After a brilliant showing at Australia, Minardi driver Luca Badoer is not competing here at Brazil, being replaced by Stephane Sarrazin for now. Rhys Davies is now expected to finish the race in at least 13th, after his 12th place. But Interlagos was a track he’d never driven before, and what better time to learn it than when it is absolutely bucketing down… At least he didn’t qualify last again. David Coulthard took pole ahead of the two Ferraris as he sought to take another victory, while Mika Hakkinen was somewhat disappointing in 9th.

1st: D. Coulthard (McLaren): 1:13.481
2nd: E. Irvine (Ferrari): +0.211
3rd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +0.262
4th: A. Zanardi (Williams): +0.326
5th: J. Herbert (Stewart): +0.529
6th: D. Hill (Jordan): +0.531
7th: R. Barrichello (Stewart): +0.539
8th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +0.591
9th: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.724
10th: R. Schumacher (Williams): +0.804
11th: O. Panis (Prost): +0.991
12th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +1.125
13th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +1.465
14th: J. Alesi (Sauber): +1.556
15th: J. Trulli (Prost): +1.639
16th: R. Davies (Benetton): +2.703
17th: T. Takagi (Arrows): +2.744
18th: M. Gene (Minardi): +2.914
19th: R. Zonta (BAR): +3.135
20th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +3.400
21st: S. Sarrazin (Minardi): +3.474
22nd: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +3.840

Race:
Talk about lighting starts! Davies made an absolute brilliant start to be 6th by the first corner, and passing Herbert and Zanardi for 4th at turn 1! Michael Schumacher was hit from behind by a fast starting Hakkinen, and sent into the sand without a rear wing! Hakkinen continued, and his McLaren breezed past the Benetton down the straight. Coulthard led the first lap, with Irvine second, Zanardi third, Hakkinen fourth, and Davies and Hill rounding out the points. That was until Hill spun at the first corner, allowing Ralf Schumacher past. On lap 3, Schumacher and Davies touched wheels as the German tried to make a pass, and Ralf spun, but Davies held on to his 5th spot! Herbert now inherited 6th, and started to gain on the Benetton. Hakkinen was the first of the leaders to pit, having been right behind Zanardi. At turn 8, Herbert tried passing Davies, who didn’t give enough room, and both drivers spun, allowing Frentzen and Barrichello to get past. At the back, Marc Gene’s engine started to overheat, and he retired. Herbert pitted at the end of the lap, and Davies passed Frentzen to take back 4th place. Irvine passed Coulthard at the final corner, only to give to spot back down the straight. Further back, Frentzen was all over Davies, but ran wide, relieving the pressure. It helped slightly, as they were both pitting at the end of the lap. As Davies went in, however, he had to swerve to avoid Gene, was coasting into the pits. He emerged in 9th, having been jumped by Frentzen! Ralf Schumacher had also stopped, but was well behind them both. In fact, he was passed by Diniz. 9th became 8th when Trulli stopped, but Davies had also been jumped by Alesi, who emerged a second behind Frentzen. Davies caught up quickly on warmer tyres, and drew alongside down the pit straight, but Alesi moved over, and for the third time in the race, Davies touched wheels with another driver. This time he managed to keep going, although Alesi spun, and was collected by Diniz as well! This left Davies 7th, 6 seconds down on Frentzen, 5 ahead of Ralf Schumacher, with one lap to go. Up front, Hakkinen was now fourth, and on lap 7 he set the fastest lap, but that didn’t last long, as a recovering Michael Schumacher knocked it off. However, Hakkinen was too far away from the battle for the win between Zanardi and Irvine, which the Ferrari driver won at the final corner, holding off the Williams. Where was Coulthard? Parked in the grass on the first corner, with suspension failure. Rubens Barrichello took the final podium spot at his home race, while his teammate didn’t finish, after he damaged his suspension in the collision with Davies, who held off the other Williams for 7th. Marc Gene, despite an engine drama, manage to finish 20th, but one lap down.

Re: FORCDA 2010 Season

Post by TomWazzleshaw »

Pre-Brazil:

First up was the sensational news that former Spyker driver Dave Simpson got the call-up to the race seat for Brazil after Kubica's second major accident of the year. David has been assigned the task of helping the BMW team seal the constructors championship. The fact that Simpson was given the seat over Timo Glock strengthens the rumours that the German is heading to Toyota next year and the rumours that Simpson is the "anointed one" at BMW should Melrose move on in 2009. Meanwhile Williams have officially had enough of Nick Heidfeld as he was given the cold shoulder with one race to go and was replaced by test driver Kazuki Nakajima. Finally Frank Zimmer has been confirmed at Honda next season alongside Jenson Button while Anthony Davidson is the heavy favourite for the second Super Aguri seat.

Round 17: Brazil

Qualifying:

There's just something about Daniel Melrose where if you give him a car that works he can pull out that one special lap that puts him on pole. This time it was one of his messier laps, particuarly around sector 1, but it really showed he was pushing because he ended up 6 tenths faster than his previous best and on pole by half a second ahead of the Ferraris of Massa and Raikkonen. Hamilton was 3rd while Mark Webber was within 2 hundreths of starting 3rd but in the end he had to settle for 5th while Sammy Jones was a quiet 6th. Ralf Schumacher and David Coulthard, both in their final Grand Prix, put in good performances to be 7th and 8th while Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg rounded out the top 10. Dave Simpson was an anonymous 14th but that was expected since he had never driven the car before while Kovalainen was simply crap in 17th.

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. F. Massa (Ferrari)
3. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
4. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
5. M. Webber (RBR-Renault)
6. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
7. R. Schumacher (Renault)
8. D. Coulthard (RBR-Renault)
9. S. Vettel (STR-Ferrari)
10. N. Rosberg (Williams-Toyota)
11. R. Barrichello (Honda)
12. J. Trulli (Toyota)
13. M. Ammermuller (STR-Ferrari)
14. D. Simpson (BMW)
15. T. Sato (Super Aguri-Honda)
16. J. Pablo Montoya (Toyota)
17. H. Kovalainen (Renault)
18. J. Button (Honda)
19. K. Nakajima (Williams-Toyota)
20. F. Zimmer (Super Aguri-Honda)
21. P. McAllister (Spyker-Ferrari)
22. A. Sutil (Spyker-Ferrari)

Race:

One can't help but wonder what has gone on with Daniel Melrose this season and especially in the 5 races prior to Brazil where he only won once (Italy) and finished on the podium twice (Italy and Belgium). However he put that all behind him and let his driving do the talking as there was that incredible first stint were all but 3 or 4 of his 26 laps were in 1:13s. And he had to push because Massa was on a one-stopper and not lapping that much slower to Melrose. Raikkonen may have had the pace to beat Melrose but at no point did he ever have track position over the Australian which meant Melrose won comfortably and Raikkonen finished 3rd behind his teamamte. Lewis Hamilton was lucky to finish 4th as McLaren struggled massively with Jones ending up 8th behind Rosberg, Trulli and Dave Simpson who was super-subbing in the other BMW. In their final Grand Prix David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher both had quiet races in 10th and 12th.

Results:
1. D. Melrose (BMW): 1h 27m 59.106
2. F. Massa (Ferrari): +43.770
3. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari): +56.312

San Marino

For the race at Imola, Luca Badoer would return to his Minardi seat, while Ricardo Zonta would be replaced at BAR for a few races by Mika Salo. Davies was now expected to finish 12th, which he felt wouldn’t be difficult.
In qualifying, it wasn’t very original, as Ferrari locked out the front row, McLaren filled the second row, and Williams had the third. Then it was Jordan-Stewart-Stewart-Jordan. Davies took a shot at DBTMOTR by putting his car in 22nd, while Fisichella was 11th.

