Lap In Front of Your Teammate Championship - Moss Cup

Post by Zenarcher »

How it works,

1. This is something I've been working on for a while so as you know most championships focus on the end race result this one is based on how each driver performs during every lap of the race against their own teammate in equal machinery.

2. Whichever driver has the highest percentage of laps completed ahead of their teammate or teammates wins the championship.

3. The laps are only counted when the drivers are racing if one retires the counting of laps stops.

4. It doesn't matter if you have the worst or best car on the grid since your only against your teammate it's more likely to have any driver to win the championship.

5. The data used is from the lap by lap stats from the "statsf1" website.

6. Drivers must at least complete half of the season to qualify for entering the championship. For the 50's the Indy 500 was not counted as one of the races for this championship.

Yeah, I think it tells more of the story in a way on how they were doing during the race and how strong their pace was. I know some drivers had weaker or stronger teammates but it's still interesting. The 50's and 60's saw drivers having many teammates each season but by the 70's I hope to introduce better clearer graphics comparing teammates when it's just 2 or 3 drivers in the same car.

1960

Jack Brabham takes his first championship with 86% of laps led while the best of the rest could only manage 68%. Brabham went up against the three-time champ Moss along with McLaren, Trintignant, Brooks, Taylor, Gendebien and P Hill.

What Fittipaldi couldn't even win with reject star Dave Walker in the other car???

BTW the answer to this is probably obvious but are teams who only run one car (like a lot of small teams did in the 80s and early 90s) ineligible to count here?

Yeah poor Fittipaldi not a good day for him. Team's need to have at least two cars racing at the same time for it to count that way we can compare the teammates. So just like some of the teams in the '50s and '60s that had one car they won't count in this championship.

1973

Mario Andretti won this year's championship but just narrowly ahead of the debut driver Ian Scheckter who came in an impressive 2nd place. Sadly this will be Ian Scheckter's only season for this championship as he had a very short-lived F1 career. Another interesting note is Ronnie Peterson who has always done consistently well in this championship making the top 3 many times, dropped back this year after switching to Tyrrell and their 6 wheeled car I wonder if this didn't suit him.

This is the only legitimate, performance-based championship that I've seen the other Scheckter get remotely close, let alone put up a legitimate, close fight for the title.

We have Ribeiro to thank for that, though, I bet.
My friend's USB drive spoiled, spilled tea on her laptop and had a bird poo in her hand.

What did she do in her past life to deserve this?

Yeah, I suppose that's what makes this championship a bit more unique seeing that almost anyone can win it in a good or bad car.

1978

Riccardo Patrese becomes the fourth driver so far to have led 100% of all laps ahead of their teammate only John Surtees (twice), Jack Brabham and Dan Gurney have achieved this. Last years champion Mario Andretti came close to winning again and he beat his teammate Ronnie Peterson by some margin although Ronnie Peterson was always usually just 1 place behind Mario Andretti. I'll admit I don't know too much about the 1970's F1 so I searched if there was a reason for this and came across an article from last year at goodwood.com,

Andretti has always been open that his deal for ’78 stated clearly he was the team number one, and that ‘Super-Swede’ Peterson signed and accepted his place as the number two. Mario would face a backlash during the season amid accusations that Peterson was naturally quicker and all things being equal, would have beaten the American. It’s a perception – and an unfair one – that still hangs over Andretti’s title even today.

“I’d known Ronnie for a long time, and I knew he was an honourable guy,” says Andretti. “It’s quite true I was less than delighted when Colin suggested that Ronnie should come back to Lotus. I felt that I’d played my part in bringing the team back to the front, and I also felt that 1978 would give me my best shot at the title. I didn’t want anything to screw that up.

“Ronnie was a fantastic race driver. The man was a number one driver, nothing else. It seemed ridiculous to me that a guy with his ability and experience should have to accept the restrictions of a number two. At the same time, I’d made my position clear to Colin. The agreement was that if both cars were running at the front with no problems, then I was to win. Ronnie accepted that when he signed his contract. More importantly, he gave his word.”

And to Peterson’s eternal credit, he kept it.

Alan Jones won his first championship and the last of the 1970s. This year was the closest championship we've had in a while since the early 1960s, with most of the teammates split 50/50 more than usual.

Yeah instead of who has the best car it's now who's got the worst teammate.

1981

Riccardo Patrese secured his second championship this year and managed to just finish ahead of last years winner Nelson Piquet. It was actually a close title fight with the top 5 all leading over 90% of laps ahead of their teammates!

