Alt-WRC '97

Post by CarloSpace »

Welcome all to the first ever (I think?) Alt-WRC season here on GP Rejects! This one will be simulated using my purpose-built excel sheet that can handle various surfaces, road conditions and all that jazz.

Championship rules overview
The 1997 season will have championships for two different car categories: WRC for WRC cars and 2-Litre World Cup for Group A Kit Cars.
WRC awards World Championships for both drivers and manufacturers. 2-Litre World Cup is only for the manufacturers with no drivers' title awarded.

Points are awarded for the top-10 finishers on the following system: 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1.

WRC teams are required to enter a minimum of two cars for each round of the championship. Teams are free to enter as many cars as they like but can only nominate a maximum of three (3) cars eligible to score manufacturers' championship points. Only the two best placed cars' points will count towards the championship.

2-Litre teams are required to enter a car for a minimum of 10 races of the championship. Teams are free to enter as many cars as they like but can only nominate a maximum of two (2) cars eligible to score manufacturers' championship points.

Manufacturers

WRC

Subaru (kinnikuniverse)
Ford (Miguel98)
Mitsubishi (Klon)
Toyota (Pinkd56)

2-Litre

Škoda (TCBY)
Peugeot (Butterfox)
SEAT (DigitDan7)
Volkswagen (Hermann95)
Ford (Frogfoot9013)
Nissan (girry)
Citroën (Dexter249)
Hyundai (Dom)

Renault
GM Europe
Suzuki

Suzuki are based in Asia & Oceania. All the other manufacturers are based in Europe.

Gameplay
Managers are expected to handle driver signings, rally entries, car development and selling cars to privateer customers.

All the relevant information regarding teams, budgets and available drivers can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

Driver signing and rally entries
Driver signings and rally entries are done primarily at the start of the season but managers will be able to enter rallies and/or sign drivers at any point during the season.

Drivers can be signed for full-time or part-time contracts. Full-time drivers will be paid a yearly salary regardless of the number of races they are entered. Part-time drivers will be paid on a race-by-race basis only for the rounds they are entered. Part-time drivers have no further obligations towards the team and may drive for any number of manufacturers during the season. Preventing a driver from entering rallies with another manufacturer requires a full-time contract. Maximum full-time contract length is 3 years.

WRC teams are guaranteed and required to enter two cars to each round of the championship, free of charge.
Entering an extra car costs 150.000 credits per rally plus a further 35.000 if the rally is on another continent than the team's base.
Part-time drivers can be asked to contribute for the entry costs while offering a contract.

2-Litre teams are required to enter at least one car for a minimum of 10 rounds of the championship. 2-Litre teams have no free entries.
Entering a Kit car costs 50.000 credits per rally plus a further 10.000 if the rally is on another continent than the team's base.
Additional entries on the same rally cost 25.000 credits per car plus a further 5.000 if on another continent.
Part-time drivers can NOT be asked to contribute for the entry costs in the 2-Litre cup.

Driver contracts are possible to terminate by paying a driver double their outstanding salary.

Car development
Car upgrades are done by development tokens. Teams earn tokens every rally based on the results of previous year's constructors' championship standings according to the table below. 2-Litre Cup manufacturers earn a fixed amount of 3 tokens per race.

Code: Select all

Pos.	Tokens/race	Tokens/year
1st	3 42
2nd	3 42
--
3rd	4 56
4th	4 56
--
5th	5 70
6th	5 70
--
7th	6 84
8th	6 84

--
KitCar	3 (fixed)	42
Upgrades
Available upgrades are Power, Handling, Reliability and Setup re-assign. First three upgrades are self-explanatory, increasing the car's performance values. Setup re-assign gives managers the option to re-assign the car's setup points (performance split between tarmac and loose surfaces) by one point in either direction once per season. Points can't be offset by more than 3 points in either direction. See the datasheet for further information.

Upgrades and their costs for WRC teams are:
Power = 15 tokens & 2.000.000 cr
Handling = 15 tokens & 2.000.000 cr
Setup points re-assign = 7 tokens & 800.000 cr (available once per season)
Reliability = 9 tokens & 1.200.000 cr
New car = 80 tokens & 10.000.000 cr. Teams may spend as much extra money as they wish for a chance to gain more performance.

Upgrades and their costs for 2-Litre teams are:
Power = 15 tokens & 500.000 cr
Handling = 15 tokens & 500.000 cr
Setup points re-assign = 7 tokens & 200.000 cr (available once per season)
Reliability = 9 tokens & 300.000 cr
New car = 80 tokens & 3.000.000 cr. Teams may spend as much extra money as they wish for a chance to gain more performance.

