Following confirmation that Melbourne will host the first ever World Championship grand prix in Australia, Tony Gaze is expected to delay his retirement from motor racing until next year.

Gaze was previously set to hang up his helmet this year, bowing out with a podium finish at the Spanish Grand Prix with Ferrari, but with the 1958 season debuting with a race on home soil, Gaze is expected to be tempted out of retirement one last time.

"We want Tony to race for us in Australia, and I think Tony wants to do it also," said Ferrari operations manager Simone Bizzarri. "We plan to have one car next year to rotate amongst local and young drivers, and to have Tony in this car for Melbourne is the idea. We will see if it happens."

Scuderia Centro-Sud, Scuderia Ugolini nor Loonmotor will enter the US Grand Prix. However, as agreed with Biscione, Centro-Sud allow Masten Gregory to drive for North America Racing Team for this event.

Right, the deadline has passed.

The Madman Muntz entries have been turned down. I'm afraid that I can't justify RNGing three cars without a prior budget or any indication beyong "Kurtis Kraft-Offenhauser".

John Norwood, however, has been accepted on the condition that neither he nor his car will appear in any other race. I'll take this as an opportunity to begin cautiously allowing the very limited introduction of one-off cars without requiring a budget.

I know it's probably too late, but I was thinking the chassis would be a Kurtis 500D and the engines would be the same kind of Offy L4 that was used in 1960 by Scarab.

Pretty sure Muntz already owned some Kurtis Kraft chassis from his USAC exploits, so that shouldn't be a huge issue money-wise. The main problem would be the modified Offy engines, but they produced so many that I kinda hoped it'd be okay.

Plus, it's not like Muntz would be entering any non-American races - it was just about fleshing out the grid for this GP really

This is it. Formula 1 has arrived in upstate New York for the very first time, with the world's fastest racing cars gearing up for a 93-lap race around the new Watkins Glen circuit. The talk of the paddock remains that of the world championship, which has raged from the first race of the season. The much faster Jack Brabham has all but dominated the races he has finished, but poor reliability has left him second behind the more consistent and reliable Stirling Moss. The Brit has an eight-point lead going into this race. Here's how Brabham can still win.

-Brabham wins, and Moss finishes sixth or lower.

With all that clarified, let's take a look at the 21 drivers present.

-Scuderia Ferrari, season largely done, decided to send only one car to Watkins Glen for Umberto Maglioli. The other two 801 chassis were loaned to the NART team for Ferrari driver Phil Hill and potential 1958 signing Masten Gregory.
-With Voeckler disputing Gordini's intentions to enter André Simon in Watkins Glen, the team had to substitute Jo Bonnier in the car at the last minute, while Hernando da Silva Ramos and Harry Schell jump back into the cars for the last race of the year.
-With financial issues pressing closer and closer, Connaught has sent only one car Stateside, with Stuart Lewis-Evans taking the wheel.
-Similarly, Rob Walker Racing left its B.C.M.A. in Europe, with only the Lotuses making the trip. Troy Ruttman, who usually drives the B.C.M.A., takes Trintignant's drive for his home race.
-As always, the entry list includes a couple of privateers. Experienced sportscar driver Isabelle Haskell loaned an O.S.C.A. chassis from David Hampshire coupled with a factory engine, while SCCA regular John Norwood has a converted Lister sportscar with a 2-litre Bristol engine.
-Most European teams did not make the trip, most notably Vanwall, Owen and Scuderia Centro Sud. The last of these therefore allowed Masten Gregory, under contract with Centro Sud, to drive for NART.

No true surprise at the very front, though Peter Collins declined to give Jack Brabham a confidence-boosting pole position. Stirling Moss prepares his defence of the championship league with a front row start, while Onofre Marimón stuns the crowd with a second row performance. Umberto Maglioli could only manage 14th place due to setting only one time, which was one better than Stuart Lewis-Evans. The Connaught mechanics spent much of the session agitating around the car, but the starter motor refused to budge.

The Connaught's mechanical failure prevented an otherwise certain DNQ for John Norwood, who takes his Lister-Bristol to the grid behind fellow privateer Isabelle Haskell. Gregory, Hill and Scott Brown bring up the rest of the field behind the usual suspects.