Also has plenty of time left to try and match Stirling Moss who has the most championships so far with 3 titles to his name.

I'm laughing at Jochen Mass winning 1982 considering how much he was thumped by in 1976 with James Hunt. Boesel must really have been rubbish!

I'll have a go at predicting 1984 to date:

1984 Piquet against both Fabis
1985 Piquet again
1986 Senna (against Dumfries)
1987 Senna again - Nakajima was way behind him all the time
1988 Berger - Alboreto was trailing in his wake most of the time
1989 Nannini against Herbert/Pirro
1990 Alesi
1991 Senna - I barely recall Berger being ahead at all
1992 Alesi - Capelli had a disaster
1993 Senna - easy against Andretti and even Hakkinen wasn't ahead in races
1994 Schumacher
1995 Schumacher again, maybe Frentzen will challenge him
1996 Schumacher
1997 Has to be Schumacher again unless he gets DQ'd due to Jerez. If he does then Villeneuve.
1998 Has to be Schumacher!
1999 Frentzen against a very poor Hill
2000 Villeneuve
2001 Irvine
2002 Webber
2003 Webber
2004 Button
2005 Think Button again as Sato was complete rubbish
2006 Alonso
2007 Rosberg
2008 Kubica
2009 Hamilton
2010 Kubica
2011 Vettel
2012 Alonso
2013 Hulkenberg
2014 Alonso
2015 Hamilton
2016 Alonso
2017 Hulkenberg
2018 Alonso
2019 Verstappen
2020 Verstappen

Though I could be missing a dominant driver in a backmarker team!

Schumacher had difficulties in 1998 - Monaco, Austria, Japan. I think we might end with Takagi as a champion with Rosset as a team-mate.

God a long way out there! I'd forgotten how much Lauda struggled in 1985, I had thought a lot of his bad luck was reliability rather than poor pace.

Yeah, the backmarker teams can be difficult to predict I think they might throw up more surprises later on too!

While I work on the 1990's stats and graphics I thought it would be a good time to look back on the first four decades of the championship. So far 21 drivers have won just one championship, 8 have managed to win two, however, only one man has managed to win three that being Sir Stirling Moss! Up to 1989, 31 years later no one has yet equalled him so in honour of this, the championship will be renamed to "Lap In Front of Your Teammate Championship - Moss Cup".

Okay, so a quick little stat, of the 30 drivers who have won, 17 are actually real-life world champions and 13 non-real life champions.

Anyone else stunned by how few laps Prost was ahead of Senna for on his way to the 1989 title?

Yep, it shocked me too considering in 1988 they were closer, Senna 59% and Prost 41%. For 1989 I made a graph showing how the season panned out and wrote a summary below to give a clearer picture of how Senna managed to get so many laps in ahead during 1989 despite Prost winning the championship.

Image

At the season opener in Brazil Senna lost his front wing after making contact with Berger at the race start which allowed Prost to get 61 laps in ahead of Senna. In the following 3 races, Senna lapped ahead of Prost until the race in America when Senna who was leading developed a technical issue with his car this allowed Prost to get 11 laps ahead before Senna retired from the race. In Canada saw Prost retire on only lap 2 and in France Senna retired before even completing a lap. In Britain Senna led the first 11 laps ahead of Prost before he spun off with gearbox issues.

In Germany, they both lapped about 50% of the time ahead of each other. Senna led every single lap ahead in Hungary and Belgium which helped him get a big lead that's 121 laps, the score was now Senna 392 - Prost 105. In Italy Senna added another 44 laps to his score until his engine had problems and forced him to retire. More bad luck happened to Senna in the following race at Portugal after 48 more laps ahead of Prost he and Mansell collided. The following race Senna again led all the laps ahead and added 73 more to his score it was now Senna 557 - Prost 105, in fact, Prost hadn't completed a full lap ahead of Senna in 5 races by this point the last time being in Germany.

However, all of that changed in Japan, Prost made a comeback and managed 43 laps ahead of Senna then in the final race Prost withdrew from it so the end results are Senna 560 - Prost 148. I guess Prost had more luck on his side he only retired twice (if you don't include Australia) while Senna had 8 non-finishes (Classified 7th in Canada but retired a few laps before with engine issues and got disqualified in Japan). The lap by lap data tells a different story to the real championship result and showed Senna being ahead of Prost for 1989 by some margin.

Pierluigi Martini wins the first championship of the 1990s! It was a close year with Stefano Modena and Jean Alesi coming a very close second and third.
