2006

Giancarlo Fisichella 124 (5 wins, 5 2nds, 4 3rds)
Felipe Massa 120 (7 wins, 4 2nds, 1 3rd)
Rubens Barrichello 67 (1 2nd, 6 3rds)
Nick Heidfeld 57 (2 2nds)
Ralf Schumacher 48 (1 win, 1 2nd)
Jarno Trulli 45 (4 3rds)
Juan Pablo Montoya 44 (3 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Pedro de la Rosa 37 (1 win, 2 2nds)
David Coulthard 37 (1 2nd)
Mark Webber 27 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Nico Rosberg 24 (1 3rd)
Robert Kubica 17 (1 win)
Christian Klien 16 (2 4ths)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 13 (2 6ths, 3 7ths, 1 8th)
Scott Speed 13 (2 6ths, 3 7ths, 1 8th)
Takuma Sato 4 (1 6th)
Christijan Albers 4 (1 7th)
Tiago Monteiro 3 (1 7th)
Robert Doornbos 1 (1 8th)

A close contest between Massa and Fisichella. Felipe was faster in the second half of the season and finished ahead of Giancarlo in seven of the last nine races, but the Italian kept getting second and third places. Two bad races for Felipe at Monza and Shanghai distroyed all of his hard work.

Heroic performance by Sato, who finishes ahead of both Midland drivers after a magnificent 6th at Brazil.

That's... shocking.
2007, Massa will win that. 2008, again.

2007

Felipe Massa 127 (10 wins, 2 2nds, 1 3rd)
Nick Heidfeld 106 (5 wins, 3 2nds, 3 3rds)
Robert Kubica 74 (1 win, 4 2nds, 3 3rds)
Heikki Kovalainen 67 (1 win, 1 2nd, 2 3rds)
Giancarlo Fisichella 54 (2 2nds, 2 3rds)
Nico Rosberg 50 (1 2nd, 2 3rds)
Mark Webber 34 (1 2nd)
David Coulthard 32 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jarno Trulli 28 (1 3rd)
Alexander Wurz 27 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Ralf Schumacher 20 (1 3rd)
Rubens Barrichello 14 (2 6ths)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 10 (2nd)
Takuma Sato 8 (1 4th)
Scott Speed 4 (1 6th)
Adrian Sutil 3 (1 6th)
Anthony Davidson 3 (1 7th)
Kazuki Nakajima 2 (1 7th)

Massa's title to lose since the start. But Heidfeld kept collecting points most of the time: in fact, he won the first two races of the season, as well as Montreal (where Massa retired). Another couple of retirements for Massa at Hungary and Monza were two wins for Heidfeld, and all of a sudden the championship looked close: Massa still led, but only just (92-87). But Felipe kept his cool in the final races, with three wins and a 4th place at Fuji (where Heidfeld retired). Third championship title for the new emerging power in F1: Brazil!

Not much changed in the original version of this (with Vettel), as he had to be removed from just two races: Indy (Fisi, Wurz, Rosberg and Speed scored one more point) and Shanghai (Liuzzi went from 3rd to 2nd, Heidfeld to the podium, and Coulthard, Kovalainen, Webber, Fisichella and Wurz scored one more point each). But it should be different in 2008...

Ha, Liuzzi would have won China 2007 in this format if Glock had gone a bit faster on the last lap in Brazil '08! :D

2008

Felipe Massa 110 (8 wins, 2 2nds)
Robert Kubica 109 (4 wins, 5 2nds, 2 3rds)
Nick Heidfeld 92 (2 wins, 3 2nds, 5 3rds)
Heikki Kovalainen 78 (2 wins, 1 2nd, 5 3rds)
Jarno Trulli 57 (1 2nd, 2 3rds)
Mark Webber 49 (2 3rds)
Timo Glock 48 (3 2nds)
Nelson Piquet Jr. 36 (1 win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Nico Rosberg 34 (1 win, 1 2nd)
David Coulthard 24 (1 3rd)
Kazuki Nakajima 24 (2 4ths)
Rubens Barrichello 17 (1 2nd)
Sébastien Bourdais 15 (1 4th)
Giancarlo Fisichella 3 (1 7th)

Heidfeld led after the first races, but Kubica passed him at Barcelona. The Pole held a meagre lead for most of the season, his consistency keeping him ahead of the more erratic Massa, while teammate Heidfeld lied a few points behind. With two races to go, Kubica managed to open a 11-point gap over Massa.

