The Auriol experiment clearly hasn't worked. Coloni will swap him out with TD Mauro Baldi.

Qualifiying - Portugal
Jean Alesi will start from pole position for McLaren after beating Thierry Boutsen's Williams by a hundredth of a second. The Ferrari's of Alain Prost and Johnny Herbert lock out the second row, ahead of Gerhard Berger in the Benetton and Nigel Mansell in The Dallara. At the back Gregor Foitek fails to qualify his Onyx and reliability problems prevent Bernd Schenider from setting a time, so both Leyton Houses make the grid

Race - Spain

Alain Prost took a dominant victory in Spain, never looking troubled all race, even before Alesi's retirement. After his team-mates retirement, Mika Hakkinen inherited second and managed to hold off a charging Nelson Piquet in the last laps, with Nelson having to settle for the last step on the podium. Ivan Capelli produce a magnificent drive to claim fourth for Minardi with Thierry Boutsen having a pretty mediocre race to fifth. Olivier Panis came home with the last point for Ligier, just holding off Senna, who made a strange pitstop three laps before the end.

Qualifiying - Japan

Jean Alesi took pole for the Japanese Grand Prix in his McLaren, as he attempts to close the gap to Alain Prost in the championship. Joining him on the front row is Gerhard Berger in the Benetton with Prost lining up third. Completing the second row is the second McLaren, driven by Mika Hakkinen. Ayrton Senna will line up fifth in the Arrows, alongside Nelson Piquet in the lead of the Williams. At the back of the field, Alex Caffi fails to make the grid in the Lola, and he is unsurprisingly joined on the sidelines by Gregor Foitek in the Onyx.
