2012 Formula 1 Season Preview - The Closest Season Ever?

With 13 teams ready for the first Grand Prix of the season in Bahrain after pre-season testing, some say that this season might be the closest one in Formula One history. The difference between the teams seems not very big and now more than ever it is flawless driving that will make the difference. Let's look at what is new for this season:

Rule Changes:
- Grands Prix have been extended to 160 km (= 100 miles). During the duration of a race, any driver must make two pitstops during a period after the first 10 per-cent of the race and before the final 10 per-cent of the race. Stops outside of said window are of course allowed too, but cannot replace either forced pitstop.
- For the next six seasons, Avon Tyres will be the exclusive tyre supplier for Formula 1. The company provides a soft grooved tyre for dry conditions and wet tyres for rainy conditions.
- On the grounds of safety, the height of the nosecone has been reduced. This has led to the development of the so-called "platypus nose" as the aerodynamically most valueable solution
- Race bans will now only be given for full Grand Prix weekends (i.e. for two races, four races etc.) and will take effect at the Grand Prix weekend following the announcement.
- Whereas suspended race bans used to go until the end of the season, suspended race bans will now be valid for 10 Grands Prix. Furthermore if a rule violation that is punishable by a race ban triggers the suspended race ban, said race ban is not added to the total number of races a driver is banned for.
- Success ballast is, from the Japanese Grands Prix onwards, unlimited and will still be reset after every third Grand Prix weekend.

Team Preview:
Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team
#1: Robert Kubica
#2: Nico Rosberg

The name "Mercedes" is still worth a lot in F1, apparentely, the team managed to lure the reigning world champion to their team for the second time in three seasons. Nico Rosberg returns to the team for which he worked as a test driver in 2010, he is very much interested in proving he can bring it in the top leauge.
Prediction: Top 4

Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro
#3: Nathan McKane
#4: Robert Wickens

A change at the top of Ferrari's management led to the loss of world champion Kubica to Mercedes and of fuel supplier Shell to McLaren. With Nathan McKane coming from Mercedes and the signing of Robert Wickens, the new management have a tough act to follow with Ferrari looking for their third WCC in a row: at least their qualifying pace is still looking very great.
Prediction: Top 4

Red Bull Racing Honda
#5: Jenson Button
#6: Lewis Hamilton

In a controversal decision, the Austrian drinks company did not extend the contract with Sebastién Bourdais who left for IndyCar. Instead the team keeps Honda engines and Jenson Button but has added Button's 2010 team mate Hamilton to the team. With one of the best driver pairings in the world today, Red Bull is looking for their first title in F1.
Prediction: Top 4

Vodafone McLaren Honda
#7: Sebastian Vettel
#8: Vitantonio Liuzzi

Having been left in turmoil after Lewis Hamilton's departure, McLaren responded well by signing Sebastian Vettel. McLaren goes with a blast from the past by signing a Honda engine contract and getting support by Marlboro who have increased investments into F1 after the tobacco sponsorship rules of the EU were loosened. This new combination is gonna need some time to find itself, though.
Prediction: Midfield

Adidas Stefan Grand Prix Hyundai
#9: Shinobu Katayama
#10: Milos Pavlovic

The good news for Stefan are that they have managed to get significant financial support by signing a sponsorship deal with sports clothing giant Adidas. The bad news are that their testing results do not look promising. It might be a tough year for Stefan, but the team is financially secure for years to come.
Prediction: Lower Midfield

Renault F1 Team
#11: Romain Grosjean
#12: Alexandre-Laurent Voeckler

With things being the same as they were at the end of last year, you'd think Renault are in a good position for 2012. Well, according to testing, you'd be sorely mistaken. The Renault engine seems crippling, especially over one lap, and it will require all the skill Grosjean and Voeckler can muster to get good results this year.
Prediction: Backmarker

Sauber F1 Team Ferrari
#14: Pastor Maldonado
#15: Evgeny Restov

On the basis of a few great results at the end of last season, this team radiates confidence from every pore of their being. Whilst jokes about "Socalist Sauber" are going around like cake, the car is looking reasonably promising and so are the drivers.
Prediction: Midfield

