Pre-Brazil:

Last time out, the excrement hit the fan in the Brawn GP camp. This time, Red Bull simply imploded on themselves as they tore up Mark Webber's 2010 contract and decided that it'll be a straight fight between Sebastian Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari for the vacant Red Bull seat, although they have been rumoured to have joined McLaren, Brawn, Renault and Force India in the all-out brawl to get Daniel Melrose's signature for 2010. While the last race at Suzuka was part of the reasoning for Red Bull's decision, a much bigger role was played by the fact that Webber hasn't scored a point since Silverstone, which was 7 races ago. Force India are also allegedly in the process of signing on British hotshot Nathan McKane as a reserve driver for 2010 or even possibly as a race driver for the foreseeable future.

Round 16 - Brazil

Qualifying:

Usually, when Daniel Melrose decides to go over a second quicker than anyone else on his very first lap, one asks who's the poor sod that's pissed him off yet again. This time however, he was absolutely going for it simply because he could. So quick in fact, that he broke Rhys Davies' 2001 lap record at Interlagos by just under a tenth of a second with one of the most incredible laps of his career, right up there with his "Lap of legends" at Monte Carlo in 2007. Dave Simpson narrowly missed out on joining his teammate on the front row while in the battle for the second Red Bull seat, Buemi just edged Alguersuari for 16th and 17th.

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. J. Button (Brawn-Mercedes)
3. D. Simpson (BMW)
4. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault)
5. M. Webber (RBR-Renault)
6. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
7. B. Senna (Brawn-Mercedes)
8. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
9. H. Kovalainen (Williams-Toyota)
10. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
11. N. Rosberg (Williams-Toyota)
12. F. Alonso (Renault)
13. T. Glock (Toyota)
14. J. Trulli (Toyota)

16. S. Buemi (STR-Ferrari)
17. J. Alguersuari (STR-Ferrari)
18. A. Sutil (Force India-Mercedes)
19. R. Grosjean (Renault)
20. P. McAllister (Force India-Mercedes)
21. S. Speed (USF1-Cosworth)
22. D. Patrick (USF1-Cosworth)

Race:

After Singapore, the man had absolutely nothing yet to prove as Daniel Melrose is already going down into the record books, much like compatriots Rhys Davies and Sir Jack Brabham, as one of the very best of all time. He's overtaken both Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna in the all time wins records and has obliterated pretty much every other record in the book this season, but even so, he's still driving with the same determination, passion and aggression he has shown all year and he's being rewarded for it. Teammate Dave Simpson could use some of that luck as after being in the running for a podium spot early on, his suspension collapsed and once it turned out Jenson Button was running lighter than most of the field, it was as far as the race was concerned. Mark Webber eventually took that podium spot thanks to a wheel attempting but failing to make a bid for freedom on teammate Sebastian Vettel's car. Simpson's retirement had more significant implications than the podium however as with Button finishing second and Bruno Senna in 5th at his home track, Brawn only need to score 8 points in Abu Dhabi to wrap up the title. In order for BMW to win, they need a 1-2 and neither Brawn car to be in the top 4 in the race which is much easier said than done. Nico Rosberg kept Williams' resurgance as of late going with a point in 8th behind the absolutely irate Vettel and ahead of the incredibly quiet Kimi Raikkonen.

Dave Simpson to get Rally Australia run with MINI - 27th of August 2011

After a recent deal which sees the Australian Minardi F1RWRS team receive BMW customer engines, former F1 tester Dave Simpson is set to rally one of the new MINI Countryman WRC's at Rally Australia, held in Simpson's home town of Coffs Harbour. The MINI team weren't planning to compete in this event until Simpson wanted to run a WRC car in the event (it was expected that he would rally a Fiesta if the Ford deal went through).
This is a cool spot.

Solberg takes surprise stage win.
Image
Henning Solberg #15 by TheStig13, on Flickr [/selfpromotion]

On the first run of the Welshes stage it was the older of the Solberg brothers, Henning who took a surprising stage win at the wheel of his M-Sport Fiesta, by .9 of a second over Sebastien Loeb. Mikko Hirvonen was the first of the factory Ford drivers in 3rd, while Petter Solberg was 4th. Another surprise was former F1 driver and hometown hero Dave Simpson, taking out 5th in the Mini. beating both Ogier and Latvala. Hayden Paddon was the first of the PWRC runners in 10th position.

Results after stage 1:
1. Henning Solberg - 3:36.93
2. Sebastien Loeb - 3:37.80
3. Mikko Hirvonen - 3:39.09
4. Petter Solberg - 3:39.84
5. Dave Simpson - 3:40.50
6. Sebastien Ogier - 3:40.51
7. Jari Matti Latvala - 3:41.23
8. Kimi Raikonnen - 3:43.78
9. Matthew Wilson - 3:44.34
10. Hayden Paddon - 3:46.47

If anyone's wondering, the game I'm using for this is WRC 2 (no, not the old PS2 version either, the new one based on the 2011 season) and no, the graphics aren't as good as that picture either (it's a picture I took at Rally Australia last year).

