The quest for Jody Scheckter's team-mate for 1978 will be a public one, in a shootout form, as two young drivers are given the chance to compete with Patrick Depailler for the Frenchman's seat.

Elio de Angelis, who has impressed in Italian Formula 3 this season along with appearances in non-championship races for Ferrari, will take reins of the second horse in the Ferrari stable at Monza.

A home debut with lots of pressure, it presents a very public demonstration of what he can potentially do, though he at least has the benefit of multiple races in the 312T at this point.

One race later in Montreal will come the Formula 1 championship return of the native Gilles Villeneuve, who debuted last year with the Kojima team to finish 11th at Fuji.

He was set for a podium until a breakdown on the final lap in the Trofeo Dino Ferrari at the wheel of a 312T, and will need to use home advantage to show why he deserves a full-time drive with La Scuderia.

The incumbent Patrick Depailler will return to the cockpit for USA and Japan, where the season ends, so must use the next four races to show why these two young guns are not worth taking a risk for.

1977 British Grand Prix - Pre-Qualifying

1) Martini-Renault 2:40.630
2) Lola-Ford 2:41.977
3) March-Ford 2:43.239 (Everest)
4) Shadow-Alfa Romeo 2:43.248
5) March-Ford 2:43.296 (Iberia)
6) March-Ford 2:43.300 (British F1 Team)
7) Penske-Ford 2:43.674
8) LEC-Ford 2:44.110
9) Hesketh-Ford 2:44.276
10) Lola-Ford 2:48.49 (North Star)
11) McGuire-Ford 2:52.278
12) March-Renzo 2:52.751
13) Dywa-Renzo 2:53.507
14) Wheatcroft-Renzo 3:07.216

You'd have rubbish odds to back Renault to win this session, and with good reason. Still, that didn't stop Jabouille from attempting to make things interesting, setting a time 1.5 seconds slower than his team-mate. ATS too didnt occuppy 3rd and 4th, indeed, the entire top 12 apart from Jarier and Stommelen was incredibly close. Ultimately, thanks to great laps from Ghinzani and Marazzi, Everest progress by just 0.009 - those upgrades working well. Robert Kagan impresses in the Penthouse British F1 Team entered March, but ultimately South isn't quite fast enough. Further back, LEC disappoint, Iberia miss out by just a few tenths, and Pescarolo scuppers the Penske ship.

At the back, North Star are rubbish as always, B&S are no faster than usual, Zorzi sets the 20th fastest time, and the McGuires at least beat the Wheatcrofts. Or should I say the Michael Tyrrell Wheatcrofts, the conspicuous Antiguan having bought the team after the French Grand Prix, apparently all in cash too. Tyrrell himself replaces Gimax, and manages to be even slower.

Consequently, the teams that failed to Pre-Qualify will compete for the inaugural Tony Brise Trophy, along with first and second reserves Apollon and F&S Properties.

Ret) Alex Ribeiro - 4/10 - Better than the majority of his outings this year.
Ret) Ian Ashley - -1/10 - If this drive was a Top Gear presenter, it'd be that bloke from Season 1 no-one remembers.

Autosport wrote:Tyrrell ends contract with Héctor Rebaque, names replacement

Despite a decent showing in Silverstone which ended up in smoke, Tyrrell has decided to end the contract with 21-year-old Mexican pay-driver Héctor Rebaque, with the reasoning being "due to inadequate results". Despite lack of reliability hindering the Tyrrell team, lead driver Didier Pironi has managed to score two points in ten races.

On the other hand, Rebaque has been very average; with his best finish of tenth in South Africa early in the season. Rebaque has been criticised for "silly mistakes" - culminating in a pitlane collision at Mugello, which caught up the championship leader Mario Andretti.

British driver Robert Kagan, fresh off his victory at the Tony Brise Memorial Trophy at Silverstone, has been named as his replacement in the #4 car - from the Dutch Grand Prix and effective for the rest of 1977.

Fastest Lap: Patrick Depailler - 1:20.246
Drive of the Race: James Hunt - Stunning maiden victory for Brabham, didn't put a foot wrong
Reject of the Race: Reliability - Only 7 cars made the flag.

