As edited in the earlier post, Hesketh have revised our second seat offer to offer it to young British talent Stephen South considering his impressive British F3 form this year.

Bournemouth Echo wrote:Team Penske On Way Out?
It can be revealed that Poole-based Grand Prix outfit Team Penske is reportedly heading towards the exit door in Formula One.
Sources within the American-registered squad have revealed that team owner Roger Penske is becoming tired of the European racing scene and is open to a buyout or merger with another team, perhaps before the end of the 1977 season. It is believed that Penske officials have met with representatives from ATS and Interscope Racing as well as former Williams owner Walter Wolf.

When contacted by the Echo, Team Penske declined to comment.

Fastest Lap: Tom Sneva - 1:10.557
Drive of the Race: Gilles Villeneuve - Dragging every little bit of the Kojima and more, was challenging the Renaults despite the power deficit.
Reject of the Race: Patrick Depailler - Ferrari had the horseower to take victory today, but pace was lacking. de Angelis cannot be faulted as it was his first race outing in the car, but Depailler has nowhere to hide from a distant fourth and a shocker of a weekend.

Lap Charts

Ratings (shamelessly stolen from Normal32)
1) Tom Sneva - 9 - Not a foot wrong today.
2) Danny Ongais - 8 - Great debut for McLaren. Held onto to Sneva well.
3) Elio de Angelis - 7 - Didn't have a race-long challenge to the McLarens, but bettered Depailler.
4) Patrick Depailler - 4 - A lost postman. Failed to deliver.
5) Gilles Villeneuve - 10 - Two Formula One outings, two impressive results. A full-time drive beckons.
6) John Watson - 7 - Frustration with the lacklustre Shadow was evident.
7) Masahiro Hasemi - 6 - Nothing to really note.
8) Bertrand Schafer - 8 - Had no expectations. Exceeded all estimations.
9) Henri Pescarolo - 5 - Not bad, but not good.
10) Bruno Giacomelli - 7 - Drove well, unlucky to not finish higher.
11) Maurizio Flammini - 4 - Old equipment showed.
12†) Jean-Pierre Jabouille - 5 - A steady performance.

14) Pierre Dieudonne - 4 - Anonymous
15) Riccardo Patrese - 8 - Early race accident ruined competitive showing.
16) Valentino Musetti - 2 - Slow
17) Brian McGuire - 1 - Slower
NC) Otto Stuppacher - -10 - ????
Ret) Renzo Zorzi - 6 - Best Dywa performance of all time.
Ret) Brian Henton - 3 - Disappointing considering expectations.
Ret) Jean-Pierre Jarier - 5 - A solid performance
Ret) Alex Ribeiro - 1 - Singlehandedly sinking the Shadow ship.
Ret) Stephen South - 7 - Wait... so the Hesketh's not competitive?
Ret) Piercarlo Ghinzani - 4 - Should've done better.

Hesketh are impressed with South's highly competent performance in the 308D/77 (which appears to be getting worse race by race, and is seemingly hopelessly fragile also), and are willing to offer him a drive (if funds can be found) for the three rounds we have no second driver for; That is to say, Rounds 13, 16 and 17.

1977 Belgian Grand Prix - Pre-Qualifying

1) Martini-Renault 3:11.890
2) Lola-Ford 3:13.979 (ATS)
3) Shadow-Alfa Romeo 3:15.937
4) March-Ford 3:16.148 (Everest)
5) Penske-Ford 3:16.481
6) Hesketh-Ford 3:16.559
7) March-Ford 3:17.050 (Vaillant)
8) Lola-Ford 3:24.832 (North Star)
9) March-Renzo 3:26.042
10) Dywa-Renzo 3:29.963
11) Wheatcroft-Renzo 3:37.277
NC) March-Ford No time (Iberia)

No surprises at the top of both the individual and combined times, but behind, there was much entertainment throughout the whole of the Pre-Q pack. John Watson excelled in the Shadow to post the 4th best time, and was almost held back by Alex Riberio - who was slower than Gimax, who set the first remotely competitive lap in the Wheatcroft all season. However, Watson's time proved fast enough for Shadow to feature in their first qualifying session since Long Beach. Pierre Dieudonne set the 6th fastest lap for the debutant Michel Vaillant team, but team-mate Herve Regout disappointed; and it was much the same story for Hesekth and Penske, with Brett Lunger suddenly finding some pace with rumours of his replacement by Bertram Schafer circulating. Everest were unlucky to miss out on qualifying by such a small margin, and Iberia will rue a lost opportunity, as mechanical problems prevented a fast-looking di Villota from setting a time.

Towards the bottom of the timesheets, North Star and B&S were again useless, and despite the brilliant lap from Gimax Wheatcroft ended up over 25 seconds adrift on combined times thanks to the efforts of Stuppacher, who has all the speed of bitumen. Dywa were also in their usual position, but it must be noted that Renzo Zorzi was closer to the B&S of Kessel than has previously been the case. Reckless speed from the Italian in a car rumoured to be held together by nothing but duct tape and hope.

Penske offers Bertram Schäfer the chance to drive the remainder of the season with Penske as a pay driver from the French GP onwards. Lunger's two remaining contracted races will be the US and Canadian GP, should Schäfer accept.

Penske also intend to extend Pescarolo's contract to the end of the year.