1st: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): 1:11.999
2nd: E. Irvine (Ferrari): +0.17
3rd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.173
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +0.302
5th: R. Schumacher (Williams): +0.743
6th: A. Zanardi (Williams): +0.902
7th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +0.915
8th: R. Barrichello (Stewart): +1.055
9th: J. Herbert (Stewart): +1.174
10th: D. Hill (Jordan): +1.214
11th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +1.763
12th: J. Trulli (Prost): +1.822
13th: J. Alesi (Sauber): +1.912
14th: O. Panis (Prost): +2.203
15th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +2.207
16th: M. Gene (Minardi): +3.293
17th: L. Badoer (Minardi): +3.525
18th: M. Salo (BAR): +3.604
19th: T. Takagi (Arrows): +3.641
20th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +3.814
21st: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +3.947
22nd: R. Davies (Benetton): +4.036

Race:
Davies was up to 19th by the first corner, while Tora Takage made Mika Salo’s day go wrong as they collided, sending the BAR spinning. At the first corner, the Minardis collided, and Davies ran into the back of Badoer, and was hit by Salo, both of them spinning. This left Davies in 21st, trying to catch Villeneuve. He caught up at the Variante Alta, passing him and both Arrows and Gene at Rivazza, but contact with De la Rosa saw Takagi and Gene slip back through. Quite a few drivers stopped, including Hakknen, Herbert, Irvine, Frentzen and Gene. Irvine got out right behind Davies, so as he tried to catch Takagi he was making sure there as little red in his mirrors as possible. As Davies passed Takagi after Variante Alta, Irvine followed him through, and spun Davies at Rivazza. Fortunately he went 360, and stayed ahead of Takagi and passed Irvine down the pit straight. Of course, the Ferrari got back through and went in chase of Badoer, while Mika Hakkinen was now the Aussie’s biggest problem. And like Irvine, he hit Davies at Rivazza, but this time Davies wound up the wrong way and may have held up Frentzen as he tried to get going again. Not just Frentzen, but Salo, Takagi and Herbert as well. In fact, Takagi didn’t see the blockage and took himself and Herbert out of the race. At the line, he was 10th, thanks to Trulli’s stop. De la Rosa rolled into the pits with an engine problem, and went out of the race. Lap 4 saw Michael Schumacher pit from the lead, as well as Damon Hill and Rubens Barrichello. All three got out ahead of Davies, but Jean Alesi didn’t, but with Davies due to pit, it didn’t matter much. Jaques Villeneuve stopped with suspension difficulties, very nearly taking out everyone who lapped him. When Davies emerged from the pits, he was 17th, behind Panis and ahead of Salo. He was 4 seconds behind the Prost, but cut that to two at the end of the lap, giving him a shot at 16th if he could keep up the speed. He cut it 1 by the end of the first sector. As it was, Prost stuck behind Gene, who was right behind Hakkinen (engine troubles), and when he didn’t get out of the way at Variante Alta, he took out the three drivers right behind him. Gene sorted himself out first to take 14th, Panis 15th and Davies a disappointing 16th. Fisichella was 13th, while Schumacher took his first win of the season.

1st: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): 9:33.841

2008 Season Preview:

BMW Sauber F1 Team:
1. D. Melrose
2. R. Kubica
T/D. D. Simpson/M. Asmer

To put it simply BMW are in trouble. Or more to the point Melrose is in trouble as the BMW F1.08 is a stable but ultimately ineffective machine in his hands in particular as he was shockingly last in the Barcelona test and stuck in the upper-midfield in the first day of testing at Silverstone. Robert Kubica has proven to be slightly faster than Melrose by Dave Simpson found the car immediatly to his liking and was 7 tenths faster than Kubica was on day 2 of the Silverstone test and almost a second faster than anything Melrose ever managed.

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes:
3. S. Jones
4. L. Hamilton
T/D. P. De La Rosa/G. Paffett

McLaren are the team to beat. It's as simple as that really. Jones is as always a dependable and solid driver who can be relied on but Hamilton has been the best part of a quarter of a second faster than his fellow Brit.

Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro:
5. K. Raikkonen
6. F. Massa
T/D. L. Badoer/G. Fisichella

Ferrari are there or thereabouts as Raikkonen has been mixing it with the McLarens. However Massa has been almost half a second off Raikkonen's pace and was beaten by Simpson and Jones to a relatively low 5th place at Silverstone.

ING Renault F1 Team:
7. F. Alonso
8. H. Kovalainen
T/D. N. Piquet Jr/R. Grosjean

Renault may have Fernando Alonso back but there is nothing to suggest they'll be winning anything anytime soon. Infact Alonso's only fighting for minor points at best while Heikki Kovalainen is stuck in the lower midfield amongst the Williamses, Toyotas and Hondas of the F1 world.

Red Bull Racing Renault:
9. M. Webber
10. M. Ammermuller
T/D. S. Buemi/D. Coulthard

Webber picked up where he left off last season and is expected to be in an almighty scrap with Alonso and Rosberg for the final points postions. However all eyes are on the other side of the garage where thus far Michael Ammermuller has been a major disappointment and is under pressure to lift his game as there are many capable drivers who can take his seat.

AT&T WilliamsF1 Team Toyota
11. N. Rosberg
12. R. Barrichello
T/D. K. Nakajima/N. Hulkenberg

Nico Rosberg has done the great majority of the testing for Williams and has shown that the Williams is fairly quick. Rubens Barrichello will be under pressure to make the most of the situation as he'll be fighting tooth and nail in the midfield and to show that he is not a spent force in F1.

Panasonic Toyota Racing
14. J. Trulli
15. T. Glock
T/D. K. Kobayashi

The worst kept secret in F1 was confirmed as Timo Glock joined Toyota but he might start questioning the wisdom of his decision as Toyota has shown to be nothing more than anonymous midfielders in his hands but Trulli's qualifying powers may get the TF-108 into minor points finishes.

Honda Racing F1 Team
16. J. Button
17. F. Zimmer
T/D. A. Wurx/M. Conway

Jenson Button may have single handedly hauled Honda to an undeserved 8th in the constructors championship last year but so far he has been outpaced by Frank Zimmer. Not that it matters because they're in almost exactly the same position they were in except slightly closer to the front pace wise.

Scuderia Toro Rosso Ferrari
18. S. Vettel
19. S. Bourdais
T/D. T. De Bock/B. Hartley

Toro Rosso are almost exactly like Red Bull... except Slower. Vettel hasn't been able to perform any miracles so far as the "Wunderkid" as so far been fairly evenly matched with Bourdais. Nether of them can afford to put a foot wrong since Thomas De Bock is looking to make the step up to the race seat next season.

Force India Formula One Team Ferrari
20. A. Sutil
21. P. McAllister
T/D. V. Liuzzi

Force India are in a world of trouble development wise as Fisichella broke his contract in the off-season to take the Ferrari test drive and as a Sutil (Whose done the majority of the testing) is firmly entrenched in the back of the field. McAllister however has proven to be much more comfortable in the car and may pull out a surprise or two as the season goes along.

Super Aguri F1 Honda
22. T. Sato
23. A. Davidson
T/D. S. Yamamoto

There's no denying that Super Aguri are in trouble financially but Yamamoto's yen and the reallocation of prize money as a result of McLaren's involvement in the espionage scandal means that Super Aguri might make it to the end of the season. Performance wise the team is also in trouble as they are using a car that's based on last year's disappointing RA-107 but the drivers are trying to make the best of a dire situation.

Monaco Grand Prix

Let’s just pretend that Davies has any skill at street circuits. If he did, he would be up near Fisichella, the Prosts and the Saubers. But he doesn’t, and is therefore fighting the BARs, Arrows’ and Minardis. And losing…

22nd: R. Davies (Benetton): +4.376

Race:
An absolute brilliant start saw Davies get to 9th, before a few drivers spun at turn 1, including Irvine, Coulthard and Zanardi. As a result, he was up to 4th by Massenet! By the end of the first lap, it was Michael Schumacher in the lead, followed by Mika Hakkinen, and then Rhys Davies, passing Johnny Herbert at the Rascasse, with David Coulthard 5th, aided by a Ralf Schumacher spin at the first corner mess that held up the Jordans. As a direct result of that incident, Irvine retired, and Barrichello was forced into the pits. With a slightly suicidal move at Mirabeau, Davies passed Hakkinen, before passing Schumacher in the tunnel, leading the Monaco Grand Prix! He showed that when he wasn’t bashing the walls, he was actually quite quick, and immediately pulled a 4 second lead. Panis was involved in a heavy accident at the hairpin on lap 1, but managed to trundle on, being lapped three times before he got to the pits. Schumacher and Herbert stopped on lap 4, with Herbert retiring due to engine troubles, while Davies was due in on the next lap. When he got out, he was well clear of Schumacher, with only Hakkinen in front, with a 9 second gap. Since Davies had had a 14 second gap going in, he felt confident of delivering his first F1 win. Predictably, Hakkinen pitted on lap 6, leaving Davies two laps to go to seal his win. With his nearest rival, Jean Alesi, stopping on lap 6 too, it made just a bit easier. Easier still when Schumacher spun at the Rascasse, allowing Hakkinen to emerge ahead. The 4th placed David Coulthard made a meal of lapping Villeneuve, losing a bit of time, while Davies caught up to Badoer at the hairpin, and was going to just follow the Minardi home, but when the Italian locked its brakes, it was too good to resist. A few corners later, Davies crossed the line and took his first F1 victory!

Round 1: Australia

Qualifying:

There is a reason why Daniel Melrose is a three time world champion and yet again he pulled out another one lap stunner to put his unfancied BMW on pole by 3 thousandths of a second over Lewis Hamilton while Sammy Jones was only 5 hundreths of a second off Melrose in 3rd. Sebastian Bourdais was nothing short of sensational on debut by putting his Toro Rosso 5th while Frank Zimmer also impressed by putting his Honda 9th. Finally Takuma Sato pulled a miracle out of his helmet to put his Super Aguri 13th.