To avoid further potential embarrassment and depression, I have decided to make a decision very carefully to resign from Connaught at the end of this season. I just don't feel deserved to be running a team here but also my new college plans are affecting me from taking part in this series as well as possibly another couple series. More details to come when I can state it down on the "Nipping Out" thread.

October 27th 1957, United States Grand Prix

Mike Hawthorn got the best start, with the front row all getting off rather sedately and falling behind Hawthorn and González. Collins and Brabham led Moss, who was in fifth place at the end of the first lap. Brabham left his bad start behind him, dismissing Collins and González on the second lap, while Moss dropped to sixth behind a charging Harry Schell. On the fourth lap, Hawthorn quietly let Brabham into the race lead and the provisional world title. However, this seemed to be solely to prove a point regarding their Pedralbes accident, as Hawthorn took the lead back on the next lap. The Australian's title hopes further suffered when González let Moss into fifth place, and even more so when he fell behind Collins and Moss passed Schell for fourth place.

The whole race's landscape changed on the twelfth lap when Hawthorn lost control at the uphill Esses, stalling on the trackside grass. Collins inherited the lead, while Brabham was caught out and barely kept second place ahead of Ramos, Moss and Bonnier. Brabham had trouble recovering pace, and Moss took second place on lap 15. This didn't last until the end of the lap, though, as both were passed by a surprising Harry Schell, and Brabham was also passed by Ramos. Volonterio was the second man to retire, with a gearbox failure. Harry Schell followed suit a few laps later with differential failure from a brilliant second place.

The race for the title changed again shortly after lap 20, when Brabham and Bonnier rocketed to second and third places taking advantage of a mistake by Moss. This seemed symptomatic of an issue with Moss' car, which held up Ramos but allowed a very feisty Masten Gregory to take fourth place! The problem with the O.S.C.A. was soon revealed as Moss stopped at the top of the Esses, leaking oil under his car. This elevated the unlikely Isabelle Haskell to sixth place behind Gregory and Maglioli. On lap 32, Brabham finally took second place behind Collins when he passed Bonnier.

It took a few laps for Gregory and Haskell to drop out of the points, replaced by Ramos, Marimón and Fangio. Shortly after the halfway mark, Bonnier made his way past Brabham again, though the Australian remained faster. On lap 55, he took second place again, with Collins still comfortably in the lead and Umberto Maglioli now in fourth place. Archie Scott Brown was the race's fifth retirement when his gearbox failed. Ramos followed suit a few laps later with suspension issues. Robert Manzon's brakes followed, leaving only Bonnier in the race for Gordini.

Bonnier couldn't keep up the effort, falling behind Brabham by a way, though he was still far ahead of Fangio and Maglioli. As Brabham began to catch Collins, discussions began to occur in the pits at B.C.M.A. and O.S.C.A.. Team orders to let a teammate past hadn't officially occurred in the world championship before, while O.S.C.A. considered swapping Moss for Fangio, a move that hadn't yet been attempted during a live championship race. As Fangio lost out to Maglioli, O.S.C.A. lost interest, but B.C.M.A. waited to ensure that Bonnier was out of harm's way. The Swede refused to fall far behind enough for a long, long time, delaying the situation uncomfortably late.

As the gap tightened and there were ten laps remaining, Peter Collins was shown a chalkboard with the indication "2-1 SWAP". Immediately, he began to carry less speed through the corners, and Brabham began to catch up. When Juan Manuel Fangio's engine expired, the move became yet more justified, with González inheriting sixth place, too far to make a difference were he to swap with Moss. Brabham caught Collins with 7 laps remaining, though Collins was unenthusiastic about letting the pass happen immediately. Brabham, unimpressed, blew past on lap 88, though Collins, still trying to prove a point, stayed in his tracks, at the very least pretending to look for a good spot to overtake.

It was all for naught. In what would be a very controversial move, Jack Brabham won a record fourth race of the season, the tenth of his career, and a record third consecutive world title. Peter Collins finished close behind in second place, while Jo Bonnier ended up relegated two laps behind. Umberto Maglioli finally recorded another points finish with fourth place ahead of Marimón and González. Gregory and Haskell finished just outside the points despite a very good race performance. Hill, Bira, Ruttman and Norwood were the last finishers.

