We've already beaten last years points tally, and it's only round 2! I'd say this is going well, but still, we'll spend both our D&T opportunities on mechanical grip.

Round 3 - San Marino Grand Prix, Imola, 5th May 1985

Qualifying Results:
After two previous starting grids of utter Italian domination, not just David - but David and his best mate Joshua - showed-up, to suppress the Goliath of speed that is Didier Pironi. Highly-rated German driver, Steffan Bellof, took his first pole position in a very fast BMW-powered Williams, and was in fact the third quickest car in a straight-line, behind the Minardis. Nigel Mansell followed suit in the Brabham, putting it squarely on the front row, with team-mate Watson not far behind, starting eighth. Religious metaphors aside, the Ferraris could hardly be described as slow, as Pironi and Prost took-up the second row, and Alboreto completed the trio by qualifying sixth, just behind the lovely-sounding turbo V8 of Rosberg's Arrows.

Race Results:
Prost picks up his first win - and first points - of the year; it may be slightly delayed, but one of the sport's most revered young stars finally begins his championship challenge. Williams have now thoroughly established themselves as 'best of the rest' to Ferrari's triple-car obliteration squad. Imola marked the ocassion of Brabham and Lotus's first points of 1985, and both will be hoping for more throughout the season. A top-six finish wasn't to be for Fabi, but a solid seventh place proves his impressive qualifying performance was no fluke. While teams like Minardi and Arrows could feel rightfully disappointed with their failures to finish in Imola, it was more worrying times for McLaren and Tyrrell, who's cars appear to be nowhere near as competitive as last year.

Just in case anyone reads this and gets any ideas - developing your 1986 car is random; you may not specify an area of focus.

Arrows will spend one D&T on mechanical grip and the other on reliability. At least Rosberg appears to be rediscovering his form, based on his Imola qualifying (it seems he suits cars with higher mechanical grip)

As was the case in the previous season, we will provide compensation at a rate of 25% of the upgrade cost, for all upgrade mistakes made, now and future.

Brabham will be refunded £70,000 (25% of £120,000 + £160,000).

This transaction will take place with immediate effect.

The compensation paid will be deducted from the FOCA TV money paid to teams after round four.

We also apologize profusely for this mix-up, and are hoping to lower the number of administrative errors, this season.

Round 4 - Monaco Grand Prix, Monaco, 19th May 1985

Qualifying Results:
If it was possible to be truly comfortable, driving inches from the metal of Monaco, then Alboreto was surely it; indeed, one member of the paddock was heard to remark "there are marshalls that don't get as close [to the barrier], as Michele does." Steffan Bellof couldn't quite capture pole, but pushing back the hungry Prost and Pironi put a rare smile on Frank William's face. Both the Arrows cars qualified well, with Nannini and Rosberg in the top-eight; likewise, the Brabham team - despite lacking results on race days, so far - were comfortably in the top-ten, on the grid. Further behind, female driver Wilson enjoyed a rare opportunity to show-off her wet weather prowess again, perhaps hoping to catch the eye of a team with more competitive machinery than Alfa Romeo. The twenty-car grid saw some surprise disappointments, not least of which were both the Lotus' DNQ-ing, along with young Manfred Winkelhock's BMW car. The biggest eyebrow-raiser, though, had to be the Minardis, qualifying slowest of all bar one of the under-powered Ligiers.

The pouring rain ensured a complete reversal of the previous weekend, in Imola - the Ferrari would steal the pole, but this time it was the Williams-BMW package bringing home the bacon. Quite incredibly, today's events put Ayrton Senna into the lead of the Driver's Championship, even if only by one point over Pironi. Although Bellof led after Alboreto's retirement with engine issues, he was devastated when his turbo also failed. Nannini drove the race of his life, the Arrows-Alfa squirming and sliding at half the corners on the track; although passed by Senna mid-race, Nannini inexplicably seemed to find extra pace in the closing laps, and chased Senna down fruitlessly. The Tyrrell team enjoyed their best result of the season so far, and enthusiastically waved every pit-board they could find at Warwick and Jarrier as they passed the checkered flag. A wily drive from the experienced Laffite kept the McLaren team from sinking too low in the Constructor's Championship, while behind him, Alan Jones - who appears increasingly less-enthusiastic at every race - scored the loosely-managed Toleman team their first point. A water-soaked track caught a lot of the field out, including an over-enthusiastic Didier Pironi and Desiré Wilson, who both seemed to think that a charging drive to the front of the race was in order, and duly paid the price in the barriers.

Special Event - Zakspeed
The engine raced at present by the Zakspeed Formula One team is the '1500/4' - a unit that began life as the straight-four turbocharged engine inside their Group 5 Ford Capri - which was itself a rebuilt version of the Cosworth 'BDA' engine, comprised of a Ford 'Kent' cast iron block, an alloy head - which was later changed to aluminium to save weight, and an aftermarket turbocharger manufactured by KKK. Zakspeed and Ford cooperated several years after the racing-prepared Capri, to produce the Ford C100 car for Group C championships, in 1981. The C100 was later coupled to a Zakspeed 'C1/4' powertrain - a 1.8L turbo straight-four - with mixed results on the track, but the car's first engine - the 'C1/8' - is believed to hold the key to making the Zakspeed F1 team a competitive force. The 'C1/8' uses a four litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine - a total of thirty-two valves, with dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder - and has proved highly successful, winning last year's Interserie championship in the hands of Klaus Niedzwiedz.

After witnessing the tremendous straight-line speed advantage of the 1400+ horsepower '015T' engine, produced by Ferrari and raced by the Minardi team, Zakspeed are concerned that their traditional four-cylinder '1500/4' engine will not be competitive in the near future. Norbert Kreyer himself, who designed the engine, has said internally that he doubts the '1500/4' would ever be capable of a thousand horsepower. The company believe a turbocharged V8 that is designed, built, and tuned as well as the '1500/4' will prove unstoppable in the sport; taking into account the current engine is producing some 820HP, with twice the cylinders, a power output of 1500HP could theoretically be achieved - enough to surely dominate the championship.

Currently, Zakspeed's company budget is overextended, aiding their Formula One team and undertaking other engineering projects for private customers, and will need to borrow funds to support a new engine development programme. Keeping parity with the current situation, Zakspeed are willing to provide their F1 team with exclusive use of the prospective '1500/8', but are aware that the cost of financing the new engine may be too much for team. As such, the company will reluctantly offer a much-reduced price for the engine's development to the Zakspeed F1 team, if they are willing to allow other teams to pay for use of the '1500/8' next season, and beyond.

* Pay £9,430,000 for development, and exclusive use, of the '1500/8' engine, next season. The prospective eight-cylinder, turbocharged engine will be ready for 1986, only to the Zakspeed team.
* Pay £6,510,000 for development, and non-exclusive use, of the '1500/8' engine, next season. The prospective eight-cylinder, turbocharged engine will be ready for 1986, with a works agreement with the Zakspeed team, plus at least three other deals for supply of the unit on offer to rival teams.
* Decline the offer, and continue to develop and use the '1500/4', next season. Plans for the prospective engine will be immediately cancelled, and the Zakspeed team will continue to be offered the '1500/4' engine on a works-basis.

The Zakspeed team are requested to respond to this event.

Yes! It's a pity Rosberg couldn't make it to the finish, but with Nannini's wet weather podium we've met the targets I had for the season already (consistenly qualifying, semi-regular points, occasional podiums). With that, Arrows will spend 1 D&T on Weight Reduction, 1 on Reliability, and the other two on next year's car.
