Ayrton Senna now joins Sir Stirling Moss as a 3-time champion! It's taken 33 years for someone to finally match that record and with Michael Andretti being Ayrton Senna's teammate for 1993 I'm sure he now has a good chance to become a 4-time champion.

I kinda thought De Cesaris could be a dark horse for 1992 with some impressive points finishes and Grouillard doing nothing at all in the other car apart from getting in the leaders' way (most notably nearly taking out Mansell at Imola) - but didn't see Senna for that year as Berger's points total was so close to his. Better reliability for Berger though IIRC.

I went back to check Senna and Berger again there were a number of occasions when Senna retired during the race while lapping ahead of Berger who then went onto finish the race and score points, this happened in Mexico, Spain, Canada, Britain, Japan and Australia.

1993

Ayrton Senna broke the record and now has won this championship 4 times! Although his teammate Michael Andretti did manage to get in at least 5 laps ahead! Mika Häkkinen didn't count for this season since he only entered 3 races, his score tally against Senna for those wondering looked like this, Senna 81 - Häkkinen 0.

I had to look where Andretti got his five laps. Four in Germany after Senna spun on the first lap (Andretti would retire after four laps) and then one in Italy where Senna lost time after his clash with Hill. Andretti then pitted on the second lap to drop back.

Michael Schumacher has won his first championship and in style too, leading every single lap ahead of Jos Verstappen. However, Heinz-Harald Frentzen came very close and finished just 0.5% behind because Andrea de Cesaris managed to get in just one lap ahead in France.

Just thinking, maybe he blotted his copybook with that mistake at Imola but Schumacher Jr could well be in the running for this year with someone utterly useless in the other car. I mean even Bottas and Perez had a significant number of laps ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen respectively today!

Russell currently leads the 2021 championship but it is very close at the top with Verstappen and Schumacher in 2nd and 3rd,

1. Russell 107 = 93.0%

Michael Schumacher won again this year, he's still a new driver to F1 and could be the favourite to match or beat Senna's record of 4 championships. Also, Heinz-Harald Frentzen finished again as the runner up and it was another close one, only 1.3% separated the two drivers!

Quite shocking for Hill that he was only 2% better against Diniz in the Oven than he was against Villeneuve!

So if Diniz is equal to Villeneuve, and Villeneuve beat Frentzen, and Frentzen beat Hill, and Hill beat Villeneuve, then that must mean......something!

Yeah and from San Marino too when Hill was briefly ahead after Frentzen pitted.

Ooh, this is an interesting one! :)

I'd like to make a few predictions for 2001, if I may...

My Top 2 possible title contenders are:
Verstappen (vs. Bernoldi),
Alesi (vs. Mazzacane).

I don't think neither Irvine nor Alonso stand too much of a chance. I can't remember Burti being a pushover, and though Marques was still underwhelming while Alonso pushed the PS01 to overall decent results, I presume that Marques was a bit more competitive towards the beginning of the season, when he still had his experience bonus.

So, who could win 2001? My bets are on Alesi!

2001

Jos Verstappen wins his second championship. It was very close only 1.0% separated him from second place and that was Jarno Trulli, who performed very well against both Frentzen and Alesi.

Top 3

1. Verstappen
2. Trulli
3. Fisichella

4. Alonso 282 = 76.8%
5. M Schumacher 660 = 75.6%
6. Irvine 367 = 74.5%

You were right about mentioning Verstappen having a chance. Yeah, most of Marques laps came from the start of the season and once Alonso got a hang of things later on the gap between them grew and in the end, Alonso finished 4th. Unfortunately, Mazzacane didn't qualify for this championship since drivers must complete at least 50% of the season to be included.

Yeah, I had completely forgotten about the driver changes that happened that season. Somehow I was under the impression Mazzacane stayed at Prost until Frentzen came over. And only then he got replaced by Burti.

But Fisichella nearly destroying Button... I knew Jenson had nothing to laugh in his first year at Benetton, but I had never thought it was this big of a desaster.

I remember reading an article where Button explained about his time against Fisichella at Benetton.

“My team-mate was Giancarlo Fisichella who is notoriously good at driving really bad cars, so he blew me away a lot of the time, and mentally that really hurt, I didn’t get it.”

A fledgeling Button quickly lost confidence in Benetton’s challenging environment. “I really struggled because I just didn’t think I was good enough, ‘I’m not driving quickly enough, I just don’t have any skill’,” he added.

Thanks for the link to the article. Was a very interesting read! :)

It's always sad to see a young driver struggle so much that he or she begins to have self-doubt. And Button's absolutely right: His lack of engineering experience was his main achilles heel at that time. Raw speed only gets you so far when you're suddenly given a dog of a car to drive. The B201 and its very experimental engine was a totally different kind of game than the much more competitive Williams from 2000.

It also seemed to me that Sir Frank and Patrick Head really wanted Button in their team, while Flavio was only interested in snatching him up so that no other team could get a hold of him.

Luckily, Button soldiered on through all of this and finally found success with Brawn. That championship in 2009 was something F1 desperately needed (and maybe needs again today more than ever).

Oh, btw, my prediction for 2002: Mark Webber. Has to be. Unless I forget some driver changes again, Yoong should have been no match for him.

Probably Webber indeed, but I think Frentzen and Salo are dark horses to snatch it.

2003 should be just as predictable: My bets are on Fisichella! I can't really remember what exactly went down at Jaguar that year, but I know Pizzonia didn't stay on the entire time, so no idea how strong Webber is going to be. Verstappen, on the other hand, shouldn't have it too easy with Wilson at Minardi, if I recall correctly. So he should be out of the title hunt. I might be wrong, though.

I said Webber in my original predictions for 2003 but think Kimi has a good chance - DC was often trying to make progress from poor grid positions. It was probably Barrichello's best year in comparison to Schumacher too.

2003

Mark Webber secured his second championship! He's closing in on Stirling Moss and Michael Schumacher who have 3 and the all-time record 4 titles held by Ayrton Senna. It was actually another comfortable year for Webber with no one really giving him a challenge, he finished 9.1% ahead of second-place Giancarlo Fisichella.

Yeah, I think that has to be maybe the closest we've ever had.

Off to a good start! I would pick someone else for 2006 because none of Sato's teammates will qualify for the championship since they didn't enter enough races, they need to complete half the season at least.

2004

Mark Webber wins his third title and becomes the first driver in this championship to win three years in a row! He's now on the same amount as Stirling Moss and Michael Schumacher! Although Mark Webber this year didn't dominate his teammate as much as the previous years, it was still just enough to win, only Michael Schumacher came close to giving him a challenge this time.

Jenson Button puts an end to Mark Webber's win streak! All thanks to Nick Heidfeld who finally gave Mark Webber a proper challenge. Jenson Button finished comfortably ahead of second-place by 14.0%.

I think Webber might get one more chance to make it 4 (2008 with Coulthard in wind-down to retirement mode). Certainly he won't win any more once Vettel joins him at red Bull!

I had totally forgotten that Button was so much stronger than Sato in that year. :o

I was so sure Coulthard had the championship in the bag, seeing that he was pitted against Klien, who already was no match for Webber and therefore should have been even weaker against a former race winner with nothing to loose.

Loving the Monteiro-Karthikeyan rivalry!

I'm not sure either Vettel or Webber will win a championship, same with Hamilton, between 2007-2013, just because of the intra-team competition. If Alonso dominates Massa he might win one or two.

Kubica must surely dominate 2010 I think?
