The Complete 1957 Season Preview - Part Three
Hampshire Racing Alliance
For the first time in years, David Hampshire did not score any points, but that doesn't mean his season was a failure. He qualified for five races, and Roy Salvadori also made the grid a couple of times. While no points were scored, the team was able to tickle the midfield on occasion, and acquiring newer machinery may help them qualify more regularly. David himself is rumoured to be stepping aside in the very near future, and while Salvadori hasn't yet extended his stay with the team, he is expected to stay on for another year.

Officine Alfieri Maserati
Miraculously, Maserati not only survived 1956, they actually improved on their previous performances, albeit at the expense of stopping the use of a Maserati chassis and using a rejected Ferrari design as the "Maserati" engine. Lucien Bianchi proved a burgeoning talent, securing eighth place in Belgium, and it was a crushing blow to the team when he left to Scuderia Adriatica. In what can be considered a straight swap, Maserati inherit the anonymous and nearly mononymous Gerino Gerini, who must try to keep Maserati out of bankruptcy for yet another year. They are no longer tied to Cooper explicitly, having sold their shares to Colin Chapman, but this has also removed their source of income. They can't hold out for much longer.

Vandervell Products Ltd.
While Vanwall is one of the more wealthy manufacturers on the grid and their machinery is by no means awful, they have one major issue: they cannot seem to attract exceptional drivers, and those they do tend to get injured. They lost Mike Hawthorn to B.C.M.A., and a succession of Cliff Allison, Jack Fairman, Les Leston and Jim Russell couldn't take the car to a position anywhere near points, although Ken Kavanagh took a Bruce Halford-owned model to fifth place in Bangkok. Desperately searching for an answer, Tony Vandervell managed to sign notorious bon-vivant Duncan Hamilton, left in the lurch when IRC pulled out of the sport. With a new car out once more, they will be hoping to challenge for points.

Scuderia Adriatica
While they were decidedly a lower midfield team in 1956, this was a massive step up from Adriatica's humble 1955 beginnings. With the help of semi-works Ferrari machinery, Gerini and Serafini were able to regularly qualify, and although Ferrari's repossession of the cars may have seemed like a blow, they were able to secure the IRC Lancias at auction for a ludicrously low sum, suddenly giving semi-competitive machinery at nearly no cost. With the now-in-demand Lucien Bianchi returning to the team, joined by near-rookie Giorgio Scarlatti, this year is a bit of an unknown, but they are unlikely to fare any worse than they did in 1956.

MSG Köthen
Despite the outwardly bland exterior, the story behind MSG Köthen was more savoury than it appeared. Run by Theo Fitzau with the approval of Walter Ulbricht to race on the other side of the Iron Curtain, the ability to run O.S.C.A. machinery meant that Fitzau was more than just an additive to the F1 menu, but rather a legitimate midfield threat. Unfortunately, the meat of his Western appearances ended in mechanical failure, but the promise was there. Fitzau decided to stop driving last season, and he managed to sign podium-scorer and talented F3 racer and mechanic Heinz Melkus, who will drive the car next year. With the team atmosphere being fairly relaxed, there isn't much at steak here.

Ecurie Maghreb
First appearing in 1955 with the promise of a Moroccan Grand Prix, that race's cancellation left the team without a purpose. They carried on nonetheless, with Louis Chiron and André Guelfi taking turns driving the AAC and the O.S.C.A., without any success in any race in 1956. When it was announced that the Moroccan round would reappear in 1957, their existence gained purpose once more, and with Guelfi staying on board, they are eager to race in front of their home crowd in Anfa.

Owen Racing Organisation
Alfred Owen ran away from the thought of building his own cars and returned to being a privateer before the BRM venture even began, and the resulting third-of-a-season went about as well as could be expected, and just as well as BRM's full season. Jack Fairman tried his hardest, but proved unable to wrestle the car to any good results, though he did manage a race start. This year, with a bigger budget and plans to enter more races, Owen may find themselves further up the grid with a new BRM engine and the promising Alan Stacey joining Fairman as second driver.

Scuderia Guastalla
The relatively mysterious Italian team based in a small village in Emilia-Romana made their underwhelming first appearance last year in Monza, entering old AAC 555s for Piero Scotti and Giorgio Becucci. Scotti decided that a full-time drive with the team wasn't a good use of his time, but Giorgio Becucci, eager to travel across Europe doing the thing he loves, jumped on the opportunity. However, with a less-than-stellar record, it is unlikely that Becucci will get accepted by many race organisers, if any.

Rob Walker Racing
When Colin Chapman decided to take a year out of Formula 1, he sold some of the existing Lotus equipment to wealthy Johnnie Walker heir Rob Walker. With the machinery came the loyalty of B. Bira and Maurice Trintignant, left reeling after a difficult campaign that saw the tragic loss of Dries van der Lof and the injury of Trintignant himself. While Masten Gregory and Lex Davison did their best as replacements, they were left out in the cold when the time came to sign two drivers. Walker certainly has money, but he has next to no works support. This is likely to be a transition year for the team.

Volga Testa Russo
Inspired by the popularity of the championship races in Tallinn and Rostock, the USSR felt that they should increase their involvement in top-class motorsport. Rather than focusing on reverse-engineered versions of Western machinery run out of the government offices, they instead asked GAZ to completely design their own cars, based in a purpose-built factory in Kaliningrad, using the new Volga brand. However, told to build as many cars as possible with a low budget, the resulting NK1 chassis is not expected to be a resounding success. Their drivers are thought to be some of the most successful in the USSR, though. Some of these men are relatively unknown, and their ages are estimates.