Ratings
1) James Hunt - 10/10 - Gelled with the upgraded Brabham in qualifying, drove a good race to be challenging Scheckter for the lead before his retirement.
2) Patrick Tambay - 7/10 - Was on track for a minor points finish before the retirments kicked in.
3) Tom Sneva - 7/10 - Was leapfrogged by the Ensigns at the start of the race, and struggled to overcome the horsepower differences.
4†) Mario Andretti - 6/10 - Was on course for a third, which became second when Depailler retired - but then engine failure for Mario meant he'd have to settle for a classified 4th.
5) Ronnie Peterson - 8/10 - Drove the car by the scruff of it's neck, was elevated into points by attrition
6) Gunnar Nilsson - 7/10 - Drove well, but not as well as Peterson
7) Didier Pironi - 5/10 - Struggled with damage and mechanical issues all race, last bar one of the cars to reach the flag.
8) Piercarlo Ghinzani - 9/10 - Nursed the fragile March to the flag, even though helped by attrition 8th is a phenomenal result for the Everest team.
9†) Jacques Laffite - 4/10 - Was running 17th on merit at one stage. Dreadful outing.
10†) Patrick Depailler - 6/10 - Didnt have anything to match Hunt or Scheckter.
11†) Carlos Reutemann - 7/10 - Starting to drive like the second half of 1976.
Ret) Alan Jones - 7/10 - Cruelly robbed of points.
Ret) Hector Rebaque - 4/10 - Didn't do anything to make Ken Tyrrell change his mind.
Ret) Thomas Nurmester - 6/10 - Decent enough showing on home ground.
Ret) Jean-Pirre Jarier - 5/10 - Typical Renault far; runs lower midfield then retires.
Ret) Clay Regazzoni - 9/10 - In all the chaos, would've finished second.
Ret) Francois Migualt - 5/10 - More like Francois Meh-gault
Ret) Jody Scheckter - 9/10 - Would've won, had Hunt more or less covered.
Ret) Jean-Pierre Jabouille - 4/10 - See Jarier.
Ret) Rolf Stommelen - 5/10 - Did all he could
Ret) Jacky Ickx - 3/10 - Was grateful for early retirement so he could continue reading Sportscar Monthly
Ret) Emerson Fittipaldi - 2/10 - Here's some advice: Retire.
Ret) Mikko Kozarowitsky - 3/10 - Showed up by Stommelen.
Ret) Gianfranco Brancatelli - 0/10 - Rookie mistake to run wide at Chapel and into the path of Brambilla
Ret) Vittorio Brambilla - 5/10 - Had nowhere to go
Ret) Tom Pryce - 5/10 - Had no time to avoid Fittipaldi at the start, was a passenger from there out
DNQ) Freddy Kottulinsky - -1/10 - Boro may as well be a one car team.
DNQ) Roberto Marazzi - 6/10 - Didnt have the pace needed to make the grid.
DNPQ) John Watson - 9/10 - Getting as much out of the woeful car as he possibly can.
DNPQ) Bertram Schafer - 9/10 - Considering a job as a postman, as he constantly delivers.
DNPQ) Gabriel Chateau - 9/10 - Brilliant lap to go 8 tenths faster than de Villtoa
DNPQ) Robert Kagan - 8/10 - May not have Pre-Qualified, but his performance in the Tony Brise Trophy has landed him a drive with Tyrrell.
DNPQ) Leonhard von Gottorp - 5/10 - Wished he was back in that McLaren
DNPQ) Bruno Giacomelli - 2/10 - Lacklustre performance when it mattered for LEC.
DNPQ) Stephen South - 7/10 - Decent enough
DNPQ) Emilio di Villota - 6/10 - Held Iberia back. Like Quicksand.
DNPQ) Alex Ribeiro - 4/10 - How does he even still have a drive?
DNPQ) Riccardo Patrese - 4/10 - Not good enough at LEC's home event
DNPQ) Henri Pescarolo - 3/10 - If this drive was lager, it'd be Tesco Basics.
DNPQ) Harald Ertl - 2/10 - Embarassing
DNPQ) William Ferguson - 1/10 - North Star? More like brown dwarf.
DNPQ) Renzo Zorzi - 6/10 - Continues to risk his life in the Dywa.
DNPQ) Brian McGuire - 2/10 - Home-built car had all the speed and svelte handling of a Lada.
DNPQ) Divina Galica - 0/10 - Will pretend she never even showed up.
DNPQ) Valentino Musetti - 1/10 - Dreadful
DNPQ) Ian Ashley - -1/10 - A literal pile of ash could've gone faster in the breeze
DNPQ) Alberto Colombo - -2/10 - Like Christopher Colombus, is known for his discoveries. Like discovering how to be so mind-bogglingly slow.
DNPQ) Michael Tyrrell - -3/10 - Suspicious. The drive, however, was just shite
DNPQ) Otto Stuppacher - -100000/10 - At least he's having fun.

