The F1 Elimination Playoffs

Post by yellowcat5 »

The idea of this is that I will use the playoffs that NASCAR uses, with 3 race rounds and 4 drivers eliminated after each round. As this will not work for the earlier years where next to no drivers did every single race, I will start in 2017 and go backwards. Each driver also gets 5 points for every race they win during the regular season and the playoffs. That being said, here is your opening playoff list for 2017 (last race before the playoff was the Italian GP):

Lewis Hamilton 530
Sebastian Vettel 520
Valtteri Bottas 510
Daniel Ricciardo 505
Kimi Raikkonen 500
Max Verstappen 500
Sergio Perez 500
Esteban Ocon 500
------ Cutoff ------
Carlos Sainz 500
Nico Hulkenberg 500
Felipe Massa 500
Romain Grosjean 500

After the first 2 race of Round 1 at Singapore and Malaysia, Kimi Raikkonen looked to have been in big trouble, as his DNF's in both put him below the cutline going into the final race of round 1 at Japan. Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen locked themselves in round 2 with their respective wins, while Daniel Ricciardo, Valtteri Bottas, and Sebastian Vettel have all locked themselves in round 2 on points. Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz looked to have a decent gap going into Japan, but after that there was a 3-way tie for the final spot between Romain Grosjean, Felipe Massa, and Esteban Ocon. The previously mentioned Raikkonen and Nico Hulkenberg were also out.

Lewis Hamilton 573
Daniel Ricciardo 538
Valtteri Bottas 535
Sebastian Vettel 532
Max Verstappen 525

Sergio Perez 518
Carlos Sainz 512
Romain Grosjean 502
------ Cutoff ------
Felipe Massa 502
Esteban Ocon 502
Kimi Raikkonen 500
Nico Hulkenberg 500

After the final race of round 1 at Japan, we now knew which 8 drivers would advance to round 2 and which would not. Nico Hulkenberg's retirement solidified that he would be eliminated, while Carlos Sainz's retirement at the start of the race put him in danger. At the end, Sergio Perez was safely in, Sainz made enough points from the first 2 races of the round to advance, Romain Grosjean and Felipe Massa failed to score enough points and were eliminated, and Kimi Raikkonen beat Esteban Ocon in a tiebreaker for the final spot in round 2.

Lewis Hamilton 1040
Sebastian Vettel 1020
Valtteri Bottas 1010
Daniel Ricciardo 1005
Max Verstappen 1005
Sergio Perez 1000
Carlos Sainz 1000
Kimi Raikkonen 1000
----- Eliminated -----
Esteban Ocon 510
Romain Grosjean 504
Felipe Massa 503
Nico Hulkenberg 500
