As a gift to Arrows for screwing over their sponsor negotiations, Mansour Ojjeh (McLaren) will pay half of their first driver's salary.

McLaren will also not contend with Footwork Project Four regarding driver bids.

1990 Scrub Era Sponsor RNG

Post by Aislabie »

Welcome to the first Scrub Era RNG, which has a slightly new RNG system which may or may not have interesting consequences.

We shall start with the slamdunkiest slam dunks, and then move on through the field.

First, we have Canon. They have only one first-choice offer, that coming from Williams. As an established partnership with a high-performing team, Canon accepts without any need for an RNG.

Anyway, we move on to Gitanes. As we all know, the French stereotypically love to smoke, something that was also true of Ligier's cars in 1989. This all-French pairing is the only first-choice offer on the table, but after a stinker of a season in 1989, the executives need a little convincing:
1-90 - Baguettes all round.
91-100 - Merde.

19 - The formalities are settled amicably over croissants, wine and other stereotypes.

Next up, Jagermeister. The German drunken mistakes manufacturer has only one first-choice offer, that being from Tyrrell. This is a huge step up from their DNPQ-fest in 1989 with EuroBrun, and Jagermeister accepts without need for any RNG.

Next we have Life Racing Engines. Ernesto Vita is just delighted to hear his phone ring and says the Italian for "Yes, yes, whatever you say" and then promptly hangs up and dances to the tune of his engine clanking. It turns out that call was from First Racing, so it remains to be seen if they'll make the start of the season.

We also have only one offer for West. That offer is from Team Lotus, who are only a couple of years removed from challenging for race wins and shite. Given that West had become used to their liveries adorning Zakspeed shitboxes, they accept without need for an RNG.

Benetton, Ferrari (FIAT) and Rial all stick with their pre-ordained sponsors, and so ends the boring portion of this RNG.

We now have our first contested sponsor. Fondmetal has offers on the table both from existing partners Osella, and - quite confusingly - Larrousse. Osella have a long-standing partnership, while Larrousse are offering full naming rights to the team, so the scales are pretty balanced here from Fondmetal's perspective:
1-50 - Osella continues with Fondmetal sponsorship
51-100 - Equipe... Fondmetal?

56 - We must hope that the new Fondmetal team keeps the Larrousse's zany colour scheme.

Next up we have Footwork. They have two offers on the table, both coming with a promise of a full rebrand. One of these teams is long-standing partner Arrows. The other one is... bathplug McLaren. Of course, Footwork have strong opinions on which they'd rather accept.
1-20 - Footwork sticks with long-standing partners Arrows, amid concerns that McLaren are just taking the piss
21-100 - It's the best team on the grid, they'd be mad not to do it

51 - Ron Dennis's phone is ringing

It's Mansour Ojjeh: "Ron, what the bathplug are you doing?"

"Well Mansour, I was rather convinced that the deft fleetness of foot reflected in the Footwork name perfectly reflected the central values to our design philosophy. The partnership between our two brands seems entirely natural, dynamic and... Mansour?"

Mansour Ojjeh had hung up the phone already by this point, and apologises to Footwork that he will be overruling Ron. The McLaren name is simply too valuable to be sold out like that.

This creates some special RNGs.

Firstly, Footwork are calling Arrows again. They really want their name on an F1 team:
1-50 - Jackie Oliver picks up the phone and accepts the money with open arms knowing that he will retain full operational control.
51-100 - Alan Jenkins picks up the phone and tells them to bathplug off.

71 - Neither team with first choice offers for Footwork gets them.

Secondly, McLaren. Mansour Ojjeh is not happy with his erstwhile Team Principal, and he is very much in two minds about the whole situation.
1-50 - It'll cost him a few hundred grand, but Ron has to be ousted for this
51-100 - Ron is on an absolute final warning, and the chassis will no longer be known as an "MP4"

28 - Ron is gone.

And with that, Project Four breaks away from McLaren due to *waves hands*. Using £300,000 of his buyout money, Project Four Racing makes a late bid for entry on the Formula One grid. TCBY (Laura) will be managing Project Four.

