So this is it. Using NHL 07, I'm going to simulate a couple of charity ice hockey matches where PMMF drivers and other personalities face off against each other. The matches will be simulated on my trusty ol' PS2 and streamed live. Even though the game has injuries, for fairness' sake they won't have any effect on the racing ability of the participating active drivers.

Anyway, first we need players. And lots of them. The bare minimum an ice hockey squad needs is 20 players (12 forwards, 6 defensemen and 2 goaltenders), and preferrably at least one reserve (just in case a serious enough injury in the first match prevents participation in the second one). So that's over 40 players in total, and as it'll take some time to both accumulate that amount as well as for me to make the players in the game, I'm opening the entry process immediatedly.

Right, time to get on this again.

To encourage more people to enter, here's some basic hockey terms to help people understand what means what before entering.

The basic objective of the game is to use a hockey stick to maneuvre a piece of rubber, known as a puck, behind the goaltender (aka goalie/goalkeeper) to score a goal.

Handedness: refers to how a player holds the stick. A player with "left" handedness holds his right hand near the top and his left hand near the bottom of the stick, and the blade of the stick is also to the left of the player. "Right" handed players are vice versa, of course. The blade is curved slightly based on the handedness to make it more spoon-like, which helps control the puck. As for the goalies, the handedness not only decides on which hand the goalie wears his glove but also the side on which his stick's blade is (by default).

Standard player positions in the rink

Ideally, left wingers and left defensemen should be of the "left" handedness while right wingers and right defensemen should be of the "right" handedness, although this is not always possible.

Player roles
NHL 07 has the following player roles, which are automatically determined based on the player's skill points:

Sniper: a forward who excels at scoring goals through superior shot accuracy.
Dangler: a forward who excels at scoring goals by performing various dekes to confuse the opposition.
Power forward: a forward whose main purpose is to intimidate the opposition and defend his side of the rink by checking hard and sometimes fighting.
Playmaker: a forward who rarely scores goals himself, but instead creates good scoring chances for his team with great passing.
Offensive defenseman: a fast defenseman who actively participates in the offense, even at the risk of reduced defense in the case of a counter attack.
Defensive defenseman: a slower defenseman who stays back to ensure that there's always someone to defend against a surprise counter attack, and often has more mass and checking capability to fulfill this role better than his offensive counterpart.

Goalies can be either stand-up of butterfly: stand-up goalies try to catch the puck in an upward position, leaving the lower area of the goal exposed, while butterfly goalies do the opposite.

Wut r all those weird skill names?

Checking: for fans of other ball sports, this is pretty much tackling. Basically, the act of attempting to take the puck away from the opposition, within the limits of the rules, by using your body or the stick. One example is poke check, where the player uses his stick to push the puck out from the other player's control.
Passing: the act of moving the puck to another player of the same team.
Slap shot: a powerful shot where the stick is first raised high backwards, then forwards to gain momentum before hitting the puck. Quite inaccurate but powerful.
Wrist shot: a less powerful shot where the player only moves his stick forward to send the puck flying. Much more accurate than the slapshot, but also less powerful.
Balance: how well the player can keep upright. A player with poor balance is easy to bring down by checking.
Intensity: how well the player can focus in the closing stages of the game.
Faceoff: best described here. In other words, a very important skill for centres.
Deking: any action of an attacking player which aims to fool the opponent in manner which allows the attacking player to get past the opposition.
5-Hole: the area between the legs of a goalie. A greater skill in this are reduces the chances of a goal being scored there.
Rebound control: a rebound occurs when the puck deflects off the goalie and is still playable. A greater skill in this area reduces the chances of rebounds occuring.

Various other stuff

Lines: the players are organised in lines, with four forward lines (each with a centre, left winger and right winger), three defense lines (each with a left and right defenseman) and specialised lines for penalty kill and power play. There's also a "hero line", consisting of the best players and intended for use in the closing stages of the game to ensure a win.
Penalties: a player can be sent to the penalty box for various offenses. In NHL 07, penalties vary between minor (two minutes), major (five minutes, only from fighting) and being sent off for the rest of the game (for fighting too much!). Minor penalties result in the offending team being forced to play with one less player on the ice (i.e they are short handed) while the opposing team is on power play. Every team has two specific penalty kill and power play lines that consist of the players considered best in this role.

I added the current amount of players in the opening post, divided into the different player positions. As you can see, we've almost covered all goalie positions while defensemen are still sorely lacking.

Right, I'm not going to give up with this despite the apparent lack of interest. I'm removing all restrictions, i.e. you can even create a character for this purpose if you wish. You only need to enter the player's name, nationality and preferred play position and role (check this post for them). Please note that we already have a full quota of goaltenders, so we only need forwards and defensemen now.

After that is done I'll choose the two team managers who'll get to decide each team's stats (name, city, lineups etc.). So I went through all jersey numbers that have been picked at the moment, and found the following clashes:

Florian Grünewald is using #77, which was already picked by Mirko Bosevic earlier.

Since the players will eventually be split into two teams, two players using the same jersey number won't become an issue unless these players end up in the same team. Because of this I'd prefer if the owners of the three aforementioned players picked a backup number which can be used.
