F1 1985+

Post by BioBiro »

Hello and welcome, to the second season of my virtual non-canon 1985 Formula One championship - F1 1985+!

This season will be very much 'evolution', rather than 'revolution', with gameplay largely the same as 1984. However, a few new features will be introduced - some of them requiring player response, others merely providing more - or differently formatted - information.

Below this post are the following sections, which are edited with updated information on a regular basis:

Essays, dissertations, theses and thoughts from third-party contributors:

If you'd like to join-in, just ask to be added to the queue; at the moment, patiently stood in-line are:

Teams may go into debt. Your lending limit is your starting budget. Any team that is in-debt to more than the amount of their budget at the start of the season (a starting budget of £7,500,000 means you may borrow as much as -£7,500,000) will be declared bankrupt and immediately disqualified from the series. Finishing the season (defined as: after the winter off-season D&T period) with a negative balance will result in immediate bankruptcy.

Teams are ordered by finishing position in 1984 constructor's championship.

Below each team are the performance-related statistics of your current car. With regards to 'Drag', higher percentages mean more aerodynamic drag, lower percentages mean less drag. Reliability refers to the mechanical parts of the car, such as the front and rear suspension, gearbox, steering assembly, etc.

Currently, there is a minimum weight limit of 540kg.

Formula 1 Teams

Factory-Backing Key:
  • Manufacturer (Full support) - a team is the priority team for a manufacturer, and is in receipt of financial and engineering support.
  • Manufacturer (Partial support) - a team is of secondary, or lower, priority for a manufacturer, and is in receipt of financial and engineering support.
  • Manufacturer (Limited support) - a team, of extraneous priority, is in receipt of financial or engineering support from a manufacturer.
  • Non-manufacturer - a team is in receipt of financial support.
  • Independent - a team is not in receipt of financial or engineering support from a manufacturer or non-manufacturer.

D&T (Development & Test) Opportunities
D&T (Development & Test) opportunities are where you upgrade your current car, design your next car, and perform other miscellaneous tasks.

All teams may perform as many development & testing opportunities as there are weeks between events (a total of forty opportunities; the winter break between seasons having been halved for gameplay balance-reasons). Refer to the calendar at the start of the thread for a listing of where D&T opportunities fall within the season schedule.

All D&T (development & testing) opportunities cost £60,000 each, multiplied by the number of cars in your team. The cost goes up for the next D&T opportunity, each time, by an additional £20,000, multiplied by the number of cars in your team. This is designed to work on a 'paying increasing amounts for smaller and smaller improvements' model. All car improvements are applied to all your cars.

So, a single car team will pay £60k for their first D&T opportunity, £80k for the next one, £100k for the one after that, etc. A two car team will pay £120k for their first D&T opportunity, £160k for the next one, £200k for the one after that, etc.

The more cars you run in your team, the higher the development rewards will be.

The cost of your next D&T opportunity is listed at the start of the thread, under each team's car data. For reference, complete lists of the costs of all forty D&T opportunities for all team sizes are listed below:

What D&T opportunities are there?

Design of new car
At any point before the first race of the next season, you may begin developing your new car. Once the first race of the next season begins, this new car becomes your current car, and the cycle repeats. Utilise this D&T opportunity over-and-over to improve the final quality of your new car; the more times you do it, the better you car for next year will be. For next year's car, you need not mention, nor cannot focus on, specific areas - it is a randomised process.

Development of current car
You may choose an area of focus for testing and development of your current car, which will result in an appropriate improvement. Possible directions of current car development:
  • Increase downforce
  • Reduce drag
  • Increase mechanical grip
  • Reduce weight
  • Increase reliability

Development of works and semi-works engine
This opportunity is only available to teams with works or semi-works engine deals. Performing this D&T opportunity will improve your engine in the direction of development specified for the engine; the direction of each engine's development can be found at the start of the thread. Works teams are free to change the direction of their engine's development any time they like; semi-works teams have no say in the direction of development of their engine.

Development of tyre specification
This opportunity is only available to teams with works or semi-works tyre deals. Performing this D&T opportunity will improve either your supplier's dry, or wet, tyre specification; whether the dry or wet spec is improved is dependant on the weather of the test session, which is entirely random. Specification data on tyres with development opportunities are available at the start of the thread.

Driver development
Nominate one of your drivers to undergo an intensive session with a driver trainer, working on their psychology and fitness, with a detailed analysis of their driving technique, style and habits in the cockpit, to look for improvements. The result will be a small, permanent improvement in your driver's performance.

