Round 11 - German Grand Prix, Hockenheimring, 5th August 1984

Qualifying Results:
Nowhere is pure, unadulterated horsepower more crucial than in amongst the long, fast straights and sweeps of Hockenheim's forests and stadiums.

In a rain-soaked qualifying session, whether through luck, skill, or a good car, Patrick Tambay took pole by nearly four seconds. It's clear the Brabham was no slouch in Germany, with his team-mate Patrese lining-up fifth. In a car that seemed like it would rarely make the top ten wherever it went, the Williams team's choice of paying for the exclusive use of the Porsche V6 turbo was finally rewarded by Steffan Bellof, who started second. Elsewhere at the sharp-end of the grid, it was mostly business as usual; Arnoux and Mansell filled the second row, with Brundle, Prost and Cheever's Tyrrell behind the second Brabham-Renault. Among the other surprises were Nannini's Arrows - the fastest of the BMW-powered cars - qualifying ninth, Lauda and his works Renault making the top ten after a dreary season so far, Winkelhock's Ligier an incredible fourteenth on the grid, and the ATS cars starting sixteenth and eighteenth - sandwiching Piquet's McLaren. Less impressive was a very tentative Didier Pironi, who qualified down in twentieth, and the Tolemans - after their grace in America - almost failing to qualify due to their naturally aspirated DFV engines.

Race Results:
People will surely argue for some time that, had the race gone its full length, Mansell would have caught Tambay and passed him, but this was by-the-by. Patrick Tambay won in Germany, with a marvellous, controlled drive in the fast and reliable Brabham. Mansell himself would settle for second, only nineteen seconds behind. Arnoux found his racecraft could not compare with his team-mate's, Piquet having worked his way-up to third, with an uncharacteristic display of wet weather elegance. The final podium position had looked set to be Bellof's earlier in the race, but his engine blew from the strain of the long straights. A mature drive from Ulsterman John Watson in the powerful, but heavy, ATS-BMW saw him come home in a fine fifth place, and bring the German team's points total up to five. The final point went to the Arrows team, who seemed ready to give-up on 1984 and make the best of next season, and now have a place in the constructor's standings.

Alfa resume engine development
Despite an overtime-ban until the season's conclusion, Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A. have ended the budget freeze of their Formula One programme, and provided adequate funds for development of the 890T V8 turbocharged engine supplied to the works Alfa Romeo team, as well as the Osella and Minardi teams.

The company's press office reported to the media that the decision to halt development of the engine had proved unpopular with fans, and a reduction in volume orders from dealers throughout Italy had been noticed, although the company would not comment on the degree of this sales slump. Alfa were eager to inform existing and potential customers that the budget freeze, enforced after the French Grand Prix, was nonetheless "absolutely and completely necessary."

The opportunity to perform development of the 890T engine is once again available, and the engine's listing - within the 'Engine Development' section beneath the calendar, at the start of the thread - has been re-enabled, to represent this.

Finally, some luck... Arrows will hence spend two D&Ts on the '85 car, and hope our sudden points-scoring form continues to Austria.

Round 12 - Austrian Grand Prix, Österreichring, 19th August 1984

Qualifying Results:
Arnoux taking pole by an incredible second-and-a-half, was a testimony to just how good the McLaren chassis was; whether their car will be this good next season remains to be seen. Tambay followed-up on his win in Germany with a fine second place on the grid. Cheever again performed well above expectations in the Tyrrell, and team-mate Warwick wasn't far behind in seventh. Martini lined his Alfa up in an excellent fourth on the grid, with de Angelis - the quickest of the Ferraris - right behind. Both the Lotus-Renaults started in the top ten, unusually with Brundle starting ahead of team-mate Mansell, but the big surprise was Stefan Johansson, who qualified a superb eight in his over-powered ATS. Alboreto put in a good lap to start tenth, as did Senna in his Williams on the row behind him. Piquet could manage no better than twelfth - some four seconds off the pace of Arnoux. Prost wasn't comfortable on the sweeps, dips, and long curves of Austria, and was easily out-qualified by team-mate Pironi. The Toleman team struggled again with their low-horsepower DFVs, with Boutsen making a rare DNQ. It was a disappointing performance also, from Alessandro Nannini in the powerful Arrows-BMW, who failed to qualify.

DNQ. Roberto Guerrero - RAM-Ford (Pirelli) +11.309
DNQ. Andrea de Cesaris - Minardi-Alfa Romeo (Pirelli) +11.686

Race Results:
It was a magnificent performance from Mansell, who brazenly overtook everything in front him in a Lotus that looked like it was on rails. If you thought Johansson's eighth place on the grid was impressive, took a look at this podium! His brilliant second place finish put the German ATS team ahead of Williams and Renault in the Constructor's Championship. Brundle, although unable to match his team-mate's pace, worked hard to take a well-deserved third place. Cheever struggled with tyre wear as the race went on, and eventually finished fourth. Pironi's careful drive meant he worked his way up to a fine pair of points, only one of which he'd receive. For McLaren, it was a black day, with Piquet gaining little ground off the start line and spinning off in amateur fashion, and Arnoux retiring from the lead with a blown engine. Alboreto's engine failure and Lauda's seventh place was the final straw for Renault, who made an announcement regarding the team's future soon after the race.

Renault pulls-out for 1985
Renault has announced that they will not enter the 1985 Formula One season.

Groupe Renault - which owns the corporate concern of the company's auto manufacture, sporting interests, and shareholding in various worldwide companies - like many road car manufacturers in Europe, has faced considerable quarterly loses in the last couple of years, and have recently invested significant funds in developing and launching their much-lauded Espace model.

The French government-owned conglomerate's public relations department issued a press release on the 20th of August, stating their intent not to provide a budget or works engine for the company's F1 outfit, effectively guaranteeing a Renault team of any description would not be fielded for next season.

CEO George Besse said "This has been a very difficult decision for the company, but we believe our planned changes to the company's sporting subsidiary are in the best interests of both Renault and Formula One.

"This is not the end. Renault is one of the primary automobile manufacturers in the world, and we will maintain a significant presence in the international motorsport community. Should it be in the company's best financial interests, we will return to Formula One at such a time."

Arrows will spend one D&T on next year's car, and the other on Driver Development for Nannini; we'll probably try to keep him for next year, so we need to iron out the occasional DNQ.

Unfortunately, there is only one week 'till the Dutch Grand Prix, so only time for one D&T opportunity.

To all three of you: I will assume your first D&T choice is the one you want, but if not then please feel free to state otherwise. ;)

Oops... Arrows will instead spend its single D&T on next year's car, and apologises for the administrative error.

Those poor workers, who'll all be laid-off! :(

I do feel I owe you an apology for effectively kicking you out of the series, but motorsport is a harsh mistress, and if it makes you feel any better, you're not the only one who'll be facing some tough - and possibly unfair - decisions, soon!

Considering how active you've been and the effort you put into running Renault, I'd be more than happy to have you return to this series with another team. If you want to return at any point (and you forgive me for this ), you're welcome to ask to join the queue. ;)

Pick a D&T opportunity to put your balance into the negative, and the team will be defunct at the end of the year, if you want ;).

Round 13 - Dutch Grand Prix, Zandvoort, 26th August 1984

Qualifying Results:
An all-Italian grid at the front was on display in Holland. Prost beat them all, followed by surprising, but strong hot-laps from Pironi and the young Pierluigi Martini; with Wilson lining-up an excellent fifth, perhaps the Alfa was re-emerging as a competitive car after a dull mid-season. Neither Wilson de Angelis could quite match the pace of the top three, but they were still four tenths ahead of Cheever, who worked his usual magic in the Renault-powered Tyrrell. Senna showed promise in the awkward Williams; the team hoped it would convert into a points-scoring result in the race. So to did the Renault team, who now had little to do but show-up for the final four races of the year, and seemed as demoralised as Michele Alboreto, who was ten places behind his veteran team-mate. It was remarkable to see the difference in domination from the McLarens at this point of the season; in the early races, the red-and-white Honda-powered cars looked unbeatable, but now they struggled to make the top ten. Piquet, in particular, had another rather sloppy qualifying session. Right behind him was an elated Stefan Johansson, fresh from a week-off spent with his girlfriend and a professional open-wheel driving trainer.

Race Results:
It's a win-win-win for Nelson Piquet-Piquet-Piquet! Careful planning and a crafty strategy by Team Briefcase, combined with a furious pace and blinding confidence from the fiery Brazilian, would see him match team-mate Arnoux's points tally, putting the two even in the driver's championship. Tambay drove yet another strong race, finishing on the second step of the podium after starting fifteenth. Cheever followed him across the line, having enjoyed a race where those ahead of him steadily dropped out. Many of the top qualifiers would fail to see the end of the Dutch Grand Prix, with Pironi, Martini, and de Angelis among those who retired. Pole-man Prost saw the finish, but with a misfiring engine. It was something of a swan-song race for Renault, and possibly even for Lauda himself, who was so quick by the end of the race that he nearly overtook Brundle's Lotus. Some way behind, both Williams cars proved highly reliable, if somewhat uncompetitive. Boutsen was largely unrewarded for a tough, plucky performance, scything past others, including making short work of his team-mate, Jones.

Special Event - ATS
After careful analysis, German auto magnate and current F1 engine supplier, BMW, wish to purchase the ATS team.

The ATS team are based near Hockenheim, in Germany. Their driver pairing of Swedish superstar Stefan Johansson and veteran, John Watson, have impressed many in the paddock, and the team - which until recently have looked like perennial tail-enders - have so far scored eleven points this year, including a second-place in Austria, on a tight budget. The two parties share a limited, but jovial, relationship on a business-level, as BMW supply the ATS team with their M12/13 engine on a semi-works basis.

BMW currently supply three teams on the F1 grid with engines: French team Ligier, ATS, and the British Arrows outfit - the latter purely on a customer basis. Ligier's relationship with BMW has been strained over the past year due to the team's frequent poor performance; they have yet to score a championship point, and have failed to qualify on numerous occasions. It is also rumoured that BMW are unhappy with the lack of money the French team has invested in the M12/13 engine development programme.

Rumours of an official BMW Formula One team have circulated for some time, but this is the first public acknowledgement by the company of their intention to fund a genuine works squad - with prioritized use of their engines and considerable monetary backing - which could be a real threat to existing teams in the sport.

BMW Chairman, Eberhard von Kuenheim, said the following, in an interview with the German media: "We do not wish to say too much publicly on the matter. We feel the ATS team have a great deal of potential, and we are very happy to use our financial and engineering resources to build a competitive BMW F1 team, or to continue supplying them with our engines on a customer basis. That is all, and I have no further comment."

* Accept BMW's offer. The ATS team will be renamed 'BMW'. You will receive financial aid, in the form of manufacturer support, from BMW. You will automatically be supplied with BMW's works F1 engines; BMW may have a preference (but not an enforced requirement) for the nationality of one of your driver choices.
* Decline. The ATS team will maintain its identity. As a protest of indignation at your refusal of their offer (and bolstered by your lack of performing any development on the engine via your semi-works deal, this season), BMW will not offer you their works or semi-works engines for 1985, although they are willing to continue selling you engines on a customer basis.

The ATS team are requested to respond to this event.

Arrows will spend one more D&T on next year's car, then throw in the towel for 1984 in this area- we're starting to get a bit short of funds.