Sahara Force India F1 Team Hyundai
#16: Davide Valsecchi
#17: Paulo Serafim

With their first win in F1 finally on the table, the team is looking to make that a more common occurance, but it's gonna be difficult. While Valsecchi has indeed won a Grand Prix last year, many doubts over his skills are not removed yet and even optimists doubt that Hyundai-chosen Paulo Serafim will achieve much in his debut season.
Prediction: Lower Midfield

Canon WilliamsF1 Honda
#18: Esteban Guerreri
#19: Takuma Sato

In a shocking development, Patrick Head was removed from his position with the team ... and as much as this is enraging old-school fans: it seems like this was the right move. With Takuma Sato returning to F1 and Esteban Guerreri geting a full-time drive after his Mercedes showings the team has reasonably talented drivers to give their very good chassis to.
Prediction: Top 4

Nokia KQ Motor Sports Hyundai
#20: Sergio Pérez
#21: Mizuki Ukawa

In a driver swap, Pérez and Maldonado switched teams and right now Maldonado looks like the winner of this exchange. The KQ has lost a bit of its edge which will cost KQ in the team championship, especially with the team formerly known as Super Aguri and Lola making leaps forward.
Prediction: Backmarker

EA Sports Brabham Racing Organisation Hyundai
#22: Michael Schumacher
#23: Rubens Barrichello

With Honda starting the final phase of their F1 withdrawal, Super Aguri looked left on the sidelines until Michael Trick and a few Japanese investors bought up the team. After managing to "convince" the Brabham family to lend their famous name, everything looks set for a good season. Even though the team's lead driver has announced his retirement after 2012, there are some reasons to be optimistic.
Prediction: Midfield

Lola Cars F1 Renault
#24: James James Davies
#25: Nicolás Fontana

In the surprise deal of the season, James James Davies rejected a good offer from Red Bull to sign with Lola. With testing showing the one-lap deficits of the Renault engine, it remains to be seen whether that decision was JJD's masterpiece or whether it will lead to his downfall. Unfortunately, the latter seems more likely right now.
Prediction: Lower Midfield

Marussia F1 Team Renault
#26: Johnny Cecetto, Jr.
#27: John Bean

The newest team in Formula 1 is run by Russian sportscar manufacturer Marussia. While the team is very eager for their debut in F1, all signs make it look like 2012 will be a learning season and points, if at all possible, will be extremely hard to come by.
Prediction: Backmarker

With HRT's demise and the entry of Hyundai we have five manufacturers available for your choice. I will explain the columns:
Company and HP should be self-explainatory. CFP means Car Failure Probability, i.e. it's a fancy term for reliability. The higher it is, the more likely your car is to retire from a race.
To explain the prices: each manufacturer has certain drivers they would like to see in cars running customer engines, these drivers will be named once the driver market opens. Signing one of these drivers gives you the cheaper price, should you not sign one of them or fail to sign one of them, you will pay full price. Furthermore the prices marked with a + apply for contract extensions only, i.e. customers can resign with their current manufacturer for a slightly cheaper price. The works column represents the development costs the work teams have.

>> Step 2: Developing a chassis
Explaining the columns as well:
Max Grip determines the highest amount of grip possible, your car won't have more grip than that value, no matter what, even if you had HWNSNBM himself driving the vehicle. An RNG will determine that value once you have decided on a chassis type.
CFP is the same as with engines - the lower the number the more likely your car is to finish.
From 2012 on, you can upgrade your 2011 chassis (which will be classified as class "U"), which will be slightly cheaper than building a new one, but your competitiveness will most likely suffer (although your max grip cannot sink below 15600).

As mentioned in the previous thread, James James Davies is interested in a race driver role with any championship-contending team. That is, Ferrari, Red Bull, or Stefan.

