Paddock News

Adrian Campos: “Sergio Canamasas made through a race distance for once”

After the race Adrian Campos stated that Canamasas has indeed worked hard to tone down his aggressiveness. In addition, he said that “Given that this team is in its second year of existence, we can’t afford for our drivers to crash out of the race when presented a chance. This race finish is like a victory for us.”

Heikki Kovalainen: “Finally, the monkey has been off my chest!”

After finishing 10th, and finally putting Carlin on the points table for 2010. Heikki said after the race, “Let’s hope we can squeeze in some more point finishes over time.”

The next stop for the paddock is Monaco, which would be posted in a few days at the earliest.

Paddock News:

Pastor Maldonado: “At least we can party for tonight, we got Lola on the scoreboard!”

After the race, Pastor Maldonado celebrated in the garage with the Lola crew for getting a single point for finishing 10th. This comes after last season when they did score a single point in their return to F1 but otherwise was underwhelming. Still, they are bullish on their prospects of scoring another point, but at least there’s some hope at the Lola factory for once!

Heidfeld will miss the in-season test at Monaco and the next race as a result of concussion protocol after his crash

It was pretty scary indeed, but Heidfeld is being forced to sit out the in-season test at Monaco and the next round as well as he recovers from an accident in the Monaco GP. The good news is that Adrian Sutil will fill his seat until Heidfeld makes a complete recovery.

In the meantime, if you haven’t post upgrade plans yet, now is a good time to do so.

Paddock News:

Fans at Canada: This season isn’t looking that much better than 2009 at the top of the pack

Despite Ferrari failing to win the first race of this season. Ferrari have been on a tear lately. The fans are starting to voice out that the FIA need to do something to spice things up for next season. Since DRS wasn’t possible due to limitations in the game itself. We the FIA, need to come up with something else. One possibility is to introduce a 40% tax at the end of each season to the leftover budgets, something that a couple other series on the forum managed to do with some success. Of course, if there's one thing that we like about this current status of the sport is the fact that the midfield and back marker teams are holding on their own ground. Yet, nothing is finalized for 2011, so stay tuned.

The next round will be posted eventually.

Autosport wrote:Mallya: We are catching up, but tax is not a good idea

After managing to score Force India's best result of the 2010 season to date, including a podium for Lewis Hamilton, Force India's Vijay Mallya was in a confident mood in the post race interview. "I am pleased with the teams performance today - it is testament to the professionalism and ability of both drivers and the team as a whole that after our test session we have once again made large strides and closed the gap to our rivals. We are aware that there is still half a season to go but it is encouraging to see such improvement after a poor start that the guys have all united. We hope to be able to continue this but a big well done to the team thus far"

Asked about possible improvements to the sport in the wake of Ferrari's continuing domination, Mallya was neutral, but appreciated the problem that faced the fans. "Its a hard one to solve" he told Autosport "If a team builds a good car from the start then with such limited testing its hard for other teams to catch up. However Ferrari have the resources to maintain a testing schedule anyway so even this would not be much of a deterrent."

Mallya was against the budget cut idea though "a 40% tax sounds good but Ferrari have the biggest budget anyway. If anything it could help cement their place as they could just up offers for the best drivers and spend more on their cars than other teams to remove the threat of the tax. Meanwhile, other teams on the midfield or below may be unable to afford a consistent campaign and will be penalised for trying to be prudent"

If its any help KL-Racer, I had a similar problem running my series when one team lucked all their car building rolls. Its not so bad if its a midfield or backmarker but when its a team with the best driver and engine its very noticeable and if they can maintain their team then its very hard to break without shredding the rulebook. I'm intrigued by any ideas anybody else has though.

OH and an Aero and KERS for the next test for Force India please!

Round 8 Donnington Park

After Silverstone lost the British GP due to the mere fact that the 2010-present layout is not available for Grand Prix 2 still. We are off to Donnington park instead, holding their second ever F1 race. Note for your historical buffs out there, the first GP at this track was held back in 1993 and the now legendary Ayrton Senna won the race after a memorable and dynamic first lap in an inferior McLaren. And speaking of McLaren, their hopes are down in the dumps but can they score a point for once? And elsewhere around the grid, there are still plenty of spots to be determined because after this race the Pre-Q lists will be reset according to the bottom 10 teams of the team’s championship for the next four races. As of now, Sauber-BMW is on the bubble in 10th but Carlin, Lola and Caterham are looking to unseat them. So, let’s see what will happen to finish off the first half of 2010.

Pre-Q Results

1 Luca Filippi 1:09.957
2 Heikki Kovalainen +0.145
3 Rubens Barrichello +0.333
4 Nico Hulkenberg +0.647
5 Timo Glock +0.798
6 Sergio Canamasas +0.806
7 Pastor Maldonado +0.844
8 Sergio Perez +0.920

14 Karun Chandhok +1.298
15 Paul di Resta +1.380
16 Charlie Kimball +1.654
17 Sam Bird +1.963
18 Brendon Hartley +1.997
19 Neel Jani +2.032
20 Lucas Di Grassi +2.190

Some surprises here, Perez barely made into Qualifying. While Hulkenberg in the underpowered DAMS, also made it in.