Why BMW didn't issue team orders at China was beyond everyone, Massa winning in front of Heidfeld and Kubica and reducing the gap to 7 points, instead of 9 had the Pole finished second.

At the final race, Massa won again and Kubica had a nightmare, finishing 7th, right behind Heidfeld in 6th. In the end, had he finished in front in those two races, he would have won the championship!

This is the ridiculous result I was refering to earlier! In the original version, including Vettel, Massa won by 4 points and it wasn't so blatant (Kubica would have lost even with BMW team orders).

Are you sure that result in Brazil is correct? I have it down as Kubica finished 11th in reality, which becomes 7th after you take out Alonso, Raikkonen, Vettel and Hamilton?

(He'd still lose on countback though.....)

Yes, it was 7th. I had it correct in the standings, but forget changing it in the text (it was written before the season ended).

2009

Rubens Barrichello 113.5 (5 wins, 5 2nds)
Mark Webber 95 (7 wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Nico Rosberg 67.5 (2 2nds, 3 3rds)
Jarno Trulli 53 (2 wins, 2 2nds, 1 3rd*)
Timo Glock 53 (1 win, 1 2nd*, 2 3rds)
Heikki Kovalainen 47 (1 2nd, 4 3rds)
Nick Heidfeld 44 (1 win*, 3 3rds)
Robert Kubica 38 (2 2nds)
Felipe Massa 34 (2 2nds, 2 3rds)
Giancarlo Fisichella 24 (1 win)
Sébastien Buemi 18 (1 3rd)
Adrian Sutil 14 (1 2nd)
Kazuki Nakajima 12 (1 5th)
Sébastien Bourdais 11,5 (1 5th)
Kamui Kobayashi 9 (1 4th)
Nelson Piquet Jr. 5 (1 5th)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 2 (1 7th)

*half-points given (Malaysian GP)

The original version of this was better: Barrichello defeated Vettel by 1.5 points (99.5-98). On this one, Barrichello took the early lead, although he wasn't as dominant as Button. Webber took four wins in a row and overtook him in mid-season, but he lost ground since Valencia, and Rubens clinched his third title at Suzuka. Four titles for Brazil in the last eight seasons!

9 points in two races for Kobayashi is pretty darn impressive.

Nothing for Alguersuari in 2009?

Did Fisichella get any of his points for Ferrari?

And, finally:

2010

Mark Webber 355 (11 wins, 1 2nd, 2 3rds)
Nico Rosberg 253 (2 wins, 8 2nds, 1 3rd)
Robert Kubica 247 (1 win, 6 2nds, 4 3rds)
Felipe Massa 243 (4 wins, 3 2nds, 2 3rds)
Rubens Barrichello 146 (1 win, 2 3rds)
Adrian Sutil 122 (2 3rds)
Kamui Kobayashi 99 (1 2nd)
Jaime Alguersuari 79 (1 5th)
Vitaly Petrov 78 (3 3rds)
Vitantonio Liuzzi 76 (1 3rd, 2 4ths, 1 5th)
Nico Hulkenberg 76 (1 3rd, 2 4ths, 1 6th)
Sébastien Buemi 62 (1 4th)
Nick Heidfeld 29 (1 3rd)
Pedro de la Rosa 29 (1 5th)
Heikki Kovalainen 14 (1 7th)
Jarno Trulli 4 (1 8th)
Timo Glock 2 (1 9th)
Karun Chandhok 2 (2 10ths)
Bruno Senna 2 (2 10ths)
Lucas di Grassi 1 (1 10th)

There wasn't a doubt about this one, was it?