Of course OSCA will supply one, for a cost of 17,500.

1500S-56 engine 9 will be sent to Guastalla.

Ecurie Maarsbergen
This Dutch privateer team run by nobleman Carel Godin de Beaufort has been appearing in some sportscar races over the past year, and the portly de Beaufort has been making eyes at Formula One for some time now. While he and Toine Hezemans retired from Le Mans and did not prove to be blindingly quick elsewhere, he's not lacking in enthusiasm. He plans to enter the Dutch Grand Prix, pending the acquisition of suitable machinery.

Ecurie Voeckler
This year once again, the Voeckler stable aim to enter a handful of races, with five of them being within reach of their Paris base. Hoping for some more Gordini equipment for use this year, they haven't yet announced who will be driving for them, though André Simon remains in good relations with the team.

Ecurie Ecosse
David Murray's squad is returning to the fray once again, despite the cancellation of the Scottish Grand Prix. David Murray himself has retired from driving, and no one has been signed to drive the B.C.M.A. machinery in the races, but Ivor Bueb and Ninian Sanderson are both free agents in Formula 1 and would make for good additions to the grid.

Automobiles Deutsch et Bonnet
Last year was understandably difficult for DB, what with an old chassis and a 750cc engine designed to win the Index of Performance at Le Mans. Things may be looking up this year, with the purchase of 1954 Bentley engines, but the chassis will remain an issue. As of yet, they have not made any moves toward signing drivers, although if none are found, René Bonnet himself can always jump back into the car. Another tough year is in store, but they brought this on themselves.

Due to high expense costs and the team's main focus to run in only the entire European and possibly the US GP, Connaught chooses not to participate in this round. They shall continue to focus and to hopefully attend their first race of the season at Reims.

Asso di Fiori will enter Morocco with Onofre Marimón as the driver, using O.S.C.A. F156A chassis 14 and O.S.C.A. 1557 engine 8.

The first race of the season is upon us, and this time, the Moroccan Grand Prix has not been cancelled. In fact, contrary to what was originally announced, the Grand Prix will be 78 laps long rather than over 100, due to confusion over the length of the circuit layout. 22 drivers will take to the track for Sunday's race, and 27 of them have made the trip across the Mediterranean.

Jack Brabham picks up where he left off, scoring his sixth career pole position and his first for B.C.M.A., who take their fifth pole, and come within a fraction of a second of securing the whole first row. Robert Manzon is the only highlight for Gordini, who can anticipate a difficult season, as can Bira and Trintignant. Indeed, Rob Walker has proven fairly bad at running a team so far, only barely putting both cars into the top 20. Finally, the Volgas prove to be just as slow as everyone expected, although it took a near miracle for René Bonnet to outpace both of them. In the battle for qualification, though, the big loser is Lucien Bianchi, whose grid spot was taken by a last-ditch attempt from Bob Gerard in the BRM.

February 24th 1957, Moroccan Grand Prix
Peter Collins completely fluffed the start, holding up many drivers behind him. Giorgio Scarlatti, starting from the back row, didn't spot him until very late, swerving to avoid him, then losing control and spinning into the wall, ending his race before it even began. On the following lap, Hamilton ran over some of the resulting debris, generating a puncture that caused him to spin out of the race. At the front, Brabham had already taken the lead and was pulling away from Manzon, González, Moss, Collins and Hawthorn. On lap 5, Bira misjudged a low-speed move on Gaze, resulting in the Lotus' rear end coming to a halt just inches in front of the Australian's face!

The first mechanical retirement occurred on the following lap when Graham Hill's gearbox failed spectacularly out of a promising 13th place. He was followed a few laps later by Bob Gerard, with an oil leak. At the front, little was changing, with Brabham in a comfortable lead ahead of Manzon and González. Hawthorn and Moss were fighting over fourth, followed by a group containing Maglioli, Volonterio and Collins. After 35 laps, Brabham's lead over Manzon was over 80 seconds, and he had lapped all but Manzon. Manzon's teammate Jo Bonnier, meanwhile, backed his Gordini into the straw bales on lap 37.

The race was turned on its head on lap 41 when Jack Brabham's race was ended by a suspension upright failure. Manzon inherited the lead from Hawthorn, González, Moss, Volonterio and Maglioli, while further back, Castellotti invoked the anger of Rob Walker by brake-checking Maurice Trintignant, sending the Frenchman into a nearby wall. Maurice was taken to a local hospital for checks. The field was further reduced to a rather monotonous 12 when Gerino Gerini had a spin on the oil dropped by Bob Gerard's BRM. At this point, González took second place, but proceeded to hold up the rest of the pack, allowing for a constant exchange of positions.

In the end, no one could prevent Robert Manzon from taking a dominant victory after Brabham's retirement. Controlling a two-lap lead, he won his fifth Grand Prix victory ahead of González, Hawthorn, Maglioli, Moss and Collins, who set the fastest lap of the race shortly after making his way past the gaggle of Sanesi, Guelfi and Volonterio. Reg Parnell threw away a race finish when he lost grip on the sandy tramlines and smashed into a palm tree. He left his car under his own power.