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
3. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
4. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
5. S. Bourdais (STR-Ferrari)
6. R. Kubica (BMW)
7. F. Massa (Ferrari)
8. F. Alonso (Renault)
9. F. Zimmer (Honda)
10. N. Rosberg (Williams-Toyota)

19. J. Button (Honda)
20. A. Davidson (Super Aguri-Honda)
21. A. Sutil (Force India-Ferrari)
22. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)

Race:
The first 5 laps of the Australian Grand Prix could prove pivotal to the outcome of the 2008 Formula One World Championship as in quick succession Lewis Hamilton, Sammy Jones and Felipe Massa all blasted past Daniel Melrose who was struggling with understeer on full tanks. Kimi Raikkonen tried to put a move on the Australian aswell but only succeeded in putting himself out of points contention for the rest of the afternoon. After lap 6 the order at the top remained fairly static with Hamilton leading from Jones, Massa, Melrose, Bourdais and Kubica.

The major pitstops began on lap 21 with Hamilton and Massa pitting giving Jones the lead. Jones pitted on lap 23 handing the lead over to Melrose who was trying to make the most of the clear track and low fuel load in his ill-handling BMW. And he had to because he had made the call to convert a one-stopper because the incorrectly set up gearbox had the unexpected benefit of better fuel economy. Melrose pitted at the end of lap 28 and emerged 5th behind Jones who had leapfrogged his teammate at the stops, Hamilton, Frank Zimmer who was also on a one-stopper and Massa with the two Toro Rossos running line-astern in 6th and 7th.

Melrose was in all sorts of problems during the second half of the race as his lack of pace on full tanks showed as Jones managed to stay ahead of Melrose after his second stop. Neither Hamilton or Massa could capitalise on Melrose's struggles as they both emerged behind the Australian. It was set to remain this way except for the fact Hamilton and Massa were catching Melrose at the rate of knots. Hamilton got past with a handful of laps to go with Massa fell a few laps short which left Jones to collect his second career win. Sebastian Vettel starred in 5th place while Sebastian Bourdais was 7th right behind Frank Zimmer who finished an impressive 6th. Robert Kubica lost out during both pitstop phases to finish a lonely 8th.

Results:
1. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes): 1h 27m 05.177
2. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes): +6.769

Spanish Grand Prix

After his surprise win at Monaco, Davies was set a traget of 10th place for the race in Spain. And with his win, he disappointed somewhat by qualifying 14th, still behind his teammate. But he was less than a tenth away, and when you consider that he has rarely been off the back two rows this season, that's actually a fair effort. Up front, Coulthard set his pole time early in the session, and a late run from Schumacher barely missed out on knocking it off.

1st: D. Coulthard (McLaren): 1:15.123
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +0.001
3rd: E. Irvine (Ferrari): +0.221
4th: R. Barrichello (Stewart): +0.748
5th: D. Hill (Jordan): +1.083
6th: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +1.085
7th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +1.392
8th: O. Panis (Prost): +1.575
9th: J. Trulli (Prost): +1.604
10th: A. Zanardi (Williams): +1.700
11th: J. Herbert (Stewart): +1.901
12th: J. Alesi (Sauber): +2.015
13th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +2.076
14th: R. Davies (Benetton): +2.121
15th: R. Schumacher (Williams): +2.179
16th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +2.384
17th: M. Salo (BAR): +3.360
18th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +3.720
19th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +3.836
20th: L. Badoer (Minardi): +3.878
21st: T. Takagi (Arrows): +3.925
22nd: M. Gene (Minardi): +4.642

Race:
Yet another lightning start saw Davies jump to 6th, although both he and Damon Hill had a hard time passing a swerving Mika Hakkinen. At the start however, Herbert got a bit crazy, and took out Alex Zanardi. Unlike at Monaco, the Benetton didn’t have the speed, and while Hill got away, Davies became a roadblock for Frentzen. Up front, Coulthard pitted, handing the lead to Schumacher. Schumacher, Barrichello and Hill stopped on the next lap, giving the lead to Irvine, who promptly spun at turn 1. However, being way ahead of Davies, that wasn’t a massive problem for him. Davies had started to pull a 3 second lead over Frentzen, while still losing ground to Irvine. However, he took over the race lead when the Ferrari (and Frentzen behind him) stopped to pit. Out the back, Gene had another engine failure, but this time couldn’t get back to the pits, retiring on the spot. Alesi’s suspension gave out while he was third, but he managed to make the pits, emerging a lap down. Davies stopped on lap 4, as well as Panis, who had gained on him big time. This left Fisichella in the lead. Davies would be racing Frentzen out of the pits, until the Jordan encountered suspension problems too! Unfortunately, the Benetton crew were a bit slow, and Davies lost out to Panis and Jaqcues Villeneuve! He got Villeneuve at the first corner, and passed Panis when the Prost ran straight into Alesi, who had stopped with an overheating engine, forcing Panis to stop for repairs. Davies was now 9th, with Ralf Schumacher in P8, and Fisichella was P1 but about to pit. Davies felt that he had been let down by his pit crew, who gave Fisichella a brilliant stop that put him in P8, 4 seconds up the road from Davies! He had Villeneuve right behind him, but that became Diniz when Pedro knocked him off the road. Then, on the final lap, Coulthard, who had an absolute shocker of a race, made a meal of passing Irvine, and they both spun. Irvine managed to continue, as did Coulthard, but it brought the yellow flags. This didn’t bode well for Fisichella, who had to pass the slow McLaren, and got a stop-go penalty. On the final lap! Unfortunately, Davies and Diniz both passed him too, and while Davies got slapped with a penalty, Diniz didn’t   ! Coulthard was going ridiculously slow, and there was no point in letting him through, but the two Benetton drivers had a decision to make. Keep going and take the flag, or coast down the lane, take the penalty, even though their pit bay was beyond the start line? While all this was going on, Schumacher won the race. But who cares? Both Benettons went to serve the penalty, and crossed the line in the process. Fisichella wound up 6th, but unsurprisingly, Diniz went right past Davies and took 7th. Grrr…

Canadian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Finally, Davies found some qualifying speed, as he manage to put his Benetton in 5th place, well ahead of Fisichella. On his best lap, he was 3 tenths faster than Hakkinen in both the first and third sectors, but a costly mistake in the second ruined his shot at pole.

1st: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): 1:15.575
2nd: M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +0.009
3rd: E. Irvine (Ferrari): +0.046
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +0.307

12th: O. Panis (Prost): +1.281
13th: J. Trulli (Prost): +1.283
14th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +1.400
15th: J. Alesi (Sauber): +1.719

20th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +3.795
21st: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +3.843
22nd: T. Takagi (Arrows): +3.960

Race:
An alright start from Davies saw him be passed by Hill and Barrichello, but dive at the first corner got him to 4th, and gained another spot when the two Ferraris came together, sending Irvine into the wall. Unable to keep up with Hakkinen and Schumacher, they disappeared into the distance, and on lap 2, he had Barrichello and Coulthard right behind him. At turn 3, Barrichello tried to get up the inside, only for the door to get closed by Davies, spinning them both as well as Coulthard, who rear ended the wall and lost his wing. Davies got out of it first, but Zanardi was now third, having snuck through the carnage, and now had Frentzen behind him, who gave him a tap on the run down to turn 8, spinning Davies, who took out a few more drivers, including Panis, Trulli, Hill and Zonta. Schumacher decided to pit from P2 while this went on. Davies left stuck behind the Arrows of Tora Takagi, and at turn 1, when Takagi had to dodge Schumacher, Davies hit him, and both spun, allowing Ricardo Zonta to take 6th. On lap 4, Davies was hit by De la Rosa, Diniz and Irvine in the space of 500 metres, and he discovered that someone (maybe Giancarlo…) had messed with his setup, meaning that the car was massively oversteering at virtually every corner. As he pitted, he hit David Coulthard, who had taken three laps to get back. When Davies got out, he was in 17th, jumped by Gene and Diniz. Coming out of the hairpin, he passed the slow Frentzen, who had overheated his engine. He passed a few drivers who had pitted, as well as Gene at turn 1, and was trying to catch Hill. The problem was, he had Hakkinen bearing down on him fast. He tried to let him through at the hairpin, but Hakkinen ran wide anyway, allowing Davies to drive off. He then heard the words “Giancarlo is entering the pits” over his radio shortly afterwards, so imagine how pissed he was when Fisichella was still ahead of him? A few laps later, Davies crossed the line 12th, barely on the lead lap, annoyed that the team had lied about Fisichella, and that they had mucked up his setup, but happy he’d kept out of the Wall of Champions, and when Fisichella put his car in the wall on the warm down lap. Ha!

