And another name from the seventies leaves us...

John Nicholson, who holds the dubious distinction of being the only man to drive a Lyncar in world championship competition (he was, after all, the man who requested one be built), has died aged 75.

On top of being an amateur racing driver of respectable ability, John was also an engine builder who supplied some of Cosworth's ubiquitous DFVs to a number of teams, most notably McLaren, who won the 1974 and 1976 world championships with engines tuned and supplied by Nicholson's business.

With Nicholson's death, there are now only three F1 drivers from New Zealand who still live: Howden Ganley, Graham McRae and the Australian-raised Mike Thackwell.
