Marco Weiss is a Swiss motorsport driver born in Bremgarten in Swizterland just outside Bern in June 1977. His dad worked for the Swiss navy, his mum was a banker for Credit Suisse. In 1985 they family went to a trip to Britain and wound up at Brands Hatch, Marco wanted to have a go in a go kart, present at the track that day were Clay Regazzoni and Thierry Boutsen, the pair watched Marco blitz the 50cc lap record and win telling marco he had a gift for motorsport.

In 1988 he entered the german cart championship finishing second only to Ralf Schumacher, in 1990 his father was arrested for illegaly organising a hill climb event in Zurich, the event did take place with marco driving his dad's ford Mondeo, Marco comfortably won beating regazzoni and Alain menu, with motor racing illegal in Swizterland Weiss moved to Belgium and hired Boutsen as his coach, with help from jacky ickx, with famous f1 drivers behind him, it was easy to earn a drive in formula ford in 1992 wining the championship, in 1993 he entered the btcc in a privately entered Nissan under the team name belquie Suisse, he finished the championship 3rd behind the dominant BMW. In 1994 he entered and won british f3 driving for Dick Bennett's , fianlly he entered formula 3000 finishing 5th in 1995 and winning easily in 1996

Arrows signed him and a test driver in 1997 with race seat plans for 1998, however pedro Dinizs sponsors ran out of money and were arrested for bribery, Diniz then injured himself at thruxton , so Marco got given the drive for arrows in 1997 partnering Damon hill

(I chose to replace Diniz because the name edit feature in f1 1997 means I can change pedro name)

This is what motivated Marco (along with his belgian connections) to move to Belgium, (that and I quite like Swizterland and Belgium)

Anyway

Pre season press conference: Silverstone, until I post Australia results you can send your questions in to Marco and he will answer.

Question for Marco;

Is he the 'glass half empty' kind of guy, or does he look at it as 'glass half full' ?

Australia 1997 qualifying:

Marco was the first car out on a dry and overcast day, fearing rain would come Marco got his laps in early. His first lap was littered with errors out breaking himself at turn 3, lucky not to spin and eventually spinning at the first chicane setting a time on 1:44.831, he set out for another lap setting a 1:32.706, his session ended when he slammed into the Armco.

1: M Schumacher 1:27.456
2. D Williams. +0.081
3. H Frentzen. +1.329

17:Magunssen 1:31.899
18: Hill 1:32.167
19 Verstappen 1:32.262
20 Weiss 1:32.706

Race:
Marco started his first race in 20th, the boss wanted him to finish at least 15. At the start Schumacher had a poor getaway dropping to 4th enabling a Williams 1-2, Marco pushed his way up to 12th ahead of Panis and just behind Coulthard , on lap 3 and error dropped Marco behind Panis and Katayama to 15th.

On lap 5 despite lapping quickly the team brought him in putting new slicks and 5 laps worth of fuel in the car, Marco came out just behind Mika Salo, Marco nailed Salo out of the fast chicane doing the same thing to Nakano the next lap , however the rain had come in, Marco had a choice stay out and risk a crash or pit?

He stayed out and was running 12th after jumping Panis in the pits, then on lap 8 Alesi appeared out the pits, Marco bravely went around the outside of Alesi, however Marco went off at turn 1 the next lap and was too ambitious in rejoining hitting Alesi getting him 3 points on his licence. He then received a warning from the Stewarts after hitting Salo who had blown up.

On the final lap wets were the name of the game, but wanting track position Marco stayed out and skated around, he completed the lap running on fumes and in 2 minutes spinning twice, the race at the front was very strategy based, Numberone lost a tonne of time by pitting first on lap 5 he was jumped by frenzten who pitted a lap later and Schumacher who pitted on lap 7, Numberone lost a lot of time passing Irvine finishing 3rd, Schumacher has 2nd with Frentzen first

1. H Frentzen 16:19.308
2. M Schumacher +13.626
3. D Williams. +24.121
4. E Irvine. +29.357
5. M Hakkinen +31.523
6: G Berger. +38.145

11. M Weiss. +56.844

FL: H Frentzen 1:31.389

1. H Frentzen 10
2 M Schumacher 6
3 D Williams. 4
4. E Irvine. 3
5: M Hakkinen. 2
6: G Berger. 1