This is... not what I had planned, but I am having fun

Next up: Lamborghini. Everyone and their mums want to run carney Lambos this year: Brabham, Middlebridge, Onyx and Scuderia Italia are all interested. All of them offer full buyouts, with the exception of Scuderia Italia who merely want Lambo as an engine supplier and sponsor.
1-40 - Lamborghini Motor Racing Developments rolls right off the tongue
41-60 - Lamborghini enter the sport with a brand new team, operated by Middlebridge
61-80 - Onyx did impress a little bit with that Johansson podium
81-100 - I T A L I A

31 - F1 says goodbye to the Brabham name... again.

Next up, Leyton House. They have two offers on the table. One is a full rebrand of long-established F1 carnies March, and the other is a full rebrand of somewhat established general motorsport carnies Zakspeed.
1-80 - March becomes Leyton House
81-100 - Zakspeed becomes Leyton House, but probably don't expect to qualify or anything

15 - Yeah, that was an easy decision.

Lucchini has two offers from rival Italian scrublords Coloni and EuroBrun. Nothing much to report for the odds (and they're both on autopilot anyway) so it's just 50/50.
1-50 - Coloni
51-100 - Osella

19 - Forza Coloni.

And the final first-choice sponsor: SCM; it's the first choice of both Minardi and AGS. Minardi is Italian, and less calamitous, and therefore has the slight nod in these sweepstakes.
1-66 - Minardi
67-100 - AGS

40 - Minardi continue their partnership, and maybe one day we can find out what an SCM is.

- - - - -

We now enter the second round of bids and stuff, and oh boy do we have some carney shite here.

First we have Camel. They are quite offended at being snubbed by Lotus, but that frustration melts away when they pick up the phone to Mansour Ojjeh. They accept without RNG.

Next up, Footwork again. They have a trio of full rebrand offers: the first from new team Middlebridge, the second from Onyx, and the third from Ron Dennis.
1-30 - Footwork Racing as a brand new team
31-60 - Footwork Onyx will have their chassis officially named "Footwork"
61-100 - Footwork Project Four hype

65 - What a time to be alive.

Fashion designer Ted Lapitus has a couple of teams eyeing up his money. One is the very dashing Osella team and the other is France's number three F1 team, AGS. There's nothing much to choose between the two offers:
1-50 - Osella
51-100 - AGS

35 - Osella will run a Lapidus-liveried car.

Next up, we have Marlboro. They are absolutely fuming about the whole McLaren thing, and are not best pleased when Peter Zakowski is their first suitor, and still less pleased that he is their only suitor.
1-40 - Offer Zakowski the money, expecting to ask for it back later
41-100 - Leave Formula One in disgust

1 - Marlboro decide they've got to speculate to accumulate.

Next up, we have PIAA. Having been spurned by Tyrrell, they welcome an approach from BMS Scuderia Italia and accept without an RNG.

Subaru also accepts their offer from EuroBrun without any questions

- - - - -

Four teams remained without sponsorship at this time:

First, Elf opted to continue to sponsor AGS.

Monteverdi would enter F1 with their team being operated by Middlebridge Racing in what looks sure to be the Manor Racing Team of its time.

Toshiba had bids from both Arrows and Onyx: their preference leaned slightly towards the more established team:
1-60 - Toshiba Arrows
61-100 - Toshiba Onyx

47 - Arrows get new computers, while Onyx have to make do with free tyres from Pirelli.

So concludes this year's Sponsor RNG. The main spreadsheet has been updated to reflect recent developments. An announcement of the Driver RNG will be posted next

Scrub-Era F1: 1990 - Sponsor Signing

Post by Aislabie »

Sign Your Drivers!

Greetings all - it is time to sign your sponsors. This will be a huge step for a lot of teams, so let us first go over the rules:

Drivers
- Drivers are either "Salaried Drivers" or "Pay Drivers"
- Salaried Drivers have a suggested salary listed; teams can offer more or less than this value, but this affects their RNG odds.
- If a Salaried Driver is sacked partway through the season, their team will be expected to pay the remainder of their contract. If they are injured, then their salary will be covered by insurance.
- "Pay Drivers" pay a predetermined amount; you cannot ask them for any more money. If a Pay Driver is offered a salary, they cease to be a pay driver for the rest of their career.
- Pay Drivers pay their money up front for the agreed amount of races; should they be fired before completing their full contract, they will be repaid the difference.
- A maximum of one driver may be offered a two-year contract; one-year extensions can be offered during the pre-season of what would be the driver's final contracted year.
- Teams may not use more than four drivers in a season without specific dispensation from the FIA (me), and cannot fire a driver before they have been entered to a race weekend.
[/quote]You are of course welcome to go off-spreadsheet with your driver bids, but such drivers are by no means guaranteed to serve your team well.

