F1 Rejects Competition?

Post by SuperAguri »

One thing I missed from the podcast last year was the annual F1 Rejects podcast competition, although I never won, I was happy that I got on the close by no cigar page several times. I would love to see a competition happen for 2009 even if there was nothing to win, mainly as most F1 rejects would say "It's the taking part, not the winning that counts" (or Pre-qualifying or Qualifying in most cases....).

From thinking up a funny caption for Williams, to writing delightful poetry for Taku and finding out what H.O.N.D.A. really means, the competitions were funny and made waiting for a new season that less painful. So I hope we might get a mid season F1 Rejects competition, even if we get nothing apart from our names read out on air (so to speak...).

One thing missing from the main page is a history of the results of previous competitions, which I hope will be corrected. They are all still there, as you get them from

Yes - that's something we missed this year in taking an everything-but-podcasts post-European GP hiatus due to the birth of Enoch's daughter amongst other things.

But now we're back in the swing of things somewhat, we're open to suggestions. Acronyms, captions, haikus... what's left!?

Cheers,
Jamie.

How about Webberisms

greatest number of laps completed in last place
number of drivers who have back flipped a car of any description
list of drivers who have made really bad choiuces by not listening to their manager
number of drivers that own restaurants
number of drivers who have been designated unlucky throughout there career
number of drivers who have smashed into a 4WD and lived to drive a F1 car

Or DC isms
name the drivers who have not been hit by DC
how many times has DC grown a beard
name the supermodels dated by DC
---------------------------------------------------
going bacwards up the escape road at Amaroo park hillclimb in a Brabham Holbay is enough to convince you that you are a F1 (or F3) reject

I did email at the start of the season bright and early saying that maybe a limerick would be in the theme with the previous competitions. :D

For example....

There was a driver called Ralf
Who had quite a large mouth
He would always loudly say
"I have a drive on the way"
But he is heading to NASCAR in the deep south

Or something like that... :D Although finding ryhmes to say Nelson Piqeut Jr might be more tricky. :D

There once was Piquet Jr, so they say
Nelson, hired to pave Alonso's way
His arrogance in Renault's halls
And crashes into concrete walls
Sent him also down to the deep south.

There was once a young driver named Piquet
Whose attraction to barriers caused dismay
With each Renault he busted
His boss Flavio was more flustered
So young Junior made way for Bourdais

Nelson Piquet was the one,
Who made F1 in the 80s such fun,
It's quite different today,
I'm quite sad to say,
But I still get a good laugh from his son.

Is there anything wrong with re-visiting any of those? I think a better idea would be to draw a better layout for the Valencia street circuit.

In comes Bourdais, to the 14 car
Behind his teammate, he was not far
In America, he was called Seabass
But in F1, he was third class
He could have gone over to NASCAR.

(little known fact: he was offered a NASCAR drive and almost took it!)

There twice was a driver named Nelson
including a not-so-prodigal son
Always driving the Renault
Oh-so-painfully slow
He must think Q2's no fun

There was this driver called Piquet,
Decided to do F1 his own way,
Alas, all this meant
Cars were mangled and bent,
He'll up in IndyCar like Enrique.

Pretty poor effort but anyway

Renault's second driver, Mr. Piquet,
Only in Q2 on a good day,
He's about to lose
His F1 driving shoes,
...was this limerick better than Ide's?

I hear of a driver called Piquet
Only makes it to Q2 on a rainy day.
Race day and we already knew
What he would do
And off the track he flew.

My rather ptiiful attempt at a Piquet rhyme

Great to see an F1 Rejects forum up.

Can I add my attempt for Piquet (with a nod to Ide):

There is a young driver called Piquet
Who was signed by the great Briatore
But too many retirements
And a lack of requirements
Means he's going the way of the Ide

Requirements? I thought his only requirements were to make Alonso look good and to create SC periods that would play into Renault's advantage

Here is my idea:

I'm thinking something along the lines of Jamie and Enoch coming up with a category of a top ten (or five) list based on the Grand Prix weekend and then having the forum members submitting their list.

The most amusing entries (i.e. - ones that would be submitted by yours trulli) could be read out on the next podcast.
A category for example could be:

Top ten things witnessed at the Malaysian Grand Prix:

10) Bernie Ecclestone confused about how he would present a "half-medal."
9) Heidfeld celebrating his fully deserved 2nd place...next to his beached car.
8)Hamilton lying about something
7) Whitmarsh finding somebody to blame for what Hamilton was lying about (see #8)
6)...
5)...

Then the malaysian grand prix top ten would be read out during the Chinese GP podcast. and so on and so on. I personally think it would be a nice addition to the podcast and give the loyal reject fans something fun to take part in. Thoughts?

I think race-wise it may be difficult. But season-wise it could be funny. "Top 10 Reject moments", perhaps you could put a list of options during the final race podcast and then reveal results in season review.

What they did do, in the 2001 season review I think, was the top 10 things we didn't see in the season.

It was an amusing list alright, and indeed I would have loved to see fisticuffs between JPM and RSchu, or a duel for Jaguar between Rahal and Lauda in the R2.
DEPORTIVO CA... pfft hahaha can't say that with a straight face!
Misses Minardi dearly. :(

You're right - race by race might be a bit taxing - Season wise would be fine by me - I think it could be hilarious.

How about football chants for stories...

http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/74372

Cheap shot coming, but here goes "Are You Piquet in Disguise?"
"will you stop him playing tennis then?", referring to Montoya's famous shoulder injury, to which Whitmarsh replied "well, it's very difficult to play tennis on a motorbike"
