand Prix - Montjuic Park
5. Belgian Grand Prix - Spa-Francorchamps 14 km layout
6. Dutch Grand Prix - Zandvoort original layout
7. Austrian Grand Prix - Osterreichring
8. French Grand Prix - Clermont-Ferrand
9. British Grand Prix - Donington Park original layout
10. Irish Grand Prix - Carrigrohane
11. German Grand Prix - Nurburgring Gesamtstrecke
12. Finnish Grand Prix - Elaintarha
13. Swiss Grand Prix - Bremgarten
14. Italian Grand Prix - Madonie
15. Czech Grand Prix - Brno original road circuit
16. Portuguese Grand Prix - Monsanto Park
17. Singapore Grand Prix - Thomson Road
18. Japanese Grand Prix - Fuji Speedway original layout
19. Mexican Grand Prix - Mexico City original layout
20. Brazilian Grand Prix - Gávea

I feel uneasy from typing that last calendar...

I'll do a realistic one that could quite easily be done for 2017 if the FIA/FOM desired. Ticks all the big markets that F1 needs to be in, keeps its European core, plus grabs the (necessary) cash from the Arabs. It also attempts to organise the races roughly by region, starting and finishing in the Far East.

21 races is a bit of a stretch. I would have liked to have included a South African GP too as I really think F1 needs to be in Africa. You could probably ditch the Turkey/Austria slot, Hungary too, and maybe even Spain if attendances hit the skids. Russia could be shaky depending on the political scene so you could get down to a more manageable figure without loosing important rounds, either from a financial or historical perspective.

Naturally there's no room for Baku! :pantano:

1. Australian GP - Albert Park
2. Malaysian GP - Sepang Int.
3. Indian GP - Buddh Int.
4. Abu Dhabi GP - Yas Marina
5. Russian GP - Sochi Autodrom
6. Turkish GP - Istanbul Park OR Austrian GP - Red Bull Ring
7. Spanish GP - Catalunya
8. Monaco GP - Monte Carlo
9. French GP - Magny Cours
10. British GP - Silverstone
11. German GP - Hockenheim
12. Hungarian GP - Hungaroring
13. Belgian GP - Spa-Francorchamps
14. Italian GP - Monza
15. Canadian GP - Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
16. United States GP - Circuit of the Americas
17. Mexican GP - Hermanos Rodriguez
18, Brazilian GP - Interlagos
19. Singapore GP - Marina Bay
20. Chinese GP - Shanghai Int.
21. Japanese GP - Suzuka

This is my personal list of tracks I'd like to see in a fully fledged F1 calendar. Some of the tracks are not very realistic, I know.

2. Malaysian GP - Sepang
3. Bahrain GP - Bahrain
4. Monaco GP - Monaco
5. Canadian GP - Montreal
6. US GP - Long Beach
7. Mexican GP - Hermanos Rodriguez
8. French GP - Circuit de la Sarthe (fantasy) // Paul Ricard (realistic)
9. British GP - Silverstone
10. German GP - Hockenheim late 90's (sigh)
11. Austrian GP - Red Bull Ring
12. Belgian GP - Spa
13. Italian GP - Monza
14. Singapore GP - Marina Bay
15. Macau GP - Macau
16. Chinese GP - Shanghai

As I asked the question, I think it's only fair that I answer it myself too. I cut it down to sixteen races, and kind of like it even if travel would be a bit of a pain (those first five Grands Prix - many Airmiles)

Vaguely realistic calendar:
  1. 20th March - Australian Grand Prix - Albert Park
  2. 3rd April - South African Grand Prix - Kyalami
  3. 17th April - Argentine Grand Prix - Circuit No 9 (shoot me down, but I actually quite like it)
  4. 1st May - Bahrain Grand Prix - Sakhir International Circuit (a poor circuit made to work by DRS)
  5. 15th May - Spanish Grand Prix - Motorland Aragon
  6. 29th May - Monaco Grand Prix - Circuit de Monaco
  7. 12th June - British Grand Prix - Silverstone Circuit
  8. 26th June - Canadian Grand Prix - Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
  9. 10th July - New York Grand Prix - Watkins Glen
  10. 14th August - German Grand Prix - Nurburgring GP (I was tempted to say Hockenheim Short)
  11. 28th August - Belgian Grand Prix - Spa-Francorchamps
  12. 11th September - Italian Grand Prix - Autodromo Nazionale Monza
  13. 1st October - Singapore Grand Prix - Marina Bay Street Circuit
  14. 15th October - Japanese Grand Prix - Suzuka Circuit
  15. 29th October - United States Grand Prix - Circuit of the Americas
  16. 13th November - Brazilian Grand Prix - Interlagos