From the budget spreadsheet it looks like we earn no prize money from the Tony Brise Trophy? If that's correct, unless Brian Henton (who was presumably so anonymous he didn't get a rating?) is the Messiah and can hence drag us onto the grid I don't think we can afford any upgrades even by the end of the year, let alone make it into 1978.

It should be updated now, I'd forgotten to copy the updated numbers to the online spreadsheet. Hesketh have at current £69,705.92.

In that case we'll buy an Alpha chassis upgrade, so that von Gottorp and Henton at least have (more of) a fighting chance.

A statement by Williams Racing wrote:During the Dutch Grand Prix, our driver Alan Jones was involved in a serious accident also involving Emerson Fittipaldi and Patrick Tambay.

Due to a mechanical problem, Jones had to slow down on the main straight, Emerson Fittipaldi had no time to react and impacted the rear of Jones' car, which then veered across the track where it was collected by Tambay's Brabham. Jones' car made a third impact when it hit the pit wall.

Alan underwent surgery for several fractured bones on Sunday evening. He is awake and in a stable, non-serious condition, and expected to make a full recovery.

We at Williams Racing wish all drivers involved in the incident a quick recovery.

1) Martini-Renault 2:45.613
2) Lola-Ford 2:47.597 (ATS)
3) March-Ford 2:49.166 (Everest)
4) LEC-Ford 2:49.325
5) Shadow-Alfa Romeo 2:49.482
6) Hesketh-Ford 2:49.601
7) March-Ford 2:50.237 (Iberia)
8) Penske-Ford 2:51.009
9) Lola-Ford 2:57.942 (F&S)
10) March-Renzo 2:58.493
11) Dywa-Renzo 3:02.003

It's another tight battle for the third spot in main qualifying. Kozarowitsky made TS a bit more nervous than usual, but the real surprise of the session was Ghinzani's phenomenal lap to take 4th for Everest - sending the Italian squad into qualifying proper for the second time in succession. LEC will be utterly disappointed to miss out after a strong performance, Hesketh were neither here nor there, and Penske couldn't get the car working around the sand dunes. At the back of the field, it was business as usual - Dywa and B&S slowest of the lot, with F&S Properties' outdated Lolas consigning Hayje and van Lennep to join them.

Lap Chart

Fastest Lap: Mario Andretti - 1:22.322
Drive of the Race: Clay Regazzoni - Phenomenal pace in the Williams led to a second place on merit.
Reject of the Race: Mikko Kozarowitsky - seems to have forgotten about a little thing called mirrors.

