Racing at Spa is always a fantastic sight for any racing driver in the world - the challenge of getting a perfect lap together through the Ardennes Forest tops most drivers list - maybe if you don't put into account the Nurburgring, host of the next round of the World Touring Car Masters.

And as all 48 drivers lined up on the start line and rocketed away for an eventfull 72 laps, early it showed the race would be closelly fought between the Sierra's and the R32's - almost every driver of both teams leading the race at some point. The heat that showed up at Spa played a big part in the reliability that went across the track - most teams having problems and many cars ended up parked at the side of the track with something broken. After most of this had happened and after the pitstop phase, Naoki Nagasaka - who at one point found himself to be almost 20 seconds off the leading group due to an early mistake - found himself in the lead with 15 seconds to Ludwig, having pitted earlier. But he was on old tyres, and the german started to slice the lead with ease, eventually catching the japanese driver with about 20 laps to go.

The two drivers started to scubble for position, and always kept themselves exchanging the lead multiple times - the R32 gaining time on the second sector and using splistream and its braking abilities to get Ludwig into the Bus Stop multiple times, just for the german to use the Sierra's straightline speed to rocket past the R32 in the Kemmel Straight - kept the fans entertained. The fight for victory ended with 4 laps to go when Naoki Nagasaka was told by Nismo to enter the pitbox - the japanese driver didn't have enough fuel to make it to the line and needed a splash and dash to do it. He fell to 4th place, where he would finish. Ludwig crossed the line 5 seconds ahead of Roland Ratzenberger to take his second consecutive victory in WTCM, with Frank Biela completing the Zakspeed 1-2-3 today, about 25 seconds back on his team-mate. Nagasaka's pitstop made him finish almost a minute down, with von Gottorp taking victory in B Class by finishing in 5th place. He also needed a splash and dash to finish the race, but was able to re-overtake Deborah Gregg for 5th place in the Bus Stop.

The american crossed the line in 6th place to win Independents, with Ravaglia in 7th place to win C Class, ahead of Jean-Michel Martin - 8th overall - championship leader Johnny Cecotto in 9th and Phillippe Haezebrouck rounding up the top 10 and guaranteeing pole for the sprint race. Armin Hahne finished in 11th place for Mercedes-Benz with team-mate Harvey in 12th - a good return for Mercedes after a shamefull weekend in Birmingham. Dieudonne was 13th for Volker Schmidt, with David Leslie having a shocking race - due to problems regarding corner speed and aerodynamics not properly assembled according to the brit - to finish in 14th place. Los, Sekiya, Maier and von Menar rounded up the points paying positions, with Maier winning D Class.

Sunday Report:
Sprint Race:

Autosport wrote:Ludwig wins to take advantage in championship

With C Class up front and most A Class candidates towards the rear of the grid, the WTCM Sprint Race at Spa Francorchamps was going to be a good one. Despite having lead the first lap, pole sitter Phillippe Haezebrouck would fall from 1st on the grid to 12th place by the end of race, scoring 1 single point and 3rd place in C Class - his first class podium in WTCM, in what was a respectable showing for the frenchman in his private BMW E30 M3 prepared by Bavaria Automobile.

Despite that, it was the R32 of Nagasaka that came through early on, chased by the RS500's of Ludwig and Ratzenberger who took the fight to the japanese - Biela's car lasting less than a lap before breaking down due to a suspension failure. The japanese lead until a gearbox failure hit him and ge was stuck in 3rd gear and was out. Ratzenberger took the lead before Ludwig overtook his team-mate, and despite beeing always under pressure from the austrian, held on to take his second win of the weekend and third consecutive win in WTCM - taking a giant leap into the title. Ratzenberger finished just 1 second behind the german in second, with Asch 30 seconds back in 3rd in the leading R32.

Gregg hanged onto a podium place until the final lap, when Asch overtook her. She still got another great result for the Rick Miller Racing Merkur RS500, as she crossed the line in 4th as the leading Independent car, having to hold off a fantastic charge through the field by Geoff Donnelly, who finished in 5th place. Toshio Suzuki was 6th, with Johnny Cecotto beeing the leading C Class car in 7th place - further increasing his championship lead in that class. Leslie forgot yesterday's miserable race to finish in 8th place as the leading B Class car, with Ravaglia in 9th. Manuel Reuter salvaged 3 points from the weekend to finish in 10th place from 45th on the grid, with Hoshino and Haezebrouck rounding up the points paying positions.

D Class saw Helmut Maier take another victory to his name this year.

This is not allowed - don't forget, there was only two update windows, after Kyalami and before Birmingham. No more updates can be asked this season.

Autosport wrote:Reuter and Ravaglia take honours around the Nordschleife

It's the most gruelling track in the world - 25km's of the most difficult surface racing drivers face throughout their lifes. Nicknamed "The Green Hell", the Nordschleife is the crown jewel of the WTCM calendar, and marks the end of the WTCM calendar before the closing event this season, the Bathurst 1000. Track specialists are hired for this occasion only, and local come in hundreds to see racing cars race through the Bavaria hills at over 250kph.

