Autosport wrote:Reuter beats Suzuki on Charade fight

It was a very eventfull day at Charade today, as Manuel Reuter in his Ford Sierra RS500 prepared by the works Ford team, Zakspeed, took reigns by just a bit more than a second from the Nismo R32 of Toshio Suzuki, who finished 2nd. The fight for victory involved the Nismo and the RS500's as a whole, with multiple drivers leading the race at some points. Eventually only Reuter and Suzuki finished from both teams.

Finishing over a minute behind, leading his first career laps, was the B Class winner, the USD Supra of David Leslie, with Cleland 4th overall, the last driver in the lead lap. Altfrid Heger rounded up the top 5 in his Audi V8, followed by Robbie Francevic in the Volvo, with Jean-Michel Martin in 7th taking victory in C Class. Tim Harvey finished 8th for Mercedes, with Dieter Quester in 9th taking Volker Schmidt's best result so far in WTCM. Marc Hessel rounded up the top 10, taking pole for the sprint race.

D Class saw Thomas von Lowis of Menar take victory ahead of Helmut Maier.

Autosport wrote:Geisler scores debut win from lowest ever grid spot

Andrea Geisler, from 24th place on the grid - the lowest starting position so far in WTCM for a race winner - took victory in today's sprint race around the Charade circuit. Just under a second separated the german Nismo from her team-mate Naoki Nagasaka, who scored a 1-2 for Nismo today. Manuel Reuter finished 3rd for Zakspeed, taking 2 podiums this weekend, with Toshio Suzuki scoring a 4th place. Oscar Castellano was less than 5 seconds behind the race winner to make sure there were 4 R32's in the top 5. Roland Asch finished in 6th place, with John Cleland leading B Class to finish in 7th place - another good performance by the ever improving brit. Roland Ratzenberger finished in 8th in his Zakspeed, with Jean-Michel Martin in 9th to win C Class. Leslie rounded up the top 10.

D class saw von Menar beat Maier to class victory.

Championship standings and budgets will be updated throughout the week. After it, i'll announce the new upgrade season.

Autosport wrote:Biela and Hoy take victories at Birmingham
In front of a full crowd in Birmingham watching Formula 3000 and WTCM - in a sunny Birmingham - it was a splistream battle that unfolded in front of the british crowd in the PQ races.

In Class A, Frank Biela took a dominating victory to take his second pre-qualifying victory of the year, as he lead every lap from position to win with 1 second advantage to his team-mate Roland Ratzenberger. Ludwig finished 3rd overall, while Hoshino returns to Impul to finish 4th place overall - the japanese very happy with his drive considering his injuries early on the season. Reuter rounded up the top 5 for Zakspeed.
Andrea Geisler was the leading Nismo R32 in 6th place - 6 seconds down on the race winner - with Andy Rouse bringing the Kaliber in 7th place as the leading brit. Donnelly was 8th - another strong performance by the young brit - with Asch and Winkelhock rounding up the top 10.

In Class B, John Cleland defended for the entire race from Juan María Traverso to take home victory ahead of his argentinean team-mate, for british delight. Leslie was 3rd overall, with von Gottorp as the leading Audi in 4th place. Heger finished 5th overall with B-Class championship leader Keke Rosberg in 6th place.
Warwick was 7th overall, with Granberg's 8th, and Andersson and Larsen rounding up the top 10.

In pre-qualifying 2, Will Hoy took british honours for Demon Tweeks as he hanged for the final two laps pressure from Johnny Cecotto to take victory by the end ahead of the Prodrive driver. Giroix takes 3rd overall, with Markus Ostreich 4th. Hessel is 5th, with Modena with a phenomenal drive to 6th place after qualifying 7th. Manthey finished 7th to qualify for the first time this year, with Dieudonné 8th overall to also qualify for the first time this year. Cudini and Quester rounded up the top 10.
The big fact about the race was that none of the factory Mercedes qualified for the race - the new update to the 190E seems to not have worked at all, as Mass was the best qualifier in 11th, and eventually suffered an inccident through the race which lost his chances of qualifying, while Hahne retired from 12th with just 2 to go.
In Class D, Wolfgang Kudrass won ahead of Gokor Peynirici with Helmut Maier rounding up the top 3.