Ratings
1) Patrick Depailler - 9/10 - Despite dealing with the complete suprise that was his car making the distance, droe a strong race to fend off Regazzoni and Andretti for the victory.
2) Clay Regazzoni - 10/10 - Fell back at the start of the race, but rallied around the one stop strategy and impressive pace to claim second position, just fending off Andretti at the end.
3) Mario Andretti - 8/10 - Cannot fault his driving, but the three stop strategy gamble didn't quite play off for him.
4) Carlos Reutemann - 7/10 - Pretty anonymous race
5) Jacques Laffite - 7/10 - Decent performance to claim much-needed points for Ligier
6) Gunnar Nilsson - 5/10 - Damaged Peterson's rear wing at the start, then drove an anonymous race. Benefitted from retirements to claim a point.
7) Robert Kagan - 8/10 - Didn't put a foot wrong all day, clean and tidy.
8) Jean-Pierre Jarier - 6/10 - A Renault finished? Well, paint me red, call me Irvine, and watch me job out to Schumacher.
9) Tom Pryce - 5/10 - Anonymity.
10) Ronnie Peterson - 6/10 - Fought hard, but not much he could do after early race rear wing replacement
11) Francois Migault - 5/10 - Could've done better.
12) Vittorio Brambilla - 4/10 - Just slow.
13) Roberto Marazzi - 6/10 - Did well to reach to finish
14) Mikko Kozarowitsky - 0/10 - Moved over on Sneva, sending him flying into the gravel.
Ret) Patrick Tambay - 7/10 - Was on course for 4th before Jones' car slid across the track.
Ret) Emerson Fittipaldi - 9/10 - Best race of the season before slamming into the rear of Jones' failed car
Ret) Alan Jones - 6/10 - Suffered transmission issues all day before it failed on the pit straight and being involved in the accident.
Ret) Jacy Ickx - 3/10 - Never planned to finish the race as he still had an article to read in Endurance Weekly magazine
Ret) Jody Scheckter - 6/10 - Held off Depailler at the start, but after pitstop was mediocre
Ret) Rolf Stommelen - 5/10 - Did all he could
Ret) Didier Pironi - 7/10 - Great start to get up to 8th; fell like a stone after 5 laps and then retired.
Ret) Jean-Pierre Jabouille - 5/10 - One Renault conveying at least a semblance of normality
Ret) James Hunt - 7/10 - Disappointing for the British GP winner to be taken out by transmission failure
Ret) Thomas Nurmester - 7/10 - Bad start, was making up for it when the engine failed.
Ret) Piercarlo Ghinzani - 4/10 - Everest still chase that elusive first double finish.
Ret) Tom Sneva - 7/10 - Was battling at the front when Kozarowitsky moved over, and was a passenger there on out.
DNQ) Gianfranco Brancatelli - 2/10 - Has forgotten he's no longer in a Boro.
DNQ) Freddy Kottulinsky - 0/10 - Another race, another DNQ.
DNPQ) John Watson - 5/10 - Another race, another DNPQ
DNPQ) Riccardo Patrese - 7/10 - So close
DNPQ) Leonhard von Gottorp - 6/10 - The car just isn't fast enough
DNPQ) Brian Henton - 6/10 - Much better than Silverstone
DNPQ) Bruno Giacomelli - 3/10 - If this drive was Michael Jackson album, it'd be Invincible
DNPQ) Bertram Schafer - 5/10 - Couldn't get the car working.
DNPQ) Emilio di Villota - 3/10 - Just poor
DNPQ) Gabriel Chateau - 5/10 - Unable to get a clean lap in
DNPQ) Alex Riberio - 2/10 - Awful
DNPQ) Henri Pescarolo - 3/10 - Also struggled with the car
DNPQ) Boy Hayje - 2/10 - Boy, he was slow.
DNPQ) Conny Andersson - 1/10 - Returning to B&S was the first mistake. Expecting to qualify was the second.
DNPQ) Renzo Zorzi - 6/10 - 2 tenths off the fastest Renzo car.
DNPQ) Divina Galica - 2/10 - Is tarnishing her name
DNPQ) Gijs van Lennep - 1/10 - Should've lennep be.
DNPQ) Alberto Colombo - -2/10 - If this lap was an independence referendum, it'd be the Catalonian one.

Harvey Jones appreciates the offer from Shadow but would ideally favour a seat at a more competitive team. He's available for both Williams and Fittipaldi in light of the injuries to Emerson and Alan Jones.

Jean-Pierre Jarier has been confirmed at an inside source to be at loan at the British based Brazilian team Fittipaldi,
with the hopes of finding someone else to fill in to do it for 1978.

"We are very pleased to have Jarier onboard, he is a very experience driver that will help us a lot regarding the issues of the car."

Angelina Sokoloff, hasn't been seen in the Soviet Union since the Soviet Grand Prix. Many have been rumoured that she has in fact defected to West Germany, following a motorsport trip.

Shortly after the Soviet Grand Prix, Sokoloff continued with her part-time European F2 schedule, this time at Nogaro. After the race, where she finished 4th, Sokoloff didn't report back. It's rumoured that she instead took a trip accross France to West Germany, where she safely defected.

Nothing has been confirmed yet though, so we will have to wait and see.

Renault and LEC Refrigeration have reached a new deal, shortly after the loan of Jean-Pierre Jarier at Fittipaldi.
Renault will have Patrese for the rest of the season. In his place, a new driver has arrived from Germany, going by "Anne Schröder". Not too much is known about her, but it is rumoured that she has an incredible wealth of experience and sucess on lower formulae and local sportscars in West Germany, which will definitely play on LEC's favour.

