Alt-F1 1981 - Season Preview Part II

Post by pasta_maldonado »

Hello and welcome to the third season of rFAF1. The main addition to this season is a comprehensive set of rules, aimed to make things more formal, and so everyone knows what is going on - which has been a problem in the past. They can be found here, on the wiki. Please read these rules, as there are some major rule changes. The other major changes to this season is that the number of races has been cut from 17 to 16, RNG will decide the fate of RL drivers, and I'll try to run a more consistent schedule.

Entries are now OPEN. However, at the moment there is no space for new entries, so I'm just asking for all the 1980 entrants (listed below) to re-confirm their entries. Driver, Chassis, and other things will be announced once I know who's in and who's not. Entries in RED are still unconfirmed

If you do not want to take part in this series any longer, please post your withdrawal. If you would like to retire your team, and go on the waiting list for another one when the opportunity comes up, you may do so.

You have until 11:59 GMT Saturday 30th March to confirm your entries

You aren't imagining things, this is an Alt-F1 post!

Things are finally getting underway in the last weeks of the year, if things go well, we should have at least the pre-season tests up by the end of the year.

Before then, here's the entry list. I'd like all team owners to confirm their interest in this series either in this thread, or directly to me via the chat.

Alfa Romeo has no intention of abandoning their F1 program despite not having proper results yet which is obviously Renault's fault.

Entry confirmed

AFAIK Harvey Jones is leaving Lotus for 1981, and I'm retaining Alan Jones with the team, so if RNG decided he'll be drive again for Lotus, he can use #1, right?

Other info will follow in a couple of days

Indeed, if Alan Jones' RNG sends him to Lotus, he'll use #1.

Driver signing will open once all entries are confirmed/entry list filled, with chassis and engines dealt with after that.

I'll confirm my entry for 1981. Also, Rene Arnoux is sacked. Is Alain Prost interested in driving for Ferrari? Or Larry Perkins? Or Harvey Jones?

With all but 5 teams confirmed, I'll open driver signings, with the deadline of this coming Saturday still for those entrants who have not re-confirmed.

Fictional driver signing works just like any other series: Agree a deal with the owner of the driver and he'll race for you. Driver owners have the final say.

For real-life drivers, the RNG will be coming in to play for this season. Just bid for any real life drivers that you want, and if FISA will grant him a license (see wiki link in OP), then an RNG will be run, taking into account the situation - team success, driver career, other pressures. You can make as many bids as you want - WITHIN REASON. I dont want a list of 12+ drivers

The RNGs will be run once a significant number of bids are in.

FantometteBR wrote:I could be too as well?

Second, congratulations. :P

To help you, here's a quick run-through of everyone who competed last year, rated out of ten.