End of the season

Before we head into next season, here are a few things:

-Due to prolonged inactivity, Group Ultimate, Scuderia Albertini and Assasti Millanti have closed down. Their existing money will not be redistributed, though any components will be put up for the traditional auction.

-As the landscape of ASMF-active members has changed a lot this past year, and many complex deals have been made regarding team ownership, I would like to ask you all to state a rough outline of your 1958 plans: which team(s) are you running and, if said team is different to the 1957 team, what happens to the previous team?

-If you do not respond, it will be assumed that you intend to carry on with the status quo, and all your money and components will be carried on into 1958.

The auction will begin in a few hours. You may begin to post your plans.

I'll be up for anything - either I can take over Rob Walker from Wizzie, or one of Pasta's small teams, or enter a new team... depends :P

I too would be interested in running either a new team or taking over one in 1958. It looks like the latter is more likely as the few teams left vacant on the RL 1958 entry list are either defunct or F2 entrants.

IRC will focus on Libre events from next year, another crazy entry will appear at Sebring (please, no one enter any Kurtis Krafts, that will ruin my plans for the 1959 race) and I might throw in some more conventional local entries along the way (F2 Porsches, maybe some Coopers, that sort of thing).

Hernandez will carry on, hopefully with Thirion driving, and with a brand new spanking chassis or engine.

DB will carry on with the same ol' goodies and with the possibility of a new hire.

De Oliveira and Haskell will both return.

Scuderia Centro-Sud, Scuderia Ugolini and Loonmotor will continue through 1958. Plans for each team are yet to be decided, but Scuderia Centro-Sud will be my main project, with Ugolini as a side interest and Loonmotor as backmarkers.

Also, I will again be entering a brace of privateers at each race.

Might join 1958, Although I don't know if I should run an inactive team, or Create something Original for the series, I have a plan in mind, as once (if we do reach 1961) I'll probably run Honda, who will take over the team I have planned, A small British team, Known as Genesis Engineering
Now located in CANADA in 2019, canon wise.

EDIT : Info on Guastalla, Guastalla died out after the owner gambled in venice.

Actually, after further research, is there any chance I could enter Brian Naylor's JBW team in 1958 (if it's not already taken) with either customer chassis or self-built JBW cars?(which would be a year early)

Gordini have of course withdrawn from F1. With its assests being acquired by Voeckler. ART Themselves will be spun of as a seperate entity taking ownership of 2 of the type 56 packages and 1 alfa romeo package to be run at selected events during the 1958 season.

Meanwhile i hope to reenter Cooper for next season and beyond.

As Petoli states above, Gordini will now morph into Voeckler. As we are inheriting the IP for their cars as well, they are in essence a manufacturer, but for storyline purposes they are only semi-works.

I will also march on at the helm of Scuderia Ferrari whilst controlling Voeckler, an exception that was vetted and approved earlier in the year.

Along with these two primary projects, I intend to have Ecurie Ecosse return once more on a local privateer basis, and will be looking to one of the British manufacturers to strike a deal for rentals.

I am also looking to licence out North American Racing Team once again to a responsible individual, who will be provided with one or more top-spec Ferraris for Sebring.

I also plan to enter Testut and Chiron at Monaco if nobody else elects to do so, and expect further privateer efforts not yet planned as the season progresses.

Hampshire Racing Alliance will soldier on into 1958. My intention is to return to a two-car lineup, with the potential of a third car should David Hampshire fancy an occasional entry.

After a year off to lick his wounds and recover from his embarrassing performance in Bangkok, I intend to have Sir Jeremy Boles have a couple of one-off entries throughout the year. Sadly though, he still doesn't know what good equipment is. :pantano:

DB will build a brand new DB 01 and DB 84-1 combination and sell it to Norfolk for 5 000. DB will also sell to auction all Bentley engines on it's possesion and give 1k of it's profits to Norfolk

After an agreement with DB, Norfolk Engineering will enter into the 1958 season.

A few local outings for Reg Parnell Racing (with current equipment and finances) and Ecurie Maarsbergen.

I have no plans on reviving Cooper, so if anyone else wants to start with them with a clean slate, you got my permission. I'm not sure how the ownership rights are anymore. Then again, that was only the case of one specific model.