Driver shoot-out
Select up-to six drivers, either from your team or unsigned on the market, and have them complete a test day in your identically-prepared car(s). You will receive the lap time results from the session, to aid comparison of their skills.

Team expansion – from one car to two cars, or from two cars to three cars
Currently, one, two and three-car teams are legal. If you are a one-car team who wish to begin entering two cars per race, or a two-car team who wish to begin entering three cars per race, this D&T opportunity is a prerequisite. The time and cost is used for preparation, and the acquisition of required parts, equipment, logistics, etc. for the additional car. Attempting to enter an additional car into a race without first utilising this D&T opportunity will result in Mr Ecclestone personally standing in front of your car with his arms folded, preventing it from leaving its pit garage.

Team contraction - from three cars to two cars, or from two cars to one car
If you wish to reduce the size of your entry, use this D&T opportunity to do so. The cost of the D&T opportunity is waived entirely, offering no timing advantage or disadvantage. You will be credited an amount composited from the value of your current car; the surplus car and its running gear is auctioned and/or liquidated off. For reference, below are two examples of the estimated income a team would be provided with, upon contracting the size of their team:

  • Chassis specification of 20% Downforce, 80% Drag, 20% Mechanical Grip, 590kg Weight (significantly overweight), 20% Reliability = credit of £810,000.
  • Chassis specification of 80% Downforce, 20% Drag, 80% Mechanical Grip, 540kg Weight (minimum legal weight), 80% Reliability = credit of £3,260,000.

Contracting your team will never result in a team losing money on the deal, regardless of how poor or outdated your current car may be.

Re-use of Previous Season's Chassis
Re-use of your 1985 car is legal for 1986.

Using a legacy chassis will result in an automatic halving of its performance ratings (with the exception of weight), and performance improvability. For example:

VeryGoodExampleChassis:

Code: Select all

Downforce: 71%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 36%, which can be improved to 50%.
Drag: 49%, which can be improved to 0% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 98%, which can be improved to 50%.
Mechanical Grip: 95%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 48%, which can be improved to 50%.
Weight: 548kg, which can be improved to the minimum legal weight limit (of 540kg) > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 548kg (unchanged), which can be improved to 544kg (half of the maximum potential weight reduction).
Reliability: 66%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 33%, which can be improved to 50%.
If the above car were to be re-used (without any further development) in 1987, it would look like this:

Code: Select all

Downforce: 36%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 18%, which can be improved to 25%.
Drag: 98%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 196%, which can be improved to 75%.
Mechanical Grip: 48%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 24%, which can be improved to 25%.
Weight: 548kg, which can be improved to 544kg > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 548kg (unchanged), which can be improved to 546kg (half of the maximum potential weight reduction from the previous season).
Reliability: 33%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 17%, which can be improved to 25%.

NotVeryGoodExampleChassis:

Code: Select all

Downforce: 34%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 17%, which can be improved to 50%.
Drag: 80%, which can be improved to 0% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 160%, which can be improved to 50%.
Mechanical Grip: 19%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 10%, which can be improved to 50%.
Weight: 588kg, which can be improved to the minimum legal weight limit (of 540kg) > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 588kg (unchanged), which can be improved to 564kg (half of the maximum potential weight reduction).
Reliability: 26%, which can be improved to 100% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 13%, which can be improved to 50%.
If the above car were to be re-used (without any further development) in 1987, it would look like this:

Code: Select all

Downforce: 17%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 9%, which can be improved to 25%.
Drag: 160%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 320%, which can be improved to 75%.
Mechanical Grip: 10%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 5%, which can be improved to 25%.
Weight: 588kg, which can be improved to 564kg > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 588kg (unchanged), which can be improved to 576kg (half of the maximum potential weight reduction from the previous season).
Reliability: 13%, which can be improved to 50% > [NEXT SEASON BECOMES] > 7%, which can be improved to 25%.

In the event that a legacy car is legally underweight, ballast will automatically be added in such a way that it has an entirely neutral effect on the chassis (other than its weight).

Note that values which exceed the normally-defined bounds (legacy chassis drag values can go over 100%, whereas a new chassis - no matter how under-developed - will never have more than 100% drag) will be adhered to, in terms of both on-track performance, and improvability.

Where division results in a floating-point number, this amount will be rounded-up to the nearest integer.

