Formula 52
With the ever increasing cost of Formula 1 and the difficulty for new teams to be competitive/viable F1 was in a decline and even threatened to fade to under 20 entries with just 3 engine manufacturers. The FIA had decided this could not continue and made a radical decision. For the 2013 season all chassis where to become spec whilst freeing up the engine regulations and generally making the product more affordable. Despite worries from the die hard fans about the death of premier racing, the new rules were incredibly popular. In the maiden season alone over 100 teams attempted to enter! After an extensive investigation in to the capabilities of the teams 52 of them were deemed competent enough to enter the inaugural season, now dubbed unofficially as Formula 52.
To avoid a huge backlog of Pre Qualifying and DNQ's the rules needed to change. With 52 teams being far too much to run on track at once the teams were to be grouped in to 4 seeded groups 13 teams each for heat races, with the top 3 teams in each plus 2 lucky wild card drivers making it to a final race.
Group 1: Blue Group
1.Red Bull - Renault
1.Sebastian Vettel - 2.Mark Webber
Red Bull racing as champions of the final year of F1 take the number 1 seeding and have a very strong chance of holding the championship with a stellar driver line up and powerful engine. Both drivers will be keen to go for the title in this new era, but will Red Bull allow Webber the chance?
2.Williams - Renault
16.Pastor Maldonado - 17.Valteri Bottas
Under the new rules Williams have every chance to be winning heat races at least and should be regular finalists. It is up to the drivers to prove what they can do and both of them can be a thorn in Red Bulls side. It might all hing on which Maldonado shows up!
3.HRT - Cosworth
24.Pedro de la Rosa - 25.Narain Karthikeyan
HRT initially looked like not making it, but the promise of being a seeded team and equal machinery was enough to lure enough sponsors to inch in. The driver line up remains questionable and the Cosworth engine isn''t as strong as some of the others. On the positive side they should at least score plenty of heat points.
4,Qatar - Mercury
32.Neel Jani 33. Nasser Al Attiyah
It was inevitable that middle east investment would come to F52 and the Qatari government has put the funds together to create their own team complete with a custom built engine from their powerboard team supplier Mercury. Neel Jani has been close to F1 for many years and leads the squad whilst sometime shooter sometime rally sometime Dakar star Al Attiyah represents Qatar.
Don't expect the team to set the world on fire year 1, but they do have plenty of cash.
5.Arrows - Cosworth
40.Sebastian Loeb 41.Edoardo Mortara
The famous Arrows name returns to F1 with the amazing Sebastian Loeb moving in to single seaters. What link this team has to the old Arrows organisation is questionable at best, the fact the orange and black cars are back is enough for most. A solid Cosworth engine and
Mortara a solid choice of driver expect multiple heat points and perhaps even the odd appearance in the finals.
6.Suzuki
48.Tio Ellinas 49.Mads Ostberg
The new affordable F1 makes a great platform for auto manufactures to enter and Suzuki leapt at the change to show off their new engine technology. They have thrown the dice on the driver line up going for Gp3 ace Ellinas and WRC Mads "Mad" Ostberg, the latter as a homage to their former rally past. The team are self admitting underdogs and their real goal this year is to attract more teams to their engine.
7.Polestar - Volvo
56.Marcus Ericsson 57.Mattias Ekstrom
Representing the very best Swedeb has to offer the Polestar team enters full of hope and with a good deal from Volvo. Both drivers are competent if not spectacular with Ericsson especially keen to show what he can do after a few less then brilliant GP2 seasons. This team
should be consistent low end heat points scorers and making a final would be a great achievement for the small team.
8.Nissan
64.Rio Haryanto 65.Jaime Alguersuari
Nissan are entering the series to market themselves to the Asian market, hence the signing of Haryanto. Rio has pulled out some great drives in tricky conditions in the past but is marked by inconsistency. However the real star in the team is Alguersuari who represents a good capture for the team, the engine hasn't looked the strongest but the Spaniard should score a hatfull of points.
9.Dallara - Alfa Romeo
72.Tony Kanaan 73. James Hinchcliffe
It has been a tricky offseason for Dallara after the team went bouncing around multiple engine manufactures, first trying Renault before being rejected, then Honda, then VW before finally ending up with Alfa Romeo. Dallara decided to look to America for their drivers and signing a good pair of Indy car drivers to pedal their cars. Despite all the trouble they have looked great in testing and could even trouble the finals on a semi regular basis!
10.Leader - Geely
80.Ho Ping Tun 81. Ma Qing Ha
A genuine 100% Chinese driven team has found their way in to the series with the aim to "promote Chinese values." Neither driver is particularly fantastic but in terms of the international scene it is the best China has to offer, maybe given time this team could do something but with a Geely made engine I really looks like this will be a year spent at the back.
11. Jaguar-Rover
88.Darly O'Young 89. Jason Plato
Now for a Anglican-Chinese effort, it is believed the Rover engine is surprisingly very powerful but major question marks hang over the driver line up with a pair of touring car aces at the helm. Both drivers are very attractive to sponsors though and with Jaguar continuing to struggle with money it very much looks like this team is a cash out!
12. Prost - Peugeot
96.Yvan Muller 97. Loic Duval
Alain Prost is back as a team owner and has decided to run a very French team. Besides the hilarity of Muller and Plato running in the same heat there is not all that much to say about the driver line up, solid, the Peugeot engine looks very average at best and at worst a time bomb. Though the team hasn't looked terrible in testing and could score plenty of points,
13.Ocean - Pure
104.Fellipe Albuerquerque 105. Kevin Ceccon
The Ocean team was the very last team to get the nod in to Formula 52 narrowly beating out USF1. The Portugese team run by Tiago Monteiro is not going to be setting the world on fire, having to resort to PURE to even make it to the grid at all with two drivers that though capable are going to be tested at the top level. They should at least beat the Leader team!