1977 German Grand Prix - Pre-Qualifying

1) Martini-Renault 3:54.75
2) LEC-Ford 3:57.356
3) March-Ford 3:57.633 (Iberia)
4) March-Ford 3:58.807 (Everest)
5) Lola-Ford 3:59.015 (ATS)
6) Penske-Ford 4:00.016
7) Hesketh-Ford 4:00.189
8) Shadow-Alfa Romeo 4:02.302
9) March-Ford 4:03.15 (Merzario)
10) Lola-Ford 4:08.216 (F&S)
11) Dywa-Renzo 4:15.241

Riccardo Patrese confirms why he is a talent of the future by setting the fastest lap in pre-qualifying by over 1.6 seconds, and 1.8 seconds faster than his team-mate. Behind him, Bruno Giacomelli sets the second fastest time, with Anne Schroder also impressing on her debut to put LEC second on combined times and into Qualifying proper. Rolf Stommelen again delivers, but Mikko Kozarowitsky is no-where, leaving ATS to fail to pre-qualify for the first time in 1977 - in their place, Iberia make it through.

Further down, Bertram Schafer and Leonhard von Gottorp both set laptimes at the top of their machinery's abilities, but neither car had the pace to advance. Shadow struggle with the balance of their car and also slump to a disheartening DNQ, Tom Belso and Merzario can't do enough to go through, F&S never really threatened anybody, and Dywa - being the sole remaining Renzo runner - are at the bottom of the timesheets.

Avon Racing potentially ruling out the 1978 entry

After a 2 year running as a privateer team from USA, Avon confirms that they're ruling out 1978 entry as it's looking to close the curtains after the end of the 1977 season.

Avon has yet to announce the second driver at Round 16, while Warwick Brown could leave the team after Round 15 meaning that Javier Garcia is yet to have a teammate in Round 16. It will be announced after the Canada GP.

Fastest Lap: Jody Scheckter - 1:58.221
Drive of the Race: Jody Scheckter - Dominated the race
Reject of the Race: Patrick Depailler & Tom Sneva - Two silly moves that robbed both of them of their races.