Finally, teams with a current budget of under £500,000 may choose to set a reserve price for one of its race seats. This would see their team automatically withdraw their bid if the driver in question didn't bring enough money.

I'm going to assume you meant Geoff Brabham here, as the other one doesn't exist in this universe we're crafting.

Also, I really do advise you to do a spot of spreadsheeting here to figure out what you'll need to do to make the grid

Since the EuroBrun merger talks have fallen through, we'd like to offer Enrico Bertaggia the second seat instead if he gibs monies. Failing that, since they're clearly struggling financially, we propose a complete takeover of the Benetton team with the mighty resources of Monteverdi and Middlebridge ready to take them to the promised land :deletraz:

Scrub-Era F1: 1990 Driver RNG

Post by Aislabie »

Hello and welcome to another round of Scrub Era RNG! This one will be the real acid test of the First Choice First system I think, and is sure to have some intriguing outcomes.

First up is Jean Alesi. The young Frenchman has three offers: Benetton are offering slightly more money, but McLaren are offering the best car on the grid. Leyton House are offering neither of those things
1-40 - Benetton
41-50 - Leyton House
51-100 - McLaren

59 - The 1989 International F3000 Champion is called straight into the World Champion team. Huge for his career.

Next up, Philippe Alliot has an offer from Ligier. This is the de facto French national team, and he accepts. He's a Tier B pay driver, which means the range is between 100k and 300k. He brings £115,000.

The almost-retired René Arnoux has an offer. He has said he would unretire for a potentially race-winning drive. He has asked for a salary of a bit over a quarter-million pounds. So naturally, AGS has asked him to drive for free.
1 - René Arnoux is very drunk when he answers the phone
2-100 - But still not drunk enough to confuse AGS with "McLaren-Honda"

56 - Arnoux retires for good.

Next up we have Paolo Barilla. We know up front how much money he's bringing - it's an eye-watering £475,000. He has offers from two absolute giants of the sport: EuroBrun and Zakspeed.
1-45 - As an Italian, it has to be EuroBrun
46-100 - He's heard about the Marlboro money and wants a piece of the action

10 - Huge money for the tiny team.

Next up, Gerhard Berger has a single offer on the table. Tyrrell has offered him £305,000. A little bit under the odds for the Austrian, and a bit of a drop down the grid from Ferrari.
1-90 - A bad offer is still better than no offer
91-100 - Perhaps another team will give him what he asks for

44 - Berger signs on the dotted line.

Enrico Bertaggia has a single offer for his questionable talents, from the Monteverdi team. He accepts and takes his fat stack of cash to scenic Switzerland the industrial estate in Beeston where Middlebridge operates the team from.

Rookie Mark Blundell has two offers on the table. One of them is from Fondmetal, who want him to pay money for his drive. The other is from Lamborghini, who want to pay him for his drive to the tune of £120,000
A paid gig with a works team is huge for a rookie and he accepts without need for RNG.

Anyway, we move on to the two drivers who have offers from First Life Racing Engines. They are David and Geoff Brabham. I know Baker wrote Gary, but Gary doesn't exist so we presume it to be a clerical error as there's only one G. Brabham to be found. Both drivers accept, but how much money will they bring?

David is drawn as a Tier C pay driver - that range is between 50k and 150k. RNGesus blesses him with £92,000.
Geoff is drawn as a Tier B pay driver, and RNGesus blesses him with an eye-watering £281,000. That will help First, but will it be enough to see them survive the pre-season?

Ivan Capelli now, and he has two near-matching offers on the table. The only difference is between the teams who've offered them: it's 160 grand each from Minardi and Scuderia Italia.
1-50 - Goes for Minardi
51-100 - Chooses Scuderia Italia

4 - History will forget that he so much as had a second offer.

Next up is speedy rookie Erik Comas. He has offers from both AGS and Minardi, which are implicitly entry-level seats.
1-60 - Follows the French connection (with the full support of Elf)
61-100 - Instead chooses the team that happens to be far better run

37 - Comas knows which side his baguette is buttered. But how thickly buttered will it be? He brings £109,000, which isn't bad for C-Tier.