Solberg proves first stage pace is no fluke.
The second stage of the rally, Coldwater, proved that Henning Solberg's first stage pace was no fluke, by taking out another stage win. Possibly more surprising was the second place finisher for the stage, Dave Simpson, driving in the WRC for the first time in his racing career. Simpson now sits 4th in the overall standings. Hirvonen was again third, followed by Loeb and Latvala. PWRC leader Hayden Paddon retired from the rally after mechanical problems, handing the PWRC lead to Jukka Ketomaki, who is 12th overall at the moment.

Results after stage 2:
1. Henning Solberg - 7:34.26
2. Sebastien Loeb - 7:36.95
3. Mikko Hirvonen - 7:37.28
4. Dave Simpson - 7:38.50
5. Jari-Matti Latvala - 7:41.21
6. Petter Solberg - 7:42.15
7. Sebastien Ogier - 7:43.39
8. Kimi Raikonnen - 7:48.02
9. Matthew Wilson - 7:53.27
10. Daniel Oliveira - 7:58.85
...
12. Jukka Ketomaki - 8:02.32

Loeb wins stage 4, Solberg still leads.

In stage 4, Henning Solberg's dominance of the rally came to an end, the Norwegian only posting the 4th fastest time. This stage was won by Loeb, .9 of a second faster than second placed Latvala. Dave Simpson was on course for a top 3 time, however he spun and only managed 6th spot. Loeb has closed the gap to Solberg to 1.22 seconds, with Hirvonen a further 3 seconds back. Jukka Ketomaki still leads the PWRC class in 13th place.

Standings after stage 4.
1. Henning Solberg - 15:21.35
2. Sebastien Loeb - +1.22
3. Mikko Hirvonen - +4.34
4. Jari Matti Latvala - +8.93
5. Dave Simpson - +11.90
6. Petter Solberg - +16.51
7. Sebastien Ogier - +18.79
8. Kimi Raikonnen - +34.33
9. Matthew Wilson - +35.52
10. Peter Van Merksteijn jr - +40.40
...
13. Jukka Ketomaki - +48.03

Simpson takes stage win, Solberg increases lead.

Local hero Dave Simpson has taken out the 5th stage of the rally, ahead of Mikko Hirvonen, by over 2 seconds. Sebastien Loeb could only manage a 6th placing on this stage, and drops behind Hirvonen to third. Henning Solberg remains in the lead of the rally by 3.4 seconds with only one stage left. With the stage win, Simpson moves to 4th but won't be challenging for a podium barring a mistake from the leading trio. Ketomaki still leads the PWRC.

Standings after stage 5:
1. Henning Solberg - 19:01.80
2. Mikko Hirvonen +3.42
3. Sebastien Loeb +3:50
4. Dave Simpson +8.30
5. Jari Matti Latvala +10.27
6. Petter Solberg +18.38
7. Sebastien Ogier +23.26
8. Kimi Raikonnen +39.90
9. Matthew Wilson +48.84
10. Daniel Oliveira +50.58
...
13. Jukka Ketomaki +59.79

Solberg takes first WRC Rally win in Australia
Henning Solberg dominated Rally Australia, after winning four of the six stages of the rally. WRC newcomer Dave Simpson surprised even himself after winning a stage and taking 4th overall. Hirvonen finished second overall, 4.3 seconds back on Solberg, while Loeb only finished 3rd, 5 seconds off Solberg. Jukka Ketomaki won the PWRC class from Gianluca Linari and Majed Al Shamsi.

Re: FORCDA 2010 Season

Post by TomWazzleshaw »

Pre-Abu Dhabi:

The press was focused on the Force India team in the buildup to the first ever Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as the team signed on British rookie Nathan McKane, allegedly one of the very best drivers in the world, as one of their drivers for 2010. Adrian Sutil is expected to keep his drive and spearhead the Force India outfit as they look to join the midfield on a more permanent basis next season. Peter Sauber meanwhile has bought back his team from BMW, saving the future of the Hinwil squad but this brought up a very interesting question as to who the drivers will be for next year. With Daniel Melrose looking elsewhere for a drive and Dave Simpson bailing to the F1RWRS and looking at becoming the third driver for Williams, Peter Sauber will have to hire two completely new drivers for 2010. He's rumoured to be looking at putting Toyota test driver Kamui Kobayashi in one of those seats in exchange of free Toyota powerplants but the second seat is anyone's guess.

Round 17 - Abu Dhabi

Qualifying:

If Daniel Melrose's pole lap two weeks ago in Brazil was from the very top drawer, then his pole lap at Abu Dhabi was arguably even better as immediately he got "hooked up" with the new circuit and was reveling as a result. Dave Simpson did his best to stay with his teammate but he was still over a second and a half away from his compatriot's blistering pace. Even so, if the grid replicated itself in the race with Jenson Button third and Bruno Senna only 8th, it'ld be enough for BMW to take the constructors championship which would be an incredible achievement considering it has basically been a one man show from Munich. For two people whose Formula One careers could end tomorrow evening, Mark Webber and Kimi Raikkonen spent the entire session looking like they couldn't care less and as a result will only line up 7th and 10th for what could possibly be their final races. Mind you, Webber was still pretty close to his teammate Sebastian Vettel and Raikkonen did beat his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella.

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. D. Simpson (BMW)
3. J. Button (Brawn-Mercedes)
4. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
5. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
6. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault)
7. M. Webber (RBR-Renault)
8. B. Senna (Brawn-Mercedes)
9. F. Alonso (Renault)
10. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
11. H. Kovalainen (Williams-Toyota)
12. J. Trulli (Toyota)
13. N. Rosberg (Williams-Toyota)
14. T. Glock (Toyota)
15. G. Fisichella (Ferrari)
16. J. Alguersuari (STR-Ferrari)
17. S. Buemi (STR-Ferrari)
18. A. Sutil (Force India-Mercedes)
19. P. McAllister (Force India-Mercedes)
20. R. Grosjean (Renault)
21. S. Speed (USF1-Cosworth)
22. D. Patrick (USF1-Cosworth)

Race:

107 races ago, a young Australian made his Formula 1 debut at his home ground as the youngest ever driver to participate in a race. The F1 world was divided over him and Ferrari's decision to push him into F1 at such a young age. Some said that the kid was the "saviour" of F1 based on his blistering form in the junior categories. Others said that it'd far too early to push the man into F1 and that it was a monumental error. 107 races later and that young man, having only officially started 104 of them due to injury, and that man proved all the doubters wrong and has gone on to be one of the very best the world has ever seen. That man has made everyone laugh, cry, cheer and swear to the high heavens through all the incredible highs and lows of his career. It's scarcely believable that only the puncture at Valencia stopped him from winning every single race this year after he dominated the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and took his 16th win for the year and it's nigh on impossible to fathom that this could be the last time we ever see the man in a Formula One car as he's still yet to get a contract for 2010 with a Formula One team.

Onto the rest of the field and BMW's tilt for the Constructors title was over by lap 3 when, almost predictably, Dave Simpson's transmission gave up on him, much to the obvious frustration of his teammate over the radio who wanted him to do well to give him the sendoff he deserved for a career that could have been oh so different were it not for fate intervening time and time again. Jenson Button may have only finished third behind Lewis Hamilton but the team had done enough to win the constructors championship which is an incredible achievement for the team in its first year, especially when they haven't won a race all year. Sammy Jones ended his association with McLaren on a high in 4th place while Sebastian Vettel lost out to Jones in 5th place. Bruno Senna scored some more points in 6th as he looks for a full time ride next year while Nico Rosberg and Jarno Trulli rounded out the points.

2010 ENTRY LIST:

Mercedes GP Petronas F1 Team
1. Daniel Melrose
2. Nico Rosberg
T/D. Nick Heidfeld

Brawn were bought out by the Mercedes team during the off-season and they used this to their advantage to snare Daniel Melrose by offering a one year contract for both the F1RWRS (Through a collaboration through JLD/Porsche) and Formula One where Melrose will decide his future at the end of the year. Phoenix McAllister, Dave Simpson and Sammy Jones all reportedly are running similar contracts but out of all those, only McAllister looks likely to stay in F1 beyond 2010. With Melrose on board, Mercedes look the favourites for the championship but the quality of Nico Rosberg is still a mystery as he looks to establish a name for himself.

BMW Sauber Ferrari
3. Dave Simpson
4. Kamui Kobayashi
T/D. Sergio Perez, Christian Klien

You have to give kudos to Peter Sauber for firstly sticking with Kamui Kobayashi despite the promise of Toyota engines never arriving with the manufacturer pulling out of the sport and secondly for burying the rumoured hatched with Dave SImpson and hired him as their lead driver which, while not going to replicate the incredible form of the past few seasons, proves that the team is ready to rebuild after the BMW bailout. Thanks to a glitch in the hurriedly drafted Concord agreement, the BMW name has to remain on the car for 2010

Red Bull Renault
5. Sebastian Vettel
6. Sebastien Bourdais
T/D. Brendon Hartley/Daniel Ricciardo

In a nutshell, Red Bull told Alguersuari, Buemi and Webber to get stuffed and promoted third driver Sebastian Bourdais to the second Red Bull seat to recreate the 2008 Toro Rosso dream team. They look to be in the epic fight with Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, Rhys Davies' Williams and Renault for the major points finishes

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
7. Jenson Button
8. Lewis Hamilton
T/D. Gary Paffert/Pedro De La Rosa

Whilst Lewis Hamilton was completely outclassed by Melrose and new teammate Jenson Button last year, he still put in some top-class drives and shows that he's all business in 2010. With Jenson Button moving off the back of the year of his career, the team look like a formidable force in 2010.

Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro
9. Fernando Alonso
10. Phoenix McAllister
T/D. Marc Gene/Jules Bianchi

Where did it all go so wrong for Ferrari? From championship contenders in the past few years, their fall from grace was simply embarrassing to watch as they crashed to only 27 points and not a single trip to the podium. Luca Badoer and Felipe Massa were the first to go before Kimi Raikkonen and Giancarlo Fisichella was also shown the door along with many backroom staff with Stefano Domincalli also facing the sack should the team continue to struggle in 2010. However with established talent Fernando Alonso and the up and coming Phoenix McAllister in the lineup, there's no reason to believe that they won't contend for the championship again

RubberTex Renault F1 Team
11. Sammy Jones
12. Robert Kubica
T/D. Vitaly Petrov/Jerome D'Ambrosio

With Alonso heading for higher ground and Romain Grosjean demoted to GP2 duties, two new faces were hired by the Renault team in the form of F1's nearly man Sammy Jones and the talented yet inconsistent BMW refugee Robert Kubica which shows, like Ferrari, they ready to rebuild after several years of being, frankly, crap. Thanks to Jones' connections back in Britain, Novelty item manufacturer RubberTex have jumped onboard as title sponsors of the team as long as Jones is associated with them.

Kingfisher Force India F1 Team Mercedes
14. Adrian Sutil
15. Nathan McKane
T/D. Paul Di Resta/Vitantonio Liuzzi

After their giant-killing performances at Belgium and Italy last year, the team look to convert those results into making real gains and possibly even join the midfield in 2010. While Liuzzi is still reportedly furious he didn't get the second seat alongside incumbent Adrian Sutil, Nathan McKane is relatively experienced for a rookie and will look to impress in his first year in Formula One.

AT&T Williams Cosworth
16. Heikki Kovalainen
17. Rhys Davies
T/D. Valtteri Bottas

Desperate times call for desperate measures at the Williams team and the gambles of switching to the Cosworth V8 as well as signing three time World Champion Rhys Davies onto the team could either lead them back to glory or backfire spectacularly, which in this day and age would be nothing short of an unmitigated disaster for the future of the team. Heikki Kovalainen in the second seat will be a solid number two, if nothing else.

Scuderia Toro Rosso Ferrari
18. Sebastian Buemi
19. Jaime Alguersuari
T/D. Daniel Ricciardo/Brendon Hartley

Four into two for 2011 simply won't go so the pressure is on Sebastian Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari to prove their worth after both were overlooked by the A-Team for Webber's vacated seat as their are two very capable young men in Daniel Ricciardo and Brendon Hartley looking to steal their seats at the team

Lotus Racing Cosworth
20. Timo Glock
21. Bruno Senna
T/D. Fairuz Fauzy

With the surprise withdrawal of Toyota from Formula One as they became the latest victim of the GFC and the breakaway saga, Tony Fernandes was given the slot with his Lotus Racing effort, in collaboration with Manor Racing. Fernandes chose former Brawn driver Bruno Senna for one seat, hoping that he'll deliver some good performances while Manor Racing chose Timo Glock in the other seat to help lead the development of the team. While they may not be competitive immediately, don't be surprised to see them spring a surprise or two.

HRT F1 Team Cosworth
22. Mark Webber
23. Adrian Rees
T/D. Karun Chandhok/Sakon Yamamoto

The crazy Americans at USF1 closed shop at the end of the year and sold everything to the equally crazy Adrian Campos, Colin Kolles and all their merry men at Europe and immediately it showed that they have very little money to play with as they signed on Karun Chandhok, Sakon Yamamoto and Adrian Rees all for their sponsorship dollars. Red Bull refugee Mark Webber has been given the undesirable role of trying to make something out of the crapbox of a car he's certain to be given.

The first pre-season test will be done when I can be bothered.

Since GP4 can hold only 17 races at a time and the 2010 mod I have doesn't work with CSM, I've figured out that the two missing tracks are Europe and Korea. Since nobody ever liked the European GP we can just claim it was dropped for the year. Korea however is a different story but I've already got it figured out that Melrose will miss that race due to injury (Side note: I never made up the dental surgery story, I actually did have dental surgery to have my wisdom teeth removed the week before the Korean GP in real life, which caused me to miss the rest of the week at school, which incidentally was also the week before my year 9 yearly examinations.)

EDIT: What this means is Rhys will run the 2010 Korean GP as if it were his career as I'm under the impression he has both F1 2010 and F1 2011 plus he has the option as to whether to run the 2010 European GP or not.

Oh, and I've finally put the Rally Australia results up, if anyone is interested.

Barcelona Pre-Season Test:

It was a testament to just how good last year's BMW was in the hands of Daniel Melrose as nobody was able to even look like holding a candle to last year's blistering pace. Indeed, the fastest time set by Sebastian Vettel was a mammoth 3.5 seconds slower that last year's best and Melrose was stranded in 8th, over 4 seconds away from that mark. Not all hope is lost at the Mercedes camp though as the 7 tenth gap between Vettel and Melrose in 8th shows that we are in for possibly one of the best seasons in living memory. Coupled with the fact that the midfield is also ultra close and Timo Glock and Mark Webber with points to prove with the two new teams and suddenly you got the prospect of chaos throughout the field. Sebastian Bourdais was immediately right on the pace by being just over a tenth off Vettel's pace with Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso also getting within 2 tenths of the "Wunderkid". Sammy Jones and Rhys Davies look like the ones most likely to upset the applecart up front as the season starts while Adrian Rees looked horribly out of his depth in last place, almost a second behind Bruno Senna in 21st.

1. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault): 1:22.190

Process of elimination. Webber only scored points once since GB last year and Red Bull then decided that Ammermuller wasn't worth the trouble, most of the test drivers were too inexperienced and that the two Toro Rosso guys were frankly crap. Therefore it only left one slightly logical choice

Silverstone Pre-Season Test:

One could have forgiven Mercedes and Daniel Melrose in particular for being slow at Barcelona. However, the alarm bells are certainly ringing now with Melrose absolutely nowhere yet again, in fact in a car which has his Achilles heel in the form of understeer by the bucketloads, he was only a miserable 13th by day's end, behind the likes of both Renaults, both Williamses and Adrian Sutil's Force India. Up front and it was Sebastien Bourdais' turn to head the timesheets from teammate Sebastian Vettel and the two McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. Nico Rosberg beat Phoenix McAllister for 6th and 7th places while Timo Glock and Mark Webber continued to show that the new Lotus and Hispania cars have some potential in them.

1. S. Bourdais (RBR-Renault): 1:32.603
2. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault): +0.029
3. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes): +0.263

Round 1 - Bahrain

Qualifying:

There's probably nothing more frustrating for Daniel Melrose than to have a car that feels alright to drive and yet get absolutely no reward for pushing it to the absolute limit as yet again, he didn't look like threatening the guys up front and will line up 8th for the race, almost a second off pole. The man who got that pole was Sebastian Bourdais with a last-gasp attempt to edge Fernando Alonso for the top spot. Sebastian Vettel put the second Red Bull in third from the two McLarens and the second Ferrari of Phoenix McAllister. The Renaults were 'best of the rest' in 9th (Sammy Jones) and 10th (Robert Kubica) ahead of Rhys Davies while Nathan McKane was relatively disappointing in 17th considering his pre-season form.

1. S. Bourdais (RBR-Renault)
2. F. Alonso (Ferrari)
3. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault)
4. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
5. J. Button (McLaren-Mercedes)
6. P. McAllister (Ferrari)
7. N. Rosberg (Mercedes)
8. D. Melrose (Mercedes)
9. S. Jones (Renault)
10. R. Kubica (Renault)
11. R. Davies (Williams-Cosworth)
12. A. Sutil (Force India-Mercedes)
13. H. Kovalainen (Williams-Cosworth)
14. D. Simpson (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)
15. J. Alguersuari (STR-Ferrari)
16. S. Buemi (STR-Ferrari)
17. N. McKane (Force India-Mercedes)
18. K. Kobayashi (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)
19. T. Glock (Lotus-Cosworth)
20. M. Webber (HRT-Cosworth)
21. B. Senna (Lotus-Cosworth)
22. A. Rees (HRT-Cosworth)

Race:

You knew that once the race was inexplicably shortened to 49 laps that it was going to be an interesting day. It became even more so when it quickly became evident that Daniel Melrose guessed right when he reasoned that virtually everyone would go for the one-stopper as a result and went for the two stopper accordingly. A fantastic start followed by a classic pass on Fernando Alonso meant Melrose found himself in the lead by lap 3 but it wouldn't last as a relative lack of pace compared to the front runners thanks to abnormal front tire wear meant he couldn't take advantage of his lighter fuel load and ended up finishing a relatively lowly 6th.

With Melrose checkmated out of the equation, Sebastian Vettel assumed the lead of the race which he held until the majority of the field pitted at around lap 32-35 which eventually led the the German's demise after he spun and beached himself on a kerb when trying to overtake teammate Sebastien Bourdais, who was yet to make his stop at this point, ending his race. Bourdais and Alonso both stayed out and paid dearly for it as after running 2-3, they found themselves 3rd (Alonso) and 6th (Bourdais) respectively. During the pitstop phase, Phoenix McAllister had leapfrogged Lewis Hamilton and was now in the lead of the race holding off Hamilton with Alonso bearing down the pair of them at a vast rate of knots.

While Alonso eventually passed Hamilton, he simply ran out of time to pass his teammate McAllister which meant the Spaniard took a popular first win ahead of Alonso and Hamilton. Nico Rosberg put in a quite yet solid drive for fourth ahead of Bourdais and Melrose. Sammy Jones was the best of the rest in 7th while Jenson Button, who eventually finished 9th, was lucky to even score points as, copying Alonso and Bourdais on strategy, he fell down the order early before using the fresh rubber to pass Heikki Kovalinen before shoving Jaime Alguersuari off the track on the final lap. Button had earlier collided with Rhys Davies which effectively ruined the Australian's afternoon. Neither Hispania finished the race after Timo Glock and Mark Webber collided on lap 1 and a wheel worked itself loose on Rees' car on the second lap after he had made a fantastic start to go from 22nd to 14th.

1. P. McAllister (Ferrari): 1h 19m 02.561
2. F. Alonso (Ferrari): +0.665
3. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes): +2.774
4. N. Rosberg (Mercedes): +9.616

Round 2 - Australia:

Qualifying:

The good news for Daniel Melrose was the Bahrain version of him didn't follow him home to Australia. The bad news for everyone else was the 2009 version came to play as, for the 56th time in his already illustrious career, he put in a simply superlative lap on Saturday Afternoon to score pole by a quarter of a second from the Red Bull pair of Sebastian Vettel and Sebastien Bourdais. The order up front was strangely hierarchical with only the two Mercedes drivers separated by any considerable distance. After putting in some very competitive times in practice, Rhys Davies had to be disappointed with himself after only qualifying 10th for his first home Grand Prix since 2002 behind the Renault of Sammy Jones while further back, Mark Webber beat Bruno Senna for the second week in a row and came within a tenth of beating Glock in the battle of the new teams.