Tyre Development
Tyre development takes place by choosing to perform a 'develop tyre' D&T opportunity after a race. There is no direction of development to tyre R&D, as whether the dry compound, or wet compound, is developed during a test session is dependant on the weather, which is entirely random; therefore, developing your tyre specification is always a gamble as to whether you will develop the dry or wet compound.

Pirelli
Nationality: Italian
Dry Grip: 84%, Wet Grip: 62%
Works team(s): Minardi, Osella Squadra Corse Alfa - Note: Tyre D&T is free for Pirelli works teams, this season.
Semi-Works team(s): BMW, Ligier

Team Management
To get started, we'll need to assign managers to each team.

So, I'd like last season's manager of each team listed below to state here whether they wish to continue managing their team, or leave the position vacant for someone else to take over:
  • McLaren - FantometteBR
  • Brabham - Ice1Racing
  • Lotus - novitopoli
  • Ferrari - DemocalypseNow
  • Tyrrell - V8fan12
  • Alfa Romeo - peteroli34
  • BMW - RedEyes504
  • Williams - Collieafc
  • Arrows - This Could Be You
  • Osella - TheFlyingCaterham
  • Toleman - Dexter249
  • Spirit - tommykl
  • Ligier - This
  • Minardi - Aislabie
  • RAM - andrew
  • Zakspeed - CarloSpace
  • Lola - Reject_Dom

As the Zakspeed and Lola teams are new entries for 1985, the next two users in the queue have priority to begin managing these two teams; these users are: CarloSpace - who may pick which of these two teams he wishes to manage - and, Reject_Dom - who may manage the sole remaining team. Both these users have been contacted privately, to inform them of this.

I will like to pull out. I enjoyed the series, but I feel my choices were a bit short-sighted.

No worries, and cheers for the £3.5 million; Alfa have big plans for that money, now .

With Alfa Romeo newly-vacated, peteroli34- former team boss at Renault - is next in the queue to join the series. He's been contacted privately.

Remaining managers who's responses are required are FantometteBR, Ice1Racing, TheFlyingCaterham, Dexter249, andrew.

Thanks to all who have replied so far ;).

OK~, thanks everyone! Let's look forward to a great season!

Manufacturer Interest
As the 1984-85 silly season comes to a close, we have - for the first time - a manufacturer wishing to enter the sport by providing financial and/or engineering backing to an existing team, declining to enter by themselves.

Any independent teams whom meet the published requirements may state their desire to apply for manufacturer backing, simply by stating:

Code: Select all

DiscoBananaTeam would like to apply to be GenericManufacturer's B-team.
We only have one manufacturer with an interest in backing an existing team, this year, listed below:

Alfa Romeo Junior Team
Requirements: Must be at least a two-car team, and must be an Italian team.
Income for season: Estimated between £3,000,000 - £4,000,000
Other benefits: Guaranteed semi-works Alfa Romeo engines, of the same model as the works team.
Prerogative: Due to noticeable interest by several smaller, promising Italian teams at the New York Grand Prix last season, Alfa Romeo wish to take advantage of newly-found funds - in addition to the healthy quantity of Italian sponsorship money on offer this year - by investing in a ‘sister’ team. Note, that Alfa plans to rename the team 'Sviluppo Squadra Corse Alfa’.

Minardi wishes to take up the offer of becoming Alfa Romeo's junior team.

However, we would only do so on the condition of our team being called 'Minardi Squadra Alfa Romeo' as we believe that our history as a team is a vital part of what will make us successful this season. If this means a small reduction in our funding from Alfa Romeo, we understand and accept this.

You should rename it to Scuderia Quadrifoglio Verde. Please make it happen.

Osella will also try and go for the junior team deal with Alfa Romeo. I'd prefer for the name to be Osella Squadra Corse Alfa though, as I'd like to keep some of the identity of the team. Plus the fact that it shares initals with a reject constructor (although it wasn't imtentional).

And as I've previously stated, we did score more points than Minardi last year, and are more accustomed to running a two car team as well.

OK~, thanks people~!

Manufacturer Interest Results
The only two teams in a realistic position to take-up Alfa Romeo's offer of funding and engine promises will battle it out, now, to become the Italian marque's Formula One 'junior' team. There's no lack of enthusiasm on the part of either team - Osella, and Minardi.

Osella - 54% chance
Minardi - 45% chance
Osella gets it!

Congratulations~, Osella Squadra Corse Alfa (Osella Alfa Racing Team)!

