McLaren disputes this assertation - Arrows was never really a threat to us. As was evidenced by their decision to wimp out and effectively concede the championship at about the halfway point when they still had plenty of money left.

We need the money so that we are competitive in 1980. Additionally we are the only team to beat Mclaren for the constructor championship since 1976...

... so what's to say you won't abandon this year in favour of 1982 then?

Also, you beating McLaren would be very relevant if this was 1979. Unfortunately for you, this is now 1981.

The choice is clear: Go with the proven champions, or go with a team that managed to beat them exactly once and never again.

Before we post sponsor requests, we at Renault ant to know how much manufacturer sponsorship will be this year, if it's worth anything at all, as well as ho many sponsors we are allowed to have this year.

Deadline for posting your sponsorship plans is Tuesday, 18 PM CET. I don't want to set Sunday as a deadline, but it would be nice if you would manage to post your plans by then, as I could run the RNG a bit earlier.

With the help of Herr V8Fan, the 1981 wiki page is now online. Team numbers will remain the same as last year except for the following changes:

1. With the merger of ATS and Wolf, ATS will keep number set 34/35, leaving Wolf's old number set, 20/21, available
2. The closure of the Penske team has also left 22/23 available for 1981. By default, the two news teams have received 20/21 (Theodore) and 22/23 (Toleman) for this season
3. Kauhsen going bankrupt at the end of last year has also left 30/31 available. By default, these numbers were allocated to Osella, which means 44/45 is no longer available unless Osella prefers to keep their old numbers.

Of course, there's nothing stopping teams swapping number sets as long as both team owners have no problem with it.

As I have done tier 1 and 2 sponsor signing now, the budgets are updated in the first post. You can now start building chassis and engines, make offers to drivers, buy tyres and negotiate engine contracts. However, I won't set a deadline until I have done tier 3 sponsor signing, so if you prefer to wait for that, you can do so.

Anyway, you will have enough time to sort all these things out, I will focus on ACO LMC meanwhile.

I have one question regarding engines: will upgrading the engine effect the building costs? and how much are the upgrading costs for engines?

Osella will offer Riccardo Patrese a 1 year renewal @ 400K.
Our second choice is Nelson Piquet for 1 year at 300K.
Our third choice is Ronnie Peterson for 1 year at 400K.
Our fourth choice is Michele Alboreto for 1 year at 200K, with Ferrari paying 50% of this salary.
Our fifth choice is Emerson Fittipaldi for 1 year at 200K.

McLaren would like to draw teams to the talents of Kevin Cogan, who scored a podium on his debut substituting for the injured Patrick Tambay at Shadow. He is a fantastic talent and would surely be a great addition to any team.

Theodore will try and squeeze as much money out of the following drivers:

Arie Luyendyk
Eddie Cheever
Brian Henton
Marc Surer

We're also looking for an engine deal. I'm not gonna have my pants pulled down, so if it ain't reasonable then we don't have a deal.

Leaving Toleman for a moment to focus on Hart's plans, if I may.

We would like to build a Tier 4 turbocharged engine focused on reliability - that will drain our funds to naught but Toleman will be buying the engines at cost ($400k), plus a $25k further investment into reliability. Any other teams will be able buy in for $450k, plus if willing to pay the upgrade costs will be able to invest in an upgrade of their choosing. Pays to get in quick while upgrades are cheap, but when they are more expensive Hart will consider subsidising any upgrades on a case by case basis.

Newcomers Hart are looking to supply teams with a turbocharged Tier 4 engine for $450k. The engine will boast considerable reliability. As above for an additional $50k Theodore may elect an upgrade of their choosing, and Hart will invest in that.

Well Alfa Romeo are facing dire straights financially with no sponsors so far thus are we able to do what we did last season and take sponsorship money from the manufacturer.

Tyrrell is looking for a long-term engine deal that can push us to anything else than lower positions at the grid/race.

Meanwhile, we are going to develop soon our car plans

Elf Shadow Racing Team is now issuing a request for tenders regarding engine supply. Though other suppliers are welcome to submit bids, we are specifically predisposed towards Ferrari and Matra and would like to invite those parties to the negotiating table at this time.

Renault will still provide the most well-rounded engine of the field, and seeing how well Arrows did with the engines last year, we hope that Tyrrell and Theodore, and any other team wanting a balance platform will take our engines into consideration when searching for a powerplant to use.

Rebaque are accepting tenders for engines, however although we wish Hart all the best, we don't think that their engine will be competitive in the first year.

Ligier will make the following offers to the following drivers for the 1981 season:

1. Didier Pironi - 550k, 3 years
2. Jacques Laffite - 550k, 3 years
3. Alan Jones - 550k, 2 years
4. Henri Toivonen - 150k, 2 years
5. Teo Fabi - 150k, 2 years
6. Andrea de Cesaris - 150k, 1 year

In addition to these base payments, all our contracts will come with the following performance payments over the duration of their contracts:

Championship win: 100k
Top 3 in the chanpionship: 75k
Top 5 in the championship: 50k
Top 10 in the championship: 25k
Each point scored: 1k
Each pole position: 1k
Each fastest lap: 1k

EDIT: There really should be RNGs for whether Renault and Alfa will keep their works teams, because there's only so much that their respective HQs would tolerate the teams being run by incompetent fools :P
