RIP GP Vanuatu - Long Live GP Palau

Post by CasinoSquare »

Sad to hear that the GP Van is no more, however i question your choice of Tonga and instead put forward a proposal for GP Palau. Japanese is one of thier recognised regional languages so Kamui will have another home race.

They accepting of allcomers (Piquet Jnr?) even allowing Guantanamo prisoners to move there (on the basis they get paid $200m by the US) so their ability to "do a deal" must appeal to Auntie Bernie and show the BRDC the way.

On the basis they only have 22 miles of paved roads, a GP track will directly increase their roading network by 10% - part of the FIAs wider social responsibility agenda surely. Plus my friend Pelanato's wife is of Palau descent and would happily be the Race Steward.

They also fish using dynamite which means that Pit hospitality will include a field hospital, useful for USF1 when bits inevitably fall off their homemade go-kart.

So who's sending the proposal to Todt then?

I differ. An Iceland GP would be more interesting, with the roads full of ice sheets...

I'll start, everyone writes a sentence.

"Dear Napoleon Bonaparte,

I come to thee with a proposal that shall serve you well in approaching Bernie."

There did used to be a circuit at Colmar-Berg in Luxembourg - I think the most high-profile series to appear there was the Formula Opel Euroseries, and from what I remember from a small bit of TV footage the place looked decidedly overgrown.

I think it would be funny to have a GP at Palau, because you can pronounce it with a Portuguese accent as "Palão", which sounds funny.

Also, I don't understand? What happened to the Vanuatu Grand Prix? I wanted them to host it using the circuit I drew around the volcano on Tanna :(

They found a mass grave of headless corpses IIRC so it will probably become a conservation site...

I wasn't following the circuit design thread  so I didn't notice your track at the time. But having been to Mount Yasur on Tanna (and having stood on the crater, fulfilling a boyhood dream to stand on the crater of an active volcano whilst explosions take place, but that's another story!), I fear there might be one slight problem with the design: anything to the north and north-west of the volcano would be covered in ash thanks to the prevailing winds. Having said that, we campaign for rain, snow, ice, sleet, pig fat, vaseline and any other foreign substance to be placed on tracks to make the racing more interesting, so why not ash and falling rocks at great velocity?

I think it's time for someone to bump up the circuit design thread with a design for Koror, Palau. :D

Good idea, interestingly they have a gym, elementary school and prison all in a 400m2 block in the centre of town. I suggest a pit complex of magnificant proportions - leisure facilities for drivers, team offices and somewhere for Max to stay when he visits.

I couldn't find the track design thread, so I'll post it here:

I did my best to draw a street circuits in Koror.

the japanese monument outside the penultimate corner. Driver should be careful not to hit it.
(It reads: "The great Kamui Kobayashi will crash here on lap 22")

I couldn't find the track design thread either, but it's relevant now anyway so I'll just post it here.

I didn't want yet another street circuit, but some of the public roads around Koror have some cool corners. However, the problem with this location is that you have very little space to design a track because the islands are so small.

Image

Half of this circuit uses the public road that is already there. I only drew the yellow line, which also uses parts of existing roads that you can't see on this scale, but you can look it up for yourself, they are there. The orange and red lines are alternate layouts, one to make the circuit shorter, one to make it longer and faster, removing the nasty hairpin. This latter one might be a bit hard physically though, since it goes right up to the coastline and uses part of a road that comes straight off a bridge.
What's more, I didn't notice until after drawing the circuit that the straight on the right hand side, the way I've drawn it, probably passes over a mountain chain. This is easy to fix, you only need to move the straight a bit to the left.
Also, the track passes through several villages/built on areas, so they would have to be demolished, presumably rendering a number of people homeless.

Despite all the practical faults, I think this track is actually pretty good. I wasn't as witty as Luca though in coming up with names for the corners. XD

Not bad, Waris. How long is the track?

I wasn't able to measure it exactly, but Gmaps Pedometer says it's about 15 kilometers, which I think is an illegal length these days for F1, but it's about the same length as the old Spa-Francorchamps, so it could be epic for endurance races. :3

Edit: I suppose if you cut a part of the track by making a corner from the mountain straight (too bad, I liked that =[) back onto where it comes down (don't know if that would be possible, since there seem to be houses in the way; also can't be bothered to draw it now) you would get a legal or almost-legal track length.

Another edit: o lol http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3455270