Thanks to Seedstriker for reminding me of the €50,000,000 Chance Time: a feature to have a bit of randomness involved, in which a randomly selected top six team will lose €50,000,000 (this year Red Bull) and a randomly selected bottom team will gain €50,000,000 (this year Super Aguri). The only reason I went Hyundai instead was to maintain our rivalry and for engine power/reliability. The car is almost Marussia quality. I fear the Marussia's might break 100 points for the season. The only advantage Stefan has over most teams is reliability and a bit more power when compared to the Renault.

Super Aguri will go for class A chassis. As far as I get it, I cannot change engine supplier and the price for the Hondas will be 100 mln whoever my drivers be? Because if I am not receiving free engines from Honda, I don't see why I stick with them or be bound to sign any particular drivers. What is more, everyone who has already contract with Honda may sign with them at the same price Super Aguri pays, which in french is called "unsupportable" :)

In other words: May I switch to Hyundai?
To finish first, first you have to finish!

As I explained to you last season, Super Aguri is the Honda "works team". Since free engines would be game-breaking since they'd give you more money than customer teams have, I need to charge you for the engines - I tried to do it via chassis costs last season but since that a) didn't work out the way I wanted it to and b) you complained about that too, I changed that.

Now, if you still dislike this, you can stop being Super Aguri and become Brabham (as it would have happened in Real Life if Michael Trick had anything to say about it) and therefore become a customer team like all the others.

Williams under new management now that Patrick Head has decided to take permenant Gardening leave, will once again sign with Honda and we will spend quite a bit of money on a chassis but not as much as McLaren or Ferrari but we hope enough to make the chassis competitive...

Now, that looks promising, we would like to rename to Brabham and sign Hyundai contrat. Chassis A remains.

Driver Market

With all the cars ready, we can now sign some drivers. For those of you who are still with this game from 2011, the system will not be unfamiliar to you. Basically you pick drivers and the gods of RNG decide in case of a real-life driver and the users decide for their fictional drivers.

Note that drivers can bring sponsorship; unlike last season, any driver has at least five per-cent of a chance to get a rounded up value of 0-30 million - that has led to some interesting results already. You can find a list of drivers and the sponsorship they can bring here! Note that if a driver is not on that list it does not mean they are unavailable, I just can't think of every possible driver ever, so if you are missing a driver you'd like to sign, just request him in this thread and I will run the sponsorship RNG. ;)

As mentioned before, each engine manufacturer has a selection of six drivers teams can sign to get a discount. Please note that you can only get the discount once, so signing more than one of the following drivers is not going to get you an even cheaper engine. Furthermore, you do not have first priority in signing these even if you are a customer of the engine manufacturer.
Ferrari: Davide Valsecchi, Giancarlo Fisichella, Jan van der Maeyede (F), Jules Bianchi, Raffaele Marciello, Sergio Pérez
Honda: Evgeny Restov (F), Koudai Tsukakoshi, Rafael Suzuki, Stefan Wilson, Takuma Sato, Vitantonio Liuzzi
Hyundai: Mizuki Ukawa (F), Neil Sagan (F), Paulo Serafim (F), Scott Speed, Sung-Hak Mun, Tom Chilton
Mercedes: No Mercedes customers, therefore no list needed
Renault: Alexandre-Laurent Voeckler (F), Javier Tarancón, Jean-Éric Vergne, Kevin Magnussen, Nicolás Fontana, Robin Frijns

Furthermore, from 2012 on, you can offer drivers conditional wages, i.e. a part of or a total wage that is only paid out if a certain amount of podiums, points finishes or wins are reached. Please consider that most drivers will prefer to have their wage paid to them properly. One more thing: you must state the conditions as clearly as possible. I will not double-check things and if you pay more money than you wanted too that's your fault and not mine. ;)

FMecha, I am afraid your finances won't quite suffice for those deals - with Ukawa signed, you will need a driver who earns 6 million or less and brings 30 million in sponsorship. ;)

Yeah, you can cut Ukawa's wage down. That way you can pay your other driver, who must bring 30 million, up to 11 million