Ratings
1) Jody Scheckter - 10/10 - Simply the best
2) James Hunt - 8/10 - Drove well to get himself into the second place and fend off Regazzoni and Reutemann, but didn't have the pace to challenge Scheckter.
3) Carlos Reutemann - 7/10 - Another bad start, but recovered well
4) Clay Regazzoni - 8/10 - Was on course for third, but Reutemann had the advantage in the second stint.
5) Thomas Nurmester - 9/10 - Received damage in the first lap melee when Depailler shut the door, and was sent to the very back. Brilliant recovery drive.
6) Hans Heyer - 6/10 - Clearly showed a lack of familiarity with the car, but a commendable performance nonetheless
7) Jean-Pierre Jarier - 7/10 - Felt right at home in the Fittipaldi, ran in the points for much of the race. 7th moves Fittipaldi ahead of March in the WCC standings.
8) Ronnie Peterson - 5/10 - Ran well at the start of the race, but dropped back after the pitstops
9) Robert Kagan - 7/10 - Two top 10 finishes in your first two starts is not something to be sniffed at
10) Francois Migault - 5/10 - Gained places to be behind his team-mate at the start, then slowly drifted back
11) Jacky Ickx - 4/10 - Anonymous
12) Gianfranco Brancatelli - 3/10 - Continues to be made a mockery of by Pryce
13) Freddy Kottulinsky - 1/10 - No, I don't believe he finished a race either
14) Bruno Giacomelli - 5/10 - Taking LEC's second finish is respectable, albeit 3 laps down
Ret) Vittorio Brambilla - 0/10 - Minus 4 points for parking it there
Ret) Didier Pironi - 8/10 - Has a long career ahead of him. Unfortunately, his engines are about as long-lived as Felipe Massa's world championship
Ret) Jean-Pierre Jabouille - 5/10 - Predictable retirement.
Ret) Riccardo Patrese - 7/10 - Drove spectacularly well on his Renault debut. Unfortunately couldn't avoid Jabouille's oil slick, and found himself in the barriers faster than Vettel's title hopes vanished.
Ret) Tom Pryce - 5/10 - Blameless Tom Pryce is blameless
Ret) Jacques Laffite - 3/10 - Was on track for 4th. Minus 3 points for loosing the car all by himself at Opel.
Ret) Mario Andretti - 4/10 - Nowhere this weekend. Went far too deep up the inside of Jabouille at the Ostkurve, briefly going on two wheels before coming back down to Earth and out of the race.
Ret) Tom Sneva - 2/10 - Was involved in the first lap melee. Might've had a strong recovery drive, if he didn't throw the car off the road at the exact same place as Reutemann last year. Oh dear.
Ret) Anne Schroder - 5/10 - Somehow got caught up in the Depailler / de Angelis / Nilsson incident.
Ret) Gunnar Nilsson - 5/10 - Moved to avoid the Depailler / de Angelis incident, and ended up lodged in Sneva's sidepod. Front right wheel was damaged beyond all hope and his race was over.
Ret) Elio de Angelis - 5/10 - Williams debut ended far too early. Luckily, he managed to slam on the brakes before colliding head-on with Depailler's car, and in the process ensuring both drivers escaped serious injury.
Ret) Patrick Depailler - 0/10 - Already down to second place, Depailler thought it wise to shut the door on Thomas Nurmester as he stuck his nose down the inside at the Ostkurve. Hint: it was not wise.
DNQ) Gabriel Chateau - 5/10 - Gutted to miss out on first start
DNQ) Emilio di Villota - 5/10 - Double DNQ for Iberia must be hurting.
DNPQ) Rolf Stommelen - 7/10 - Let down by Kozarowitsky again.
DNPQ) Piercarlo Ghinzani - 6/10 - Another brilliant lap
DNPQ) Leonhard von Gottorp - 6/10 - Try as he may, the Hesketh refuses to go faster
DNPQ) Bertram Schafer - 5/10 - Could do nothing more in the car
DNPQ) John Watson - 1/10 - Threw any chance of Shadow pre-qualifying down the drain, on a track considered to be a shoe-in for them
DNPQ) Roberto Marazzi - 3/10 - Lap wasnt good enough to see Everest pre-qualify for a third time in a row.
DNPQ) Henri Pescarolo - 2/10 - Being made a fool of by Schafer
DNPQ) Tom Belso - 4/10 - Nothing was expected of Merzario. Nothing was delivered.
DNPQ) Brian Henton - 2/10 - Not doing his career prospects any good
DNPQ) Mikko Kozarowitsky - -1/10 - ATS fail to pre-qualify, and Mikko Kozarowitsky fails to have an F1 career.
DNPQ) Arturo Merzario - 1/10 - At least Belso put in a half-decent time
DNPQ) Alex Riberio - 0/10 - See my comment for the last 11 races
DNPQ) Gijs van Lennep - 2/10 - Car withheld his talent
DNPQ) Boy Hayje - 1/10 - Can return to the Netherlands knowing that he's made 0 impact on the sport.
DNPQ) Renzo Zorzi - 6/10 - Zorzing (verb): Performing above limited expectations
DNPQ) Alberto Colombo - 3/10 - With Stuppacher gone, has moved into last position. I've heard he's even got a log fire going. Very cosy.

Larry Perkins rejects the drive, as he has begun to give up on securing a competitive Formula One drive. His Australian touring car commitments clash with the remaining schedule.

The Telegraph wrote:Tensions building at Ensign?

Formula One team Ensign Racing is on the verge of crisis, according to reports coming out of Italy today. It's rumoured that engine supplier Alfa Romeo is looking to expand their presence in Formula One in the form of a factory team by purchasing the team from team owner Morris Nunn. However, it's believed they have reached an impasse, as Nunn wants the team to remain largely British while Alfa Romeo want to move the majority of the squad to the Autodelta facility in Italy

This impasse has opened the potential that the relationship could fall apart altogether, despite the team's run of results in Europe. If it were to come to pass that Alfa Romeo would want a new factory team, the list of potential suitors would be quite long. Chief of which is rumoured to be Team Fittipaldi, as the Italian manufacturer are keen to work with two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi. Additionally, losing Alfa Romeo support could open a potential break clause in Ensign's star driver Ronnie Peterson's contract, leaving him open to sign with other teams for 1978.
