Motor Sport Magazine wrote:Hoshino to race for Boro in Japan

Boro has announced that Kazuyoshi Hoshino will drive the #33 Boro entry for the Japanese Grand Prix, replacing the ill Freddy Kottulinsky, who's suffering from a stomach flu and won't be able to recover in time for the final race of the season.

"We're very sorry to hear that Freddy got sick, the man could barelly walk when I saw him the other night. I imediatelly told him he won't race in that condition. He travelled to the track with us, but he won't race. We contacted some local drivers with track experience and Kazuyoshi was available to race. We are very happy to have him onboard."

Hoshino was even happier for making his Grand Prix debut: "It's a dream come true. Boro have a good car, and Freddy and Vittorio showed me how the car handled. It's a bit of a though car to turn, even though its nimble. But I know the tricks and I want to show them what I can do."

Mario on Gutierrez after the Italian Grand Prix wrote:He's no longer just a bit of a tool, he's the entire tool set.

Kunimitsu Takahashi to drive for March in Japan

Japanese Formula 2000 runner-up Kunimitsu Takahashi will drive the #10 March in the Japanese Grand Prix,
as a spokesperson from March Engineering confirmed.

"Gianfranco notified us he wouldn't be able to do make the trip to Japan due to personal reasons" the spokesperson said. "Hence, we decided to give a chance on the world stage to one of the local heros, and we hope he can reward us with a good result. Since this marks the end of Gianfranco's time with us, we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours"

Ribeiro released, Takahara to drive for Shadow in Japan
Alex Ribeiro has been released from his Shadow drive ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix after a disappointing season marred by qualifying problems. It is understood that team management were "at the end of their tether" with the Brazilian, and that teammate John Watson had pushed for Ribeiro to be sacked before the final round. 1976 Japanese Formula 2000 champion Noritake Takahara has been drafted by Shadow to drive the #17 at Fuji and the team is currently evaluating their driver options for next season.
Owner of the Peak Motorsport Group.

1977 Japanese Grand Prix - Pre-Qualifying

Post by pasta_maldonado »

Pre-Event
The Japanese officials have declared outrage by announcing Boro will have to compete in Pre-Q. The Dutch team protest, but it is made clear that if they do not compete in Pre-Q, they will be prohibited from racing in the event, and reluctantly they agree to Pre-Qualify. This has arisen thanks to Kojima's solitary point earning them 11th in the 1976 WCC, and the Japanese organisers coming to the conclusion that this exempts Kojima from Pre-Q.

Pre-Qualifying
Results
Image

1) Boro-Ford 2:36.837
2) Martini-Renault 2:37.338
3) Shadow-Alfa Romeo 2:39.990
4) Penske-Ford 2:41.315
5) Hesketh-Ford 2:41.353
6) March-Ford 2:42.945 (Mitsuoka)
7) Heros-Ford 2:45.871

Kazuyoshi Hoshino's track knowledge sees him set the fastest time by 3 tenths of a second with a mighty second sector nobody else could even get close to. A good lap from Brambilla sees Boro knock Renaut off the top of the Pre-Q timesheets, and Ribeiro's dismissal from Shadow sees them pre-qualify for the first time since the Soviet Grand Prix - although it may be too little, too late. Further back, Stephen South places himself firmly in the job market with a lap only 0.005s slower than Takahara's Shadow, Mitsuoka are disappointing, and the Heros chassis proves to still be a disaster. To add insult to injury, Hiroshi Takagi crashed shortly into the session, setting only a single lap.

Autosport wrote:Tyrrell keeps Kagan for 1978
Ken Tyrrell has announced before the Japanese Grand Prix that British rookie and last year's British Formula 3 champion Robert Kagan has signed a new contract with his team for 1978.

The 22-year-old has impressed earlier this year by winning the non-championship Tony Brise Memorial Trophy, fending off drivers from stronger teams to take the win. Kagan's best finish for Tyrrell to this date was a seventh place finish at his very first outing in Zandvoort.

Kagan will stay in the #4 car for next year, while his teammate is yet to be announced at a later date.