1. D. Melrose (Mercedes)
2. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault)
3. S. Bourdais (RBR-Renault)
4. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
5. J. Button (McLaren-Mercedes)
6. F. Alonso (Ferrari)
7. P. McAllister (Ferrari)
8. N. Rosberg (Mercedes)
9. S. Jones (Renault)
10. R. Davies (Williams-Cosworth)
11. R. Kubica (Renault)
12. A. Sutil (Force India-Mercedes)
13. H. Kovalainen (Williams-Cosworth)
14. D. Simpson (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)
15. K. Kobayashi (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)
16. J. Alguersuari (STR-Ferrari)
17. N. McKane (Force India-Mercedes)
18. S. Buemi (STR-Ferrari)
19. T. Glock (Lotus-Cosworth)
20. M. Webber (HRT-Cosworth)
21. B. Senna (Lotus-Cosworth)
22. A. Rees (HRT-Cosworth)

Race:

Once Daniel Melrose won the start and the McLarens took themselves (Read: Each other) out of contention, it became a five horse race between Melrose, the two Red Bulls and the Ferraris of Phoenix McAllister and Fernando Alonso. That soon became 3 as it soon became clear the two Red Bulls were clearly superior on the Ferraris and the leading Mercedes of Melrose was absolutely determined to make his two-stop strategy work. The fact that he was within 6 seconds of the winning Red Bulls by race end in a clearly inferior car is to the man's credit but everyone knows that he has always been that good.

With Melrose out of the equation, it was a straight fight between the two Red Bulls for the win which was decided when Melrose and Sebastian Vettel came up to lap some of the backmarkers in the first stint. Melrose made his way cleanly past Adrian Rees but Vettel ended up colliding with the Brit which put him behind the two Ferraris and, more importantly, his teammate Sebastien Bourdais. While he did his absolute best after the stops to catch Bourdais, he just couldn't find a way past the Frenchmen.

With the podium sorted, the Ferraris of McAllister and Fernando Alonso finished 4th and 5th while Nico Rosberg finished 6th, just ahead of Sammy Jones and Rhys Davies, who scored his first points in his comeback. Heikki Kovalainen scored two more points in addition to his 10th place in Bahrain while Adrian Sutil held off Robert Kubica to score his and Force India's first point of the new season.

Round 3 - Malaysia

Qualifying:

It just isn't a Malaysian Grand Prix weekend without a mid afternoon monsoon and this year was no different. In the changable conditions, Fernando Alonso handled them best to give Ferrari their first pole in well over a year ahead of Sebastian Bourdais and the star of qualifying Rhys Davies. Sebastian Vettel was only 7th on the grid ahead of the equally impressive Adrian Sutil but that was nothing compared to the misery over in Daniel Melrose's world as he splashed his way to 14th, behind BOTH Lotuses and just ahead of Mark Webber.

Grid:
1. F. Alonso (Ferrari)
2. S. Bourdais (RBR-Renault)
3. R. Davies (Williams-Cosworth)
4. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
5. P. McAllister (Ferrari)
6. J. Button (McLaren-Mercedes)
7. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault)
8. A. Sutil (Force India-Mercedes)
9. N. Rosberg (Mercedes)
10. H. Kovalainen (Williams-Cosworth)
11. N. McKane (Force India-Mercedes)
12. T. Glock (Lotus-Cosworth)
13. B. Senna (Lotus-Cosworth)
14. D. Melrose (Mercedes)
15. M. Webber (HRT-Cosworth)
16. S. Jones (Renault)
17. K. Kobayashi (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)
18. R. Kubica (Renault)
19. S. Buemi (STR-Ferrari)
20. A. Rees (HRT-Cosworth)
21. J. Alguersuari (STR-Ferrari)
22. D. Simpson (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)

Race:

Sebastien Bourdais may have won again, confirming that he indeed better than anyone said he was, but nobody cared as in the final few laps, the World finally got a taste of the battle everyone wanted to see. That battle being between two of the greatest World Champions in the history of Formula One, the battle for 6th and 7th near the end between Australians Daniel Melrose and Rhys Davies, two of the most aggressive drivers on the grid. Before that point, Davies was catching Melrose at well over a second a lap and finally got him with just over two laps to go. However, with every challenge Davies made on Melrose, the defending champ responded with hard but fair defense in the short but entertaining battle.

Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel completed the podium ahead of Phoenix McAllister and Jenson Button while Button's teammate Lewis Hamilton was too busy being a grade A clown by colliding with Melrose, Nico Rosberg and Robert Kubica at various points in the race. With Mercedes struggling, Jones out early and Hamilton in trouble, the man who SHOULD have been 6th behind Button Adrian Sutil before his Mercedes engine blew up while Sauber were on for a double points finish before both Kamui Kobayashi's and Dave Simpson's races ended in the pit entry wall. The pit entry also claimed Nathan McKane and Sebastian Buemi as attrition decimated the midfield. The attrition allowed the two Lotuses to finish 12th (Glock) and 14th (Senna) with the sole finishing Hispania of Mark Webber doing an excellent job to split the pair.