Interesting things:
-Rosberg and Kubica beat Massa
-Barrichello wins a race (Valencia)
-Kobayashi scores a podium at Suzuka
-Alguersuari scores lots of points! He kept improving all the season and (to me) he was the better driver of the Toro Rosso pair, but kept finishing 11th too many times; these efforts are shown here
-The new teams' efforts are properly rewarded, and... Virgin scored less points than Hispania!

Nothing, as most of his races were retirements. Was set for some points at Suzuka until he crashed.

Fisichella scored 7 points for Ferrari: 5th at Monza, 8th at Singapore and 7th at Suzuka.

I love the way Heidfeld gets exactly the same amount of points as De La Rosa, just like in reality!

That was really interesting to follow all the way through, nice one!

And if you think Kobayashi getting a podium at Suzuka this year is impressive, wait until you see the result of the 2002 race in the "Backwards Elimination" championship I'm currently doing, I have worked it out but won't be able to post the results up until tonight (hint, hint)! :D

2011 (after 1 race)

Vitaly Petrov 25 (1 win)
Mark Webber 18 (1 2nd)
Felipe Massa 15 (1 3rd)
Sébastien Buemi 12 (1 4th)
Adrian Sutil 10 (1 5th)
Paul di Resta 8 (1 6th)
Jaime Alguersuari 6 (1 7th)
Nick Heidfeld 4 (1 8th)
Jarno Trulli 2 (1 9th)
Jérôme D'Ambrosio 1 (1 10th)

This could be a good one because there are five champions in the field and they have good cars, but let's see. In principle it should be Webber vs. Massa, but whoever wins it could lose it in the future if they win it in real life

Go Vitaly!!!!

Incidentally, I've just been watcjing on BBC i-player a programme celebrating the 60th anniversary of the sport, which showed the Bahrain champions' parade. I'm trying to imagine the one there would have been in this parallel world! Presuming everyone still alive would have been there (which didn't happen in the real champions one), the parade would have consisted of:

Gonzalez
Moss
Brooks
Gurney
Amon
Ickx
Reutemann
Watson
Arnoux
Johansson
Berger
Patrese
Coulthard
Alesi
Frentzen
Irvine
Barrichello
Montoya (I checked there was no NASCAR race that week!!)
Ralf Schumacher
Fisichella
Massa
(Webber had yet to win it)

Doesn't quite have the same ring to it as the real one, but scarily only Barrichello and Massa would have been competing in the main race, and only Ickx and Reutemann were the only 70s champions still alive!!!

Speaking of Montoya, how far off the championship lead was he when he quit in 2006? With 3 wins on the board he might still have been in contention.

I agree actually, a 15th place (or better) with Vettel, Hamilton, Button, Alonso and Schumacher to be eliminated is not beyond the realms of possibility!

(Or they look like just missing out, then a new champion like Webber comes along to be eliminated and promotes them into the points! :) )

Re: The No Real Champions Alternative Championship

Post by Ferrim »

2011 (after 5 races)

Mark Webber 111 (3 wins, 2 2nds)
Nick Heidfeld 65 (1 win, 2 3rds, 1 7th, 1 8th)
Nico Rosberg 60 (3 2nds, 1 7th)
Vitaly Petrov 57 (1 win, 2 4ths, 1 6th)
Felipe Massa 51 (3 3rds, 1 7th)
Kamui Kobayashi 40 (1 4th, 2 5ths, 1 6th)
Paul di Resta 32 (1 5th, 2 6ths, 1 7th)
Sébastien Buemi 30 (1 4th, 1 5th, 1 8th, 2 9ths)
Adrian Sutil 27 (1 5th, 1 6th, 2 8ths, 1 10th)
Sergio Pérez 12 (1 4th, 1 9th)
Jaime Alguersuari 8 (1 7th, 1 9th)
Rubens Barrichello 5 (1 8th, 1 10th)
Jarno Trulli 2 (1 9th)
Jérôme D'Ambrosio 1 (1 10th)
Heikki Kovalainen 1 (1 10th)
Pastor Maldonado 1 (1 10th)

Webber is clearly going to run away with this. I've decided it could be a good idea to run a Constructors Championship as well:

Renault 122
Red Bull 111
Mercedes 60
Force India 59
Sauber 54
Ferrari 51
Toro Rosso 38
Williams 6
Lotus 3
Virgin 1
Go home, Bernie Ecclestone!