That massive oversteer sounds like you had suspension damage to me. Bit of a crash-fest, you're unlucky not to have capitalised on all the retirements! Still, congrats on the win at Monaco! :)

French Grand Prix
Qualifying

Magny-Cours is yet another track where Davies has no experience, but he managed to chop a good 6 seconds from his first time in practice to get his quali time. But yet again he was way behind Fisichella. And at least he was beating the Minardis this time.

Race:
Davies does it again! What was lacking at Canada was his usual start, but here in France he jumped to 9th, albeit helped by a stalled Ferrari (might’ve been Irvine). At the Nurburgring chicane, Herbert went off, giving his 8th place spot to Davies, but he had a dive down the inside that cost him rear wing at the next corner. He then spent the next few laps between Hill and Fisichella, until Giancarlo stopped, putting Alesi behind him. They had gained a few spots as Zanardi and another unnamed driver pitted (my engineer isn’t very reliable in this information - remember Canada?). Davies was due to stop on lap 5, and was aiming at coming out in 12th, which was apparently between Frentzen and Fisichella. As he went in, he got the news that Barrichello’s engine had gone boom. The good news about the stop? He came out in 12th. The bad news? Fisichella was 11th. The worse news? Diniz was behind him, and they hadn’t even gotten to Estoril before the Benetton had been spun. The better news? Frentzen’e engine went, trapping Diniz behind him, and hitting Trulli, but the Italian continued. This lifted Davies into 10th, still behind Trulli, and barely ahead of Diniz after a little mistake. He picked up two more spots when Panis and Coulthard stopped (Coulthard had a problem, since he’d already had one stop). Herbert decided to not be a gracious backmarker, hitting Hill and very nearly retiring. With Zonta pitting on lap 7, Davies was 7th, but annoyingly, Trulli had gotten away, but Panis was busy defending from Diniz, so as long as he could deliver a clean last lap, 7th would be his. At least his was clean, but for Diniz, a massive dive at Imola resulted in a metting with the wall. But again he was considering why life (Or his team…?) hated him, as Fisichella crossed the line 5th.

Next is the British GP at Silverstone.

But before that, Davies has got some offers to switch teams mid-season. Benetton have put in a bid for his services, and Prost have done the same after they had a go at the start of the season. But the third offer was from Williams, the team Davies had always dreamed of driving for, even if they were useless right now, so he jumped at the chance to drive for them. He felt good about his chances for at least some points now.

British Grand Prix

Qualifying:

After he decided to abandon Benetton, Davies immediately proved it was a good idea by outqualifying both Fisichella and Alexander Wurz, who had replaced him. At Williams, Ralf Schumacher was the outcast, with Davies forcing him out. Up front, it was a McLaren front row and Ferrari second row, as usual devoid of any originality.

1st: D. Coulthard (McLaren): 1:15.527
2nd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.007

Race:
The start wasn’t especially brilliant, with Davies losing his spot to Damon Hill, but gaining one back when Frentzen went spinning off. Apart from that, an uneventful first lap. Coulthard went into the pits from the lead at the end of the lap. On lap 2, Schumacher and Hills stopped as well, and Herbert got ahead of Davies when he ran wide at Stowe. On lap 3, Zonta retired when his engine blew up. On lap 3, Irvine, Herbert and Davies all stopped. Davies emerged 11th, but had decided already that he liked Williams better, who had gotten him out right behind, while with Benetton (knowing his luck), he’d have been jumped by Diniz. A few drivers spun on some oil on the run down to Abbey (most notably Schumacher and Coulthard, who beached himself and retired as a result) which had been left there by Zonta. When the engine of Panis blew, it dropped oil at Brooklands, making driving there rather difficult, and Davies fell victim to this, allowing Herbert to get away. By the final lap, Davies was 7th, unable to catch Herbert, and set for yet more annoyance at being unable to score more points, while his teammate scored a podium… Oh well, at least he beat the Benettons!

Austrian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

This race is similar to Brazil in many ways. First, it's a track Davies has never raced at before. Second, during practice, when he'd have to learn the track, it was raining. And third, he couldn't string more than 2 laps together without going straight ahead at turn 1. That meant that in qualifying, three of his flyers were ruined almost before they even started. His one good lap was spoilt by the fact that Williams decided wet tyres were necessary. All well and good, but the track had been drying, and the rain had stopped. So predictably, Davies was the slowest driver. As an added bonus, he discovered that he was a good half a second outside the 107% time. Oh dear. But fortunately, due to his clean laps being fairly competetive during practice (and he put his uselessness at turn 1 down to the wet weather), he was allowed to start. Ricardo Zonta was also outside 107%, but if Davies got to start, he did too.

Oh, and it seems that Michael Schumacher's spin at Silverstone must have done something, because Mika Salo is driving his Ferrari.

1st: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): 1:05.739
2nd: E. Irvine (Ferrari): +0.083
3rd: M. Salo (Ferrari): +0.096
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +0.262
5th: D. Hill (Jordan): +0.860
6th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +0.902
7th: R. Barrichello (Stewart): +1.015
8th: J. Herbert (Stewart): +1.156
9th: A. Wurz (Benetton): +1.512
10th: J. Trulli (Prost): +1.597
11th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +1.737
12th: A. Zanardi (Williams): +1.984
13th: O. Panis (Prost): +2.067
14th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +2.457
15th: J. Alesi (Sauber): +2.594
16th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +3.055
17th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +3.058
18th: M. Gene (Minardi): +3.136
19th: L. Badoer (Minardi): +3.706
20th: T. Takagi (Arrows): +4.291
21st: R. Zonta (BAR): +4.635
22nd: R. Davies (Williams): +4.740

And so, with the rain now coming down again, from last on the grid, aiming for 7th place at least, Davies needed a good start. And up to 13th as everyone slipped and slid around him is pretty good. Of course, when Jarno Trulli hit the brakes for no apparent reason down the straight, Davies was stuck behind him, and dropped to 15th. However, by passing Villeneuve and Trulli, he was 13th again by the end of the lap. He managed to avoid going straight ahead at turn 1 this time by trying to avoid a spinning Diniz, but he had the feeling he would struggle from now on as the Sauber took out the braking markers. He managed to pass Alesi in the other Sauber at the second to last corner for 11th, which became 10th when Frentzen pitted. By using Fisichella as a brake marker, he managed to stay on the road, and found himself at the end of a train of cars, with Fisichella just ahead. He passed his old teammate at turn 4, and now had Coulthard in front. He tried to pass down the pit straight (gaining a spot when Wurz pitted), but Coulthard closed the door. A few times. He got past at the hairpin anyway, and was now 6th, with Herbert 11 seconds in front. Until he and Irvine stopped, anyway, leaving the other Stewart of Barrichello ahead. Davies stopped on lap 5, along with Fisichella, who had now passed Coulthard when he had stopped. And surprise, surprise, Davies lost his spot to the Benetton in the pits. And Coulthard, but he got a good exit and tried to pass him on the straight, where Coulthard closed the door. This time, Davies held his line and sent the McLaren spinning. He went past Fisichella down the next straight and overtook Panis at turn 4, putting Davies in P9 with Wurz ahead. At the front, Hakkinen also lost his spot in the pits as Mika Salo went past. He made a spot when someone stopped (I didn’t see who), and found himself 7th when he passed Wurz. With one and half laps to go, he just needed to pass Barrichello to score a point… but the Brazilian was 8 seconds ahead. Davies gained a bit when Zonta’s suspension went and he made a nuisance of himself when Barrichello came by. And then, as he finished the second sector, the clouds parted, the sun came out, and left everyone with one lap to complete on wet tyres. This gave Davies an advantage, because he had very recently driven with wets on a drying track, and by the end of the lap he just needed to make up 7 seconds on Barrichello. He gained 2 seconds in the first sector. But then, a miracle - Damon Hill, who had been running 4th, had his suspension give out! He had just rounded the final corner, while Davies still had two to go. As he came out of the final corner, he saw Hill in the pits, gunned it - and barely took 5th place! (Hakkinen finished 8th after hitting Hill and allowing Davies and Fisichella through). Mika Salo took the win, beating Herbert and Irvine to the top step.

I have a feeling that, according to the game, Schumacher will be champion, simply because Salo has picked up all his points, and actually added to them with his win. It's stupid. As an added bonus, Ralf is techincally no longer in the championship, but Alex Wurz is now apparently on 6 points. I have a feeling that had Sarrazin scored at Brazil, they would be recorded as Badoer's, and any points that Salo may have scored at BAR would have counted for Zonta.

Anyway, next is the German GP at Hockenheim.