Ferrari have to go down as one of the overall favorites for both titles. The Ferrari engine may just be the most powerful and Alonso and an inform Massa will be hard to beat.
2.Force India - Mercedes.
14.Paul di Resta 15.Adrian Sutil
The Force India team has a very strong line up but will have to go that extra step to beat Ferrari on more then an occasional basis. There are plenty of strong teams in this group but with the experience and driver line up they have the team should make it to most of the finals. The real question is what their 2014 engine will be.
3.Marussia - Cosworth
22.Jules Bianchi 23.Max Chilton
By all means the Marussia team should be challenging for plenty of heat points this season, Bianchi especially looks a real star. However there are plenty of teams in this group that could end up getting the jump on them and 3rd in the group looks unlikely.
4.Jordan - Cosworth
30.Rubens Barrichello 31.Antonio Felix da Costa
Eddie Jordan is back and he has an excellent overall package with him, da Costa is very highly rated as a rookie whilst Barrichello is an experienced peddler. The yellow machines should be scrapping for 3rd place and may make the finals on a good day. da Costa vs Bianchi might be worth looking out for!
5.Coloni - Zytek
38.Gabriele Tarquini 39.Adrian Quaife-Hobbes
Coloni are back in this new affordable Formula series, though the experienced race team faces an uphill struggle this season as the Zytek engine seems significantly under powered. This will most likely be the last year of racing for Tarquini who is mainly here to help the team settle in. Quaife-Hobbes looks like a promising youngster and could be the teams star in the next few seasons.
6.Aston Martin
46.Bruno Senna 47.Rob Huff
Aston Martin are back in single seaters after their their forgetful 50's effort. The engine seems to be a real powerhouse and Bruno Senna is capable of getting some real solid results so it very much looks like the team can fight at the front. WTCC champion Huff completes the line up and it reamains to be seen what he can do. Potentially the fastest of the new teams!
7.Deltawing-Nissan

The Deltawing team are certainly talking the talk. Bringing in two famous surnames, talking about finding efficiency and believing to be the future of motorsport. In what is a tough group they will be lucky to capture the odd top 10 finish, though they are sure to be a fan favorite.
8.Penske - Chevrolet
62.Will Power 63.Helio Castroneves
This is a potentially mouth watering team, the Penske squad returns to international racing and Chevrolet have bought good engines with them. Power and Castroneves are two drivers that can dominate the domestic scene and it will be great to see them fighting for the top 3 in the group. This team is hoping to make the finals fairly frequently.

After seeing the positive results of the Chevrolet engine, Chevrolet decided to enter a factory team alongside Penske. The need to sign an American driver and the fact Penske got the best drivers first means the driver line up may look a little weaker then Penske, but that won't stop them challenging for 3rd and the car seems more reliable in factory hands.
10.Alitalia - Lancia
78.Vitantonio Liuzzi 79.Giancarlo Fisichella
The season hasn't even started and the rumors are this team has a rather shady link to Berlusconi and even the mafia! Outside these outlandish rumors the teams origin comes from the successful Superstars championship and for the teams debut they have decided to go for two experienced drivers just so they can find their feet. The home-brew rebadged Lancia engine isn't the best so the team might not be on the sharp end right away.
11.Porsche-VW
86.Benoit Treluyer 87.Lucas Luhrr
The Porsche team has returned! Under VW leadership the team has recruited from within their own Porsche endurance racing ranks and the team has looked very good under testing. They should be fighting at the front in the crowded battle for 3rd.
12.RUSSIAN TIME - VW
94.Sam Bird 95.Tom Dillman
This team was originally meant to be Audi but instead of fighting Porsche VW decided to pull the plug early. This lead to Isport and then Russian Time taking over the project and the frankencar is ready to race. Bird and Dillman are both excellent drivers that deserve a chance to show what they can do and RUSSSIAN TIME hope to be competetive right away, they are already hoping to sign Petrov for 2014.
13.Asiatech
102.Fairuz Fauzy 103.Jazeman Jafaar
One of the later teams to enter, Asiatech are doing their best to improve Asian sport but they do not quite have the experience of Europe or the finances of North America behind them. Not the greatest drivers or the greatest engines means they look doomed to prop up the bottom of the table. There is always hope!