Alan Jones // 10 // A great season to become champion, only let down by chronic unreliability. Highlight being Monaco
Jody Scheckter // 6 // Should have done better. Error strewn season let down the strong Williams-Honda package
Jeremy-Etienne Voeckler // 10 // Amazing debut season
Harvey Jones // 9 // Unreliability let down a strong, consistent run
Callum McAllister // 6 // Again, many mistakes let down the Williams. Flashes of pace let down by errors in the latter half of the season.
Larry Perkins // 8.5 // Brilliant debut year with 2 wins, in Brazil and Canada, being the highlight. Let down by Brabham's awful second half to the season.
Jacques Laffite // 4 // A fluke win in Austria the only highlight of a poor year as defending World Champion
Stefan Bellof // 8.5 // A season to remember for the German. Big results came in attrition races, but dragged the Shadow to the points regularly and unexpectedly.
Eadbhard O'Caoimhin // 9 // Strong season in the Ligier. Made the best of a bad season, with all the bad luck to boot.
Guillaume Gauthier // 9 // Brilliant start for the likeable Frenchman, a run of points finishes earning him a one-off shot at Williams, where he promptly won. Struggled with the pressure and unreliability in the last third of the season.
Mario Andretti // 6.5 // Given a chance with Merzario, but should have done more than one podium.
Alain Prost // 7.5 // Dragged the Alfa onto the grid more often than not, before impressing in a half-season with Merzario
Jean-Pierre Jabouille // 8 // Only finished on 4 occasions, and although was in shot of victory when the Renault was suited to the track, ultimately didn't match JEV.
Nelson Piquet // NC // Had a great start to the season, but was injured in testing before a championship charge could materialise. We wish him the best in his continued recovery.
Rene Arnoux // 7 // Little team management, poor car, but somehow stuck with it and delivered a solid season and some results.
Gilles Villeneuve // 8 // Same as Arnoux, the Ferrari was tosh. Came alive towards the end of the year, dragging the car kicking an screaming to the podium.
Giancarlo Martini // NC // Impressed, but had too few races to properly judge. Worth a risk.
Valentino Nicchi // 6 // Insane qualifying pace was gone by mid-season, although the frustration of the hand-grenade Restov could be a factor.
Carlos Reutemann // 4 // Poor run at Renault somewhat redeemed by a new-found turn of pace at the fledgling Toleman
Peter Brock // 5 // Left-field choice to replace Piquet impressed on debut but did nothing much of note, even in a deteriorating Brabham.
Padraig O'Connell // 6 // Qualified more times than anyone expected in the Rebaque, including a 4th position at Monaco.
Davey Clarke // 6.5 // No one envied driving the Wolf, which blew up when it didn't DNQ, but dragged it to a 5th in Canada and two more finishes to boot.
Jan Lammers // 4.5 // Strong start with the FIATs, but developing the new Hart turbos hampered his season
Ladislav Sedlak // 5.5 // Fairly anonymous in the Ensign.
Jochen Mass // 6 // Scored Audi's first - and so far only - point, and made Lauda look a tad ridiculous too.
Brian Henton // 3 // Poor results in a decent Shadow will do little to impress would-be employers.
Marc Surer // 6 // Solid season, just missed on on points on a few occasions. The few DNQs can be forgiven considering he's come back from a horror samsh at the 1979 German GP
Elio De Angelis // NC // Two races before a hasty sacking is not enough to judge the Italian.
Hiroshi Takagi // 2 // The Tyrrell wasn't the best, but did little to impress, and taking out Scheckter from the lead of the Italian Grand Prix has earnt him a ban until race 14 of this season
Rupert Keegan // 7 // The JLD was awful, struggling to make the grid on every occasion. He stuck with it and notched up 8 finishes, including an 8th in Ireland.
Piercarlo Ghinzani // 2 // Didn't do anything of note, bar earning a ban for knocking JPJ off the road in the Canadian GP, earning a ban. He was sacked thereafter.
Nigel Mansell // 5 // Anonymity can be excused from the rookie in an average car, at the very best of times. Didnt do much to distinguish himself from the rest of the lower midfield.
Keiran Sutherland // 5.5 // Started extremely well, but then dropped off a cliff by the half way point
Siegfried Stohr // 5 // Every start was a happy bonus in that Osella
Deyan Rangelov // 3.5 // First Bulgarian F1 driver did little to offset unreliability and a car firmly mired in the lower midfield.
Niki Lauda // 1 // He lost his motivation somewhere in 1979, and you could tell his heart wasn't in it.
Derek Daly // 2.5 // Poor car is no excuse for being totally outperformed by his team mate.
Didier Proni // 4.5 // Steady season, improved in the last third.
Brett Lunger //NC // One-off in Ireland
Michael Bleekemolen // 3 // Qualified a lot, but was a mobile chicane when the JLD scraped the grid.
Roberto Horford // 0 // A DSQ and ban for REFUSING ot move aside for leaders at Monaco says it all.
Emerson Fittipaldi // 3 // Was poor at Merzario, did a better job at Alfa, but not by much.
Olivier Kunz // 4 // Meh.
Gianfranco Brancatelli // 7 // Impressive number of finishes in the Restov.
Bruno Giacomelli // 3.5 // Poor performance in the second Wolf, before getting the sack.

Anyone else did not complete enough races to be judged.

And with that, we'll offer contracts to Larry Perkins and Alain Prost. (Even if Merzario objects, we'll ask Prost anyways.)

