Round 1 Melbourne

Okay, sorry about that lengthy delay. A new season is finally upon us. What can Ferrari do for an encore after they were met with little resistance in 2009 on their way to the first perfect season in F1 history? How about Robert Kubica, Lewis Hamilton and Force India, can they get back to winning races for once? Can McLaren be relevant again? These questions and many more will be answered over the 16 races. But for now, we are off to Melbourne for the season opener.

DNQ
27 Ho-Pin Tung +2.848
28 Sam Bird +2.929

WOW! Brawn GP got a pole position? Yes, that’s not a typo folks, Brawn GP and Webber managed to snap Ferrari’s dominance in Qualifying from the get-go in 2010. However, Ferrari still managed to qualify 2nd and 3rd. M. Schumacher’s decision to sign with Euskadi so far looks like it was a good sleeper deal, he managed to qualify 5th. Force India was a huge disappointment for their first Qual. session of 2010, 9th and 14th just isn’t going to cut it. Karun Chandhok continues to surprise in the USF1, this time they finally made it on the grid for the first time ever. McLaren, still continues to barely hold on, 24th and 25th on the grid, just isn’t acceptable for any prospective buyer. Ho-Pin Tung and Sam Bird were the two unlucky ones to be DNQ’ed. For Tung, he better be looking over his shoulder because Timo Glock will probably deserve a few shots at the second race seat at Carlin. As for Bird, he can only hope to try harder next time.

Race Summary

On Lap 5, Pantano’s race ended suddenly with an engine blowup. On Lap 29, Massa first race to defend his WDC ends with suspension failure. On Lap 46, Button’s race ended early as well with an engine meltdown. In the end, Webber gets Brawn GP’S first win ever. In 2nd, is Alonso in the Honda, and Vettel has to settle for 3rd. M. Schumacher makes it up to 4th in a solid debut with Euskadi. Lotterer managed to finish 5th in the other Brawn GP. Klien is 6th in the second Honda. Hamilton ended up 7th, Rosberg finished 8th in the Red Bull-Honda, which would be a big boost for the staff after failing to finish with any points in 2009. Ralf Schumacher manages to get a couple points for Mercedes and getting the final point is Kimi, for Sauber-BMW.

Race Results

1 Mark Webber 1:45:54.580
2 Fernandon Alonso +28.631
3 Sebastian Vettel +29.229
4 Michael Schumacher +43.370
5 Andre Lotterer +1:15.129

Paddock News:

Karun Chandhok: "I was more than pleased with the USF1 car, a few points are definitely possible if I try hard enough"

After the race, Chandhok said to the press that he was so shocked that USF1 ended up with a way better car than he was originally expected. Ken Anderson also was shocked adding that "last year was almost a total loss for us, because we didn't realize that KERS was worth the extra money. So for 2010, we decided to build the car around the KERS unit and hope that we can actually make a starting grid for once, I guess worst case our mission has been accomplished.

Timo Glock: Come on now, let's get serious here, I can do way better than Tung did!

After settling in the reserve role at Carlin, Timo Glock wasn't pleased with Ho-Pin Tung not qualifying the Carlin. Certainly, I can probably get that car on the grid, if given the chance!

McLaren-PURE's PR department: "We are desperate for a new owner to take over the day-to-day operations."

After yet another disappointing season opener, McLaren is actively looking for someone that can bring back the legendary team from this precarious performance over the last year or so. Said the unnamed PR member, I honestly think our problem is not the drivers, but it's the god damn engine that we have after we ended our relationship with Mercedes"

Ok, so I actually did something useful for once?

Anyways, I'll go for Reliability and Aero for testing.

I may also quickly add that I have my concerns for the new testing rules, as people can simply pack all of their testing in at one end of the season, meaning that if you do your tests at the start of the season, you get more of an advantage from someone who waits, and I don't believe that is how the system should work. As of now I dont have a suggestion to change the rules to something for fair, though.

Okay, after seeing this, you bought up an excellent point. This I can definitely see some issues with. I am certainly willing to revert back to the 2009 way of doing upgrades, problem is that in 2009 I only did three In-season tests as a whole group after rounds 5, 10 and 15.

So, with that in mind, here's the proposed change. Five in-season tests will be held, as a whole group after Rounds 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15. You can only post upgrades after the races mentioned are done. You can still either decided to do one or two areas, or double up in one area. Costs will remain the same. What you guys think of this proposed change? Is it better in terms of fairness?

I'm happy with it, although I don't see the point of having a test after Race 15, considering there is only 1 race after the test. Perhaps lengthen it out to 3, 6, 10 & 13?

Good question. the answer will be yes, you sure can do that.

As of now, Mercedes are in 9th in the teams title. Recall that the pre-q lists are going to be adjusted after every 4 races. So, if after round 4 if Mercedes are still in the top 10 in the current team standings, then you don't have to go through pre-q for the next 4 races of the season. Of Course, it's your decision whether to do the swap or not.

And speaking of the next round, I have one week free from work, because of the spring break. Hopefully, I can post the next round later today. Stay tuned!

Round 3: Shanghai

Just as you guys thought I forgot about this series. I’m back again. If the first two races are any indication of what’s to come, we are in for a lot closer season than last year! The next race is from Shanghai, where the long back straight is asking for a lower than normal downforce setting but how much can the drivers afford to take off and still navigate the corners? In other news, Timo Glock will be in the second Carlin for the time being, replacing Ho-Pin Tung. And Will Power will try to qualify for a F1 race in the Mercedes, replacing Jerome D’Ambrosio.