This will be the default USF1 team in my mind! And challenging the top-3... USF1 couldn't have done that in real life, and nor could Don Pentecost!

Group 3: Silver
1.McLaren-Mercedes

McLaren seem to be starting on the back foot with Hamilton going off to Mercedes leaving Jenson Button to lead the team. That being said McLaren go in to the group as favorites and will be expected to challenge for Final victories on a regular basis. They could face a stronger challenge in the heats then they would be comfortable with though.
2.Sauber-Ferrari
11.Nico Hulkenberg 12.Esteban Gutierrez
Sauber are one team looking for any slips McLaren will make. Hulkenberg will be keen to show off how McLaren should have picked him whilst Gutierrez brings cash as well as speed. The car has had some reliability issues in testing but the team looks super quick.
3.Caterham-Renault
20.Charles Pic 21.Giedo van der Garde
Caterham do have a shot at making it to the finals and scoring plenty of points, at the very least they should aim for top 10's in the heats for every round. The Renault package is great, Charles Pic is certainly not slow and van der Garde has been eyeing up the top level for some time. The real battle is with DAMS to keep the Renault deal for future seasons.
4.BMW

On the face of it the BMW should be a winning line up, Spengler is their prodigal son and Timo Glock is a proven top line driver. However the BMW engine they have produced has looked a total disaster and the rumours are the team has already written the year off, oh dear. At least the livery is good.
5.Toyota
36.Kamui Kobayashi 37.Alex Wurz
Like BMW, another returning team, unlike BMW they have not built a spanner of an engine. The Toyota is looking really solid indeed and best of all it has the best fuel consumption rate of any engine meaning it can run faster for longer. Kobayashi could pull off the odd suprise result whilst the team managed to convince Wurz to make a surprise return. Apparently Toyota are still angry with Ant Davidson!

DAMS hope to be among the strongest of the new teams, with GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi and the promising Felipe Nasr on the team their line up may well be stronger than Caterhams. DAMS have flirted with entering the top level before, can they deliver?

Hyundai are an example of the growing power of South Korean business on the foreign stage and have gone big by signing the refugee former Caterham drivers of Petrov and Kovalainen. Inconsistency has dogged the team in testing and there are question marks on their pace. None the less, if the car is working well the drivers will deliver.
8.Peugeot

Group 3 is most certainly the group with most car manufactures in it! Pagenaud and Bourdais are excellent peddlers and both of them can be in with good results on their day. The car seems to be very hit and miss as of preseason, not at all helped by the engines tendency to catch fire...
9.Lamborghini-VW
68.Mike Rockenfeller 69.Tom Kristensen
VW nearly ended up with 3 teams in the sport as Lamborghini boldly demanded to be entered. With Rockenfeller and Kristensen a safe endurance team line up, it seems the Italian roots of the team are vanishing day by day. The car should be quick and good for many top 10 finishes in the heats, appearances in the Final though do seem unlikely.
10.Minardi-Asiatech
76.Justin Wilson 77.Norberto Michelisz
Minardi are back in F1, the ever popular team is cash strapped as ever relying on the talents of Hungarian sports personality of the year Norberto Michelisz to bring sponsors and a loving group of fans. Wilson leads the team he once drove for but with Asiatech engines don't count on too much giant slaying, but enough to frustrate the woeful much better funded BMW's!
11.Prodrive-Mercedes

Prodrive have finally been given entry in to F1, though just barely. Rumours are the team is being used as a giant rolling test rig for the other Mercedes teams but regardless it is good to see Paffet in F1. He is joined by Jaime Green and the word "solid" just about sums up the team.
12.Lola-Zytek
92.Nick Heidfeld 93.Karun Chandhok
Cash strapped Lola entered the process before entering administration, in reality the team is being run by the Rebellion team to carry on the Lola name as the classic marque continues to search for a buyer. The Zytek engine is barely worth having though so far Lola have managed to get more out of it then the others. Heidfeld especially could end up with a great result if the planets align.
13.Honda
100.Dario Franchitti 101.Scott Dixon
The final factory effort of the group, Honda. Though truly this is not a factory effort at all, instead being run from Ganassi head quarters in the USA. As such Ganassi have placed their two drivers in the program and so far the Honda team has looked very fine indeed and will 100% be in the hunt for a overall top 3 finish in the group and multiple final appearances.
And yes, Scott Dixon is much better than Ryan Briscoe!

