Last season alternative championship

Post by Bleu »

This is another championship, built around drivers who drove their last season in F1 each year. Of course with newer seasons there are possibility of comebacks, but when I reach 2014, the eligible drivers are Bianchi, Chilton, Gutierrez, Kobayashi, Lotterer, Magnussen, Stevens, Sutil and Vergne taking account the current situation. Drivers are eligible regardless they died/seriously injured, retired on their own terms or failed to get further drives.

Driver's last year is taken from the participation to the event.

I also consider that driver has to be classified to get any points. So in case of race where all eligible drivers retire, no result is given.

1950
Image
Raymond Sommer 8 (1 win, 4 retirements)
Cuth Harrison 8 (1 win, 2 retirements)
Geoff Crossley 8 (1 win, 1 retirement)
Nello Pagani 8 (1 win)
Charles Pozzi 8 (1 win)
Dorino Serafini 8 (1 win)
David Hampshire 6 (1 2nd)
Joe Fry 4 (1 3rd)
Clemente Biondetti, Leslie Johnson, Eugene Martin and Alfredo Pian failed to score.

The first race of the championship saw three drivers finishing. Cuth Harrison won his home event. In the remaining five races, only one driver finished and in each case it was different driver! Raymond Sommer (who died just after the season) takes the title on virtue of participating most races.

GBR - Cuth Harrison
MON - Raymond Sommer
SUI - Nello Pagani
BEL - Geoff Crossley
FRA - Charles Pozzi
ITA - Dorino Serafini

1951
Image
Consalvo Sanesi 19 (2 wins, 1 4th)
Pierre Levegh 16 (2 wins)
Guy Mairesse 10 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Luigi Fagioli 8 (1 win)
Eugene Chaboud 6 (1 2nd)
Brian Shawe-Taylor 6 (1 2nd)
No points: Toni Branca, Philip Fotheringham-Parker, Aldo Gordini, Georges Grignard, John James, Juan Jover, Joe Kelly, Henri Louveau, Ken Richardson

SUI - Consalvo Sanesi
BEL - Pierre Levegh
FRA - Luigi Fagioli
GBR - Consalvo Sanesi
GER - Pierre Levegh
ITA - no result
ESP - no result

Different season compared to first one. Sanesi raced four Grand Prix's and scored points in three. This was enough for the title.

GER - Rudi Fischer
NED - Jan Flinterman

Easy title for Bonetto who died in Mexico after the season. He started his winning streak in the 2nd half so early on it looked a bit closer.

No doubt 2008 will be COULTHARDWINSLOL given that only him and the Super Aguris will be eligible. Only Australia and Bahrain would not be Coulthard wins, Sato winning at Melbourne due to covering more distance, whilst Davidson will win at Bahrain.

After Spain, DC is obviously the winner due to being the only driver on the grid.

Covering more distance?
The first post says "in case of race where all eligible drivers retire, no result is given.".

Note to self: read the whole OP first.

It'll still be COULTHARDWINSLOL though

The many drivers winning races here and then dying gives a bit of an uncomfortable feeling to this championship. But i guess i could've seen that one coming.

I imagine that this will continue throughout the '50s, '60s and '70s but will be a lot rarer in the '80s, '90s, '00s and '10s.

As an aside, I imagine that 1976 could have gone to Lauda had the Nurburgring crash had a different result. And Ayrton Senna will not be classified in 1994.