German Grand Prix

Qualifying:

It didn't take long in practice for Davies to find a good compromise between speed and downforce, and would have been closer to pole had it not been for a minor stuff up at the first corner, managing to get the fastest times to the second and third sectors. The last time Davies started this high, however, was in Montreal, and that was an average showing at best.

Race:
Still fourth by turn one, Davies was caught up in an incident started by Salo hitting Hakkinen, before Salo was hit by Davies, who got hit by Alesi, etc. When he managed to get going again, he was 8th, with Herbert behind and Luca Badoer in front! However, he passed the Minardi on the way out of the first chicane, and was now chasing down Coulthard. With Irvine, Trulli and Coulthard (and someone else) pitting, Davies was third, with Johnny Herbert 4th, after he easily out dragged Badoer’s Minardi. Hakkinen, who had inherited the lead, stopped on lap 2, giving Damon Hill the lead. Herbert, who had caught up to the Williams, tried a move at the first chicane, that resulted in Davies spinning and dropping to 5th, with Hakkinen and Villeneuve now ahead. As he tried to pass Villeneuve at the second chicane, Villeneuve shut the door - while they were side by side! Davies again spun, dropping behind his teammate. He had to stop at the end of the lap, and with new tyres and topped up fuel, he emerged 13th, behind Fisichella. But at the first chicane, the car very nearly spun out of its own accord, in a similar way to what happened at Canada… Now stuck driving an ill handling car for 3 more laps that couldn’t decide if it wanted to oversteer or understeer, Davies lost several seconds to Fisichella, and Gene, who had pitted at the same time, cut the gap from 9 seconds to 4. By the last lap, the only reason Davies was still ahead of Gene was because his car was much faster, not allowing Gene to get close enough to even attempt a pass. By the end of the lap he had held a 5 second gap over Gene, but nowhere near Fisichella. Once again, a promising qualifying ruined by idiots that can’t pass. Actually, when Davies thought about it, all his points this year had come from 22nd on the grid… Oh, and wondering if Badoer scored points? Well, he was running 5th with two to go, when Johnny Herbert knocked him into the wall on the last corner. Karm struck, as Herbert only wound up 7th.

Round 2: Malaysia

Qualifying:

In the lead-up to qualy Daniel Melrose was in all sorts of trouble as his pace suggested he wouldn't be on the front row. Hell he faced an uphill battle to just qualify in the top 15 but a set-up change and a banzai lap put the Australian in 6th place which was only 2 places behind his teammate Robert Kubica but almost half a second slower. Up front and Lewis Hamilton led the way from Kimi Raikkonen with Sammy Jones 3rd. Michael Ammermuller put in a sterling effort to put his RB4 7th on the grid while Renault continued to struggle with Alonso 12th and Kovalainen 14th.

Grid:
1. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
2. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
3. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
4. R. Kubica (BMW)
5. F. Massa (Ferrari)
6. D. Melrose (BMW)
7. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)
8. J. Trulli (Toyota)
9. S. Vettel (STR-Ferrari)
10. J. Button (Honda)

14. H. Kovalainen (Renault)
15. F. Zimmer (Honda)
16. A. Davidson (Super Aguri-Honda)
17. S. Bourdais (STR-Ferrari)
18. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)
19. T. Sato (Super Aguri-Honda)
20. R. Barrichello (Williams-Toyota)
21. T. Glock (Toyota)
22. A. Sutil (Force India-Ferrari)

Race:

The front row made a strategic gamble with Hamilton going for a three stopper while Raikkonen went for a one stop strategy but both were trumped by a simply supurb drive by Sammy Jones who stormed to victory ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen. Robert Kubica would have finished 3rd had he not collided with the stricken Nico Rosberg who had spun in the middle of the track. Rosberg would retire a few laps later after getting stuck in a gravel trap after being tapped by Jenson Button. Daniel Melrose finished 4th in the other BMW while Mark Webber finished 5th place. Felipe Massa finished a disappointing 6th while Frank Zimmer continued his good early season form in 7th. The feelgood story of the day had to be Super Aguri as against all the odds on and off the track they finished 8th (Davidson) and 9th (Sato) which was one of their best results ever. Phoenix McAllister was another standout performer by finishing 11th in the Force India.

Yes... this is how desperate I am to not drive the BMW F1.08:

2004: Round 3: Bahrain:

Qualifying:

Grid:
1. M. Schumacher (Ferrari)
2. J. Pablo Montoya (Williams-BMW)
3. R. Schumacher (Williams-BMW)
4. J. Button (BAR-Honda)
5. T. Sato (BAR-Honda)
6. R. Barrichello (Ferrari)
7. J. Trulli (Renault)
8. D. Coulthard (McLaren-Mercedes)
9. O. Panis (Toyota)
10. G. Fisichella (Sauber-Petronas)
11. C. Da Matta (Toyota)
12. C. Klien (Jaguar-Cosworth)
13. M. Webber (Jaguar-Cosworth)
14. F. Massa (Sauber-Petronas)
15. D. Melrose (Minardi-Cosworth)
16. F. Alonso (Renault)
17. G. Pantano (Jordan-Ford)
18. Z. Baumgartner (Minardi-Cosworth)
19. N. Heidfeld (Jordan-Ford)
20. K. Raikkonen (McLaren-Mercedes)

Race:

Up till the beginning of lap 30 when the race was red-flagged the race was turning into a brilliant strategic battle between the one stoppers (Melrose, Button and Trulli) verses the two-stoppers which was effectively the rest of the top 10. In the end it all turned out to be anti-climatic as the surface at turn 11 broke up badly before Melrose and Button could make their stops. However there was nothing to suggest that Barrichello or Sato could have finished on the podium regardless of whether the race was restarted or not as Melrose and Button had track position and pace on near empty tanks over the rest of the field bar a certain Michael Schumacher who cruised home to an easy win. Minardi's gamble paid off as Daniel Melrose finished an incredible 2nd with Jenson Button finishing 3rd ahead of teammate Sato, Barrichello, Ralf Schumacher, Olivier Panis, Mark Webber and Jarno Trulli who just missed out on points when he made his one and only stop mere minutes before the red flag came out. However Sato and Ralf Schumacher are both under investigation for rule infringments and their results are provisional.

Results (28 laps completed):
1. M. Schumacher (Ferrari): 43m 04.820s
2. D. Melrose (Minardi-Cosworth): +15.097

18. K. Raikkonen (McLaren-Mercedes): +1 LAP

GP4 won't stop eating through savefiles and I really don't feel like doing Bahrain yet again so I'm considering posting the results after 28 laps since the game crashes once I start lap 30.

EDIT: After several attempts at trying to fix the savefile I've offically given up and posted the results after 28 laps (The wretched thing ate through 8 savefiles while I was trying to do this race. I would have prefered doing the full race distance though to see if I really could have made the one stopper work and get ahead of the Sato/Barrichello battle as a result after they stopped for a second time.

2008: Round 3: Bahrain

Qualifying:

Before Bahrain everyone at BMW admitted that the F1.08 is inferior to the McLaren MP4-23 and the Ferrari F2008 but even with the odds against him Daniel Melrose pulled out yet another incredible lap to put his BMW on pole by nearly 3 tenths ahead of the McLarens of Hamilton and Jones. Renault were the surprise performers with Kovalainen 4th and Alonso 6th while Toro Rosso disappointed by locking out the 8th row.

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
3. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
4. H. Kovalainen (Renualt)
5. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
6. F. Alonso (Renault)
7. R. Kubica (BMW)
8. F. Massa (Ferrari)
9. J. Trulli (Toyota)
10. T. Glock (Toyota)
11. M. Webber (RBR-Renault)
12. N. Rosberg (Williams-Toyota)
13. F. Zimmer (Honda)
14. R. Barrichello (Williams-Toyota)
15. S. Bourdais (STR-Ferrari)
16. S. Vettel (STR-Ferrari)
17. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)
18. J. Button (Honda)
19. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)
20. A. Sutil (Force India-Ferrari)
21. T. Sato (Super Aguri-Honda)
22. A. Davidson (Super Aguri-Honda)

Qualifying 2:

Between the two qualifying sessions something must have clicked in the head of Daniel Melrose as he was simply astonishing as he went a second quicker than he did in qualifying one to take home pole by over a second ahead of Felipe Massa, Sammy Jones, Kimi Raikonen and Lewis Hamilton. Ammermuller and Bourdais found pace to end up 9th and 10th while Kovalainen was the big loser going from 4th to 11th.