25 Timo Glock +1.739
26 Sergio Perez +1.748
DNQ
27 Jaime Algersauri +1.812
28 Sergio Canamasas +2.439

Wow! Hulkenberg made it in for DAMS, giving FantometteBR something to cheer about for once, but at the expense of Algersauri in the second red bull. I am guessing that Ataxia is seriously thinking of a driver change for the second half of the season? More on that in Paddock News section but let’s get racing!

Race Summary

On Lap 3, Pastor Maldonado crashed out. On Lap 27, Raikkonen DNF’ed and a few laps later Barrichello retired from 10th with Engine failure. Lap 49, Glock also didn’t finish. A couple laps later, Klien made an early exit. With a handful laps left, Buemi crashed out and Grosjean retired with a late KERS failure. With just 4 laps left, Alonso retired while running in the points. On the very next lap, Heikki DNF’ed. In the end, it was a surprise and somewhat improbable win by Mark Webber.

Paddock News:

Helmut Marko: We are looking seriously at replacing Algersauri for the second half of the season.

With Red Bull looking for the next step forward, Helmut Marko has decided to look for a replacement for Jaime Algersauri. But with one problem, there isn’t that much choices left in the driver market. Giedo Van Der Garde is one possibility, if they decided to go for extra money. However, they might as well try to look for a young driver in the junior ranks. Time will tell if they decide to replace Algersauri or not.

The future of the British GP is no longer in limbo! Donnington Park inks a deal to host the British GP until 2013.

Well, after a doozy of a British GP at Donnington. The FIA was eager to deal with Donnington park’s owners over an extension to host the British GP. They ultimately agreed to a 3-year deal to host the British GP and hopefully that would give enough time for someone to recreate the current Silverstone layout for us to race on for Grand Prix 2.

The new Purpose built F1 circuit in India is under construction but there’s no F1 race coming in the immediate future.

After Donnington Park’s new deal was made official, India’s F1 race hopes for the near future are slim to none. They were considering a 3-year deal to host F1 but various issues delayed their decision so much that they will not host a F1 race in 2011. Instead, the construction group behind the project has agreed to use this new track as an alternate test venue for the 2011 pre-season tests. So, it’s not entirely hopeless.

The next race will be up probably by Thursday. In the meantime, in regards of the 40% tax for 2011, I decided to not go forward on that idea. Maybe it's something to do with the reliability RNG parameters that we were been using since the beginning of this series? Anyways, I still want any feedback regarding 2011, so feel free to post!

Still, Race Pace and KERS for Caterham. We're as fast as possible but we can't seem to be getting any points whatsoever...

Round 9 Hungaroring

After looking at the team’s standings after the halfway point of the season. No teams got promoted out of Pre-Q. As a result, the Pre-Q lists will remain the same for these next four races. So, next up is the Hungaroring, a tough track to overtake on, but it could spring some surprises because it’s not as dependent on outright power.

Pre-Q Results

1 Rubens Barrichello 1:17.866
2 Heikki Kovalainen +0.483
3 Kamui Kobayashi +0.718
4 Benoit Truleyer +0.752
5 Luca Filippi +0.766
6 Sergio Perez +0.804
7 Karun Chandhok +0.999
8 Timo Glock +1.198

Both McLarens making it through to Qualifying, is a small step forward. But the biggest one of them all is Kamui Kobayashi in the Stefan GP finally making it through to a Qualifying session for the first time ever.

Pretty standard fare, except for one big note. Kobayashi made onto the grid finally. This would be Stefan GP’s first race appearance ever. Good job guys from Serbia!

Race Summary

Our first DNF came on Lap 20 with Klien stopping on the front straight with transmission failure. However, this proved to be the only DNF of the whole race. With 25 cars finishing the race there was many close moments but surprising that no accidents happened given the tight nature of this track. When it’s all said and done, Vettel won.

Zoran Stefanonic: “Even though this race result was slightly disappointing, we are making progress”

After the race, Zoran Stefanonic and his driver Kamui Kobayashi was finally relieved that they got that monkey off their backs and made it to a starting grid and finishing the race last among the 25 finishers. Regarding the car, Kobayashi said, “This race brought some useful data about drivability for a long stint, that’s for sure.” Regarding their hopes for next season, Zoran simply said “We are still hopeful, but then again fate can change for the worse.”

Rubens Barrichello: “We are finally on the score board!”

After missing out on stepping on the podium with a 4th place finish. Barrichello said that this car was almost about to break down towards the final few laps but we managed to finish it in one piece. Now we can focus on building on that finish for the in-season test coming up.

Speaking of which, we have the third in-season test coming up next. If you haven’t posted upgrades yet. Now it’s a good time to do so.