Christian Danner has a single offer; it comes from Rial, and appears to be good for £150,000. He accepts it without RNG.

Now for a big one: Andrea de Cesaris is bringing a startling £480,000 to the table. Five teams have jumped at it, and they are: Benetton, Lamborghini, Monteverdi, Scuderia Italia and Tyrrell. Not all offers are created equal of course:
1-40 - Benetton
41-60 - Lamborghini
61-65 - Monteverdi
66-75 - Scuderia Italia
76-100 - Tyrrell
Image

95 - de Cesaris goes to Tyrrell and Kinnik's RNG woes continue unabated.

We now have a string of uncontested offers, but that doesn't mean any shortage of RNG action as they're all pay drivers.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen accepts an excellent rookie drive at Lotus, but how much money will he bring in? A paltry £86,000. Every little helps I guess.

Next up we have Bertrand Gachot! His only first-choice offer is from Ligier, but they've asked him if he'd pretty please like to become French for them.
1-40 - Remains Belgian
41-70 - Becomes French as asked
71-90 - Becomes a Luxembourger out of spite
91-100 - Persuades the FIA to let him drive under the EU flag

77 - Gachot will become the first driver to represent Luxembourg in F1 since Honoré Wagner, and the outright first in a World Championship event. He will also bringing £185,000 in as he does so.

Fabrizio Giovinardi has an offer from Coloni. It's an F1 seat, so he accepts - but how much will he bring? It's a huge £474,000. Looks like he'll have a place on the grid for years to come.

Olivier Grouillard is next. He accepts his Osella offer, but how much does he bring them? His briefcase contains £173,000.

Next up we have Mauricio Gugelmin. He brings in a hearty £224,000 which both Arrows and Leyton House have decided is not to be sniffed at
1-40 - Takes a sideways move to Arrows
41-100 - Continues to ply his trade at the former March team

79 - No change for the Brazilian.

Nicola Larini, accepts his solitary offer from Coloni. He brings in a tidy £101,000.

The next driver to receive a first-choice offer is 35-year-old Oscar Larrauri. He's delighted as this is probably the first time he's been first-choice for anything, including PE at school, but how much money will he bring to the EuroBrun team? £143,000 is not nearly as much as they might have expected.

Now we come to one of our first properly big names: it's 90 MANSELL. Williams have thrown a million quid at him, and not only that, but they're the only call he's had. He accepts without a second's thought.

Stefano Modena is also in demand. He has conflicting offers from Arrows and Footwork Project Four.
1-50 - It's an established midfield team
51-100 - Ron Dennis just won all of the things and now I get to drive for him?

63 - Modena moves to Project Four, and his £293,000 of funding could have huge implications for FPF.

Gianni Morbidelli has accepted an offer from Onyx to make his Formula One bow. How much money does he bring them? He brings in £99,000, or one hundred thousand Flakes.

Osella have decided to bring in Roberto Moreno for that rarest of things - a full season drive. He brings in an adequate sum of money at £128,000.

Alessandro Nannini also has only one drive on the table. It's the second Williams seat, for more money than he asked for. He accepts,

Luis Perez-Sala has a baffling offer from Lotus. Who is managing Lotus? @DigitDan7 must have a strategy of some kind here. Ah, the £297,000 of funding might explain it.

Nelson Piquet has only one offer: Ferrari have lobbed a million quid at him, which he accepts.

Alain Prost doesn't even think twice before re-signing with McLaren to defend his World Championship.

Next up, rookie Roland Ratzenberger accepts a Fondmetal drive. How many thousands of pounds does he bring the team? 149 thousands of pounds.

AYRTON SENNA DO BRASIL has a single solitary offer, and it sure as shite isn't from McLaren. It's another million quid from Ferrari. What a time to be alive.

Aguri Suzuki has also accepted his solitary offer, so how much money will he be paying Ron Dennis's merry men? £202,000.

Volker Weidler signs for Onyx, bringing £168,000.