Group 3 is most certainly the group with most car manufactures in it! Pagenaud and Bourdais are excellent peddlers and both of them can be in with good results on their day. The car seems to be very hit and miss as of preseason, not at all helped by the engines tendency to catch fire...
9.Lamborghini-VW
68.Mike Rockenfeller 69.Tom Kristensen
VW nearly ended up with 3 teams in the sport as Lamborghini boldly demanded to be entered. With Rockenfeller and Kristensen a safe endurance team line up, it seems the Italian roots of the team are vanishing day by day. The car should be quick and good for many top 10 finishes in the heats, appearances in the Final though do seem unlikely.
10.Minardi-Asiatech
76.Justin Wilson 77.Norberto Michelisz
Minardi are back in F1, the ever popular team is cash strapped as ever relying on the talents of Hungarian sports personality of the year Norberto Michelisz to bring sponsors and a loving group of fans. Wilson leads the team he once drove for but with Asiatech engines don't count on too much giant slaying, but enough to frustrate the woeful much better funded BMW's!
11.Prodrive-Mercedes
84.Gary Paffet 85.Jamie Green
Prodrive have finally been given entry in to F1, though just barely. Rumours are the team is being used as a giant rolling test rig for the other Mercedes teams but regardless it is good to see Paffet in F1. He is joined by Jaime Green and the word "solid" just about sums up the team.
12.Lola-Zytek
92.Nick Heidfeld 93.Karun Chandhok
Cash strapped Lola entered the process before entering administration, in reality the team is being run by the Rebellion team to carry on the Lola name as the classic marque continues to search for a buyer. The Zytek engine is barely worth having though so far Lola have managed to get more out of it then the others. Heidfeld especially could end up with a great result if the planets align.
13.Honda
100.Dario Franchitti 101.Scott Dixon
The final factory effort of the group, Honda. Though truly this is not a factory effort at all, instead being run from Ganassi head quarters in the USA. As such Ganassi have placed their two drivers in the program and so far the Honda team has looked very fine indeed and will 100% be in the hunt for a overall top 3 finish in the group and multiple final appearances.
And yes, Scott Dixon is much better than Ryan Briscoe!

Group 4: Black Group
1.Lotus-Renault
7.Kimi Raikkonen 8.Romain Grosjean
Lotus have a difficult task if they wish to emerge as the group winners, with Mercedes and a whole host of strong teams in this group. That being said the Renault engine is great and Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean both have a strong chance of winning races with Raikkonen having an outside shot at the title. Lotus vs Mercedes may well be the highlight of the entire group stage.
2.Mercedes
9.Nico Rosberg 10.Lewis Hamilton
Finishing 5th in the last year of Formula 1 meant the team was bound to be drawn with another top 5 member. Capturing Lewis Hamilton from McLaren is a great boost for the team and as long as Lotus don't take too many points off them from the heats they could well have a shot at the title, at the very least a top 4 result overall. The Mercedes engine may be lagging a little bit compared to the Ferrari and Renault, but it shouldn't stop the team from fighting right at the front.
3.Toro Rosso
18.Jean Eric Vergne 19.Daniel Ricciardo
On a good day Toro Rosso might well be in the fight for a heat win, on a bad the other teams might just leave them behind such is the inconsistent form of the team. Regardless the Ferrari engine is a real boost, as is the possibility of a future drive at Red Bull. With two Mercedes teams, Lotus and a factory Ford effort coming 3rd in the heat could be a real challenge.
4.Ford-Cosworth
25.Ryan Hunter-Reay 26.Mikko Hirvonen
The factory Ford effort has looked very strong in testing and will probably end up the best Cosworth runner.
Ford are aiming big for their first year in the series and a heat win and multiple final appearances is their goal, they have a very good chance of making it.
5.Schumacher-Mercedes
34.Michael Schumacher 35.Ralf Schumacher
To a lesser person the thought of being outed by Lewis Hamilton would be enough to end your career. Not Michael Schumacher who feels a burning passion to continue. Along with his brother and a number of senior staff from Mercedes they have formed a splinter team to prove there is life in the old dog yet. Still popular with the German sponsors this team could be a wild card in the championship, though Ralf Schumachers motivation is in question.
6.Spyker-Ferrari

Everyone's favorite Dutch super car company is back and ready to promote Robin Frijns as the next best young driver sensation. The team could not have a better engine supplier than Ferrari, though the technical team is not the best. Regular top 10 appearances is their aim in this heat, anything else would be a massive result for the team.
7.Mark Webber Arden - Zytek
50.Mitch Evans 51.Alex Brundle
Mark Webber's retirement home or Red Bull Jr. Jr. are the nicknames given to this team. The budget for this team is on the smaller side and the Zytek engines are pretty shocking. None the less the pair of youngsters are eager to prove what they can do and the pressure really is off for year 1.
8.Triple 8 - Holden

