Saturday Afternoon Report:
Endurance Race:
Image

Autosport wrote:Reuter wins amidst safety criticism for WTCM

It was another dry endurance race at Kyalami in the 1989 World Touring Car Masters, and while the racing proved quite handy and good, the race was marked by an accident involving Nismo's Motorsport Kazuyoshi Hoshino - in the same car as Hasemi drove and crashed at Watkins Glen - on lap 16, when the rear suspension of the car gave away coming onto the main straight and sent the car into the guardraills, before rolling a couple of times and ending on the other side of the track. Hoshino was extracted, and was taken into the hospital for further evaluation.

Of course, this beeing the 3rd big accident that has happened in this year's WTCM has brought safety criticism from part of the drivers and team owners - citing that the Group A cars are coming to a point where they are so extreme that these crashes happen way more often than they should. Is this the end of Group A as we know it?

Meanwhile, in the race, Manuel Reuter became the first ever driver to win 3 consecutive WTCM races - the previous record was 2 races, held jointly by Andy Rouse, Steve Soper and Tim Harvey. Reuter won by 6 seconds from Naoki Nagasaka, who definetelly felt by the end of the race he deserved more than just 2nd - after starting in 13th place, he drove a sterling race to finish 2nd, doing a fantastic end of first stint which saw him go from 7th to 3rd, eventually dropping a gap from 20 seconds to just 6 by the end of the race. Rounding up the podium was Andy Rouse in his return race, taking victory in independents. Frank Biela finished 4th for Zakspeed, with Geisler rounding up the top 5 in her R32.

Eddie Keizan made the locals very happy, as he came home in 6th place overall and 3rd in independents class - a very inspired performance from the south african. David Leslie won B Class by finishing in 7th place, while Keke Rosberg crossed the line in 8th place to continue his points streak. Masutaro Fukuda in the first race in the Impul R32 finished 9th, with Altfrid Heger rounding up the top 10 in the Audi, taking pole in the sprint race - Audi's first in WTCM.

In C Class, Jochen Mass overhauled his team-mates Armin Hahne and Mauro Baldi to take victory, completing a all Mercedes podium, with Hessel and local Wayne Taylor rounding up the top 5 in C Class. D Class saw no finishers for the first time ever in WTCM.

Hoshino's crash

Autosport wrote:Hoshino suffers broken leg in his crash at Kyalami

The FISA has released the final medical report on japanese driver Kazuyoshi Hoshino, after he suffered a suspension failure on lap 16 of the Kyalami Endurance Race, while on the wheel of the #24 Nismo Motorsport Nissan Skyline R32 - coincidentally, the same car Masahiro Hasemi was driving at Watkins Glen when he too suffered a nasty accident.

The official report indicates that Hoshino suffered a broken leg and that he'll need around 3 to 4 months to recover from the injuries and be back in a racing car at full fitness.

Kazuyoshi Hoshino:
1-20 - Fine
21-40 - Out for One Weekend
41-60 - Out for two Weekends
61-70 - Out for three Weekends
71-85 - Out for four Weekends
86-95 - Out for the rest of the season
96-100 - Career Ending
Result: 82 - Out for four weekends

I've been informed by Biscione that Nissan will withdraw Hoshino's car for the time beeing. Confirm this information please Biscotti.

Sunday Report:
Sprint Race:
Image

Autosport wrote:Reuter takes 4th consecutive win in WTCM

Manuel Reuter has taken his 4th consecutive WTCM win - as the german Zakspeed driver continues his hot streak of victories in the sprint race at Kyalami. Naoki Nagasaka was again oh-so-close to victory, but he eventually finished 7 seconds behind Manuel Reuter, but bringing a good points haul of this weekend for him and Nismo after a bad weekend at Watkins Glen. Frank Biela completed the podium today. Eddie Keizan brought joy to the south african locals who attended the race, as by finishing in 4th place, he climbed to the top step of the podium in independents class - only finishing 2 seconds off a main overall podium. Keke Rosberg won B Class by rounding up the top 5.

Andrea Geisler finished in 6th place, followed by the Zakspeed of Roland Ratzenberger in 7th place, Masutaro Fukuda in 8th place in the Impul, with Klaus Ludwig and David Leslie rounding up the top 10 overall.

C Class saw Armin Hahne take his first victory of the year, followed by his team-mates Jochen Mass, Mauro Baldi and defending champion Tim Harvey - completing a Mercedes 1-2-3-4 in class. Marc Hessel rounded up the top 5 in C Class, while Michael Briggs won D Class.

Over the next 1 or 2 days I'll update the budgets. Once I do that, I'll make available the form to fill out for updates, because it's update time!

Stuttgarter Zeitung wrote:WTCM TEAMS SLAM "KILLER" NISSAN

Officials from five of the World Touring Car Masters’ largest teams have reportedly expressed concern at the safety and build quality of the new-for-1989 Nissan Skyline R32.
The five teams; believed to be Zakspeed, Kaliber ICS Racing, Philips Car Systems Racing, Union Saver Developments and Mercedes-Benz AMG held discussions behind closed doors at round three of the WTCM at the Kyalami circuit in South Africa – the scene of yet another ugly accident involving the #24 Nissan of Kazuyoshi Hoshino in the endurance race.

It is believed that the pact of teams are hoping the FIA will re-inspect the Nissan’s homologation documents ahead of the next round in France – though some cynics are speculating that the teams are simply hoping for the powerful R32 to be pegged back ‘for safety reasons’.

When contacted by Stuttgarter Zeitung, all teams involved declined to comment.