The final first round RNG is a contested one between Rial and Zakspeed. They are after the services of Karl Wendlinger
1-50 - Wendlinger signs for the troubled German team with the eccentric egomaniacal team principal
51-100 - Wendlinger signs for the troubled German team with the eccentric egomaniacal team principal that just got Marlboro money

63 - A strong signing for Zakspeed, and how much richer are they about to get? It's an extra £131,000.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The second choice picks were broadly speaking uncomplicated:

Marco Apicella agreed to pay £100,000 to Fondmetal.

Eric Bernard paid £110,000 for the privilege of driving for Leyton House.

Thierry Boutsen accepted an excellent paid offer from Benetton.

Alex Caffi needed only £76,000 to buy himself a drive at Minardi.

Alain Ferté[/b ]finally finds his way into Formula One at the ripe old age of 35, and all it took was [b]£225,000.

Johnny Herbert gets himself an Arrows seat, which isn't to say it came exactly cheaply at £149,000.

Monteverdi offered their remaining seat to Canada's John Jones, but he couldn't find the money to pay for it.

Ukyo Katayama has a drive with Lamborghini, and Lamborghini has £173,000 in Japanese yen.

Pierluigi Martini will be paid £160,000 to drive for Scuderia Italia.

Satoru Nakajima brings £333,000 to Zakspeed.

Reigning Japanese F3000 Champion Hitoshi Ogawa accepts a left-field offer from Arrows to partner Johnny Herbert, bringing in £130,000 to the team.

Michael Schumacher has an offer on the table too, but he's not completely convinced by Rial. Wonders if Sauber sportscars might be better for his career.
1-80 - Let's be real, it's F1.
81-100 - Hmmm yes, Mercedes meal ticket.

76 - After considerable thought, Schumacher signs on the dotted line, but brings in the bare minimum £50,000 of funding because he is a cheapskate.

Gabriele Tarquini signs with Scuderia Italia, bringing in a tidy £115,000.

And finally, Eric van de Poele accepts a surprise offer for the second Benetton seat, bringing in a cool £189,000.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

There is now only one seat left on the entire grid, and it is that of Monteverdi, who want a minimum of £400,000 for the damn thing.

Eric van de Poele's £189,000 was not enough.

Ross Cheever couldn't get within £100,000 of the target.

Andrew Gilbert-Scott couldn't even get halfway.

However, just when all seemed lost, 1989 Indy Lights champion Mike Groff arrived with £446,000 to complete the grid.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This concludes the Driver RNG. Information for Chassis, Engines and Tyres coming soon. In the meantime, your budgets are updated on the index spreadsheet to reflect your new signings.

Scrub-Era F1: 1990 - Chassis, Engine and Tyre Signing

Post by Aislabie »

Build Your Cars!

Now that you've all got your sponsors and drivers, your bank accounts are (mostly) the healthiest they're going to look for a long time. First things first, some rules to consult:
Chassis
- Teams can either build a new chassis for 1990, or update their 1989 chassis for the new season.
- Should a team choose to buy a customer chassis, they will earn World Constructors Championship prize money for that chassis.
- Chassis may be sold and traded from team to team, but may only be used if a team chooses to "Make It Your Own". If in doubt, check with Aislabie.
- If you wish to upgrade your chassis in-season, you can invest in a B-Spec chassis, but only if you have the available funds. (This is in place of a race-by-race upgrade system.)

Engines
- All teams must buy an engine supply for the season.
- Teams which build their engines have control over whether or not they sell their engines to customer teams.
- Should a team choose to change their engine supplier mid-season, they will have to buy a new full-season engine contract on top of the one they already have.

Tyres
- You will need tyres. Please budget for them.

Going Bankrupt
- Your team will go bankrupt if, at the end of the pre-season, you are unable to pay the FIA Entry Fees (which include travel costs). For a one-car team this is £300,000 and for a two-car team this is £500,000.
- Your team will also go bankrupt if they do not manage to build a car, consisting of adequate chassis, engine(s) and tyres
Teams who want Ferrari or Lamborghini customer engines would be advised to negotiate directly with Anna (Frogfoot) and Jake (Ataxia) respectively - you may be able to negotiate a good price on them.

This is also the point in the season where if you need to fire a driver without it counting towards your four-driver limit, or paying out a full season's wages (in the case of a salaried driver) - either to downsize to a one-car team or to make ends meet financially - you can make a request to do so. If you choose to fire a driver at this point, it will not count towards your four-driver limit, but it will mean that the driver will refuse to drive for your team again at any point in their career.