1. S. Bourdais (RBR-Renault): 1h 31m 50.774
2. F. Alonso (Ferrari): +5.294
3. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault): +12.645

But despite the exodus of stars, Williams have managed to retain Rhys Davies after his successful return in 2010. Whether he and teammate Rubens Barrichello have the car to fight for wins this year is unclear, but one thing is certain - it will be an entertaining year.

That's right, I'm doing an F1 2011 season for Davies. Well, actually, I've already done an F1 2011 season for Davies, quite a while ago, so now I'm just posting the results because some of them were quite brilliant.

Australian GP - Melbourne
Qualifying (I never wrote down the exact quali results, so all I know is who got pole, my effort, and any other really weird/awesome results):
1st: F. Alonso
---
3rd: J. Alguersuari (example one of somewhat unrealistic results)
---
8th: R. Davies

Race:
1st: F. Alonso (FL)
2nd: M. Webber
3rd: J. Button
4th: J. Alguersuari
5th: F. Massa
6th: S. Perez
7th: R. Davies
8th: P. di Resta
9th: V. Petrov
10th: N. Heidfeld
---
14th: R. Barrichello
---
19th: N. Karthikeyan (why not throw in the back 6?)
20th: J. D'Ambrosio
21st: T. Glock
22nd: V. Liuzzi
23rd: J. Trulli
24th: H. Kovalainen

Alonso makes the perfect start to the year, while Webber just missed out on the top step at home. Davies made a good start, but lost out in the pit stops. Still, gaining on his qualifying position was a plus. Alguersuari holds fourth, and Perez impresses on debut as well. Only Ferrari and Renault had two cars in the points.

Standings:
1st: F. Alonso - 25
2nd: M. Webber - 18
3rd: J. Button - 15
4th: J. Alguersuari - 12
5th: F. Massa - 10
6th: S. Perez - 8
7th: R. Davies - 6
8th: P. di Resta - 4
9th: V. Petrov - 2
10th: N. Heidfeld - 1
(Please note the absence of Hamilton and Vettel from the top 10 - useless!)

1st: Ferrari - 35
2nd: Red Bull - 18
3rd: McLaren - 15
4th: Toro Rosso - 12
5th: Sauber - 8
6th: Williams - 6
7th: Force India - 4
8th: Renault - 3

I thought I explained in the F1RWRS thread that it'd be in Mr McAllister's best interests to stay at Ferrari beyond 2010.

I'm gonna let you guys do all the off-track shenanigans and rumours, mostly to save me the time it takes for me to think up all that crap.

Anyways:

Round 4 - China

Qualifying:

Daniel Melrose was already an unhappy camper in the Mercedes garage after his lackluster start to the year. Being 4 seconds off the pace in the dry at the one track he hates the most after Friday meant that by the end of the day he was ready to explode. With qualifying bibically wet however, he managed to haul his crapbox of a car to third on the grid, behind polesitter Sebastian Vettel and a simply scintillating Sammy Jones, who came within a hundredth of a second of stealing pole position. Championship leader Sebastian Bourdais put in an absolutely shocking drive for 13th on the grid while Mark Webber was the best of the new teams in 17th, ahead of the likes of Sebastian Buemi and Nathan McKane.

Grid:
1. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault)
2. S. Jones (Renault)
3. D. Melrose (Mercedes)
4. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
5. P. McAllister (Ferrari)
6. J. Button (McLaren-Mercedes)
7. F. Alonso (Ferrari)
8. R. Davies (Williams-Cosworth)
9. N. Rosberg (Mercedes)
10. R. Kubica (Renault)
11. H. Kovalainen (Williams-Cosworth)
12. A. Sutil (Force India-Mercedes)
13. S. Bourdais (RBR-Renault)
14. D. Simpson (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)
15. K. Kobayashi (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)
16. J. Alguersuari (STR-Ferrari)
17. M. Webber (HRT-Cosworth)
18. T. Glock (Lotus-Cosworth)
19. S. Buemi (STR-Ferrari)
20. N. McKane (Force India-Mercedes)
21. B. Senna (Lotus-Cosworth)
22. A. Rees (HRT-Cosworth)

Race:

Give Sammy Jones even a whiff of a possible victory and he will tear away at you until he either wins or is eventually beaten. Here it was the former as in the changeable conditions, not once did he find himself on the wrong tyres. He followed the example of Daniel Melrose, Jenson Button and Rhys Davies to switch from monsoons to the softer of the two wet tyres at around laps 45-47. The fact that Jones bolted at 5 seconds a lap after passing Sebastian Vettel for the win said it all as he took the 7th win of his career and the first win for Renault since 2006. Vettel was left to commiserate second place while Button snuck home in third after blasting past teammate Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in the dying stages. After starting third, Melrose made three pitstops that afternoon to an eventual 7th place finish while Sebastian Bourdais held the championship lead by the skin of his teeth with 8th place. Adrian Sutil was another to switch to wets later on and got two vital points as a reward.