The spirit of adventure is what drives this team to compete. Fresh from dominating V8 Supercars this Aussie bunch are keen to show what can be achieved by a little heart and a lot of hard work. Whincup and Lowndes are both experienced drivers who did race in single seaters for what seemed like an age ago. Top 10 results in the heats will be worth celebrating but the Holden engine certainly does not seem like a bad one.
9.Alfa Romeo
66.Jerome d'Ambrosio 67.Luiz Razia
Alfa Romeo are in for another crack at F1, hoping to emulate their early 50's achievements. Frankly they will be lucky to match their 80's attempt. They have with them a couple of drivers that deserve to be in the top level and in this difficult of group, look likely to score a modest amount of points. So far the customer Dallara team has been stomping them in testing so the Alfa engineers must be scratching their heads.
10.Super Aguri - Honda
74.Takuma Sato 75.James Calado
It is not a party without Super Aguri. The lovable Aguri Suzuki team are back with Takuma Sato once again at the helm. James Calado is one of the more promising rookies in the series to boot. It seems that semi regular heat points will be the norm with help from the powerful Honda engines. Dare they dream?
11.PURE

The PURE team is aiming high after securing both the Formula 2 and Formula 3 champions. What they make up in promising young talent they lack in...everything else. Nobody denies that this will be a huge effort for PURE but at least they can rest assured their engine is not the worst out there!
12.DOME - Honda

Ambitious is the word that best sums up the DOME team. Having secured a Honda engine and Venezuelan oil money what could go wrong? The answer seems to be everything as so far almost every part of the car has broken at some point, having Viso hardly increases your finishing rate either. The positive though is that the car has looked fairly quick, especially with former Toro Rosso driver Buemi.
13.TOMS-Toyota
98.Andre Lotterer 99.Kazuki Nakajima
The final team to be previewed. The customer TOM'S Toyota team has been one of the surprises of testing with both drivers managing fairly reasonable results for a team little suspect would be anywhere at all. Even being drawn in this group, arguably one of the toughest, the team looks like it can score some good results and on a good day may even reach the finals.

All teams arrived at Jerez for preseason testing. The atmosphere was nervy as well as crowded, so the action was spread over several days. Here are the top 10 from the first week of testing.

Red Bull and Vettel immediately catch the eye by setting the only 1'14 to top the time sheets. Rosberg and Sutil prove the Mercedes engine is competitive with 2nd and 3rd, especially good for Sutil on his return to racing. Maldonado and Grosjean are hoping to be threats this year with top 5 positions. Hopefully there won't be too many accidents from them. Michael Schumacher is the unofficial fastest of the new teams, but essentially he is in a repainted Mercedes car, the true fastest of the new boys was surprisingly Tom Dillman of RUSSIAN TIME. The scrapped Audi project was clearly a good one! Aston Martin, Penske and Porsche complete a top 10 of 10 different manufacturers, indeed the top 16 were all different cars with Webber in 17th making the first complete team on the time sheets.
The top Ferrari was Alonso in 13th whilst the top McLaren was Perez down in 21st! Though both were within a second of Vettel with down to Calado in 23rd seperated by less than one second.

Whilst Michael Schumacher is fighting near the front his brother Ralf is near the bottom of the table! The struggles of the Zytek teams are clear with Both MW Ardencars, Colonis and a Lola in the bottom group. Tio Ellinas was gutted to be so slow in the Suzuki whilst anyone betting on the Asiatech or Leader teams may want to sit down. Ho Ping Tun is over 3.5 seconds a lap slower than Vettel around the short Jerez circuit.

Now for the News:
The Weekend will be divided across 3 days of running. The Friday (Thursday for Monaco GP) will feature a 30 minute practice for each heat group followed by a 30 minute qualifying for the grid of each heat. The Saturday will be dedicated to running the four heat races, each heat will be a sprint race at about 20% normal race distance. With the top 3 teams from each heat advancing to the Sunday Final. Along with 2 drivers deemed fast enough to join them. The Sunday race grid will be decided by the race time of the heat winners, with the fastest overall time being awarded Pole position, the 2nd fastest heat winner getting 2nd place and so on.
The final will be a full distance race with a mandatory pit-stop.
The points awarded in the heats are 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1
The points for the final will be 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1
Now for a select few preseason headlines:
Bruno Senna: Aston Martin can be Competitive right away!
Sebastian Loeb: I wish to be the fastest rookie this season!
McLaren: This will be a close season, don't count us out.

Renault: 5 teams is too many! Rumors are DAMS and Caterham will have to work hard to keep their deal.

