John Bekaert
John Bekaert (Chassis: Ferrari R560 1 / Engine: Ferrari RS560 1)
Roy Bloxam (Chassis: Ferrari R560 5 / Engine: Ferrari RS560 2)

Encouraged by his Irish outing, Bekaert enters another Grand Prix. Bloxam joins him again, but will be hoping for better this time.

Volga Testa Russo
Zahar Shteyngrud (Chassis: Volga NK1.8 / Engine: Volga GZ 1.8)

Rumour has it, the Kremlin is beginning to lose interest in its Grand Prix wing, which is reflected by its failure once again to send more than one car.

Time to enter a few privateers.

Cliff Allison would like to rent a Connaught-O.S.C.A. package from Connaught, under the Daily Express banner.

Ron Flockhart will rent Bentley Speed 4 chassis 11 from Scuderia Ugolini. He approaches anybody willing to lend him an engine of any marque to fit in the back.

Bob Gerard approaches all manufacturers for a chassis and engine in which to enter the British Grand Prix. If he obtains a car, he will enter under the Daily Express banner.

August 2nd 1957, British Grand Prix prequalifying

Stirling Moss is now the favourite. With yet another retirement from B.C.M.A. team leader Jack Brabham in Wicklow, Moss capitalised and scored a third win of the season. His 37 points put him 18 points ahead of Umberto Maglioli and 19 ahead of Brabham. Five races are left and 45 points are available for any driver with the will, pace and reliability to take them. Brabham may be the fastest driver, but this is now Moss' title to lose.

43 drivers have gathered at Silverstone hoping to secure one of 22 spots on Sunday's grid.

-Rob Walker Racing return after missing Ireland. Bira is still injured, so two-time Indy 500 champion and 1952 Dutch Grand Prix winner Troy Ruttman steps in alongside Trintignant.
-Continuing a streak of trademark unadvisable moves, Loonmotor bring two cars across the channel for regular Rob Slotemaker and Hans Davids, who made his début in Zandvoort.
-After two major accidents in Wicklow, Adriatica find themselves in deep financial trouble. They bring their backup Lancia D50 to Silverstone for Bianchi, having scrapped their previous two cars.
-Scuderia Ferrari bring a fourth car to this event, with Tony Gaze now on a part-time schedule and set to retire at the end of the year.
-André Simon and Écurie Voeckler were forced to miss the Irish Grand Prix, due to transport costs, but they're back in Silverstone, hoping to get another race finish.
-This time, the Volga contingent is represented by Zahar Shteyngrud, one of the seemingly more talented of the Soviet hands.
-A few years after their first exercise in the matter, the Daily Express newspaper have once again backed a couple of entries in the British Grand Prix. After Bob Gerard turned down the offer, Cliff Allison and Paul Emery will be driving the cars with the newspaper's name plastered on the side, a Connaught-O.S.C.A. and Vanwall respectively.
-Ron Flockhart, after renting a Cooper-Bentley for the French Grand Prix, is back for Silverstone in the other Connaught-O.S.C.A. loaned from the works team.
-Hernandez and DB are missing out on this round, put off by the small grid.

21 drivers will have to prequalify.

The usual frontrunners have no issues prequalifying, while the main interest revolved around the final two spots. The drivers finishing seventh to fourteenth were separated by just over one second, highlighting just how close this fight was. Privateer Ron Flockhart is easily the most surprising name to make the main session, at the expense of the likes of de Filippis, Behra, Sanderson or Bianchi.

At least we won't be able to wreck this car too in the race.

You've got to be a special kind of special to be six seconds a lap off the pace of a Loonmotor.

However, there are rumours that Volga Testa Russo mechanics may have stolen one of the two Lancia chassis due to be scrapped by Scuderia Adriatica. Whether these rumours are true, and of how much help this could possibly be to the Soviet squad, remains to be seen.

29. Ivor Bueb (B.C.M.A.) - 1:52.83
30. Ron Flockhart (Connaught-O.S.C.A.) - 1:53.95

Mike Hawthorn takes his second consecutive pole position, with Stirling Moss preventing an all-B.C.M.A. front row. André Simon and Alan Stacey trouble the works monopoly on the top 10 with some good performances at the front of an incredibly tight midfield. The small grid had to claim one victim from this midfield, and due to restricted track time, it was Tony Gaze who was unable to set a time good enough to make the top 22.