Grid:
1. D. Melrose (BMW)
2. F. Massa (Ferrari)
3. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
4. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
5. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
6. R. Kubica (BMW)
7. F. Alonso (Renault)
8. M. Webber (RBR-Renault)
9. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)
10. S. Bourdais (STR-Ferrari)
11. H. Kovalainen (Renault)
12. J. Trulli (Toyota)
13. N. Rosberg (Williams-Toyota)
14. R. Barrichello (Williams-Toyota)
15. S. Vettel (STR-Ferrari)
16. F. Zimmer (Honda)
17. T. Glock (Toyota)
18. J. Button (Honda)
19. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)
20. A. Sutil (Force India-Ferrari)
21. T. Sato (Super Aguri-Honda)
22. A. Davidson (Super Aguri-Honda)

Race:
After leading the first two laps of the Bahrain Grand Prix Daniel Melrose's horrible start to the season continued as midway around lap 3 a gear selection issue manifested itself which forced Melrose to take a tour down pitlane and after converting to a one-stop fuel load did nothing for the rest of the afternoon as he was relegated to also ran status by finishing 10th after benefiting from the abnormally high attrition rate.

Infact the unreliabilty of the cars in the sweltering heat was the major story of the day as Ammermuller was the first to drop out as he retired after just two laps with transmission issues. Button retired a few laps later with a suspension failure while McAllister followed a few laps later. Davidson held Melrose at bay for two laps before he retired with a water leak on lap 19 while on lap 25 BMW's miserable afternoon was complete when Robert Kubica's BMW powerplant set itself on fire. Takuma Sato was the next to go with brake problems while Fernando Alonso's engine also expired just before his second stop while on track for an unexpected 4th place. Rubens Barrichello's engine was the latest to explode as he retired with 3 laps to go while Kimi Raikkonen was lucky to make it to the finish after his Ferrari engine started crying enough of the final lap.

The other major talking point was strategy as Felipe Massa was the only frontrunner to adopt a one stop strategy and it paid dividends as he won by a dozen seconds ahead of Sammy Jones. Lewis Hamilton was battling Raikkonen for 3rd before he speared off the track midway through the race leaving him to finish an eventual 11th while Mark Webber was the only midfield runner to make the two stop strategy by finishing a magnificent 4th while Sebastian Vettel was the best of the one-stoppers from the mifield in 5th ahead of Heikki Kovalainen, Jarno Trulli and Sebastian Bourdais.

Results:
1. F. Massa (Ferrari): 1h 30m 45.045
2. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes): +12.747
3. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari): +23.879
4. M. Webber (RBR-Renault): +44.380

Hungarian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

During practice, Davies was struggling with a lack of knowledge about the track, and it showed when he continued to find the sand at the same corners on almost every lap, setting a best time of about 1:10.9. He wasn't feeling very confident, because that had been the only lap where he'd kept it on the road (mostly...), but when Eddie Irvine went out in qualifying and set his first time, a 1:11.5, Davies felt more confident, and on his second flyer took provisional pole by 4 tenths over Irvine's new best of 1:11.1, and on his third Davies broke into the 1:09s, taking his first career pole position, and in the process putting 6 drivers outside 107%. Of course, there is still his curse of being unable to score points from anywhere near the front of the grid...

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 1:09.495
2nd: E. Irvine (Ferrari): +1.674
3rd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +1.822
4th: M. Salo (Ferrari): +2.000
5th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +2.340
6th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +2.423
7th: A. Zanardi (Williams): +2.872
8th: R. Barrichello (Stewart): +2.950
9th: J. Trulli (Prost): +3.111
10th: D. Hill (Jordan): +3.194
11th: O. Panis (Prost): +3.284
12th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +3.334
13th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +3.397
14th: J. Alesi (Sauber): +3.431
15th: J. Herbert (Stewart): +3.439
16th: A. Wurz (Benetton): +3.794
17th: M. Gene (Minardi): +5.047
18th: R. Zonta (BAR): +5.071
19th: T. Takagi (Arrows): +5.372
20th: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +5.504
21st: L. Badoer (Minardi): +5.599
22nd: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +5.638

Race:
Of course, those slow 6 were allowed to start the race (why, I don’t know). He managed to outrun Irvine to the first corner, and held the lead afterwards. The only incident of note was contact between Pedro Diniz and Alexander Wurz, while at turn 2 Rubens Barrichello and Damon Hill came together. Marc Gene also found his way into the grass. Davies immediately pulled a three second lead and set about cementing that so he wouldn’t be too far back when he came in for his scheduled stop on lap 4. Mika Salo stopped on lap 2, from third place. Irvine stopped on lap 3, leaving Mika Hakkinen second. Unlike Irvine, Hakkinen had a very low downforce setup, and with a much better handling McLaren, caught up to Davies straight away, who still couldn’t keep the car on the track for very long. Hakkinen wasn’t very gracious, however, almost literally knocking Davies off the road, allowing Coulthard and Zanardi to get past the Aussie as well. Both of the Williams drivers nearly stacked when lapping De la Rosa, whose engine had overheated and was trundling down the middle of the track, and both were lucky to get past him. However, as Davies drew side by with Zanardi, he moved across, and spun Davies, but fortunately he was in the pit entrance. Unfortunately, he was facing the wrong way, and so spent a few seconds trying to right himself before he did eventually get in. He emerged in 15th, while Hakkinen, who had stopped at the same time, was 10th, and Irvine 14th after a slow stop. He caught the Ferrari fairly quickly, but couldn’t get past. However, thanks to a lot of stoppers ahead, he found himself in 6th place anyway, albeit with Frentzen now right behind him. On lap 7, Davies passed Irvine for 5th, and had Zanardi 2 seconds up the road. Then on the final lap, at the last corner, Zanardi lost the rear end and spun! Could this be another Austria? Well, no, because he took Davies with him. Bu fortunately, Davies was still going straight ahead, and despite Irvine and Frentzen going past, Davies still managed to take 6th and another point. Barely, because Zanardi had also been going straight ahead, but was disadvantaged by the sand he’d found his way into. But Davies was happy with 6th. He scored a point, took pole position and scored fastest lap at the same time (Wizzie: I apparently got fastest lap in Austria too).

Belgian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Oh dear. Davies never really got the hang of Spa, not aided by the rain, and especially at Pouhon and Stavelot, where he went off on every flyer in qualifying, putting himself last, almost 7 seconds slower than Salo and 1 off the 21st placed Zonta.

1st: M. Salo (Ferrari): 1:42.240
2nd: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +0.068
3rd: E. Irvine (Ferrari): +0.609
4th: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.648

20th: L. Badoer (Minardi): +5.509
21st: R. Zonta (BAR): +5.877
22nd: R. Davies (Williams): +6.820

Race:
Fortunately, there would only be 6 laps of pain to sit through. Sitting at the start, he was thinking about how he had absolutely nothing to lose, and made another blinding start, getting to 10th, aided by a spin from Fisichella at La Source. He passed Trulli on the run to Eau Rouge, and Barrichello at Les Combes, now in 8th place. However, he somewhat predictably went wide at Stavelot, letting Barrichello back through. With Salo and Barrichello pitting, he was now 7th, with Panis in front and De la Rosa doing well, a few seconds behind. He spent the lap trying to catch Panis, but again ran off at Stavelot, letting the Prost get away and the Arrows catch up. He managed to get a good run through the chicane and La Source to get right back behind Panis through Eau Rouge, passing him for 5th (someone pitted) down the straight. The next driver in line was Hill, 11 seconds up the road. Then, just after Pouhon, catastrophe, as Davies loses 6th gear! Of course, thanks the slower speed, he managed to stay on the road at Stavelot, and pitted from 5th thanks to a spin there from Panis. He emerged 10th, but things went from bad to worse as he received a stop-go penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Great… As an added bonus, running off at Pouhon and Stavelot saw him serve his penalty from right in front of De la Rosa. He got out in 20th (!), but that became 18th when Diniz and Panis came together at Eau Rouge, then 17th when Villeneuve’s engine gave out on the straight. He gained two more spots on the final lap when Wurz and Herbert hit each other, both retiring on the spot. Davies would end up 15th, behind Takagi and ahead of Panis.

Pre-Spain:

The start of the European season marks the start of the silly season as Heikki Kovalainen is allegedely looking for a way out of Renault as the team enters its second season of midfield mediocrity. Kovalainen has said he is unimpressed at how the team has gone backwards since the glory days of 2005 and 2006 when Kovy was more often than not challenging for major points and podiums. The smart money is betting on him becoming McLaren's test driver next season should he leave Renault. Meanwhile Sir Frank has given an ultimatum to his drivers as the team is currently last in the constructors championship: Perform or face the sack.

Round 4: Spain

Qualifying:

Sammy Jones may have put in his worst qualifying performance of the season to be 6th but that was nothing compared to the difficulties Daniel Melrose was having as he fought his tempermental BMW around the Barcelona circuit and as a result qualified outside the top 10 for the first time on pace alone since the 2005 Italian Grand Prix. Up front it was Kimi Raikkonen leading the way from Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa and Robert Kubica while Mark Webber did a brilliant job to qualify 5th. Other surprises included Jenson Button in 8th and Phoenix McAllister in a supurb 14th.