Stuggarter Zeitung wrote:WTCM: MERCEDES “PANIC ON THE STREETS OF BIRMINGHAM”

Answering the reliability question that none of the Mercedes-Benz WTCM drivers seemed to have asked, AMG have been left with egg on their face after seeing all four works 190E sensationally knocked out of the main races in pre-qualifying for the 1989 Birmingham Superprix. The best placed 190E – of former Grand Prix hero Jochen Mass – was over a minute behind the leaders.

Defending WTCM drivers’ champion Tim Harvey – whom won both races last year for Ford – had this to say on the matter: “Well as far as I’m concerned I might as well have been driving a diesel van on the straights – it’s absolutely ludicrous for the team to turn up halfway through the season with all four drivers in a championship battle and give us those heaps of junk!” before adding “I think the FIA might as well send the trophies to Munich after this weekend because I don’t think we can compete with them at all now.”

Whilst the works team faltered, the two main privateer Mercedes teams - Olaf Manthey Racing and Volker Schmidt Racing – saw both teams get into the main races at full strength for the first time this season.
One saving grace for the Stuttgart team is that of the main Class C title contenders, only Marc Hessel and Johnny Cecotto managed to park their BMW M3s on the grid for this weekend’s races. British Touring Car Championship frontrunner Will Hoy – driving for the independent Demon Tweeks BMW team – sits on Class C pole for this weekend’s races. In local driver news; Nissan driver Roland Asch, of Ammerbuch and Philips Car Systems Racing’s Joachim Winkelhock, of Waiblingen start in 9th and 10th position in Class A respectively.

Mercedes-Benz Press Office wrote:Following the disappointing team performance yesterday in pre-qualifying for Round 8 of the 1989 FIA World Touring Car Masters championship in Birmingham, Mercedes-Benz AMG Team will revert to the previous-spec Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 at the ninth round of the championship in Belgium.

Sunday Afternoon Report:
Endurance Race:

Autosport wrote:Dominating Biela wins Birmingham endurance race

Perhaps in one of the most dominating touring car performances so far seen in WTCM, Zakspeed driver and polesitter Frank Biela led the entire 76 laps of the Birmingham endurance race to claim his first victory of the season. Despite an underwhelming career so far for Zakspeed - including getting 3 failures to qualify already - Biela showed himself to be very mature around Birmingham, never losing the lead and always lapping consistently faster its rivals, eventually crossing the finish line 11 seconds ahead of a very emotional return for Kazuyoshi Hoshino.

Around 35 seconds back, in the final spot of the podium, was the Zakspeed of championshio leader Manuel Reuter, as Klaus Ludwig finished in 4th place, almost a minute adrift Frank Biela. Rounding up the top 5, and last driver in the lead lap, was the best british driver in today's race, Geoff Donnelly. Joachim Winkelhock crossed the line in 6th place, with a disappointing Ratzenberger struggling overall with pace to finish in 7th place. Steve Soper was 8th overall, with John Cleland taking his 3rd consecutive B Class victory by finishing in 9th place overall. Lynn St James scored her first points in WTCM to take pole for the sprint race.

11th place was the Audi of Derek Warwick, completing a 1-2 for brits in B Class, with Rosberg gaining points in the B Class championship battle by finishing 3rd in class and 12th overall. The Volvo's of Andersson, Francevic and Granberg followed in 13th, 14th and 15th respectivelly, with the leading C Class car beeing the Prodrive E30 M3 of Johnny Cecotto, who won his class after leader Fabien Giroix was involved in an accident with David Leslie's Toyota. Ostreich and Larsen rounded up the points paying positions.

In D Class, Gokor Peynirici brought his VW home ahead of Wolgang Kudrass to take victory in WTCM's lower class.