New car design
Designing a new car chassis requires 80 tokens and money according to the tables above. Teams' current chassis must have been upgraded at least three times before teams are able to design a new car chassis. (not applied for 2L teams who are racing pre-97 cars)
Suggested interval for designing new chassis is once every three years for maximum efficiency.

If teams are short of development tokens, they may buy extra tokens towards building a new car at a price of 150.000 credits/token.

When introducing a new car, managers are expected to assign setup points (split between gravel and tarmac performance) and nominate a price for customer cars (see Car market).

Car market
Teams are able to set the price and sell their WRC and Kit cars to privateer customers.
There is a global demand of around 50 WRC and 75 Kit cars per year. A single manufacturer may sell a maximum of 16 cars per year.
Car market RNG is run quarter-yearly in-game time. Performance in the WRC and asking price affect the RNG probability.

WRC cars have a base value of 300.000 credits.
2-Litre cars have a base value of 60.000 credits.

Selling the cars for profit requires setting the asking price higher than these values.

Prize money and budgeting
Manufacturers' championship prize money table:

Code: Select all

 Pos. WRC 2-Litre
 1st	10.000.000	3.000.000
 2nd 9.500.000	2.750.000
 3rd 9.000.000	2.500.000
 4th 8.500.000	2.400.000
 5th 8.000.000	2.300.000
 6th 7.500.000	2.200.000
 7th 7.000.000	2.100.000
 8th 6.500.000	2.000.000
 9th 6.000.000	1.900.000
10th 5.500.000	1.800.000
11th 5.000.000	1.700.000
12th 4.500.000	1.600.000
In WRC manufacturer backing, sponsorship and other deals will provide an annual income of 5.000.000 € to the teams (paid at the start of the season).
In 2-Litre Cup manufacturer backing, sponsorship and other deals will provide an annual income of 500.000 € to the teams (paid at the start of the season).
Manufacturer backing might be reduced if a team has accumulated lots of surplus funds.

Not possible at this time, sorry. It's something for the future but for this "proof of concept" run I prefer to keep things relatively simple for my admin.

As a side note, should have known you clowns flock the 2-Litre cup instead of the proper World Championship :pantano:

Next we'll begin the driver bidding and rally entry process.

Late 90's was rather crazy in terms of driver rotation and all so there are basically no limits on how many drivers and for which rallies you may enter them.

All the relevant info regarding your teams, driver requirements (some 2-litre teams) and notable available drivers are found in this sheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

The drivers' expected salary is the salary they expect from a full-time season. Some of them might be open to taking a pay cut from 2-Litre World Cup teams if no WRC seat is available. You are of course allowed to go as much over or under their expected salary as you like in your bids.

Part-time salaries are done on a per race basis so please indicate the per race compensation and the specific rallies you are offering for part-time drivers.

More info about rally calendar, contracts and rally entries is found on the first post of this thread. Remember that WRC teams are expected to field two cars for each round of the championsip. Any extra car comes with a cost of 150.000 cr/rally. 2-Litre Cup teams are expected to field at least 1 car for a minimum 10 rounds of the championship with every rally costing at least 50.000 cr/car.

ONE NOTE FOR ALL regarding driver bidding:
I forgot to mention that offered full-time contracts can be 1-3 years long. By default I will consider the offers to be 1 year only.

After the initial driver bidding before season you will be able to sign drivers all through the season.

I'm happy with everyone's bids so far. Remaining teams (VW and Ford's 2L team) have until tomorrow 21:00 EEST to post their bids.

Also, sorry about the confusion but I have removed Saxo from Citroën's development plans since it's a 1.6 Kit Car for group A6 and thus will not be an upgrade over Citroën's ZX. Sorry for any confusion Dexter!

DRIVER RNG'S HAVE BEEN RUN
The RNG process can be found on Discord's #rejectsport-market channel for the curious. I will not be pasting it all here but you can find the end results here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... =321095497

Budgets and everything has been updated accordingly.
Managers are responsible to check for any errors in the rally entries and budgets. There are simply so many things to keep track of that mistakes are bound to happen so please check before each rally that your team's entries look fine.

=== === ===

WHAT'S NEXT?

Driver market is open again so you can bid for drivers for your missing seats, extra cars or whatever. This is an ongoing process and driver RNG's will be run just before each rally (if there are any bids in between rallies).

Car development can be done at any point during the season. Please refer to the first post of this thread for more information and costs of different upgrades. Your development token tally can be found on the sheet. Please note that if you already have a car in development, it is not advised to buy any upgrades to your existing cars (Toyota, Škoda, Nissan).
Other teams may build new cars by accumulating enough money and development tokens (car will be ready immediately).

Car market is approaching. Manufacturers will be able to sell cars to privateers four quarter-yearly, with the first market period coming up after Safari Rally.

Please post the asking price of your car if you wish to sell cars to privateers.
WRC cars have a base value of 300.000 credits.
2-Litre cars have a base value of 60.000 credits.
Any asking price below these numbers will incur losses for the team.

Failure to post asking price before first car market will result with in no cars sold.

Please nominate your points scoring drivers for each rally if you have more than three (WRC) or two (2L) drivers entered.
WRC teams can nominate three drivers while 2-Litre teams may nominate two drivers to collect manufacturers' championship points in each rally.

Failure to nominate drivers will result in the top-2 drivers of this sheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... =321095497) to be nominated by default.

=== === ===

Deadline for Rallye Monte Carlo entries is Friday 20:00 EEST. You can follow Rallye Monte Carlo live on Discord on Friday evening.

You can not offer multi-year or even a season long deal on a per race part-time basis. You have to offer the drivers full-time deals with full-time salary for the year (or years) if you want to ensure retaining them after their one-off appearances. I assume you are intending to offer them part-time offers for the specific rallies so in that case you don't have to indicate the length of the contract because it's automatically just for those rallies.

Full-time offers mean the driver won't be able to driver for other marks without your permission while part-time offers mean they are free to do other rallies.

Multi-year contracts however require yearly salary any case.

Also, de Mevius and Bernardini are not happy that you are cutting their schedule just a day after they signed with your team.

Bernardini
1-75 Doesn't care since he never was keen to race on heavy gravel anyway
76-100 Demands to be entered for the agreed rounds
63! Bernardini accepts the schedule cuts.

de Mevius
1-50 Is okay with the new schedule
51-80 Demands at least Acropolis
81-100 Demands full agreed schedule
82! de Mevius is fuming and demands entries for the agreed upon rounds.

As per Discord discussion, de Mevius is offered a third car in the tarmac rounds which he is happy to accept.

Like I said yesterday on Discord, this was the pre-season driver bidding. From now they will be done just before each rally so easy there.

Thanks for nominating the drivers but it is only necessary if you have more than three drivers entered for a rally :)

As per feedback, here's the edited offers
Monte Carlo bids:
Jean Chatriot 10k, one race contract. Being a former Andros winner, we think his experience on ice would serve us well in Monte Carlo.
Simon Jean-Joseph 50k per year on a 3 year contract to be our junior driver, entering him in rallys left, right and centre where there's budget. Will also be Peugeot's official reserve and test driver. We hope the tourist office from Martinique will help us out in convincing him.
Benoît Rousselot 1k, one race contract
Nicholas Latil 1k, one race contract
Fréderic Dor 1k, one race contract

corsica bids
Simon Jean-Joseph - same conditions as monte carlo obviously
Benoît Rousselot 1k, one race contract
Nicholas Latil 1k, one race contract
Fréderic Dor 1k, one race contract

If there is budget, Lopes may also enter his home rally in Portugal but that is TBA
I don't know what i want and i want it now!

McRae leads Subaru 1-2 in Monte Carlo

Colin McRae wins the 1997 Rallye Monte Carlo after overcoming early mechanical issues which saw him drop down to 14th after SS4. The Subaru driver put up a monster comeback drive to force rally leading Carlos Sainz into a driving error on stage 15 of 18. The Spaniard crashed his Escort WRC against a guardrail and was forced to retire. Richard Burns is second completed the Subaru 1-2.

In the 2-Litre World Cup Citroën's Gilles Panizzi was the early pace-setter as he was as high as 3rd overall after six stages with over one and a half minute on hand over second in class Jesús Puras. Mechanical issues on stage 7 and furthermore on stage 11 dropped the Frenchman back but he was able to climb to third in class. Peugeot's one-off specialist François Chatriot inherited the lead after stage 11 but mechanical issues costing him almost seven minutes on stage 16 dropped him down the order. Thus, it was Nissan's Harri Rovanperä who came out on top in the 2-Litre World Cup class to take a narrow victory over Peugeot's Adruzilo Lopes.

=== === ===

Reminders of things expected of the managers:

Please post the price of your cars if you wish to sell cars to privateers.

Rally Sweden will hopefully be run next week.