With varying degrees of hospitality all 52 teams manage to roll in to New York for the opening round of the inaugural season of Formula 52.
Already there is controversy with the new age formula. After Friday practice it was clear that many teams were struggling with transmission issues after only a few laps of running. Not only this but the Watkins Glen circuit is very slippery with many drivers sliding on the cold surface of the track.
McLaren continue to claim that they are not facing any issues but after Friday running and pole posistion for Nico Hulkenberg for the heat race more questions appeared then answers. Mercedes seem to be showing the good form they had in testing and Massa beats Alonso.
Here is the list of pole sitters for the first 4 heat races of the season:
Blue: Mark Webber - Red Bull
Red: Fellipe Massa - Ferrari
Silver: Nico Hulkenberg - Sauber
Black: Nico Rosberg - Mercedes
The first racing of the season begins with the Blue group as Red Bull hope to begin the season with a win.
Webber Pole from Maldonado, Vettel, Hinchcliffe, Muller and Ostberg. Bottas only 11th.
Maldonado had a great start and took the lead!
Plato stacked it at the start and forced himself, Alguersuari and Ellinas off the track,
on Alguersuari spun into the path of Al-Attiyah breaking the Qatari's front wing, Plato emerged ahead of
Albuerquerque and broke his front wing.
Duval spun to the back on lap 1.
Mortara, Hinchcliffe, Loeb and Bottas all retire from within the top 10 early in the race.
Webber took the lead from Maldonado at turn one on lap 7/9.
Muller has a water leak one lap from the end and the track gets very slippy.
Vettel spun at the inner loop on lap 9/9 and managed to avoid hitting anything but
dropped to 4th behind Ostberg. Kanaan was not so lucky hitting the tires heavily
and retireing from the race, a couple of other drivers nearly lost control but kept going.
Suzuki looked set to celebrate an unlikely podium place when Ostberg spun just 3 corners from
the end handing 3rd back to Vettel. Ostberg fell out the top 10!
Thus Neel Jani managed an unlikely 4th for Qatar, climbing 3 places on the final lap ahead of Haryanto, the HRTS, O'young, Ericcson and
the final point to a recovering Alguersuari. Kevin Ceccon narrowly misses out on a point in the high attrition race.
The stewarding panel announce that Red Bull, Williams and Nissan had done enough to qualify for the final. This is great news for the Nissan squad who have been running reliably with no problems and seem to have a decent amount of speed. It is now up to the final 3 heat winners to determine if Mark Webber has pole or not for Sundays Final.
Heat 2: Red
Massa dominated with pole, fastest lap and win. Paul di Resta shadowed him throughout with 2nd in every department.
The clearly not 100% Ferrari of Fernado Alonso was forced to concede to the on form cars of Will Power and Bruno Senna, both of whom drove very well on the slippery circuit.
Russian Time were quick, as were Porsche but both were hit by problems, both mechanical and driver related.
Antonio Felix Da Costa was a star in qualifying and was in 3rd place when he spun at the beginning of lap 2.
It was a Chaotic race with spins everywhere with the top 9 and Jaafar the only clean drivers.
Castroneves pitted lap 1 after breaking his front wing, Marussia had long pit stops for mechanical issues, Sutil spun multiple times and both Chevrolets retired with a
loose wheel issue! With Jaafar being passed for 10th on the last lap by Da Costa, it seems unlikely that Asiatech will have a better
chance at points all season.
Even though Massa dominated it was not enough to beat Webbers race time, so the best Fellipe will start is P2. Ferrari, Force India and Aston Martin are the teams that have been put forward for the final, with Will Power having a great chance as making it as one of the wild card runners.
Heat 3: Silver
Hulkenberg on pole from Perez with Honda 3rd and 4th.
Dixon rocketed to the front from the start.
Franchitti had a transmission failure on only the second lap as reliability problems were rampant in this heat.
Hulkenberg, Pagenaud and Kristensen all had failures from within the top 5.
Although there were less spinners, Perez still threw away 2nd place with a spin and Charles Pic lost 5th place with his
own spin.
Dixon went on to a dominant victory but a last lap electrical problem hurt his overall time. Button was a quiet 2nd
and Fellipe Nasr took an excellent 3rd for DAMS.
Wurz and Heidfeld should be thrilled with 4th and 5th place finishes whilst Spengler drove well to score a few
points for the awful BMW team.
Honda, McLaren and DAMS are the 3 teams fast enough to make the final after a disastrous race for the Sauber team. Dixon's last lap electrical problem seems to have doomed him to starting the final from 4th, but this is still a great result for the Ganassi run Honda team in what is their home race.

Ahead of the two Lotus and Lewis Hamilton.
Rosberg holds the lead as Hunter-Reay has a horrible start and drops to 6th.
Reliability is crippling in the heat as multiple transmissions fail. Hamitlon retires
first, problems hit both Lotus cars and both Toro Rossos. DOME look set to profit the most with
Buemi 2nd and Viso 4th only for chaos to fall on the last 2 laps and both DOME cars falling out the top 10.
Hunter Reay spins trying to recover ground putting him out the top 10.
Jerome D'Ambrosio, Andre Lotterer and Jamie Whincup profit from clean running to be well in the top 10.
Jamie Whincup smashes in to the back of a slowing Buemi and breaks the front wing, he is powerless to prevent
Michael Schumacher from passing him but after a collision with Ralf manages to hold a strong 6th.

Already there is controversy with the new age formula. After Friday practice it was clear that many teams were struggling with transmission issues after only a few laps of running. Not only this but the Watkins Glen circuit is very slippery with many drivers sliding on the cold surface of the track.
McLaren continue to claim that they are not facing any issues but after Friday running and pole posistion for Nico Hulkenberg for the heat race more questions appeared then answers. Mercedes seem to be showing the good form they had in testing and Massa beats Alonso.

