2016 F1RDS Grand Prix of Japan - Fuji Speedway

Qualifying

Image

Race

POSITIVES:

+++ Nurminen Racing Engineering - Vosu did what she had to do, collecting all 20 points to produce a 17-point lead over Aimée Gauthier going into the final race.Butler only qualified 9th, but with his teammate's championship aspirations the talking point of the paddock the Brit needed to act fast if he was going to become any kind of tail-gunner. He made a fantastic start to get ahead of numerous cars, including Gauthier. He saw off her challenge calmly and expertly, until she dropped back behind a rapid Chuck Barrett. Vosu's got one hand on the trophy.

++ Chuck Barrett - Barrett's not had a vintage season at Octan by any stretch save for a couple of good podiums early on, but the American raced hard to claim a valuable 10 points for himself and his team. Putting a stunning move around the outside of Gauthier at the 100R thrilled the spectators too.

+ Iakopo Fuamatu - On the face of it, the Samoan will be aggrieved to have lost a podium, but it wasn't for the want of trying. Having been nudged off early by an errant Simon Mestach, Fuamatu put in a great recovery drive to grab a strong 6th place.

NEGATIVES

- Jari Lappalainen - Scored points, yes, but just didn't have the pace to hold onto the fine 5th place that the Finn claimed in qualifying.

-- Behrman Reith - Another apathetic showing from the young German. Not a brilliant way to captivate suitors for next season.

--- Simon Mestach - The Belgian made an absolute meal of his race. Shoving off Fuamatu early on, Mestach soon got his comeuppance when he braked too late at Dunlop corner and veered off into the gravel. Missed an almost-certain podium with his antics.

2016 F1RDS Grand Prix of Japan - Fuji - Round 2

Qualifying

Image

Race

POSITIVES

+++ Daniela Anger - The Swiss rookie's not had it all her own way this season; having missed the Winter Cup, Anger was always going to start the year on the back foot. Throughout 2016, she's been slowly building up points and an excellent win at the last race of the season showed her true capabilities as a driver.

++ Aimée Gauthier - Fair play to Gauthier, she didn't give up in this race. Unfortunately for her, Anger was just on another level, and must be content with 2nd in the championship.

+ J.C. Wolf - The Austrian claimed his first pole and first points to end the season on a high. The kid's got what it takes to do well in RDS, it just remains to be seen whether he'll stick around.

NEGATIVES

- Anu Vosu - She won the title by the skin of her teeth. A great year, but not a great performance on which to end.

-- Stan Frankham - The Brit seems destined for bigger things next year, but having been mathematically ruled out of the championship in the previous Fuji race meant that he'd effectively given up on this one.

--- Miguel Silva - Threw away certain points with a lacklustre performance. If the Spaniard can work on his consistency, he'll be a good asset for an F3RWRS team next year, but his 2016 has been fraught with many errors.

Aimée Gauthier wrote:We lost the championship at race 1. Finishing 5th while Vosu scored maximum points was simply not good enough. Nevertheless, I am very pleased with the way this year has gone. The fact that I was only denied the title by a driver in her second year, who is a few years older than me, and who was less consistent than me is not something to be displeased with.

Anu Võsu wrote:YES! It was a close call, but I guess it's better for the spectators to have a tense fight for the title right to the finish. After my less-than-good first season I was afraid my career was already over, but luckily Nurminen believed in me and gave me another chance. Everything seemed to click with the team right from the beginning of the season, although car issues prevented me from reaching all of the points I should've scored. But hey, a title's a title and I'll take it - this gives me a great boost to take up the challenge in F3RWRS next season!

Niko Nurminen wrote:A great effort by both our drivers, I must say. It was already evident in the Winter Cup that this season could lead to great things for us, and despite some occasional troubles it culminated in us getting both of the titles! Anu Võsu was absolutely phenomenal at some points of this season, while Butler did a great job in helping us achieve the teams' title despite having to jump in the car mid-season. Although we'll be together for one last time at the Macau F3 Masters, I'm already wishing them the best of luck for next season.

Daniela Anger wrote:I WON! I WON I WON I WON! THIS IS AMAZING! And I scored the fastest lap too? Brilliant! This whole season has been a learning experience for me, and while at times it has been tough I know it's all worth it in the long run, and has already paid off. Watch out everyone, because next year Danger is on the track!

As for me, the race was a bit disappointing, having fallen behind Grey fairly early on. I had the pace to overtake, but just couldn't find a way past. Still, a sixth place is nothing to scoff at, and our result will really help boost morale for next season. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Knight and the whole of the Plus One outfit for giving me this opportunity, and I look forward to bringing home some podiums and possibly wins next year.

Evaluation of the drivers:
De Bock Performed good, and has beaten both teammates.
Conclusion: we signed the right guy.
Kanäanpapadopoulos or something like that: Inconsistent, easily outperformed Lopez, but didn't get close to De Bock.
Conclusion: we don't know yet, but considering we need an F3RWRS driver anyway, his experience and results in touring cars justify such a move.
Donnelly: Easily outperformed Lopez and wasn't too far of De Bock, also performed good in his tests with other teams.
Conclusion: Has made the best impression, and we are officially interested.
Lopez: Very unimpressive, and didn't perform much better with other teams either.
Conclusion: Has made no impression, and we are officially no longer interested.

When F1RWRS finishes this weekend, I'll stick up a new thread detailing all of the changes the series will go under. Keep your eyes peeled for that.

I'll also release the new car livery template (we're using the GP3 mod on rFactor, in case you weren't aware) with a guide to sponsor application since there are some parts of the car that are flipped. Of course, if you a) don't have the tools or b) can't be arsed to do your livery, I'll put up a livery request form. Since I'll need one livery per driver, any personal sponsorship that a driver brings would add a touch of authenticity.

Hopefully you've enjoyed this season, and by all means get your prep for 2017 underway. We've got a way to go until we start up again, and hopefully the calendar will be with you soon.

We'll sign him up anyway, but i can not say yet if it will be F1RDS or F3RWRS. Or even IFRC if you don't mind me rushing him up the ranks, i'm giving him a test in IFRC to see if he can handle this machinery.

A lot will depend on Nicchi and Barett. Their owners need to tell me if they prefer going to F3RWRS, or might take the gamble to go straight to IFRC.
I'm not very keen on the idea of keeping them in F1RDS, because else i will run short of drivers.

Octan might re-consider her, considering she's female and thus commercially interesting. We do have experience with slow drivers (Da Cunha and Nicchi) and we are partnered to RonDen Racing Engineering, and former RonDen drivers usually turned out very competitive afterwards. And we still have one spot left anyway.

We're both officially interested, so it's her choice.
You people know that signing up with Octan YD will garantue that your driver will make it up to IFRC at least, and if he/she is good, there's also a big chance of ending up in F2RWRS.
At the moment i am rushing my drivers a little fast, but this is only temporary as i'm currently in shortage of drivers.