Manufacturer Support
As with last season, I'd like to make it clear to those that manage manufacturer-backed teams with matching works engines (Ferrari and BMW), that I will not 'bound' you to those engines. However, for those managers, failing to choose the matching works engine deal for your team will result in your manufacturer stripping you of the budget they provide you with each season, the loss of the manufacturer's name as your team name, as well as other possible (likely political) ramifications down the line.

For independent teams that build in-house engines (Alfa Romeo and Zakspeed), choosing not to use your own engine will simply result in your engine's development programme slowing or ceasing.

Teams which are supported by a manufacturer will receive financial support in the form of additional income from their parent company. These sums are non-negotiable, and are subject to change each season. I have added these to your remaining budgets at the start of the thread.

Some (or, in this case, all) parent manufacturers do not permit signing of a team (or, failing that, a supplementary) sponsor. This is due to the manufacturer competing in the sport for the purpose of advertising themselves, thus wishing to take up the prime sponsorship locations on the car, and feeling their financial contribution to the team is sufficient compensation.

Ferrari
Income for season: £19,750,000
Constraints: May not sign a team sponsor.
Note: this income has been modified by the following factor(s):
  • Positive - the team expanded to three cars, and signed driver Didier Pironi, as requested by the team's superiors.
BMW
Income for season: £15,100,000
Constraints: May not sign a team sponsor.

Osella Squadra Corse Alfa
Income for season: £3,500,000*
Constraints: Must sign one-less supplementary sponsor.
Note: Alfa Romeo will be using their small portion of livery space on the car to advertise their government-backed owners - 'Finmeccanica' - rather than themselves.

I'll just let you lucky three teams bask in your new-found wealth for a day or so, before we hit the driver market :rockinoutdotgif:.

*The three-million Alfa are paying their junior team is totally not the same three-million that the works team paid to the manufacturer at the end of last year.

All right~, that's enough basking from the works teams. Let's get interactive~!

Driver Signing – Set One (Of Two)
It's with great sadness that I must inform you all that Niki Lauda - who drove for the now-defunct Renault team last season - has decided to retire from active competition. @Niki, we all miss you, and hope you'll be watching the Grand Prix on TV, and to see you in the Formula One paddock again, soon.

For those new to this series, who haven't read through last season's driver signing process, this virtual series uses two phases of signing drivers, sponsors, and engines. This is to add a degree of uncertainty~!

This is the first of two sets of drivers available on the market. The second set is of identical size. You are not required to sign any drivers at this stage. You may fill none, some, or all of your driver vacancies, if you wish.

To attempt signing of a driver, simply state the driver's name. The salary or sponsorship is what it is; there is no element of negotiation to contract signing, here.

An example of signing drivers:

Code: Select all

Doggett Road Racing would like to sign the following drivers:
Maxwell Confait
Douglas Franklin
Paul Pooley

This virtual series does not feature the concept of 'team orders' (i.e. Driver 1 and Driver 2). Nonetheless, if you wish to state which cars you intend to place your drivers in, feel free to do so, like this:

Code: Select all

S.D.T. Shoe Repair Racing would like to sign the following drivers:
Car 1:
Ahmet Salih
Colin Lattimore

Car 2:
Ronnie Leighton
William 'John' Goode

Below is a categorised list of drivers active on the open-wheel scene. By far the majority of these drivers have the capability to handle a Formula One car at racing speed, but a few of the younger and/or less experienced drivers may struggle.

Pay drivers are indicated by red font, and brackets surrounding their salaries.

You are not permitted to approach any drivers not listed below, in this first phase, as those drivers will appear in the second phase of driver signing!

A quick overview of the number of seats each team needs to fill:

Ferrari
… has three seats to fill.

McLaren
Brabham
Lotus
Tyrrell
Alfa Romeo
BMW
Williams
Arrows
Osella Squadra Corse Alfa
Toleman
Ligier
Minardi
... all have two seats to fill.

Spirit
RAM
Zakspeed
Lola
… all have one seat to fill.

When I receive a wishlist of drivers to sign - or a statement indicating they do not wish to sign any drivers at this stage - from every team, I will post the results. Have fun!

1. Rosberg
2. *Wait*
3. *Wait*

Driver 2:
1. Bellof
2. Winklehock
3. *Wait*

As you can see, we are working on the ideas that A) we will get decent (or any..) sponsors first-time round this time B) we can get a semi-works BMW deal and C) that one of the Italian teams is going to poach Nannini.