Grid:
1. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
2. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
3. F. Massa (Ferrari)
4. R. Kubica (BMW)
5. M. Webber (RBR-Renault)
6. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
7. F. Alonso (Renault)
8. J. Button (Honda)
9. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)
10. J. Trulli (Toyota)
11. R. Barrichello (Williams-Toyota)
12. D. Melrose (BMW)
13. T. Glock (Toyota)
14. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)
15. N. Rosberg (Williams-Toyota)
16. F. Zimmer (Honda)
17. S. Bourdais (STR-Ferrari)
18. T. Sato (Super Aguri-Honda)
19. S. Vettel (STR-Ferrari)
20. H. Kovalainen (Renault)
21. A. Davidson (Super Aguri-Honda)
22. A. Sutil (Force India-Ferrari)

Qualifying 2:
(The lap distance issue reared its ugly head yet again)

Grid:
1. F. Massa (Ferrari)
2. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari)
3. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes)
4. R. Kubica (BMW)
5. S. Jones (McLaren-Mercedes)
6. J. Button (Honda)
7. M. Webber (RBR-Renault)
8. D. Melrose (BMW)
9. F. Alonso (Renault)
10. M. Ammermuller (RBR-Renault)
11. J. Trulli (Toyota)
12. R. Barrichello (Williams-Toyota)
13. T. Glock (Toyota)
14. N. Rosberg (Williams-Toyota)
15. F. Zimmer (Honda)
16. P. McAllister (Force India-Ferrari)
17. S. Bourdais (STR-Ferrari)
18. T. Sato (Super Aguri-Honda)
19. H. Kovalainen (Renault)
20. S. Vettel (STR-Ferrari)
21. A. Davidson (Super Aguri-Honda)
22. A. Sutil (Force India-Ferrari)

Race:
Daniel Melrose did some full fuel load runs in warmup and went for the one stopper because of it. The end result? He drove his heart out for... 20th place. The less said about his day the better except he did accidentally punt Massa off the road when he had the insane idea to try and race the leaders as they came to lap him. Sammy Jones had an equally dramatic day with an electrical problem forcing him to pit for his only stop 4-5 laps earlier than planned which put him out of podium contention for the rest of the race. Meanwhile upfront Kimi Raikkonen took the win from Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica with Felipe Massa eventually finishing 4th. Red Bull scored double points finishes with 5th and 7th while Jarno Trulli took home the final point. Honda had a miserable day as both retired with gearbox issues while both were in contention for points.

Results:
1. K. Raikkonen (Ferrari): 1h 32m 08.375
2. L. Hamilton (McLaren-Mercedes): +5.085
3. R. Kubica (BMW): +12.012

2004: Round 4: San Marino

Qualifying:

It was clear during practice that Daniel Melrose immediatly got the car "hooked up" to the track as the Minardi was handing the corners and kerbs beautifully. Paul Stoddart was even making noises about how Melrose would break into the top 10 in qualy. Sadly it was not to be as Melrose put his Minardi 13th on the grid while Jenson Button stole the show ahead of Michael Schumacher, Juan Montoya and Rubens Barrichello.

Grid:
1. J. Button (BAR-Honda)
2. M. Schumacher (Ferrari)
3. J. Pablo Montoya (Williams-BMW)
4. R. Barrichello (Ferrari)
5. R. Schumacher (Williams-BMW)
6. T. Sato (BAR-Honda)
7. F. Alonso (Renault)
8. M. Webber (Jaguar-Cosworth)
9. C. Da Matta (Toyota)
10. D. Coulthard (McLaren-Mercedes)

12. F. Massa (Sauber-Petronas)
13. D. Melrose (Minardi-Cosworth)
14. O. Panis (Toyota)
15. C. Klien (Jaguar-Cosworth)
16. G. Pantano (Jordan-Ford)
17. N. Heidfeld (Jordan-Ford)
18. Z. Baumgartner (Minardi-Cosworth)
19. G. Fisichella (Sauber-Petronas)
20. K. Raikkonen (McLaren-Mercedes)

Race:

Jenson Button has been on almost Impeccable form this season as he took his second career win just under half a second ahead of Michael Schumacher. Schumacher spent most of the first stint fighting his teammate Barrichello, Daniel Melrose and Fernando Alonso. Infact Melrose put two very oppertunistic moves on Michael which may have cost him a chance at the victory as at one point he was nearly half a minute behind Button. Melrose also put an oppertunist move on Ralf Schumacher on his way to the final podium spot which didn't end well for the German as a result of the surprise behind the move made him jump over the kerb, damage the car and become the first retirement of the day. Championship leader Barrichello was also a high profile casualty when he speared off at Acqua Minerale while Takuma Sato was anonymous in 15th.

Results:
1. J. Button (BAR-Honda): 1h 27m 24.335s
2. M. Schumacher (Ferrari): +0.487
3. D. Melrose (Minardi-Cosworth): +25.107

Italian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Desperate to rebound after a poor performance at Spa, Davies spent practice deciding whether to go for downforce to get through the chicanes or speed for the straights. In the end, he decided on downforce (it kept spinning!), and his first two flyers in quali were 4 seconds off the pace. Changing his mind, his new low downforce setup immediately put him 7th, and then a banzai lap gave provisional pole, which a late lap from Mika Salo couldn't quite beat.

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 1:14.661
2nd: M. Salo (Ferrari): +0.105
3rd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +0.430
4th: D. Coulthard (McLaren): +0.459
5th: J. Herbert (Stewart): +0.766
6th: H. Frentzen (Jordan): +0.775
7th: D. Hill (Jordan): +o.784
8th: E. Irvine (Ferrari): +0.800
9th: R. Barrichello (Stewart): +0.974
10th: A. Zanardi (Williams): +1.111
11th: O. Panis (Prost): +1.534
12th: P. Diniz (Sauber): +1.583
13th: A. Wurz (Benetton): +1.691
14th: J. Alesi (Sauber): +1.759
15th: G. Fisichella (Benetton): +1.882
16th: J. Trulli (Prost): +2.294
17th: T. Takagi (Arrows): +3.402
18th: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +3.424
19th: M. Gene (Minardi): +3.829
20th: R. Zonta (BAR): +3.912
21st: L. Badoer (Minardi): +4.226
22nd: P. De la Rosa (Arrows): +4.701

Race:
Salo beat Davies off the line, but at the Rettifilo chicane Davies got the lead back. He held the lead (barely) going into the Parabolica, but the low downforce that he settled for struck and he ran wide, giving the lead to Salo. It didn’t matter, however, as Salo stopped, giving Davies the lead, with David Coulthard now right behind. The understeer struck again at the second Lesmo, meaning Coulthard got ahead and Frentzen now on his tail. When Coulthard stopped at the end of the lap, Davies once again had the lead, and since Frentzen stopped as well, Damon Hill was now the one trying to pass. But by taking the Rettifilo suicidally fast, Davies managed to have a 2 second lead when he pitted. An uncharacteristally quick stop saw him emerge ahead of Coulthard, still second thanks to most of the field except for Hill pitting behind him. He managed to catch Hill on lap 5, and tried to pass around the outside of the Curva Grande. Not the smartest decision he’d ever made… He made contact with Hill, sending them both spinning. Coulthard barely missed Hill, while Hakkinen wasn’t as lucky, collecting Davies, who had already started to drive off. This sent Hakkinen spinning, but Davies was just sliding, and able to continue, but still in second. He didn’t think his bosses would be complaining, because as a result Alex Zanardi was elevated onto the podium with one and a half laps remaining! Meanwhile, the oil flags were out on the run down to the Ascari chicane after Villeneuve’s engine went up in smoke. Davies unfortunately ran right through, losing control and allowing Zanardi into second, and very nearly letting Salo past as well. However, while they didn’t touch, Salo did run onto the grass, spinning and allowing Hakkinen into 4th. Davies had realised, after oversteering at the Parabolica, that he had suspension damage again, but didn’t pit since there was just one lap to go. Hakkinen caught quickly, and they made contact at the first Lesmo, with Hakkinen spinning and collecting Barrichello, while Davies was good to continue, with Pedro Diniz now in 4th place. Unfortunately, Diniz got past at the Parabolica, as Davies was crawling through, trying not to spin. However, he managed to stay well ahead of Fisichella to take 4th place, and more welcome points, as well as pole and fastest lap.

European Grand Prix

Qualifying:

It was a somewhat wet qualifying session to start with, but got wetter as it wore on, meaning that those who set early times were up the front. It was his final flyer that propelled Davies into the top 10 however, setting it in the final seconds on a drying track.