Autosport wrote:Zakspeed to suspend A-Class Sierra sales

WTCM is sure getting a lot of attention lately, unfortunately for the wrong reasons in the last few weeks. Masahiro Hasemi and Kazuyoshi Hoshino suffered injuries after experiencing mechanical failures resulting in heavy crashes for both of them in the #24 Nissan GTR 32. This led to growing criticism against the WTCM A-Class, seen as too fast and unsafe. Some critics questionned the safety of the Nissan itself. At the end of the Kyalami weekend dominated by Manuel Reuter in the Zakspeed Sierra, Peter Zakowski, the Zakspeed team principal, decided to suspend the Sierra sales. When asked if the reason was on safety grounds, Zakowski replied "There is no problem with the Sierra itself. It is fast, safe and it has gotten more and more popular after Kaliber and Zakspeed decided to join forces to develop it. However, with Nissan's current problems, we think that the A-Class cars should only be used and prepared by the best professionnals on the grid. Nobody have doubts over Nissan's professionnalism, and they are very competitive, but we do not want this kind of crashes again, this is why we are putting some limits."

More : "The end of the WTCM A-Class ? " see page 7.

Yup, no more Sierras built for now. This does not affect the people who have already bought some and have their entries done.

Autosport wrote:FISA announce new ballast rules starting from Pau onwards

FISA have announced new ballast rules starting from Pau onwards - the organization responsible for the organization of the Formula 1 World Championship, World Touring Car Masters and World Rally Championship citing that the 40kg max ballast applied to cars isn't doing much affect, evidence beeing that the cars don't seem to get slown a lot by throwing only 40kg's of ballast into their car.

Like this, FISA have announced a doubling of ballast for Pau onwards, and will see of it'll reflect car performance. Likewise, this are the new ballast rules:

1st - 80kg
2nd - 70kg
3rd - 60kg
4th - 50kg
5th - 40kg
6th - 30kg
7th - 20kg
8th - 10kg
Ballast will, of course, be continued to be delivered on Class position basis in pre-qualifying and delivered on championship basis for the endurance and sprint race, while beeing kept constant over the race weekend.

Autosport wrote:Castellano and Ravaglia win Pre-Qualifying races at Pau

Pau was going to be a mistery - the first update window of the season was between Kyalami and Pau, and rumours believed Nissan spended almost 2 million in development of the R32 for the remaining of the season, hoping to take the title off Zakspeed hands.

Pre-Qualifying showed why. Pau did not suit the Zakspeed RS500's one bit - the new ballast rules combined with the downforce focused track saw the german team qualifyin the midfield, and without the use of their straightline speed - the longest straight at Pau doesn't let the cars go over 250km/h - they struggled to come through the field.

After taking pole, Roland Asch led early on, but was always under pressure from new WTCM recruit Oscar Castellano - the double TC2000 champion in Argentina, who is following the footsteps of Juan Maria Traverso - and the argentinean eventually cleared him and took victory in his debut in WTCM. Asch holded on for 2nd place, while Andy Rouse finished 3rd in the Kaliber RS500. Geoff Donnelly took advantage of an early on incident - when a spinning FUkuda blocked the track until it got going again (and eventually crashed out) - which split the field into two parts, hanging on for 4th place in the end. Andrea Geisler finished 5th, but ran as high as 3rd early on, but a bump on the wall saw her drop to 5th place in the end. Deborah Gregg qualified the Merkur for Rick Miller Racing at last, finishing in 6th place, with Ludwig beeing the best placed Zakspeed RS500, in 7th place. Winkelhock, Ratzenberger and Soper rounded up the top 10 and the A Class cars who qualified for the race.

In the B Class race, B Class championship leader Keke Rosberg took victory again - continuing to show his incredible talent in touring cars - as he took advantage of David Leslie's retirement to increase his championship gap. John Cleland and Juan Maria Traverso rounded up the top 3, completed a USD 1-2-3 for Toyota. Warwick finished in 4th place, just 2 tenths shy of a podium place, with Gottorp rounding up the top 5 in the Audi. Andreas Larsen was the biggest surprise in his Larsen Racing Volvo - finishing in 6th place, and he held on for 5th for much of the race (if you count in Leslie's retirement). Volvo's rounded up the top 10 and remainder qualifying positions as well - Francevic 7th, Granberg 8th, Andersson 9th and Borgudd 10th.

C Class saw Roberto Ravaglia win his 3rd pre-qualifying race of the win - will he finally be able to break the bad luck in the endurance and sprint races that has come to him this year? - as he finished ahead of the Waterloo Motors BMW's to take victory. Marc Duez was 2nd ahead of his team-mate, Jean-Michel Martin. Ostreich was 4th in the second manufacutrer BMW, with Will Hoy rounding up the top 5 in his WTCM debut. Johnny Cecotto raced up to 6th place in the end, with Armin Hahne in 7th place as the leading Mercedes. After an impressive qualifying from Gianni Giudici, in 2nd place, the italian struggled for race pace and finished 8th in the end. Giroix and Baldi rounded up the top 10, with Mass and Modena also qualifying - this last one getting by just 0.012 in the end, out-dragging Olaf Manthey to the line.

D Class saw Helmut Maier win again, ahead of Barbara Cowell. Gokor Peyrinici finished 3rd in the VW, while Benes took 4th. Linari retired.

Like this, the following cars are qualified for the race:
#10 Mercedes-Benz AMG Team - Mauro Baldi (Mercedes-Benz 190E)
#11 Mercedes-Benz AMG Team - Jochen Mass (Mercedes-Benz 190E)
#12 Mercedes-Benz AMG Team - Armin Hahne (Mercedes-Benz 190E)

#15 Volvo Dealer Team - Robbie Francevic (Volvo 240 Turbo)
