IIDOTR for other Motorsports
IIDOTR for other Motorsports
Like the title says. I'll start off right with Danny Sullivan's spin and win at the Indy 500. He qualified 8th, and about halfway through the race, he passed Mario Andretti for the lead, but made an error, and spun out. He made a brilliant recovery, and went on to win the race.

Derek Cope unrejectifying himself with a win at the 1990 Daytona 500. A very lucky, but great win for him. One of the biggest upsets in the race's history.

Re: IIDOTR for other Motorsports
Already posted this one in the Gilles Villeneuve thread, but worth mentioning again - pretty much sums up IIDOTR :
I'll try to think of some more ...
Also this, ok so it's motorbikes, but Ralf Waldmann making up 36 seconds in the last 3 laps to take the win at Donington - even coming into the last corner it doesn't seem possible :

P.S. Great commentary by Julian Ryder and Toby Moody on this clip.

BTCC in the wet at Brands Hatch in 1995. Privateer driver (none of this "independent" malarkey then!) Charlie Cox gets up to sixth place before spinning down to about 14th but races back through to fifth by the flag.
Two weeks after this he had one of the biggest rollovers the BTCC has ever seen at Thruxton.

And that just shows why I wanted Waldmann to win the 250cc titles over Biaggi.

2004 Symmons Plains V8 Supercars - David Besnard/WPS Racing, for fooling the race officials/lap scorers by pitting at the right time, coming out in the lead but not being picked up by the safety car. The error was realised after the race, and Besnard was awarded the win, almost a lap ahead of the original winner.
This is a cool spot.

My thoughts exactly. Starting in the wet, the guy was 11th by the fifth corner or so, and then proceeded to catch and pass the big boys like they were on push bikes. Stupendous stuff.
Stay home, Colin Kolles!

David Gilliland- 2006 Meijer 300.
In his first 4 races, his best finish was 29th in a privateer, underfunded car. He then won his 5th race and hasn't won since.

1992 Indianapolis 500 - Althouh Al Unser Jr. and Scott Goodyear run in good contention, I'll hand it to "Big" Al Unser. He entered Indy at the very last minute, replacing Nelson Piquet. Then he ran his Lola all the way to third place. With a Buick nonetheless! If Little Al and Scott had crashed out (Which was definitely possible in this crashfest of a race), Big Al would have brought Buick's very first victory at Indy!

Hildebrand at Indy is one of the rare occasions where you could give IIDOTR and ROTR for the same person.

It might be fun to see how many of those one could find.

Another McRae moment would be him at the 2002 Cyprus Rally. He rolled the car 3 times, got lost at one point, but still managed to finish 6th.

No he deserves ROTR for that one. He should have won that fair and square. If it's a controversial opinion i'll give it the to the buffoon who gave McRae a wrong split time because that really triggered those bizarre events that followed including him having to push the car to service after it died on him

Re: IIDOTR for other Motorsports
I have a series of IIDOTR for the Indy 500.
1970 Indy 500: Lloyd Ruby, 25th to 15th by end of first lap and top ten by lap 4 then took lead at lap 50 before having a drive gear break just three laps later to finish 27th.
1972 Indy 500: Sammy Sessions took a car from 24th to 4th and was last on the same lap as the leader. This car was 26th fastest in qualifying of all the cars.
1974 Indy 500: Johnny Rutherford won after starting 25th. Even having the 2nd fastest car in qualifying would make this a handful given the poor starting position on the inside of row 9. Jim McElreath also charged from 30th to 6th in this same race, but well off the pace six laps down.
1979 Indy 500: Bill Vukovich II finished 8th after having to make the field from 34th due to a special qualifying session.
1980 Indy 500: Tom Sneva, the only driver to have led the 500 from starting 33rd or last. Finished 2nd. Gary Bettenhausen tailed Sneva most of the day to charge from 32nd to 3rd also finishing on the lead lap with the slowest car in qualifying.
1981 Indy 500: Former winner Mario Andretti charged from 32nd to 2nd leading 12 laps.
1983 Indy 500: Rookie Teo Fabi qualified in pole position outqualifying Indy veteran Mike Mosley by over 2 mp/h. Led 23 laps but failed to finish due to damage in the fuel system.
1984 Indy 500: Rookies, as in the top five had three of them with Roberto Guerrero in 2nd, Al Holbert in 4th, and Michael Andretti in 5th place.
1987 Indy 500: Al Unser won after being named the replacement for injured F1 reject Danny Ongais thus starting from 20th position, avoided the car of Josele Garza with little damage, and led the final 18 laps to become the oldest Indy 500 winner.