Autosport wrote:Ludwig wins sprint race in Zakspeed 1-2-3

Using all his racing experience, and navigating lapped traffic, Klaus Ludwig used that to his advantage to take victory in the sprint race at Birmingham. Despite having a heavier Sierra compared to Biela and Ratzenberger, the german took the lead and holded off his team-mates for the win - Biela and Ratzenberger finishing in 2nd and 3rd, 1 and 2 seconds adrift respectivelly, completing the Zakspeed 1-2-3. Despite having lead the race, Ratzenberger saw Ludwig use lap traffic to pass him, and despite having caught his team-mate, Biela eventually passed him and helded both drivers up - allowind Ludwig to go away with the victory.

4th place, 12 seconds back on Ludwig, was the privateer R32 of Hoshino - a very sucessfull return to competition for the japanese driver who had suffered a broken arm in a crash early this year in Kyalami - with Winkelhock rounding up the top 5. Geisler recovered to finish 6th as the leading factory R32, with Reuter in 7th place - losing points to Ludwig in the championship fight - Asch in 8th, Soper in 9th and Donnelly rounding up the top 10. John Cleland finished in 11th place to score his 4th consecutive B Class victory, with Andy Rouse recovering to the last points paying position.

In C Class, Johnny Cecotto took his second win of the weekend, by finishing 20th overall, ahead of Giroix and Ostreich. D Class saw only one finisher, Wolfgang Kudrass, as Peynirici encountered suspension problems which forced his Golf into retirement.

Autosport wrote:Geisler and Duez share pre-qualifying victories around Spa

In the middle of a dry Ardennes forest - in total contrast from what happened to last year - Spa plays the host to the 8th round of this years World Touring Car Masters round. The fast track through the Ardennes hill - combined with a twisty and flowing sector 2 - provides one of the biggest challenges on the calendar to the drivers.

In the first pre-qualifying of the day, Geoff Donnelly - the surprise polesitter - lost the lead to Frank Biela during the first lap, and the man currently on form in WTCM led until a determined Andrea Geisler slided her R32 down the inside of Biela at La Source to take the lead of the race on lap 3 - from which she never let go. Geisler crossed the finish line 7.3 seconds ahead of Frank Biela, with the Zakspeed's of Roland Ratzenberger and Klaus Ludwig right behind to complete the top 4. Reuter overtook Donnelly in the final lap to finish in 5th place, with the young brit finishing in 6th place - carrying on with a fairly surprising year so far Geoff. Asch was the next R32 in 7th place, with Suzuki, Nagasaka and Hoshino rounding up the top 10 - most Nissan's but Geisler struggling for overall pace around here in pre-qualifying.

In B Class, von Gottorp passed his two Audi team-mates to score an Audi 1-2-3 for the german manufacturer, beating polesitter Heger and Warwick, who despite a bad start, was able to recover to 3rd by the end of the race. Traverso was the leading Supra in both qualifying and in the race, finishing about 4 seconds behind the winning von Gottorp. Leslie was 5th, with Cleland and Rosberg in 6th and 7th. The best performer of the race was Slim Borgudd in the privateer 240 Turbo, as he finished just short of 4 seconds behind Rosberg's Toyota and almost 7 seconds ahead of the next Volvo in 8th place, with Andersson in 9th place and the ever improving Andreas Larsen in 10th place.

C Class saw a fight between two Mercedes' and two privateer BMW's of Waterloo Motors for the victory in the final pre-qualifying of the day - with Jochen Mass and Marc Duez exchanging the lead across the race, the belgian eventually winning the race with a pass in the second-to-last lap. Mass finished about 1 second behind the belgian in second place, with Martin in 3rd rounding up the podium. Hahne was 4th, with Fabien Giroix as the leading manufacturer BMW in 5th place, almost 14 seconds back on the winner. Harvey was 6th, with Giudici and Haezebrouck following suit. Ostreich and C Class championship leader Johnny Cecotto rounded up the top 10.
In D Class, Helmut Maier took another victory to his name as he beat Gokor Peynirici and Thomas von Lowis of Menar to top honours in D Class.