Also came up with this completely unrealistic one:
If safety and dirty air were of no concern
  1. Australian Grand Prix - Mount Panorama Circuit
  2. Singapore Grand Prix - Marina Bay Circuit
  3. Japanese Grand Prix - Suzuka Circuit
  4. Macau Grand Prix - Guia Circuit
  5. Monaco Grand Prix - Circuit de Monaco
  6. French Grand Prix - Circuit de la Sarthe
  7. British Grand Prix - Brands Hatch
  8. Finnish Grand Prix - Ahvenisto Circuit
  9. German Grand Prix - Nurburgring (full 16-mile behemoth)
  10. Belgian Grand Prix - Spa-Francorchamps
  11. Italian Grand Prix - Autodromo Nazionale Monza
  12. Canadian Grand Prix - Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
  13. United States Grand Prix - Circuit of the Americas (it's only ever given us good races)#
  14. Mexican Grand Prix - Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez (Pista 2 with Peratalda)
  15. Argentine Grand Prix - Potrero de los Funes
  16. Brazilian Grand Prix - Interlagos

Rounds 1-15: Spa-Francorchamps
Round 16: a shameless Chinese exact copy of Spa-Francorchamps.

Do we really need other circuits? The track is varied enough, and weather conditions are unpredictable. Also it's big enough to host a lot more cars than most circuits do.
I don't know what i want and i want it now!

I decided to have a go, but with a few restrictions of sorts imposed on myself. I have made 2 calendars, one for temporary circuits, and another for permanent courses. Both are 16 races long, and only 1 circuit per country. I also plan to keep the calendars as realistic as possible. I have also included 4 extra non-championship races in no specific order.

Permanent:

1. Australian GP (Phillip Island/Eastern Creek)
2. Malaysian GP (Sepang)
3. Japanese GP (Motegi/Suzuka)
4. Chinese GP (Shanghai)
5. Arabian GP (Yas Marina/Bahrain)
6. German GP (Nurburgring/Eurospeedway Lausitz)
7. Dutch GP (Zandvoort) / Canadian GP (Mont-Tremblant)*
8. Belgian GP (Spa-Francorchamps)
9. British GP (Silverstone/Donington Park)
10. French GP (Paul Ricard/Bugatti Circuit)
11. Italian GP (Monza/Imola)
12. Spanish GP (Valencia/Aragon)
13. United States GP (COTA/Watkins Glen)
14. Mexican GP (Mexico City)
15. Brazilian GP (Interlagos)
16. Argentinean GP (Buenos Aires No. 15/Termas de Rio Hondo) / African GP (Kyalami/Phakisa)

NC1: Hungarian GP (Hungaroring)
NC2: Sweden (Anderstorp/Mantorp Park)

I just realised I forgot about Sepang. I'd replace it with the Pacific Grand Prix if Autopolis turned out to be shite.

Re: Ultimate F1 Calendar

I've just had another thought, which is including a whole boat-load more Formula One venues, but rotating them so that the calendar isn't stupidly long. Please consider that this isn't a calendar I'm putting together from a racing perspective, I'm just trying to get as many circuits as possible.

