Not if I have anything to say about it, seeing as he's my driver! I'd understand if he'd been crap all year but he is right up there in the hunt for the title! What would be the motivation for dropping him?

Thanks for bumping this thread, guys.

Again I apologise for lack of activity, this WILL continue (rFAF1 is like my baby), but I've been lacking of time and sometimes motivation of late, as I've just completed the transistion into college. As I'm getting used to things, there will definitely be some rFAF1 action coming up soon.

Pi, your entry has been accepted!

AxelP800 seen as no-one else has volunteered to take over Lotus, the team is now yours. As AndreaModa said, dropping Harvey would be a bad idea: He's been thwarted by bad luck this season so far.

As for tests and upgrades, tests will be going ahead this time, I'll sort that all out this week, also any planned driver changes for the next round should be announced now.

Thank you for your patience!

Speaking of tests, Renault would like to hold a test following the British GP, which will be at Thruxton. More details will be released later, but we will confrim that Canadian James Generic will be one of the participants, along with Emanuele Nicchi (should Restov permit), and American IndyCar sensation Brendon Cassidy.

1980 British Grand Prix // Donington Park // Weather: Dry

Pre-Race

* The Toleman Team are on of 3 new entrants appearing at the British Grand Prix. Ted Toleman has managed to secure an old BT48 chasiss and a Honda engine deal, and with recently sacked Carlos Reutemann at the wheel, provided things dont go boom they should be in for a competitive season.
*Team Minardi will also make their debut, with Ginacarlo Mainardi stepping up his F2 operations. Driving for the team will be family friend Giancarlo Martini, who drove for Minardi at his previous F2 outfit.
*The third team to join the grid are less professional. Steve Smith Racing, run by the slightly chubby wheeler-dealer mechanic Steve Smith, have managed to band together enough money to join the F1 circus. Well, when I say that, I mean Steve got more than he bargained for from selling an old jag, and managed to buy a knackered old FW06 chassis to partner a Ford Cosworth DFV he found in a Transit he picked up on the Goldhawk Road. Still, somehow Steve managed to get CART prodigy Brendon Cassidy to make his Formula One debut for the team, but the rumour is that Steve insisted he'd bought an FW07 with a Renault engine and by the time Cassidy found out it was too late. Ah, well.

Steve Smith Racing are my team. The idea is that I get one of the worst chassis and engines available, and try to qualify for every race. The team is for people who want a really rejectful fictional driver to have a historical background, or a place to start a fictional driver's career, or for someone to have a rejectful fictional one off. I'm not trying to win my own series or anything.

Autosport wrote:Harvey Jones admits to being "unhappy" at Lotus, set to sit out '81

Harvey Jones has publicly stated his discontent at the situation developing at the front-running Lotus team in Formula 1 this year. Jones, currently second in the championship to teammate and namesake Alan Jones, is in his second year with the British team, with two years spent previously at Tyrrell, after making his F1 debut with Theodore in 1976.

"I'm unhappy with what's been going on at the team for the past few months" Jones told reporters yesterday evening, "there's been next to no development of the 81 this year and it's showing in our results. The car is hopelessly unreliable, and neither me nor Alan ever know if it will actually make the finish of a race without throwing us off the road with component failure or attempting to recreate the effect a hand grenade would have on a V6 turbo engine."

"That said, I'm growing tired of the racing scene at the present time, and I'm considering some time away to enjoy with my wife and young son Sammy. I'm looking forward to pushing to the end of the year and hopefully clinching the championship, but after that, I'll be taking a year's sabbatical from the sport to re-assess where I stand with it all, and if I feel like continuing on with it. I've spoken to Colin and he's happy with my decision. I believe the team have a couple of drivers that they have been eyeing up, so I've no doubt there is a plan in place for when I depart."

"As for 1982, I have no offers or plans, as I said, I will evaluate it all closer to the time and if I fancy a return to the cockpit, I'm happy with any position available. I'm realistic enough to know that I won't just walk back into a top team like Lotus after a year out, but hopefully if I do return, I'll be as competitive as I have been in the past couple of years."

So to clarify, I'm cutting back my commitments, and with the on-off nature of this series it's pretty hard to follow so for the time being I'll pull back from it at the end of the 1980 season. If it's still about for 1982 I might look to re-enter if a position becomes available, we'll see.

Nicchi was running towards the rear of the field, around 16/17 of about 20 when he retired. Brancatelli managed to work himself up to 10th/11th before his engine pulled the plug.

1980 German Grand Prix // Hockenheimring

Pre-Race

* Callum McAllister received a one-race ban for dangerous driving, leading Guillaume Gauthier to the Williams seat. Dereck Warwick again stepped in at McLaren to cover for Gauthier.
* Steve Smith Racing elected not to travel to Germany, citing 'lack of funds'. The real reason may have something to do with Steve's mistrust of Germans after an incident with some bloke called Klaus. Apparently he was a 'right muppet'.

Quali:
Image

Race:

Notes:

Carlos Reutemann had a phenomenal start, leaping into the lead. However, it became apparent that the Toleman's race pace wasn't all that, and he proceeded to hold up the entire field. Scheckter managed to get past after a few laps, and even though Jones did finally manage to get by 10 laps later, Scheckter was too far in front.

Reutemann was out after a hilarious spin at the Senna chicane.

RejectSport wrote:IndyCar star Cassidy to switch to F1?

Rumours are now rife in the Formula 1 paddock that defending IndyCar champion Brendon Cassidy is eying up a switch to Formula 1 for the 1981 season. Cassidy, 25, made his first F1 appearance for Steve Smith Racing at the British Grand Prix this year, where evidently he impressed the Renault bosses enough to earn an invite to the French manufacturer's test at Thruxton. While Cassidy was reported as only 4th fastest of 5 drivers, he was only 6-7 tenths off their main drivers Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Jeremy-Etienne Voeckler, despite this being only his 2nd time in a Formula 1 car. Renault boss Jean Sage said of Cassidy's performance, "It was a very impressive test for someone unused to the cars and tracks of Europe. It is quite clear that Brendon is a very very talented driver, and I would not be surprised at all if he was offered a place on the Formula 1 grid for next season."

Cassidy himself remains nonplussed by the idea of switching to F1, saying, "Yeah, I'd be interested if I got a decent offer. I mean, the cars are pretty fun to drive, so I might give a shot for a year or two, see what happens. There'd have to be an allowance for me to go and race the Indy 500 though, probably."

Cassidy currently leads the IndyCar championship, having won 3 races so far this season, including the Indianapolis 500.

Everything's great.
I'm not surprised about anything.

Autosprint wrote:Nurmester sacked from Osella

In a shocking move, Osella Squadra Corse has fired their British lead driver Thomas Nurmester with immediate effect. Although the Brit has qualified the car far more often than his team mates Eddie Cheever and Siegfried Stohr and even scored points with a 5th at the Monaco GP, the team claims that Nurmester has "failed to adjust to Osella's working culture" which has lead to "an ongoing breakdown between the relations of the driver and the team".

The team has already announced that Italian Michele Alboreto, currently driving in F3 and WSC, will replace Nurmester starting from the Austrian GP.

Thomas Nurmester wrote:Screw them! I've hauled that piece of garbage car to places where it shouldn't be, and they thank me by doing this? I've merely criticized the car quite a few times, but for a good reason... Now I must hope that Tyrrell were impressed enough with my recent test performance for them so I can get back racing soon.