That constructors championship is a great idea - it'll be interesting to see if Webber on his own can beat both Heidfeld and Petrov. Poor McLaren! :)

I'm quite surprised Rosberg and both Renaults are beating Massa.

(Indeed for this championship I figured the last time McLaren would have had two drivers for a full season was.......1981)

(Watson only in 1982-3, nobody in 1984-6 except for Watson's one-off Brands appearance, Johansson only in 1987, nobody in 1988-9, Berger on his own in 1990-2, Andretti for a part season in 1993, Brundle on his own for 1994 apart from a one-off appearance for Alliot, similar with Blundell/Magnussen in 1995, Coulthard on his own from 1996-2004, Montoya plus replacements in 2005/6, Kovalainen only in 2008/9, and nobody in 2007, 2010 and 2011)!!!

Actually I've just worked out from all the earlier posts who all the constructors champions are from 1981 to date (since before that they had some silly rule where only the top car scored points) - Ligier, BMW-Sauber and TOYOTA for crying out loud each win two championships!!! (Actually that's the same total as McLaren and Benetton have won in the same period)

Most of the rest were Ferrari or Williams.

2011 (after 6 races)

Mark Webber 136 (4 wins, 2 2nds)
Nick Heidfeld 77 (1 win, 2 3rds, 1 4th, 1 7th, 1 8th)
Nico Rosberg 66 (3 2nds, 2 7ths)
Kamui Kobayashi 58 (1 2nd, 1 4th, 2 5ths, 1 6th)
Vitaly Petrov 57 (1 win, 2 4ths, 1 6th)
Felipe Massa 51 (3 3rds, 1 7th)
Adrian Sutil 42 (1 3rd, 1 5th, 1 6th, 2 8ths, 1 10th)
Sébastien Buemi 38 (1 4th, 1 5th, 1 6th, 1 8th, 2 9ths)
Paul di Resta 36 (1 5th, 2 6ths, 1 7th, 1 8th)
Rubens Barrichello 15 (1 5th, 1 8th, 1 10th)
Sergio Pérez 12 (1 4th, 1 9th)
Jaime Alguersuari 8 (1 7th, 1 9th)
Jarno Trulli 4 (2 9ths)
Heikki Kovalainen 2 (2 10ths)
Jérôme D'Ambrosio 1 (1 10th)
Pastor Maldonado 1 (1 10th)

A pass for the lead, with two laps to go, at Monaco: an epic race end! What a pity that it allowed Mark Webber to further increase his championship lead.

Red Bull 136
Renault 134
Mercedes 66
Force India 78
Sauber 72
Ferrari 51
Toro Rosso 46
Williams 16
Lotus 6
Virgin 1

So Webber's just robbed Kobayashi of his first win in this? *Facepalm*!!

What a race we had at Canada! Massa and Webber started from the first row, but the race went completely mad since the beginning and after a few laps Kamui Kobayashi was in the lead! The Japanese driver retained first place for most of the race, under heavy pressure from Massa, but as the track dried Mark Webber made a bold move, took the dry tyres earlier than anyone else and it paid off. Fifth straight win for the Australian, but you can't really say that he isn't having to fight for them! And the fight behind him is terrific (it actually makes me wish that he could be eliminated). And HRT scores a point!!

What I find really spooky is that Webber's scores in this championship are exactly the same as his teammates in real life (albeit in a different order)!

Wonder if Webber can break the record for most number of wins in a season for this championship? (Without looking, is the record 10 by Alesi in 1996)?