1) Australian Grand Prix (Rotates between: Adelaide, Melbourne & Surfers Paradise)
2) Argentine / South African Grand Prix (Rotates between: Buenos Aires, Kyalami & Rio Hondo)
3) Bahrain / Emirates Grand Prix (Rotates between: Dubai, Sakhir & Yas Marina)
4) Moroccan / Portuguese Grand Prix (Rotates between: Algarve, Estoril & Marrakesh)
5) Spanish Grand Prix (Rotates between: Aragon, Catalunya & Ricardo Tormo)
6) Monaco Grand Prix (Doesn't rotate because people would freak out too much)
7) British Grand Prix (Rotates between: Brands Hatch, Donington & Silverstone)
8) Canadian / New York Grand Prix (Rotates between: Montreal, Toronto & Watkins Glen)
9) French Grand Prix (Rotates between: Le Mans Bugatti, Magny Cours & Paul Ricard)
10) German Grand Prix (Rotates between: Hockenheim, Nurburgring & Oschersleben)
11) Belgian / Dutch Grand Prix (Rotates between: Spa, Zandvoort & Zolder)
12) Russian / Swedish Grand Prix (Rotates between: Anderstorp, Moscow & Sochi)
13) Austrian / Hungarian / Slovakian Grand Prix (Rotates between; Brno, Hungaroring & Red Bull Ring)
14) Italian Grand Prix (Rotates between: Imola, Monza & Mugello)
15) Azerbaijan / Qatar / Turkish Grand Prix (Rotates between: Baku, Istanbul Park & Losail)
16) Chinese / India Grand Prix (Rotates between: Buddh, Shanghai & Zhuhai)
17) Japanese / Korean Grand Prix (Rotates between: Fuji, Suzuka & Yeongnam)
18) Malaysian / Singapore / Thai Grand Prix (Rotates between Buriram, Marina Bay & Sepang)
19) United States Grand Prix (Rotates between: Barber Park, COTA & Long Beach)
20) Brazilian / Mexican Grand Prix (Rotates between: AHR, Brasilia & Interlagos)

Of course, not suggesting that this is even slightly a good idea, just had some fun putting it together is all.

I'll consider all circuits and specify layouts by a single year:

1. Australian GP - Adelaide (1995)
2. Malaysian GP - Sepang (Current)
3. Monaco GP - Monaco (1997)
4. Austrian GP - Österreichring (1987)
5. Swiss GP - Bremgarten (1952)
6. German GP East - Hockenheimring (1999)
7. German GP West A - Nurburgring Nordschleife (1975)
8. German GP West B - Nurburgring GP-Strecke (1999)
9. Belgian GP - Spa (1971)
10. Dutch GP - Zandvoort (1985)
11. Italian GP - Imola (1990)
12. Canadian GP - Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (Current)
13. USA GP West - Laguna Seca (Current)
14. USA GP East - Indianapolis Oval circuit (Current)
15. Brazilian GP - Interlagos (2002)
16. South African GP - Kyalami (1992)

Rotation between Imola/Monza, Malaysia and Singapore and South Africa and Suzuka (which I don't particularly like) seems okay too. I really think 16 races a year is enough.

Re: Ultimate F1 Calendar

I know it's a thread-bump of epic proportions, but with all the new ownership of F1, and the demise of the Malaysian GP, I started coming up with a calendar comprising only of circuits not currently on the F1 calendar:

  1. Image United States Grand Prix (58 laps) - Watkins Glen
  2. Image Canadian Grand Prix (100 laps) - Exhibition Place
  3. Image Portuguese Grand Prix (69 laps) - Autodromo do Algarve
  4. Image Spanish Grand Prix (60 laps) - Motorland Aragon
  5. Image Moroccan Grand Prix (100 laps) - Circuit Moulay el Hassan
  6. Image British Grand Prix (200 laps) - Rockingham Speedway
  7. Image French Grand Prix (77 laps) - Bugatti Circuit
  8. Image German Grand Prix (63 laps) - Nurburgring GP-Strecke
  9. Image Dutch Grand Prix (75 laps) - Circuit Park Zandvoort
  10. Image Finnish Grand Prix (100 laps) - Kemora Moottorirata
  11. Image Russian Grand Prix (82 laps) - Moscow Raceway
  12. Image Turkish Grand Prix (60 laps) - Istanbul Park
  13. Image Czech Grand Prix (60 laps) - Automotodrom Brno
  14. Image Italian Grand Prix (66 laps) - Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari
  15. Image Chinese Grand Prix (95 laps) - Chengdu Goldenport Circuit
  16. Image Japanese Grand Prix (71 laps) - Fuji Speedway
  17. Image Thai Grand Prix (70 laps) - Chang International Circuit
  18. Image Australian Grand Prix (82 laps) - Sydney Motorsport Park
  19. Image South African Grand Prix (70 laps) - Kyalami
  20. Image Argentine Grand Prix (67 laps) - Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo

I've tried to create a bit more of a varied calendar, so there are some very technical circuits, some power circuits, and even an oval circuit tucked in there.