Renault would like to extend our contract with Jeremy-Etienne Voeckler through 1981, to drive our lead car. We would also like to give Jean-Pierre Jabouille one last season to shine with us - however, if he does not accept, we will instead give the seat to Brendon Cassidy instead.

Should Jabouille resign with us, though, Brendon Cassidy is available for any F1 team. As the regining Indy 500 and IndyCar champion, he also has full factory backing from Renault, entitling whoever signs him to discounted Renault engines should they so choose.

Arrows is pleased to announce Brendon Cassidy as their lead driver for the 1981 season.

We'd like to make offers to the following drivers to fill the second seat, by order of precedence.

1. Keke Rosberg
2. Patrick Depailler
3. Patrick Tambay

Reserve Driver List:

1. Thierry Boutsen

With Brendon Cassidy confirmed at Arrows for 1981, the list of drivers we will consider for the 2nd Renault seat should Jean-Pierre Jabouille not return will be:

Valentino Nicchi
Thomas Nurmester
Stefan Bellof
Gilles Villeneuve
Rene Arnoux

Brabham will be aiming at retaining Perkins and Brock. Failing that, we'd like to aim for Andrea de Cesaris. If we can't get him either, Plan C is a fictional driver that I'll announce at a later date.

Jeremy-Etienne Voeckler accepts the deal to be lead driver for Renault.

Simone Guidetti would like to make his services available to any team on the grid.

Merzario will attempt to retain both drivers from 1980 (Andretti + Prost), with a 100K extra to their salary for renewing. If either fails to renew their contract, our backup options in order are as follows;

Stefan Bellof
Gilles Villeneuve
Keke Rosberg
Patrick Depailler
Giancarlo Martini
Elio de Angelis

Our choices for test and reserve driver;
Michele Alboreto
Riccardo Patrese
Vittorio Brambilla
Siegfried Stohr

Reason: Added Depailler into backup options as per Biscione's request

We would like to offer Andrea de Cesaris a promotion to the #34 Alfa Romeo. Should he reject that offer, we will offer the car to Michele Alboreto, Beppe Gabbiani and Giancarlo Martini in that order.

We would like to offer Jean-Pierre Jabouille the #35 Alfa Romeo. Should he reject that offer, we will offer the car to Niki Lauda, Jacques Laffite and Carlos Reutemann in that order.

We would like to offer Frank Jelinski the position of Alfa Romeo Reserve Driver. Should he reject that offer, we will offer the position to Juan Carlos Ridolfi, Guido Pardini and Ari Vatanen in that order.

Furthermore, we would like to offer Abilio Diniz the position of Alfa Romeo Test Driver.

Minardi would like to keep Giancarlo Martini. For the second car, we'll try to sign René Arnoux . Should we fail to get one or both of these drivers, we offer contracts to:
Elio de Angelis
Jochen Mass
John Watson
Nigel Mansell
Jean-Pierre Jarier

Thomas Nurmester is very interested in the Renault offer.

Osella offers their race seats to the following drivers, in order of preference:
Andrea de Cesaris
Michele Alboreto
Teo Fabi
Piercarlo Ghinzani
Simone Guidetti
Bruno Giacomelli
Siegfried Stohr

Once our two race seats are filled, the remaining drivers on the list are offered a reserve driver contract. If there are no drivers to make an offer to, then we'll look at further options.

We'd also like to give testing opportunities to these promising Italian drivers:
Mauro Baldi
Riccardo Paletti

Remember, Reserve drivers need to be taken into account. These drivers are the drivers I'll automatically turn to in cases of injury or suspension. Check the wiki rules for more info.

Renault will offer Didier Pironi our reserve and test driver postion. Failing that, we will instead offer it to Patrick Tambay, and then Thierry Boutsen.

Wolf will return to running a two-car effort this season.

Davey Clarke will return in the first seat. For the second seat, Wolf will make offers to:

John Watson
Derek Warwick
Derek Daly
Nigel Mansell
Tiff Needell

When our second seat is filled, any drivers remaining on this list will be offered our reserve seat.
