No one really had the advantage in the early season, with seven different drivers winning the first seven races. Then, Fernando Alonso suddenly won three races on the trot and established himself in the championship lead, though he was not very comfortable in that spot. Sebastian Vettel scored podiums regularly, keeping himself within range. He capitalised on Alonso's null score in Belgium caused by Romain Grosjean, then began a four-race winning streak in Singapore that proved lethal to Alonso's title hopes. With a victory in Austin, Vettel sealed his sixth and seventh world titles. Alonso still walked away with a greater amount of podiums, showing his regularity throughout the year.
Of course, there were pleasant surprises. Romain Grosjean scored two podiums and Räikkönen five, including a resounding victory in Abu Dhabi, scoring lap points in every race and race points in all bar Brazil. Nico Rosberg scored his maiden victory in China, but aside from second place in Monaco, he failed to keep up the momentum, though still handily beating the finally retiring Michael Schumacher.
Pastor Maldonado was far more consistent this year, scoring race points on multiple occasions and lap points almost every time, thoroughly beating Bruno Senna. However, it was his unexpected victory in Spain ahead of Alonso that was his standout performance, and was better remembered than other giant-killing performances. The Sauber drivers each scored a podium, Pérez third in Malaysia and Kobayashi in Japan, being the Japanese driver's third career podium. Hülkenberg, after a difficult 2010 season, subsequent year off and tough start to the season, showed his true colours in the season's second half, comprehensively outpacing Paul di Resta and scoring a solid podium in Spa before leading a lengthy portion of the Brazilian Grand Prix, where an unfortunate drop in the standings relegated him to second place behind Button.
This was also the best year for the so-called new teams, with a combined 112 lap points scored compared to 2010's 74 and 2011's measly 13. Kovalainen understandably took the greater portion of that total with 59 of them. Most of these 112 points were scored in the record-breaking Brazilian Grand Prix, where no less than 20 drivers scored. This allowed the new teams to score 65 lap points, almost entirely in the chaotic early portion of the race.