In the first pre-qualifying session of the day, despite having been the Nissan of Roland Asch taking pole position, the Nissan couldn't held the faster RS500's on racetrim - the long Dottinger straight helping the RS500 due to their straightline speed advantage - and some agressive driving over the low-medium speed sections placed Manuel perfectly in the speed of Asch to take the lead in the last lap and hang on for victory. Asch held on for second place, with Ratzenberger 3rd and championship leader Klaus Ludwig in 4th place. Hoshino was 5th, with Castellano 6th, Suzuki 7th, Donnelly 8th, with the Kaliber's of Soper and Rouse rounding up the top 10 - who was split by less than 10 seconds!

In B Class, David Leslie took pole and victory in the race despite a late attempt into the final corners by Leonhard von Gottorp for which the brit had to defend hard to take victory once again in B Class - and take over the championship lead going into the final 3 races of the season from his team-mate Keke Rosberg. Gottorp finished less than a second behind in 2nd, with Traverso in 3rd. Warwick was 4th in the second Audi, with Cleland and Rosberg - who only qualified 12th - in 5th and 6th respectivelly. Francevic finished in 7th place as the leading Volvo, with Borgudd right behind in 8th. Pruett was 9th in the Mitsubishi - once again showing the skills that took him to victory in the Endurance Race last year around here - with Larsen rounding up the top 10.

Just like in B Class, Roberto Ravaglia took pole and victory in the last session of the day - the italian never letting the lead go throughout the entire race. Cecotto put a late charge after having come from 5th on the grid to second by the end - less than a second behind the italian. The fight in the C Class championship seems like it'll be Ravaglia vs Cecotto for this final rounds. Hahne completed the podium for Mercedes-Benz. Ostreich was 4th, with Ragnotti qualifying for the first for a WTCM race in 5th place and leading Renault - who has some good pace around the 'Ring. Baldi was 6th, followed by Laffite, Harvey, the Prince Leopold of Bavaria who makes his annual appareance in WTC at the 'Ring and Marc Hessel who rounded up the top 10.
In D Class, Massimo Sigala dominated the race in that class to take victory ahead of Wolfgang Kudrass and Helmut Maier.

Autosport wrote:Walkinshaw to Introduce New VL Commodore for Bathurst

Walkinshaw Racing have today announced their intentions to enter a new-spec VL Commodore for this year's Tooheys 1000 at Mount Panorama. The Holden Dealer Team has had a disastrous year in the World Touring Car Masters series, having failed to qualify for a main race this season. However, team owner Tom Walkinshaw has high hopes that this new car will deliver improved fortunes for the team.

"There's no doubt this year has been a disaster," lamented Walkinshaw. "We've inherited an utter shambles of an operation, but we've made do with what we've had, and I'm proud to say the new VL Commodore is ready for service. It will feature an all-new engine and improved aerodynamics over its predecessor, and we have no doubt that it will be competitive for Bathurst. We have already received approval from CAMS to run the vehicle, and the team eagerly awaits rolling it out on track."

It's expected that team manager Win Percy will reunite with 1986 Bathurst 1000 winner Allan Grice in one car, while the identify of Jeff Allam's teammate is currently unknown.

Saturday Afternoon Report:
Endurance Race:

Autosport wrote:Ratzenberger takes final lap victory as Ludwig retires

It was 22 laps of the Nordschleife that awaited the drivers - fortunatelly, with dry skies. And what a race it was. Nothing was missing from this race - drama, overtakes, unreliability. All the things that turn touring car racing into one of the best categories in the world.

The race early on was lead by Manuel Reuter, who dominated until he retired from P6 - after he had pit. Castellano, who had pitted earlier, moved into the race lead... until he also retired. The race then turned into the fight between Hoshino and Ludwig, until the R32 also retired as well. Sadly for the Nissan marque, reliability continues to be the main topic, and there are rumours the team are pushing the FIA to allow a reliability upgrade into Bathurst. Ludwig moved into the race, which he kept unti the final lap. A engine failure hit the Zakspeed RS500 and Ratzenberger, who despite not having the pace he needed to win the race, kept his RS500 together and crossed the finish line 45 seconds ahead of the leading B Class car, the USD Toyota of David Leslie, scoring his best result so far in WTCM. Derek Warwick scored Audi's first podium in WTCM by crossing the finish line in 3rd place.

Pole sitter Joachim Winkelhock's crossed the line in 4th place, taking victory in independents as well. Cecotto won C Class from 5th place overall, 6th was the leading Mercedes of Jochen Mass, with Tim Harvey in 7th place. 8th was the Prince Leopold of Bavaria, with Andreas Larsen in 9th and Slim Borgudd rounding up the top 10, and taking pole for the sprint race. Per-Gunnar Andersson was 11th, with John Bowe in 12th place, with Sekiya in 13th place, Los 14th, Heyer 15th, Pruett 16th, Giroix 17th and Lambden scoring the final point in 18th place. Despite the 1989 edition of the Bathurst 1000 being part of the World Touring Car Masters, the organisation of the event still belongs to CAMS - the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport. Despite some rules beeing enforced - just like ballast being a thing due to the championship - some certain aspects of the event, like entries and regulation of drivers entered. And today, CAMS released the following statement regarding the 1989 edition of the event held at Mount Panorama.

"As the 30th running of the Bathurst 1000 race is about to be held in 2 weeks time, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport is to announce that the Ford Sierra RS500 and the Nissan Skyline R32 entered in the World Touring Car Masters championship will get revised before the practice session and be fitted with a device that will limit engine power to 500HP. This came from concerns of the organisation of the event regarding the speed of the R32 and the RS500 around the track, as multiple safety concers were raised during the WTCM season due to Hasemi's, Rouse's and Hoshino's crashes through the season."

Sunday Report:
Sprint Race:

Autosport wrote:Ratzenberger makes it two ouf two at the Nordschleife

Amidst a heavy threat of rain at the Nordschleife - which eventually turned true midway through the first lap - the final sprint race of the 1989 World Touring Car Masters was go with a 1-2 for Larsen Racing System Volvo's on the grid. Andreas Larsen took the early lead, but by the end of the lap, Joachim Winkelhock used the superior straightline speed of his Sierra RS500 to take the lead amist the already heavy falling rain - which saw multiple mistakes come out from drivers, including from the likes of Kazuyoshi Hoshino and Keke Rosberg. By the end of the second lap, the rain was heavy enough most cars decided to come in for the wet tyres. The one who stayed out saw themselves ahead of the field: the order now was Roland Asch, Oscar Castellano, Geoff Donnelly, Marc Hessel and Robbie Francevic.

By the end of the next lap, Ratzenberger had already gone past Francevic and Hessel, and had moved into 4th place, just a few seconds off the leader. He overtook Donnelly into turn 1 down the inside, then took Castellano around the outside at turn 7 and finally overtook Ratzenberger at the chicane entry before the Nordschleife. Ratzenberger then just pulled away and eventually took the win of the race and his second of the weekend. Winkelhock still used his rain tyres to full effect, clearing the cars ahead to finish in 2nd place, almost 15 seconds behind the eventual winner. Asch finished in 3rd place still, more than 30 seconds down - that was the difference between the rain and dry tyres around the 'Ring. Kudos to Roland for keeping the car on the track in those conditions. Warwick almost got Audi's second podium of the weekend, but was 5 seconds short, having cleared Castellano for 4th place in the final sector, leaving the argentinean in 5th place.

6th was the other Phillips of Geoff Donnelly, with Klaus Ludwig recovering to 7th place by the end - setting fastest lap in the process. Marc Hessel was the leading C Class car in 8th place, with Leslie in 9th place. Cecotto rounded up the top 10 in his Prodrive E30 M3, with Francevic and Suzuki also scoring points in 11th and 12th respectivelly.

D Class saw Wolfgang Kudrass beat Helmut Maier and Massimo Sigala to victory.

With this, the championship decider will go down to the Bathurst 1000, with the fight falling between current championship leader Klaus Ludwig on 193 points, 6 more than Ratzenberger's 187. Reuter's still mathematically in it, but considering the rules for Bathurst, he's basically out of the fight for the title.

Now, it's time... to post Bathurst entries.

Like last, I'll run down some specific rules of the event.

Weekend Structure:
-> Pre-Qualifying 1 (A and B Class Cars; dependant on entries)
-> Pre-Qualifying 2 (C and D Class Cars; dependant on entries)
If there is lots of entries, pre-qualifying will get split into 4 races, one for each class.
-> Qualifying (54 cars; top 10 fastest do a top 10 shoot-out for pole position)
-> Race (161 Laps)

Teams and Drivers:
Sign-Up Rules:
-> There will be a 36 car limit for each class. If the car count is low, there will be only 2 PQ races. If it's high, 4
PQ races.
-> Every manufacturer that runs cars in WTCM will be allowed a max of 2 entered cars, while Holden will be allowed 3 cars.
-> Non-Asian privateers can only enter 1 car, while asian based teams can enter 2 cars.

Drivers:
-> Every time needs two drivers: a main driver and a co-driver.
-> Co-Driver will run the PQ races, while the main driver will drive the race.
-> Qualifying for the race will include two hour long sessions: one for the main driver and another for the co-driver.
-> The added times will determine the grid, with the top 10 shoot-out for pole position having a lap from both the main
driver and the co-driver.

Prize Structure:
-> Same as WTCM (only awarded to teams who already ran races this year in WTCM).

A note: a team can enter two different model vehicles for the same team. They just need to write down they are entering two separate car models.

You have two weeks to enter your drivers and teams. Beware of drivers contracts with teams in WTCM as well.

Still quite a few... a lot... of spots remaining. I'll remind to the teams who have all races from Fuji to the Nordschleife, that if the teams don't enter Bathurst, they'll loose all their points automotically in the teams championship and won't get their prize money relative to it.