Webber Pole from Maldonado, Vettel, Hinchcliffe, Muller and Ostberg. Bottas only 11th.
Maldonado had a great start and took the lead!
Plato stacked it at the start and forced himself, Alguersuari and Ellinas off the track,
on Alguersuari spun into the path of Al-Attiyah breaking the Qatari's front wing, Plato emerged ahead of
Albuerquerque and broke his front wing.
Duval spun to the back on lap 1.
Mortara, Hinchcliffe, Loeb and Bottas all retire from within the top 10 early in the race.
Webber took the lead from Maldonado at turn one on lap 7/9.
Muller has a water leak one lap from the end and the track gets very slippy.
Vettel spun at the inner loop on lap 9/9 and managed to avoid hitting anything but
dropped to 4th behind Ostberg. Kanaan was not so lucky hitting the tires heavily
and retireing from the race, a couple of other drivers nearly lost control but kept going.
Suzuki looked set to celebrate an unlikely podium place when Ostberg spun just 3 corners from
the end handing 3rd back to Vettel. Ostberg fell out the top 10!
Thus Neel Jani managed an unlikely 4th for Qatar, climbing 3 places on the final lap ahead of Haryanto, the HRTS, O'young, Ericcson and
the final point to a recovering Alguersuari. Kevin Ceccon narrowly misses out on a point in the high attrition race.
The stewarding panel announce that Red Bull, Williams and Nissan had done enough to qualify for the final. This is great news for the Nissan squad who have been running reliably with no problems and seem to have a decent amount of speed. It is now up to the final 3 heat winners to determine if Mark Webber has pole or not for Sundays Final.

Massa dominated with pole, fastest lap and win. Paul di Resta shadowed him throughout with 2nd in every department.
The clearly not 100% Ferrari of Fernado Alonso was forced to concede to the on form cars of Will Power and Bruno Senna, both of whom drove very well on the slippery circuit.
Russian Time were quick, as were Porsche but both were hit by problems, both mechanical and driver related.
Antonio Felix Da Costa was a star in qualifying and was in 3rd place when he spun at the beginning of lap 2.
It was a Chaotic race with spins everywhere with the top 9 and Jaafar the only clean drivers.
Castroneves pitted lap 1 after breaking his front wing, Marussia had long pit stops for mechanical issues, Sutil spun multiple times and both Chevrolets retired with a
loose wheel issue! With Jaafar being passed for 10th on the last lap by Da Costa, it seems unlikely that Asiatech will have a better
chance at points all season.
Even though Massa dominated it was not enough to beat Webbers race time, so the best Fellipe will start is P2. Ferrari, Force India and Aston Martin are the teams that have been put forward for the final, with Will Power having a great chance as making it as one of the wild card runners.

Franchitti had a transmission failure on only the second lap as reliability problems were rampant in this heat.
Hulkenberg, Pagenaud and Kristensen all had failures from within the top 5.
Although there were less spinners, Perez still threw away 2nd place with a spin and Charles Pic lost 5th place with his
own spin.
Dixon went on to a dominant victory but a last lap electrical problem hurt his overall time. Button was a quiet 2nd
and Fellipe Nasr took an excellent 3rd for DAMS.
Wurz and Heidfeld should be thrilled with 4th and 5th place finishes whilst Spengler drove well to score a few
points for the awful BMW team.
Honda, McLaren and DAMS are the 3 teams fast enough to make the final after a disastrous race for the Sauber team. Dixon's last lap electrical problem seems to have doomed him to starting the final from 4th, but this is still a great result for the Ganassi run Honda team in what is their home race.

Round 1: United States Grand Prix, Watkins Glen
This race will be the dubbed the race nobody wanted to win, it will also be famous for extreme tire wear.
The race started in dramatic fashion with once again Dixon in the Honda had a monster start and took the lead on the first lap, only for the car to grind to a halt just as the 2nd lap begun. Early reliability problems stuck several front runners with Webber, Maldonado and the 2nd Honda of Franchitti breaking down before the drivers could really stretch their legs, it seems Honda really need to work on their reliability issues. They can at least take heart from the speed of the car.
The early retirements left Rosberg the lead with Massa and Button in close pursuit. Further back Michael Schumacher and Vettel were fighting for 4th whilst Will Power had amazingly worked his way into the top 10 from starting 26th and last on the grid.
The track was no less slippery than during the heats as both Ford drivers and Sergio Perez found themselves on the grass on more than one occasion, the biggest driver error though came from Alonso as the Ferrari driver was making up ground he under-steered and crashed heavily into a tire wall, ending his race on the spot.
The pit stop window came and went and the top 3 stayed as they were, the big benefactor was Will Power who had managed to climb all the way up to 4th, beating Schumacher on strategy and Vettel on reliability as Red Bull recorded a disappointing double DNF. Will Power unfortunately did not hold 4th for long, spinning off into the gravel and losing many places in the process, he did manage to crawl out still at the foot of the top 10.
With 5 laps to go the race took a silly turn. Nico Rosberg with a healthy 3 second gap to a battling Massa and Button spun the car at the fast Inner Chicane section, he did a perfect 1080 spin and kept the car going, but in the process Massa and Button slipped by, thus dropping Nico to 3rd. Massa had no time to enjoy the lead as half a lap later he spun himself, this time far enough in the gravel to let the leaders, Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and the consistent Aston Martin pair through.
You would normally be safe to assume Jenson Button would be a safe bet at holding first place but a lap later he spun on some grass himself and dropped back to 2nd place gifting Nico the lead once more. Only for a lap and a half later Nico Rosberg dropped it in the gravel! dropping him all the way to 8th place.
Jenson Button took the lead once again and this time knew to take things extra carefully to record a famous, even if bizzare, first win in Formula 52 history. Michael Schumacher had not put a wheel wrong all weekend and his superior experience meant simply not chucking the car away gave him a very creditable 2nd place finish. The battle for 3rd place was not over though, Lewis Hamilton after putting in a decent recovery drive span at the inner chicane just like Nico Rosberg dropping him behind Massa and the Aston's. Massa managed to get past Huff with a few laps to go and was all over Senna over the final lap, lunging past him at the final corner to give Ferrari a podium in a race he knows he could have won.
So, a race dominated by the tricky circuit, with Rosberg, Massa and even Power all having a shot at victory thrown away by spins giving McLaren the first win of the series, there we go, McLaren said they were not in a crisis!
The series has 3 championships running, a championship just for Final appearances, a championship for Heat and Final appearances and a constructors championship.