August 4th 1957, British Grand Prix
Mike Hawthorn had a terrible start, ending the first lap in seventh place, with González and Simon rocketed past the front row, finishing the first lap in the lead, the Argentine in the lead. However, Simon got the tow on the second lap and passed González into Stowe to take the race lead. He held it strongly until the fifth lap, when a spin put him back behind González's O.S.C.A.. On the next lap, the first retirement occurred when Consalvo Sanesi's Ferrari engine let go, shrouding the car in smoke. Ottorino Volonterio followed, pulling out of fourth place with a gearbox failure. By lap 10, the order had settled with González leading Simon, Brabham, Collins and Hawthorn, with Moss and Marimón fighting for sixth place.

Duncan Hamilton pulled off to the side of the track with suspension issues on lap 14. By this point, Brabham had caught Simon and was challenging for second place. Simon responded by setting a provisional fastest lap and taking the lead again on lap 15. There was some action at the tail end of the top 10 when Masten Gregory lazily threw his O.S.C.A. into the side of Gallagher's Gordini, succeeding only in taking himself out of the race while Gallagher only lost time. On lap 19, after many failed attempts, Brabham finally succeeded in passing González, taking second place. One lap later, his teammate Collins followed him through, taking third. On lap 23, Brabham started to hit lapped traffic, and this allowed Collins to catch and pass his teammate. It only took one lap for the Worcestershire-born driver to rocket into the lead, passing Simon on the 24th lap. Brabham, in a reversal of fortunes, fell behind González.

Simultaneously, Jo Bonnier, having had a miserable race in last place, threw his Gordini into the straw bales, bringing an end to an utter waste of a Sunday afternoon. The distraction caused Collins to slow briefly, allowing Simon to pass the Englishman and take the lead once more on lap 25. This only lasted one lap, as Simon had a spin out of Chapel, falling behind Brabham and González. By this point, the fight for the lead now included Collins, Brabham, Simon and González, with the first of these pulling away slightly while the other three constantly exchanged positions. Collins eventually slowed, along with the rest of the top four, allowing Onofre Marimón, now in an impressive fifth, to catch and join them. On lap 33, the race for the win took a turn for the important, as Stirling Moss' engine failed, ending the Brit's streak of six consecutive points finishes.

The attrition had only just begun. Moss' teammate González broke down on the side of the track on lap 35, his O.S.C.A. emitting the distinct aroma of clutch brûlée. By this point, Collins had pulled away again, with Brabham behind in a B.C.M.A. 1-2, and Simon, Marimón and Mike Hawthorn fighting over third place. Joe Flynn's brakes soon started fading, taking him out of seventh place and ensuring he couldn't repeat his performance from Wicklow. On the 43rd lap, Mike Hawthorn's gearbox failed, allowing the quick Robert Manzon to jump into third position, ahead of Simon and Marimón. Trintignant retired at the same time, with an oil leak, leaving 12 drivers in the race.

Manzon began to push to challenge for the lead, as Collins and Brabham were slowing to preserve their cars. This ended badly for the Gordini driver, as his hopes, much like his engine, went up in smoke on lap 45, putting André Simon back in third place. The race lost another driver when Alan Stacey punted Archie Scott Brown off the road in a bid to leave last place. Another streak of finishes was then ended, when Umberto Maglioli's race ended on lap 47, with a clutch failure from an anonymous eighth place. Ahead of him, Simon had caught and passed Brabham in another feat of sheer will power. This didn't faze Brabham, who responded with a new fastest lap when taking the place back. Gallagher's gearbox failed soon after.

With eight cars remaining, the field had stabilised with Collins leading Brabham, Simon, Marimón, Fangio, Cabianca, Stacey and Ruttman. At least, for a couple laps. On lap 53, Brabham decided to launch his attack, catching Collins on lap 52 and finding a way past on the following way around, setting yet another fastest lap. Fangio's impressive race was soon ended, when a race-long slow leak caught up to him by causing him to run out of fuel. The main attraction soon became the fight for third, with Marimón attempting to find a way past Simon, but his job was made trivial with fewer than ten laps remaining, when Simon's transmission failed, ending a brilliant race with heartbreak for the Frenchman.

In the end, Brabham pulled away from Collins so quickly, he'd lapped him by the end of the race on his way to a ninth career victory. Onofre Marimón scored a very creditable podium for Asso di Fiori in the O.S.C.A., ahead of Giulio Cabianca in the 1956 Ferrari, Troy Ruttman in the Rob Walker Lotus and Alan Stacey, who scores Owen's first ever point.

Disappointing race for O.S.C.A. Well done Onofre Marimon and Asso di Fiori for keeping us ahead of BCMA in the constructors' championship.