Race:
With the rain still beating down, Davies made a ripper of a start to be third by turn 1, then went three wide with Salo and Hakkinen into turn 1, coming out in the lead! He immediately pulled out a 6 second lead thanks to some sliding on Salo’s part. On lap 2, Eddie Irvine went out as engine went up in flames. Ferrari’s engine woes continued as smoke started to pour from Salo’s engine, while running in second place! It wasn’t terminal yet, he still could crawl around, but it did blow for good a few laps later. This gifted second to David Coulthard, after Hakkinen pitted. Davies stopped on lap 4, which was good since it got him out from behind Villeneuve, who was not being a gracious backmarker. He had a 16 second lead over Coulthard when he stopped, and emerged 13 seconds behind, still in second place, with Trulli third. When Coulthard stopped on lap 5, Davies took back his lead, with Trulli still second but yet to pit. The yellows came out at the hairpin after Zanardi spun into retirement. He caught Villeneuve at the final corner, and the Canadian let him past down the straight. Davies started the final lap in the lead, 19 seconds ahead of Trulli, although he had to pit, giving second to Coulthard. He lapped a few more cars, and took his second career win in his first season, and his first for Williams (plus fastest lap again).

Malaysian Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Michael Schumacher returned to his Ferrari after his “injury” at Britain, and immediately put it in a brilliant… second. He was beaten by Rhys Davies, who managed to take his third pole of his career.

22nd: J. Villeneuve (BAR): +5.894

Race:
A good start saw him hold his lead over Schumacher, and it was 6 seconds at the end of the lap, although that was over Hakkinen as Schumacher pitted. At the first corner, however, David Coulthard did his title hopes no good by taking out Damon Hill, with both retiring. There was ominous some news when Davies got a message that his engine was very hot. Frentzen went out on lap 2 with a broken suspension. Johnny Herbert inherited second when Hakkinen pitted, and then the lead when Davies stopped on the next lap. Davies emerged in second, just ahead of Zanardi, who had already stopped, and 17 seconds behind Herbert. Herbert stopped on lap 4, and both the Williams drivers passed him. Herbert emerged third, after Schumacher and Hakkinen collided a few times. On the final lap, Davies held a 13 second lead of Zanardi, and held it to take his third win, and his first from pole. Zanardi took second to complete the Williams 1-2, and Johnny Herbert took the bottom step of the podium.

A question for Mr Davies:

Rumour has it that you will either be driving alongside Ralf Schumacher at Williams next year or will join Sammy Jones at Jaguar next year. Can you confirm any details?

Rhys Davies wrote:Well, I haven't had any offers for next season, but if Williams do wish to retain my services, then I will join them. However, I understand that they are looking to bring back Schumacher, as well as a new driver. Should I not get an offer from Williams, then I might go to Jaguar. It depends on who offers me a spot.

Japanese Grand Prix

Qualifying:

Davies put in another brilliant lap to take yet another pole position. David Coulthard needs to win to even have a shot at the championship, and with Hakkinen starting just ahead of him, it could be a difficult task. The two Minardis were both outside 107%, but were allowed to start.

1st: R. Davies (Williams): 1:29.462
2nd: M. Hakkinen (McLaren): +1.649

21st: M. Gene (Minardi): +6.290
22nd: L. Badoer (Minardi): +7.417

Race:
A rather poor start saw Davies go into the first corner side by side with Hakkinen, and predictably they collided, with Davies spinning, but managing to stay 6th, between the Jordans. He passed Frentzen for 5th at the hairpin, but ran wide at the Spoon and gave the spot back. When Barrichello and Frentzen pitted, this gave Davies 4th, now behind Irvine, who he passed at the first corner. Up front, Coulthard led, but with Hakkinen second, he wouldn’t be winning the championship. Davies caught up to the McLarens at the Spoon, and passed Hakkinen at the Casio Triangle, inheriting the lead when Coulthard pitted. Another mistake at the Spoon saw Hakkinen get up the inside down the straight, but as they went through 130R, Hakkinen got slightly ahead, moved over, and just touched Davies, spinning off and into retirement. Davies continued, and had to pit at the end of the lap anyway, rejoining in 4th place, behind Coulthard. Both of them were jumped in the pits by Hill and Schumacher. At the start of the last lap, the top 4 were all within two seconds of each other, and Coulthard was pushing hard for the win. However, his championship hopes ended when he spun at the hairpin, handing Davies the final podium spot. And then, at the Casio Triangle, Schumacher made a move for the lead, but collected Hill, spinning himself and knocking Hill wide, allowing Davies to get side by side with the Jordan down the straight, and edging him out for another win!

And so Rhys Davies finishes the 1999 season in a respectable 3rd place, higher than he thought he would ever be, especially considering his rather poor first half of the year. For next season, he had offers to stick with Williams, with their new partnership with BMW hopefully making them even more competitive, McLaren, who had forgiven him for the Hakkinen crash, or to go crawling back to Benetton. Not a chance! In the end, considering his choices, he decided to stay with Williams for the 2000 Formula One season.

2004: Round 5: Spain:

Qualifying:

Michael Schumacher reached a new level at Barcelona when he went over 7 tenths faster than anyone else to score pole position ahead of Takuma Sato and Juan Pablo Montoya. Both McLarens were remotely competitive in qualifying for once yet both were still outqualified by the Minardi of Daniel Melrose as he pulled out a simply scorching qualifying lap to qualify 9th. Nick Heidfeld did a commendable job to be just 3 seconds away from pole in 17th leaving teammate Pantano for dead in 19th who was 4 seconds slower than Massa in 18th. Button disappointed greatly as he was stranded in 15th.

Grid:
1. M. Schumacher (Ferrari)
2. T. Sato (BAR-Honda)
3. J. Pablo Montoya (Williams-BMW)
4. R. Barrichello (Ferrari)
5. R. Schumacher (Williams-BMW)
6. J. Trulli (Renault)
7. O. Panis (Toyota)
8. F. Alonso (Renault)
9. D. Melrose (Minardi-Cosworth)
10. M. Webber (Jaguar-Cosworth)
11. D. Coulthard (McLaren-Mercedes)
12. C. Da Matta (Toyota)
13. K. Raikkonen (McLaren-Mercedes)
14. G. Fisichella (Sauber-Petronas)
15. J. Button (BAR-Honda)
16. C. Klien (Jaguar-Cosworth)
17. N. Heidfeld (Jordan-Ford)
18. F. Massa (Sauber-Petronas)
19. G. Pantano (Jordan-Ford)
20. Z. Baumgartner (Minardi-Cosworth)

Race:

Only 3 drivers in the entire field broke into the 1:18s during the race so it was no surprise those 3 took out the 3 podium results. What was surprising however was Daniel Melrose was simply in stellar form all weekend as another oppertunist start got him up to 4th by the end of lap 1. However he ended up spending 17 laps behind the BAR of Takuma Sato which many pundits thought would have ruined his 3 stop strategy against everyone elses's "half-three quarter" plan.

Amazingly despite being held up by Sato, Melrose still ended up ahead of the Williams simply because they were holding up the rest of the field at the rate of 2 seconds a lap compared to the trio in 3rd, 4th and 5th. Once Melrose emerged everyone at the track were treated to quite simply the best 11 lap display in history. At this point Michael Schumacher had set the fastest lap and thus the lap record at a 1:19.9. Within 2 flying laps Melrose had smashed that by a second and within 7 laps he had caught Sato again who was now down to 4th after Trulli found a way past. On lap 27 Melrose made an ambitious move down the inside of Sato heading into turn 3 and by his second stop had emerged a dozen or so seconds behind Barrichello who had also stopped by that point.

Unfortuantly Melrose came within 7 seconds of race leader Michael Schumacher and of potentially pulling off one of the biggest upsets in Formula One history (whether he could have remained ahead of the Ferraris after their final stop is debatable) when on lap 49 he got a brake problem warning which meant he lost 3 seconds during sector 3 of that lap plus another 7 seconds during the resulting pitstop relative to a normal 3 stop time since Melrose was due to pit the next lap anyway. By the time Barrichello had pitted 5 laps later Melrose had made up 9 seconds of the 11 second gap he had before which wasn't enough for the Australian which relegated him to 3rd behind Schumacher who had lowered the fastest lap by another half a second and Rubens Barrichello.

Trulli finished 4th while Sato was the last of the runners on the lead lap in 5th. Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button were locked in battle for most of the race with the Spaniad emerging ahead while Giancarlo Fisichella picked up the final point in 8th when Ralf Schumacher retired with a few laps to go. Overall it was a miserable day for Williams as Montoya did nothing to end up 13th. McLaren were also awful to a similar degree with Coulthard 10th and Raikkonen 12th.
