Infinite Improbability Drive of the Race - 2014 Abby Dabby

Post by Shizuka »

based on the assumption that, at any moment in time, there is a non-zero probability that even the slowest, most inexperienced and least reliable of underdogs might win the race. That under every rock, there might be a gold nugget. This is the award for that first podium that we all celebrate, for the overtake no-one was expecting, for JEV's first win. This is the award, in short, for the driver or team that makes you go "Woah! Where did THAT come from?!".

Just remember: this is a feel-good award, that will focus on nothing but track action.
Usual rules: everyone gets two votes. First vote is worth 10 points, the second 6.

Post your results until the 28th November

My nominations:
1. STEVENS! :D
2. Rosberg for keeping it going.

1. Will Stevens - For what might be his only F1 start in his career, he acquitted himself really well. And he got the car to the flag.

2. Nico Rosberg - For doing what Hammy didn't do at Spa, taking a crippled car to the finish. He gets some sympy from the people.

1.Will Stevens--For a driver who I had no clue of who he was until Q2, he did impressively for a first race.

2.Nico Rosberg--Made me cry. Does not happen often. Happened just now.

Massa: Giving some good unlikely moments pursuing Hamilton at the end.

Ricciardo: Surely a Champion in the making whenever Red Bull recovers the engine deficit.
Colin Kolles on F111, 2011 HRT challenger: The car doesn't look too bad; it looks like a modern F1 car.

1- Nico Rosberg
I cried when his car broke down, I cried when he said he wanted to finish the race. This was sad. And not a deserving way to lose a title.

2- Will Stevens
Good stuff mate, good stuff.

Honorable Mention to Felipe Massa

1) Stevens - Not a bad drive for his F1 debut.
2) Ricciardo - He did a great drive after starting from the pit lane, really.

1) Felipe Massa; worked really hard to get that 2nd place. Hats off to the guy.
2) Will Stevens; not only did he make it into F1 with a team presumed dead, he also finished and made little to no errors over the weekend.

1. Stevens - should smash this award. Not as much as a scratch to the car the whole weekend from the driving aspect. For a dèbutant, that's fantastic.

2. Rosberg - Fantastic just to finish. Shows he has a high amount of intelligence. Certainly showing that he's not a hammerhead.

1. Daniel Ricciardo - This guy is a goddamn magician, I swear.

2. Will Stevens - Didn't really rate him, but he's put in a very respectable weekend. Made the most of his opportunity, wouldn't mind seeing him back next year.

1) Daniel Ricciardo: From last to 4th, leaving Vettel far behind once again.

2) Force India: 6th and 7th after starting outside of top 10. They just seem to be able to get it together in races more often than not and this race was no exception.

1. Caterham in general - the fact they just managed to be there was quite a feat.
2. Massa - I thought he was in with a shout for the win up until, say, 5 laps from the end.

Jenson Button -- Great way to end a F1 career. :\

Struggling to think of another one. This race was too predictable for a second nomination.

1. Caterham - Actually weren't that anonymous, certainly not to the same level as Sauber. Also, that moment between Stevens and Alonso!

2. Felipe Massa - Gutted he didn't win, but still an amazing performance, particularly in that last stint.

I may not participate much in these votes, but I wonder if Lewis noticed which car that was in front of him, almost two laps down, as he took the chequered flag.

Top banana, Will Stevens. If that does turn out to be your only race you'll already have had a more successful shot at it than some of our favourite rejects of years past. And isn't that what this place is all about?

1. Felipe Massa: Almost managed to beat the clearly superior Mercedes! I hope he will finally end his win drought next year.
2. (shared, 2 points for each) Caterham F1 Team: Against all odds, they managed to make it to Abu Dhabi! They even seemed relatively competitive at times and Stevens' defending was one of the best moments of the race.
Daniel Ricciardo: Great recovery, almost did what Vettel managed a couple of years ago, this time in a worse car.
Nico Rosberg: I have found him arrogant at times but this time he showed very good sportsmanship both on and off the track.

I'm nominating The Hulk as nobody's mentioned him yet - even with his 5s penalty and being behind in the first stint, he managed to beat his teammate which I was quite impressed by, though the team as a whole were impressive.

2nd vote goes to......Massa for getting that close to the race win.

Agree about the hulk. Someone mentioned FI before too, but i think it goes more to the hulk for finishing 6th even after a penalty.

1. Massa for the start and the chance of a win
2. Hulk

HM to Ricciardo, from pit lane last to 4th

1. Will Stevens. For someone who i believe finished outside the top-3 in FR3.5, he aquitted himself very well. Plus the defending from Alonso gave me a smile. Didn't make a mistake all weekend and did better than most expected.

2. Nico Rosberg. That was such a heartbreaking moment hearing him tell the team he wanted to finish the race even though the electrics were shot. A lot of pride in that one.

Force India - For somehow nearly beating McLaren with a car that wasn't that quick.

Caterham - For managing to get there and almost getting 2 cars home.

1)Felipe Massa: So close, yet so far... But the fact that he put pressure on the all conquering Mercedes at the end, shows that he still have the need for speed. Hopefully, he''l fight for the title next year.

2)Will Stevens: Not only he got to the flag at his first stint at F1, but he made Fernando Alonso and Ferrari look slow on straight line on a Caterham, and that's priceless.

Honorable mentions to Sergio Pérez (he beat K-Mag on the WDC table, so mission accomplished), and Williams (they deserved a win)

The Clash of the Titans Award goes to Lewis Hamilton: He got Nico in the first corner, and with that, the championship was over

1) Will Stevens: Impressive run from him, keeping it clean and not embarrassing himself one bit.

2) Nico Rosberg: Showed resolve in the face of adversity; kept going even when there was nothing at stake but pride. Pride is what he should be feeling, despite not taking the championship - he did, after all, run Hamilton very close and was as unlucky in this race as Hamilton had been in others.

Honourable Mentions: Daniel Ricciardo - not bad, considering he started from the pit lane; Felipe Massa - came close to overhauling Hamilton for the race victory.

1. Will Stevens. Nobody ever really expected him to make F1, and he didn't disgrace himself considering the circumstances.
2. Jenson Button. I will be sad if that is the last we ever see of him in F1

1. Jenson Button - Really looked like he was fighting for his career. He was quite simply much stronger than Magnussen and put in another performance beyond the car's ability.

2. Will Stevens - Took all of one race to look more professional at the wheel than Ericsson has done at any moment this season.

Plenty of good performances, but I will settle for:

1. Ricciardo - 4th from the pit lane? In a car with a significant straight-line speed deficit. Enough said.
2. Massa - didn't put a foot wrong and looked like a contender for the win.

Notable (albeit very different) performances by Button and Stevens, and while not strictly IIDOTR material I was very impressed by the sportsmanship of Hamilton and Rosberg after the race.

1) Nico - very moving moment when he radioed in wanting to finish the race.
2) Ricciardo - didn't need two safety cars to get within shouting distance of the podium.

HM - Crowd funding, Massa, Button. I'll miss him.

2. Nico Rosberg: Refused to give up when others didn't.

Massa: Close, but no cigar.