Red Bull dominate the race from lights to flag, Vettel having the edge over team mate Webber. Yvan Muller looked like he would be scoring an impressive 3rd place only for a last lap throttle issue preventing him from accessing full power allowed the Arrows of Seb Loeb by. This was a crippling blow to the Prost team, as Duval only in 10th means they have not done enough to reach the final, Red Bull, Arrows and a mediocre Williams side go through. Alguersuari and Jani drive well to be inside the top 8 as Dallara pretty much failed to turn up in Interlagos, the reliability this round was much better than in Watkins Glenn.
Will Power got a great start off the line and never looked backed, Ferrari seemed content just to play it safe and take 2nd and 3rd giving Penske and Power their first heat win. With Force India behind them and Castroneves completing the top 6 it is very easy to see the top 3 teams in this heat, Penske, Ferrari and Force India advance to the final. The battle for the scraps was much more entertaining as Jules Bianchi, Felix da Costa and Hilderbrand fought hard for 8th with Bianchi finally stealing the place overtaking both of them in one move. Surprise constructors championship leaders Aston Martin could only scrape 1 point through Bruno Senna as improved reliability around the circuit hurts the team. Benoit Treluyer had a day to forget, smashing his front wing on the first corner before having to retire when his engine spectacularly burst into flames. Power's time was faster than the Red Bull's so it is possible he may even start the final from pole!
Perez may have won the 3rd heat at a canter but the real stars were Valsecchi and Pic for managing to keep championship leader Button behind them. It was a mediocre heat for Sauber with the Hulk a disappointing 7th around the track he usually loves, however it is enough to qualify with Gutierrez in 5th and Giedo Van der Garde down in 20th Sauber advance along with McLaren and DAMS, leaving Caterham out in the cold bar a wildcard entry for Pic. Honda will be disappointed with only 8th, Scott Dixon was running in the low end of the top 10 before electrical problems struck but it was most certainly an underwhelming performance compared to "the Glen"
The battle for 9th stretched almost to the back of the field with Petrov pushing a difficult Hyundai to it's limits to earn 2 points for 9th. Gary Paffet takes the poweful Mercedes engined Prodrive to 10th denying the awful Zytek powered Lola of Heidfeld the final point, an injustice! Sebastian Bourdais spinning by himself on the grass and Michelisz's minardi grinding to a halt make up the other highlights.
Daniel Ricciardo starred in qualifying and from 2nd on the grid took the lead with a very tidy start. Though Hamilton seems to have been on a different plane to everyone else since practice and overtook him on lap 3 to romp home to a massive victory and with it pole for the feature race. It was not all smiles from Mercedes, as Rosberg ground to a halt on only the 2nd lap in a heat with more retirements than the others put together. Bacheta most notably understeered at high speed in the barriers and was fortunate to emerge unhurt, the car was in a less good situation, completely ruined. As Ricciardo finished in 2nd, Lotus this time had no mechanical issues and qualify for the final with a safe 3rd and 4th, along with Mercedes and Ford. The Ford team being given the nod over Toro Rosso with Ricciardo the 2nd wild card alongside Caterham's Pic. DOME were competitive for a 2nd race weekend running both scoring good points as their cars managed to hold together whilst engine mates Super Aguri also would have ended up with double points if not for knocked loose wheel on Sato's car. Leaving Michael Schumacher to feed on the final point, the feature race podium man off the pace around Interlagos and lucky to fend off the two TOMS Toyota's. Ralf Schumacher had a spin and was just rubbish in general.