1. S. Jones (Renault): 1h 56m 52.294
2. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault): +35.322

Round 5 - Spain

Qualifying:

With the start of the European season, it became clear that everyone was in for one of the greatest championship battles in history. The gap between the top 10 drivers in qualifying was less than 8 tenths and the difference between the two Red Bull drivers was less than a hundredth of a second. It was Sebastian Vettel who emerged on pole in the battle of the Sebastians while Fernando Alonso put his Ferrari on the second row in front of his home ground. Fellow Spaniard Phoenix McAllister was 5th in the sister Ferrari for his first Spanish GP for the Tifosi, splitting the McLaren pair while the two Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Daniel Melrose occupied row 4. Surprise Chinese GP winner Sammy Jones was the best of the midfield in 9th ahead of Rhys Davies in the Williams.

Grid:
1. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault)
2. S. Bourdais (RBR-Renault)
3. F. Alonso (Ferrari)
4. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
5. P. McAllister (Ferrari)
6. J. Button (McLaren-Mercedes)
7. N. Rosberg (Mercedes)
8. D. Melrose (Mercedes)
9. S. Jones (Renault)
10. R. Davies (Williams-Cosworth)
11. H. Kovalainen (Williams-Cosworth)
12. R. Kubica (Renault)
13. D. Simpson (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)
14. A. Sutil (Force India-Mercedes)
15. K. Kobayashi (BMW Sauber-Ferrari)
16. S. Buemi (STR-Ferrari)
17. N. McKane (Force India-Mercedes)
18. J. Alguersuari (STR-Ferrari)
19. T. Glock (Lotus-Cosworth)
20. M. Webber (HRT-Cosworth)
21. B. Senna (Lotus-Cosworth)
22. A. Rees (HRT-Cosworth)

Race:

Once it turned out very early on that Daniel Melrose didn't quite have the pace to hang onto Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso after the Australian's incredible start, it became a two horse race. Once Sebastian Bourdais retired with a suspension failure, that battle for the win turned into a battle for the championship lead. Sebastian Vettel ultimately won the battle with fresher tyres than Alonso in the end as the Spaniard nearly fell victim to the determined Lewis Hamilton and his teammate Phoenix McAllister as the trio finished less than two seconds apart. Melrose spent most of the day going up and down the field like a yo-yo with his unconventional two stop strategy but the defending champ took home a hatful of points in 5th along with the fastest lap ahead of Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg. Sammy Jones was slightly disappointed in himself with 8th place while Adrian Sutil and Dave Simpson rounded out the points paying positions.

1. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault): 1h 34m 14.113
2. F. Alonso (Ferrari): +12.297
3. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes): +13.565
4. P. McAllister (Ferrari): +14.111
5. D. Melrose (Mercedes): +22.025
6. J. Button (McLaren-Mercedes): +25.764
7. N. Rosberg (Mercedes): +33.146
8. S. Jones (Renault): +36.499
9. A. Sutil (Force India-Mercedes): +1:07.020

Round 6 - Monaco

Qualifying:

Sammy Jones has always been incredibly good around Monaco. It's just that he's spent most of his career racing the likes of Rhys Davies and Daniel Melrose who have spent their careers making Monaco their personal playground. With Melrose struggling by his lofty Monaco standards with his hateful Mercedes and Davies falling victim to the closeness of the field (Pole to 12th was covered by six tenths of a second and 3rd-11th by three tenths) and a Renault car which almost seemed tailor made for the circuit, the Englishman shone to finally score his first pole at the Principality after over a decade of trying. Joint-Championship leader Sebastian Vettel joined him on the front row ahead of the increasingly frustrated Melrose and Lewis Hamilton. Phoenix McAllister was another victim of the near parity in 10th, behind another surprise package in Dave Simpson while Timo Glock came within a few tenths of upsetting the applecart at the tail of the midfield.

Grid:
1. S. Jones (Renault)
2. S. Vettel (RBR-Renault)
3. D. Melrose (Mercedes)
4. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)

Race:

By Monaco standards, normal service was resumed by lap one when Daniel Melrose got a great start, blasted down the inside of polesitter Sammy Jones and skipped away at half a second a lap, which was as far as the race for the win was concerned. Behind him, Jones had to settle for a lapped second place while championship leader Sebastian Vettel held off Lewis Hamilton by the skin of his teeth for the last spot on the dias. With both Ferraris and his teammate Sebastian Bourdais all finding the Monte Carlo armco at various points in the race, Vettel had to score all the points he could get. With many of the big-name runners up front gone, it was a field day for the midfielders with Rhys Davies coming in an uncharacteristically quiet 6th and a disastrous two laps down on his fellow Australian. Davies got that spot from another Australian in Dave Simpson with a few laps to go when the Sauber driver's tyres cried no more. Force India scored a double points finish with Adrian Sutil 8th and Nathan McKane 10th (Although the Canadian inherited that point when Sebastian Buemi spun late in the race) while Kamui Kobayashi scored his first career points in the sister BMW Sauber in 9th.