Fastest Lap: Mario Andretti - 1:34.945
Drive of the Race: Mario Andretti - Dominating performance from the likeable American. Really showed the pace of the Lotus.
Reject of the Race: Patrick Tambay - Managed to re-inherit 5th after retirements, but it shan't be forgotten that he almost threw it all away with a lazy spin.

Ratings (shamelessly stolen from Normal32)
1) Mario Andretti - 10/10 - Flawless
2) Carlos Reutemann - 7/10 - Somehow turned in a decent showing, and capitalised.
3) Jody Scheckter - 7/10 - Decent drive.
4) Tom Sneva - 6/10 - The Gas Man was running a little low today.
5) Patrick Tambay - 5/10 - Almost threw it all away

8) Gunnar Nilsson - 6/10 - Alfa power wasn't too effective around Monaco
9) Tom Pryce - 6/10 - Fairly anonymous drive
10) Vittorio Brambilla - 5/10 - Needs more for a second point
11) Francois Migault - 5/10 - Didn't have the pace of Emerson today
12) Jean-Pierre Jarier - 9/10 - Dragged the Renault kicking and screaming to the finish
13) Ronnie Peterson - 7/10 - Was unfortunate to be tagged by Regazzoni early in the race. Did all he could.
14) Gianfranco Brancatelli - 4/10 - Also did all he could, but it wasn't good enough
15) Jean-Pierre Jabouille - 8/10 - +4 points for getting it to the finish.
16) Hector Rebaque - 3/10 - Stuck behind slower cars for most of the race.
17) Mikko Kozarowtisky - 5/10 - Didn't drive badly.
18) Rolf Stommelen - 5/10 - Didn't drive badly.
Ret) Patrick Depailler - 7/10 - Could not challenge Andretti

Ret) Thomas Nurmester - 5/10 - Retired too early to make an impression
Ret) John Watson - 7/10 - Did brilliantly to get onto the grid.
Ret) Didier Pironi - 5/10 - Qulaifying performance gave hope. Reliability did not.
DNQ) Freddy Kotulinksy - 0/10 - He may not be poor, but his driving is
DNQ) Alex Riberio - 1/10 - Awful.
DNPQ) Pierre Dieudonne - 7/10 - Exceeded expectations
DNPQ) Brett Lunger - 5/10 - Performance wasn't enough to guarantee seat.
DNPQ) Leonhard von Gottorp - 6/10 - Couldn't have done more
DNPQ) Maurizio Flammini - 5/10 - Need more to make grid
DNPQ) Tony Trimmer - 8/10 - Iberia could've made it into Qualifying.
DNPQ) Piercarlo Ghinzani - 4/10 - C'mon.
DNPQ) Giancarlo Martini - 2/10 - Mama Mia
DNPQ) Henri Pescarolo - 3/10 - Uncharacteristically poor.
DNPQ) Gimax - 10/10 - 14th? What? How?
DNPQ) Herve Regout - 1/10 - A waffle could've driven faster.
DNPQ) Harald Ertl - 1/10 - Proving that a moustache cannot make an outdated car fast.
DNPQ) William Ferguson - 2/10 - Is making Ertl look silly.
DNPQ) Andy Sutcliffe - 5/10 - Deserves a shot at better equipment
DNPQ) Loris Kessel - 1/10 - Does not.
DNPQ) Renzo Zorzi - 2/10 - Close to the B&S March-Renzos.
DNPQ) Alberto Colombo - -5/10 - Shocking

With that, entries for the Trofeu Dino Ferrari are full. From the driver RNGs, all drivers accepted their offers, apart from the following:

Giacomo Agostini, with Patrick Depailler instead filling that seat.
Derek Daly, who chooses to focus on his F3 championship tilt.
Siegfried Stohr, whose inexperience led to him being denied an opportunity to compete. Stephen South accepted the seat.

North Star Racing seem to be researching for a faster car overall, as their pre-qualifying times have been way below expectations. More to come as this story developes.

sigh.

Well, quite a bit went on during my final exams on here, it seems.

Is there any way to make my North Star machine faster?

You're currently running a two-year-old chassis with two-year-old engines driven by pay-drivers, which is where the deficit is coming from. North Star only have £60,000, so unfortunately there's not a lot you can do with that little budget.

Hesketh will take the NGK supplier upgrade if we can afford it (it's not entirely clear if we have to pay £30k again or not)

It's that time again - 6 races (and a few lost months) into the season, here's the second Pre-Qualifying shuffle.

Clearing Pre-Q: None
Remaining in Pre-Q: Renault* (12th, Best Finish: 10th), Shadow (14th, Best finish: 12th), Penske (19th, Best Result: DNQ), Hesketh (20th, Best Result: DNPQ),
Dropping to Pre-Q: None

Here's a list of all upgrades that were put in before the break that have now been applied.

Upgrades
Ensign purchased an Alfa Romeo engine upgrade.
Ensign requested their supplier upgrade from Liqui Moly: +8 BHP
Tyrrell purchased a Delta upgrade: +110 Grip
Williams purchased an Epsilon upgrade: +138 Grip
Renault purchased a Renault engine upgrade.
Hesketh requested their supplier upgrade from NGK. +1 BHP
Penske requested their Michelin upgrade +24 Grip
Ferrari requested their supplier upgrade from Agip. +100 Grip

No, supplier upgrades are free once you have signed that supplier.