Pre-Q results

1 Nico Rosberg 1:35.964
2 Sebastien Buemi +0.004
3 Ralf Schumacher +0.254
4 Pastor Maldonado +0.335
5 Vitantonio Liuzzi +0.344
6 Rubens Barrichello +0.713
7 Luca Filippi +0.755
8 Paul Di Resta +0.764
DNPQ
9 Will Power +0.867
10 Sakon Yamamoto +0.962
11 Jose Maria Lopez +0.969
12 Jaime Algersauri +1.130
13 Nico Hulkenberg +1.131
14 Karun Chandhok +1.171
15 Vitaly Petrov +1.592
16 Kamui Kobayashi +1.717
17 Luiz Razia +2.044
18 Neel Jani +2.078
19 Brendon Hartley +2.424
20 Lucas Di Grassi +2.710

Oh so close, for Will power, but he was the first one to DNPQ.

Qualifying Results

1 Sebastian Vettel 1:35.012
2 Felipe Massa +0.197
3 Mark Webber +0.246
4 Michael Schumacher +0.371
5 Andre Lotterer +0.749
6 Fernando Alonso +0.789
7 Giorgio Pantnao +0.873

Will Power: F1 is a different challenge that's for sure

After being the first one to be DNPQ in China, Will power was pleasantly surprised about the grip level of these cars after spending most of his career in Indy cars. However, he also said that his driving technique needed some in-session adjustments to compensate for the increased downforce and cornering speeds. Otherwise, he was quite satisfied with the Mercedes and was thankful for the team to give him a shot at F1.

If you haven’t posted your upgrade plans for the first in-season test yet, now it’s your time to do so.

USF1 will try for Quali pace and Aero in the 1st test. If possible we would also like to try out Charlie Kimball in place of Razia.

Paddock News:

Sergio Canamasas: “I was very shocked about my lap time!”

If this was a real qualifying session, he would be good enough to participate in a GP. But since this was a test session, caution would have to be taken. After the test was done, Adrian Campos was surprised that he managed to turn in a solid lap time, but he is still a little worried about his reputation as a “crash bot” in the races.

Charlie Kimball: “It was surprising that the relative grip level of this USF1 machine is very high.”

Well, after spending time in IZOD Indycars, he became the second Indycar driver to switch from Indy cars to F1 this season alone. His impressions? He said the following after the test, “Really surprising that the relative grip level of this car is very high despite being a backmarker car that I was piloting today. Hopefully, I can successfully make the grid for the next race in South Korea.”

The next round from the brand-new Yeongham circuit in South Korea will be posted either later tonight or tomorrow, let’s hope!

Round 4 Yeongham

The F1 paddock goes into Yeongham, which is a purpose-built circuit that also runs through a newly-established high-tech resort town in South Korea. The city itself is fitting for a F1 race, utilizing the latest in cutting-edge technologies to create a futuristic setting. Combine that with the ocean next to the track, and we have the makings of a bold weekend. Back to the track itself, it’s a typical compromise track along the lines of Tilke-domes and lots of runoff area at some parts, but at other portions, the walls are extremely close to the track, similar to Monaco.

This is also an important race not only for teams currently looking at being forced to Pre-Q, such as McLaren, Williams and Carlin. But also for teams looking to get out of Pre-Q, such as Caterham, Manor, Red Bull and Mercedes.

After this race, we will know for sure who’s going to be forced to go through Pre-Q for the next four races of the season. Remember that the bottom 10 teams in the current teams’ standings will have to go through pre-q.

Let’s get this one started shall we, and don’t forget the BBQ and the K-Pop concert afterwards!

Pre-Q results

1 Nico Rosberg 1:40.802
2 Sebastien Buemi +0.229

Group Lotus Management: “Our first year is not going to plan.”

After Buying out the remains of the Renault Works team, Group Lotus over the course of the last few months has failed to switch engine suppliers from Renault, in addition they missed out on all of their driver targets, and they still need a permanent manager to take over day-to-day operations. Despite all of this, they realized that they have to can this year and focus on next season.

McLaren and Williams: “We all know that we don’t want to be forced to Pre-Q but what can we do?”

After yet another disappointing appearance in the race. McLaren and Williams has officially fallen into having to Pre-Q for the next four races. Being at this junction is simply unacceptable for both of them, who are long standing powerhouses in the sport.

The next race could be posted next weekend.

Autosport wrote:Mallya: Great team improvement but we must keep pushing

Force India owner Vijay Mallya was clear on his opinions regarding Force India's mediocre start to the 2010 season. In 2009 they were the only team to get anywhere close to Ferrari, but in 2010 they have found themselves fustrated by a lack of raw pace and an underdeveloped car due to the stress of 2009 which has seen multiple teams outpace them. However, the signs at the first in-season test and an improvement in pace in the Chinese GP offer some hope that the season may noy yet be a write off.

"As a team we were all dissapointed with the cars performance relative to our rivals" Mallya was quoted "but all credit to the engineers they have kept their heads up and worked tirelessly to find the cause of the cars problems and have succeeded in rectifying some of the issues. The drivers have also been exemplary in doing their best with what they have and presenting valuable feedback."

"However, we know that although we have closed the gap, we cannot stop now and must continue as a team to all strive to overcome these unexpected hurdles, as other constructors will also be making improvements" Mallya warned "We cannot afford to take our foot off the throttle"

Asked about driver performance specifically, Mallya was brief "Lewis (Hamilton) has been pushing as hard as always and we cannot fault him and was unlucky with some technical issues in the last race. Robert (Kubica) needed time to settle in but as seen in China is now looking more comfortable in both car and team. Hopefully we will be able to capitalise further in the next race"
