Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - France 2022

1. Jimmie Johnson. For 2/3s of that race I thought Jimmie was a legit threat to win. At the age of 47, while participating in this series for fun.

2. Josef Newgarden. Utterly destroyed everyone at Iowa last night, the sort of ruthless aggression that'll secure his third championship.

Nothing at Paul Ricard was IIDOTR worthy.

Lewis Hamilton: Well ahead of George all weekend long, beat Perez on pace and took advantage of Ferrari's usual shenanigans to score his best result of the year

1. Sainz - Ferrari don't deserve him.
2. Norris - Solid performance yet again, pushing McLaren where it should be.

Think this could be another one for no award of IIDOTR.

2nd & 3rd is exactly where Merc should be with Ferrari pulling a Ferrari and Perez having an off day. Nothing Infinite (even allowing for hyperbole) there, imo.

Likewise in the era of F1, F1.1 (Merc) and F1.5 (Rest of the grid), and an SC thrown in, Sainz carving a way through to the point where he should've got 3rd, before he was Ferrari'd is not Infinite either.

So who gets it?

It's either no one, or default to best of the rest which is Alonso.

I agree with Enforcer. I don’t think anyone did anything worthy of this award today. The closest I could think of is Stroll getting a point for 10th because we don’t expect him to be there these days.

47 year old Jimmie Johnson in Indycar though….

Actually tbf Stroll isn't a bad call given Aston Martin's levels of desolation at times this season.

Mercedes: The best team performance today. Surprisingly competitive especially after the practice sessions and qualifying – when Hamilton got ahead of Pérez, I expected him to lose the position soon, but he never did and Russell got past too.

I agree there are slimmer pickings, but Stroll is probably one of the better candidates as you wouldn't have expected him to get up into the points given where the team were on Saturday.

I guess that Mercedes could be said to be somewhat of a surprise, in as much as most would have expected Perez to cruise past pretty comfortably, particularly as Red Bull had a fairly healthy straight line speed advantage. Instead, we saw Hamilton able to hold Perez off at arms length, and then Russell's opportunistic pass means that he is now only one point behind Sainz in the WDC, with Hamilton having also made a noticeable amount of ground recently too.

Lewis Hamilton: He may not have won but to achieve his and Mercedes' best result since Abu Dhabi last year is far from a bad way to mark his 300th race!

There's no way I would have thought after qualifying that Merc would get a double podium so I'm saying them. I thought they might even struggle to beat McLaren/Alpine!

Sainz: Ferrari tried desperately to ruin his race, and he soldiered on. Class.

The voting for IIDOTR is now open, you have 48 hours to do your worst. I imagine this should be a heated affair. :deletraz:
