Alt-Mario Kart 1995: The Great Power Era

Post by Rob Dylan »

Welcome back to yet another glorious year of Alt-Mario Kart. Last year was tempestuous to say the least: one driver basically died, rules and drivers were changed mid-season. Some changes were popular, some otherwise, and some wondered whether Mario Kart itself was going to be able to survive under the strain. However, under the guiding hand of the MIA, everything turned out well in the end. Desperate to push away the dirty politics of 1994, the governing body are ready to go ahead with this season.

There's a lot to look forward to for this season. Perhaps most importantly for the drivers and the constructors, a giant rules overhaul has been announced by the MIA and MKDA representative Yoshi T. Munchakoopas. This means that 1995 will be the final year operated under the current rule-set. Some of the front-running teams especially will likely see this as a useful way of shaking up the order, while the established teams all push for peak power.

And speaking of peak power, there have been a few major changes in the off-season. BMW, who broke the record last season for number of wins achieved, and who were in general domineering over their opposition, go into 1995 with the strongest line-up probably ever seen in Alt-Mario Kart. Bowser has convinced teammate and defending champion WARIO JUMPMAN #1 to stay on for another season, while managing to convince Luigi Mario to join as a customer driver.

This means, yes, you guessed it: all three Mario Kart champions will be at the same team this year. Not only that, but at the strongest team on the grid if 1994 is anything to go by. For the truth is that Marioserati seem to be going into the season level-pegging with the defending champions. Mituyoshi and Koopa Climax are not far behind, either.

Para Troopa, who last season supersubbed twice for Koopa Climax and BMW, has found himself a customer drive with Marioserati for this season. The grizzled war veteran seems to have something to prove, and has shown on the track that he has what it takes to win. Donkard Kong III, who had a tumultuous debut season last year, has found a works drive with Koopa Climax, seeking freedom with a good car than restriction with the best.

Mitsuyoshi and HBRT retain their lineups, while Diddy Kong is the sole Kongsworth runner after losing the 1992 Champion..

And so there we have it! Will 1995 see the Triple Alliance triumph? Or will we have a struggle between the Great Powers? An updated observation of the drivers' stats shows that Toad has been training very hard over the off-season, and could be an early favourite to take this year's title if he can sew a season together. Let's see how poorly that prediction ages.

Things to note pre-season
- The rules are almost exactly the same this season as before. Major rule changes will occur for 1996 though.
- One thing I've implemented is that all drivers switching teams have to start a new kart. This is to stop an unfair advantage of a driver joining a new team with an incredible advantage over their new teammates. It's just not realistic that way.
- As always, some drivers can choose if they start afresh with an SMK/95 or that they keep their kart from last season.
- The usual points system stays. 8 tokens given each Cup, 12 for the winner (5 and 10 for a customer).
- Any questions, just ask.

Mushroom Cup

Before the Cup, the dreaded Scrutineering took place. Three karts were found to be illegal: those of Peach, Koopa and Toad. All but Koopa bribed the MIA to take part regardless. This brought up the deeply unpopular issue to the forefront of driving discussions and there was a necessity for a post-race meeting.

When the Cup started, the BMWs and the Marioseratis seemed to be the frontrunners just as last season, with Mitsuyoshi only a little way behind. However, it is fair to say that few expected the success of Diddy Kong and Kongsworth power, especially after losing Luigi to the championship-winning team.

Indeed, for Luigi it was the comeback he had dreamed of. While Toad Toadstool started off the 1995 season well with a pole with a stellar lap, he was beaten off the line by Luigi and fast-starting Yoshi, the latter of whom seems to have been rejuvenated in the off-season. Luigi went on to win the race by a huge margin, reinforcing the trust that BMW have placed in their former rival. Diddy Kong took the final podium spot after an excellent qualifying and an excellent race, keeping out of trouble while the BMWs and the Marioseratis made trouble for themselves.

The following week, at another layout of the Mario Circuit, the defending champion put everything together. In a now-typical grand chelem, Jumpman took pole, fastest lap and the victory (by quite a margin), and looked in no doubt of victory throughout the weekend. Much of the talk was on Diddy Kong, who put a second consecutive brilliant weekend together to take 2nd and equal the championship leaders on 9 points. The Mitsuyoshis seemed disappointingly slow, with both Peach and Daisy showing little to no pace at all.

A return to Ghost Valley saw a very close qualifying, and a repeat of the general order of the Cup. All three BMWs and Toad appear to be the primary contenders going for the championship, and it was those who made up the top four. Again Wario was in perfect form, taking a second consecutive grand chelem and the outright championship lead. While Bowser had a second retirement, Luigi took a strong third behind Yoshi.

At his home race, Bowser got a terrible start and was passed on the opening lap by six other karts. While putting in the fastest lap to save face, he still finished 6th and out of the points, with a lowly 3 points with which to end the Cup. In a role reversal, Luigi had his first pole since Rainbow Road in 1993, but was beaten on the line by Toad, who took a convincing win at his enemy's doorstep.

Standings
Image

To conclude, it seems that Luigi and Wario are the consistent frontrunners. After the Flower Cup, we'll get a much better idea of the pace of Bowser and Toad, but they really need to finish strongly if they plan to go for the championship. Mitsuyoshi were absolutely nowhere, while I'm sure most of the competitors will be looking to Diddy Kong's kart to see about how such pace was achieved. BMW are the dominant team yet again, that much is for certain.

SCRUTINEERING
After the Cup, the MKDA members were briefed and polled on their opinions regarding the controversial scrutineering system that has seen so many drivers DSQd, seemingly at random. Yoshi, in taking feedback, has told the MIA to increase restrictions and tighten the screw on drivers who break the rules.

This is set to increase Yoshi's unpopularity, especially a year on from DK Jr's tragic accident. That also means that the MKDA members will have to put up with another year at least of Mr Munchakoopas' reign of terror.

Also passed along with the poll decision, is Yoshi's personal request that any and all checks on performance-enhancing drugs will be halted for the time being. Nothing to see here.

Flower Cup

Before the Cup began, the tightening of the Scrutineering process didn't seem to have too much of a dire effect in practice. The only kart found out of sorts was Mario's, and the eponymous hero paid handsomely to partake in the Cup. We therefore had our biggest ever grid for a Cup, with a huge 14 kart grid.

The first race was held at Choco Mountain, and there were serious concerns about the track surface that turned out to be totally and reasonably founded. The chocolate played havoc with the drivers' tyres, and towards the end of the opening race there were a variety of hilarious sticky moments. Wario, who secured pole, was beaten off the line and clearly had an issue of some kind. He retired later on in the race, and his teammate and 1994 championship rival Bowser Koopa took the victory instead. It was a welcome return to form for the Koopa King, who had suffered a dreadful Mushroom Cup.

A second round at Ghost Valley saw total domination from Toad, who again has eyes on the championship, if only the young driver can get a full season together. He led every qualifying session and dominated the race. Wario was back on the podium, while by this point Daisy and Peach had managed to break their respective ducks and put points on the table for Mitsuyoshi.

Bowser's recent disasters at Bowser's Castle continued. While Luigi had suffered ignominy by crashing during qualifying in the first two rounds, this time it was Bowser's turn. Starting from near the back, he embarrassed himself further in a tousle with Para Troopa, for which he got DSQd for. While Wario brought the BMW home for another win (his first of the Cup), there was a welcome surprise in the pace for Lewis Hammerton and Diddy Kong, the latter of whom genuinely challenged the reigning champion for the win until the end.

The Cup finale took place at Mario Circuit, and it was here that the real surprises happened. Para Troopa, in his 16th race, took a shock pole ahead of Wario, and managed to hold it off the line. Keeping the lead throughout, he also took his maiden win and gave Marioserati their best Cup performance since The Purge. Diddy Kong again was the spanner in the works, finishing second again and putting himself runner-up with these excellent performances.

And so there you have it. Star Cup is Tuesday 8pm CET on Discord next week.

Star Cup

If every season seems to have one Cup that turns things upside down, then the 1995 Star Cup was this year's crazy event.

To start with, three drivers couldn't scrape through scrutineering, and Peach, Luigi and Bowser were forced to pay bribes if they wanted to compete. Having had enough of the situation, Bowser put up a full protest against this and boycotted the whole Cup, creating controversy not seen since the like of Mario's protests in early 1994. A full-on beef commenced between the 1993 World Champion and the MKDA representative Yoshi Munchakoopas, and it escalated into a an unsanctioned fight that was scheduled for after the Cup between the two.

Getting on to the Cup itself, it was clear that Marioserati and its crew were bringing their absolute best, bringing along upgrades well on into the season. Their star driver Toad pulled out a pole lap at Mario Circuit, was bested off the line by Yoshi and Koopa Troopa, the latter of which had also seen a welcome return to form. Toad managed to take back his second place, but Koopa held the lead and put his first points on the board, in a win no less!

At Choco Island, Toad was again on pole, and again he was defeated off the line. This time, however, the main combatant was in fact his teammate Para Troopa! The fellow koopa, who had just taken his debut victory at the end of the Flower Cup, was full of confidence and boosted his way to a controversial win for the Marioserati team. With Toad no longer holding a totally secure lead, there are now two drivers in Marioserati who can challenge for the win. Mario himself took his first podium of the season, and it marked the first race in Mario Kart history when one engine/tyre marque has taken three of the points positions.

A return to the Choco Island circuit the following week saw a real surprise pole. Daisy von Sarasaland, who has had a torrid season after an excellent 1994, blitzed qualifying to take the first spot on the grid. However, in predictable Mitsuyoshi fashion, she binned it and retired on the first lap. Mitsuyoshi have yet to win this year, and their last victory is more than a year ago now. Koopa took a second win, with Para third and Yoshi second.

Koopa's incredible return to form continued at the Cup finale at his home circuit. Long in the shadow of King Bowser, he seems to have had a massive upswing in form in his master's absence. Pole and victory at Koopa Beach was perhaps the strongest win of his career, and gave him an equal-record 27 points with a second Cup victory to boot!

So what does this all mean in the end? Where was BMW? The answer to the second question is that, after four races and an absence of one of their drivers, they scored zero points. It was Wario's worst ever Cup, and his first to finish pointless. Luigi, who spent many tokens to appear, made consistent errors and was also pointless. Toad made some inroads on the championship with 12 points, but fell away towards the end of the Cup. Para Troopa's win puts the Marioserati runners neck and neck, eager for that championship. Koopa Troopa has gone from absolutely nowhere to 4th in the championship, leaving pundits wondering whether this is "the season that got away". Yoshi, who despite remaining winless has had one of his strongest seasons to date, could prove the dark horse in the championship fight.

As we run the Special Cup at lunchtime CET tomorrow, here are the standings post-Star Cup:

Following the loss in the big showdown against the reigning MKDA president Yoshisaur T. Munchakoopas, Bowser will return home to reconsider his future plans. This action was already planned, as Bowser will continue to boycott the Special Cup as planned given that nothing has changed in the scrutineering process.

It shall be explicitly stated, that Bowser will consider all options regarding his own career as well as the future of the Championship Winning Team. Both, Bowser’s membership in the MKDA and the involvement of the World Championship Winning team in the sport as a whole, will be questioned.

During this period Bowser will still be available to answer questions from the international press, but he won’t commend on the outcome of this questioning period until a full plan has been put together.

The Unsanctioned Yoshi vs. Bowser pay-per-view Event

1993 World Champion Bowser Koopa has had a long-lasting problem with scrutineering, and boycotted the Star Cup for this reason. When Yoshi refused to budge and remove the widely unpopular system, Bowser challenged him to a fight.

The fight was unsanctioned, but the MIA were willing to run bets on the winner. A total of 32 tokens were placed between the two fighters, and following the Cup the two had it out. The Great Fox was seen as a worthy venue, and it was there that they had a three-minute fight to the death. In short, Yoshi kicked Bowser’s arse, and after a while it was not very close. Yoshi (who has come under scrutiny for his recent enhancements in performance, coinciding with his recent ban on checks for performance-enhancing drugs) did not budge, and so Bowser announced he would boycott the Special Cup as well.

Special Cup

And so the 1995 season came to a close. The drivers were unhappy, the MIA were unhappy, and the stewards were unhappy. However, the fans were elated, after a dreadful Cup from Wario meant that at least the championship was open going into the final rounds. However, the Cup racing was overshadowed entirely at Scrutineering.

Foul play was involved when Toad was completely disqualified from participating in the Special Cup, with no appeal allowed. When the scrutineers moved to quickly continue with the Cup, a hired gun entered the paddock and shot MKDA steward Yoshisaur T. Munchakoopas. MIA security grabbed Munchakoopas and took him straight to intensive care via an armoured limo, where the rest of the paddock awaited news.

The entire Cup was therefore called off temporarily while this drama unfolded and the entire motorsport world were in grief over the health of Yoshi.

Eventually, the MIA came around and encouraged the drivers to do a delayed and truncated Special Cup, involving the planned double-header at Rainbow Road.

The first race saw an immediate return to form for Wario. On pole position, he had the best possible chance of extending his lead in the championship once again. Toad’s exclusion was upheld, meaning that Koopa and Para were his de facto main rivals for the championship now.

Off the line, Wario suffered a dreadful start and was overtaken by Koopa and Para, who started directly behind him. Para held the lead for much of the race in a heated battle with Koopa, when all of a sudden they all suffered catastrophic tyre failures. Peach, who had been driving rather unremarkably in sixth, shot up the order while her rivals retired, and won the race by default, as the only driver to finish it on the track. It brought Para Troopa within 1 point of Wario’s lead, and Koopa within 6 points going into the final round.

The final round was yet another major event. Para Troopa made a grave error in quali and was forced to start from the back. After this, Wario took a second consecutive pole, with Koopa alongside him. This time, Jumpman managed to keep his lead after the first lap, while Para crashed early on. This left Koopa as the only rival, and in the end Wario won the race and the Cup! This means that Wario Jumpman wins his second consecutive title and is the 1995 Mario Kart World Champion!

Sadly overshadowed by other events, Wario’s victory shows the power of BMW, even if the season was much closer against Marioserati than anticipated. How this power struggle will extend into the new regulations of 1996 remains to be seen. Until then, here are the final standings from the 1995 season:
