2018 Volant Elf: Iordanou champion

Once upon a time in Southern France, there was an age old tradition. Francophone drivers would go head-to-head in an end of season bash in Le Castellet. The get together was a rite of passage for future Formula 1 drivers. The list reads like a who's who of French Formula 1 - Alain Prost, Jean Alesi, Dider Pironi, Patrick Tambay, Olivier Panis, Érik Comas, Éric Bernard, Paul Belmondo, Olivier Grouillard and Pascal Fabre.

Now, thanks to Voeckler Grand Prix Engineering, and their key lubricants partner Elf, the race is back. This time though, the stakes are higher than ever. The grand prize isn't just glory and money - it's a paid, full season drive with Voeckler GPE's crack AutoReject 3.5 squad.

The grid is capped at 18 cars, so nobody automatically gets a 2 car team, though you can apply for one, as long as your driver line-up is named upfront, rather than with any TBA's. Entries are prioritised by the team owner's existing presence in canon (or rather lack thereof).

The idea is for existing fictional F2, F3, AR 3.5 or AR 2.0 drivers to be entered. You can enter a canon rookie if you really want to, but I guarantee you they will be awful and troll around the back being hopeless. They also must be fictional - RL drivers aren't allowed in 3.5, so no room for them here either!

There's also a restriction when it comes to teams. Now, you can enter a single car with a team name identical to that of the driver, with a nationality to match. However, if you elect to enter a named team (e.g. Voeckler GPE [FRA]), they must belong to one of the following European, Francophone nationalities; France, Monaco, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Andorra. I will also allow Morocco, given its close proximity to Europe.

So, now you've read all the important stuff, here's the entry pro-forma to use. Fields marked with an asterisk are optional;

Code: Select all

Team name*:
Team nationality*:

Driver 1 name:
Driver 1 nationality:
Driver 1 number (2-99):

Driver 2 name*:
Driver 2 nationality*:
Driver 2 number (2-99)*:

Livery (delete as appropriate): Will create own design / Requesting a design
Livery concept*:

And that's it! If your driver is looking for an opportunity at the second highest tier of motorsport, this could be the place for them. Who will take advantage of the golden ticket on offer?

Entries are still open, keep 'em coming. Don't forget you can have a second car if you can find a driver for it.

To make sure everything was running okay, I ran a full distance test race (34 laps, 200km). Hopefully with extra cars it will be more interesting, as it was pretty clean this time around. Two notable incidents came about though, involving a stramash between Recarmier, Iordanou, Martins and Wolf, plus Pavlovic derping all on his own.

This is a Polish MiG-19, but Mikoyan is Russian. Trying to make myself copy it verbatim when I know it's from a non-matching national air force broke my internal circuitry, so I gave up and copied the Soviet MiG 19 design instead. I hope you're okay with that.

As there are still 3 spots left, and as you sort of stated that two driver teams can exist if it doesnt get filled up, can I cheekly stick a request here for a test for Japanese driver Yuka Katayama who would use the number 8 driving for Falik? ;)

Given it's your second rookie entrant, whereas Katayama was an established canon driver, I'm going to put that entry on hold. He can get in if no other driver with canon experience shows up.

Ideally I don't want people entering two rookies at once, so we're down to 1 slot free. If it doesn't get taken in the next 48 hours, I'll just cap the entry list at 17 and get on with it.

With the entry list full, now we wait. Given the number of F2 drivers involved, and the number of crashes they have, I feel it best to wait until their season is over to run the race.

I may run it and keep it archived until it is verified none of the 18 will be unfit to race that weekend.

There are two different liveries mentioned here, rather than just one, and also the idea as this is a one-off is to not ask for anything too difficult. What I can (and will do if you don't say otherrwise) is a more straightforward Red Bull style livery.

2018 Volant Elf: Qualifying Complete

Post by DemocalypseNow »

Iordanou storms to Volant Elf pole

Fotis Iordanou is clearly making up for lost time. Spending most of 2018 on the sidelines, the former AR 2.0 frontrunner has finally found new sponsorship in the form of Metka, and has used it to buy himself a place on the Volant Elf grid.

His new-found Greek financiers are already getting bang for their buck, as the precocious youngster went straight to pole position, a tenth and a half ahead of fellow AR 2.0 graduate Naas Botha - making it a very fresh-faced looking front row for the big event.

There were two big surprises in the session - one positive, and one negative. Antonio Didac Puerta, once a speed demon in regional series back home, struggled to make an impact in European F3 this season, but stunned onlookers by overcoming his more highly-rated team-mate, T.K. Wolf, to take 4th place on the grid. Conversely, Rafael Martins, who currently plies his trade in AR 2.0, and is well known for blowing hot and cold from race to race, suffered an arctic blast of form. His efforts were wayward, and despite being the last driver on track to set a time, managed no better than 13th.

Despite being based in France, and having previously held a reputation for attracting the cream of the crop of young French talent, only three drivers from the host nation were present. Lukas Zuber led the charge for the hometown heroes, lining up in 6th. Rene Recarmier was not far behind in 10th, but relative unknown Emma Le Blan struggled to get to grips with her new machinery, and will start from the last row of the grid, alongside the inept Sandra Yoo.

I think the RNG is in my favor. yet the only way to win is for the race to be a race of attrition. Which i doubt will happen unless the RNG is in my favor :)

2018 Volant Elf // Paul Ricard // Race Results

This race was two months ago, and rFactor auto-deleted the replay from my system, so I can't check what happened during the race anymore, and are mostly reciting things from (sketchy) memory here.

L'Equipe wrote:Iordanou takes comfortable Volant Elf victory

In a turn up for the books, former AR 2.0 youngster Fotis Iordanou stole the show at Paul Ricard for the revival of the decades-old Volant Elf tournament, fending off an early challenge from Belgian F2 driver Alexandre Dorval for the title.

Ioradnou however was lucky that the fastest driver in the race put himself on the back foot from the get-go. Lukas Zuber had a torrid start to the race, dropping from 6th to 12th in the opening two laps, before a dramatic resurgence saw him charge up to second place, and finish less than two seconds behind Iordanou. The French native easily had the pace to take a dominant victory, had it not been for suffering such an awful start.

Rafael Martins was a driver many had tipped for a good performance, after some fast but erratic outings in AR 2.0 this season. He continued to be erratic, but not particularly fast, and found himself mired in the midfield and causing headaches for those around him. Firstly, he squeezed Daniel Bouchard into Emma Le Blan at the end of the back straight, spinning Le Blan out and seeing her drop to second-last position. This was followed up a few laps later by running into Bouchard, sending him wide and dropping seven positions in one corner.

In more positive news, the victory means Iordanou not only wins a trophy, but also a seat for next year with Voeckler-Renault's 2019 AutoReject 3.5 team, where he will partner their well known young talent Mineiro.
