Bathurst Qualifying quotes:

Mattias Kjellerup wrote:I'm very happy with our qualifying performance today. Nick and Alessandro have done a great job putting an untested car so high up the grid. Especially considering this is their first ARWS race on this highly challenging track.

Jean-Marc Hadamard wrote:I was a bit nervous about this session. After months of development, the chassis finally made its debut. The car was completely untested, we finished the cars on Thursday. Considering it was such a rushed debut, we did really well. This car has potential. Now I hope we make it to the finish again on Sunday.

Kazuki Fushida wrote:I was a bit closer to my teammate today, but I still need to improve if we want to have a chance to qualify for a race. Driving at Bathurst is fun, it's a challenging track, but unfortunately our weekend is over after pre-qualifying again.

Guillaume Gauthier wrote:I won't mince words here, this is a disappointment for sure. I am hoping that once again we will show better pace in the race, but regardless, we are looking forward to returning to Europe, where we can then focus on applying what we have learned in Australia.

I am also quite incensed with the time allotments for qualifying here - we had a call to the weighbridge on Bastiaan's car in the first session, which disrupted our preparations to send him out, and by the time he got back, we could not send him out in time to qualify the car, which was a great shame.

This means on 21-24 March there will be a test at Sentul again, with Bean and Fushida driving. First two days for car development, second one for driver development.

Also, currently how long the PQ session runs at this time, given the calls to make it longer? :?

Normally it's 15 minutes. At +5km tracks, like Bathurst, 5 minutes are added; and if rain, another 5 minutes are added.

J.O.U.R.N.A.L. wrote:Effendi: 15 minutes not enough for PQ

As pre-qualifying teams started to voice their concerns regarding the very short time for pre-qualifying preventing some cars from setting a time in Adelaide and Bathurst, the team principal of the prequalifying mainstay Team Mecha Racing, Mahmud Effendi, stated that he is in favor of extending pre-qualifying time.

"15 minutes is not enough; 20 on long tracks is still insufficient. 30 minutes should be the standard. With restrictive time comes little time to prepare cars, and some teams are erroneously sending their drivers so late. In fact, we admit we sent [John] Bean's car underprepared in NSW as we ran out time to prepare his car, hence his oil leak." stated Effendi to J.O.U.R.N.A.L.

The team is scheduled to test their cars and drivers again after yet another letdown in Bathurst, although both cars were able to set time. "But we are still off the pace despite the improved machinery - hence the re-testing."

Shane was on the pace, like in Adelaide, and he showed that we definitely have what it takes to make the main qualifying session at the very least. The problem is that Aurelien simply can't set a lap time. We've identified the problem to be his race engineer, Manfred. He has been fired from the team, and we hope this will allow him to actually set times. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to have longer sessions, 30 minutes, for example...

Star Sports wrote:Bean bemused with Mecha GP development plans?

Speculation has arisen about John Bean's contentment with his new employers Mecha, according to a source that is reputedly close to the British driver.

Bean is apparently confused at the team's development direction with their newly acquired chassis, one which traces its roots back to the works Holden chassis from two years ago.

"He says they haven't the slightest idea what they're doing," said the confidant. "Apparently they don't even understand what's wrong with the car, and thus are wasting time going down avenues that won't bring solutions."

Bean has apparently urged his team to seek outside assistance to help with the problems, saying that the greater experience held by other teams and drivers could be used to good effect.

"He wants them to try and bank on an experienced ARWS driver for help in improving the car," the source continued. "Fushida is hopeless and shouldn't be let anywhere near the development process. He couldn't tell the difference between his elbow and his arse, never mind the intricacies of single seater car development."

"If Mecha GP bothered to ask around experienced ARWS drivers for some input, I'm sure some would be happy to participate in testing. But they don't bother to look around, instead depending on their own useless in house drivers like Fushida and Anderson."

The source said Bean had a clear development plan in mind for the car, but his team won't consult him on his opinion on how to best move forward.

"Despite being a debutant in the series, this is not his first time in the top flight of motor racing, and has been asked to lead the team," the anonymous source continued. "He was signed on as team leader, and yet Mecha have not given him the opportunity to exercise the responsibilities that come with such a position."

When pressed for the specifics of Bean's expectations, the source claimed his focus was on finding more downforce and reliability from the chassis, and expected a veteran ARWS specialist to lead development alongside Bean himself.

Mecha GP have a long history of being stuck at the rear of the field, and since their inception at the start of 2014, have only escaped Pre-Qualifying 20 times in 68 races to date, recording a solitary completed race distance, with Steven Mackintosh coming 9th at the 2015 Monaco Grand Prix, along with two other classified results where cars reached over 90% of race distance before retiring.

Jimenez, the Tropican paydriver had been out of the sport for a year and was picked up by the PAE team after they bought out Aeroracing and had to scramble to find drivers.

It is understood that the team came under increasing pressure from sponsors and no 1 driver Ashley Watkinson to get rid of Jimenez as they felt that he was dragging the team down.

The owners of PAE (Edward Summers and Philip Neumann) declined to make comment on the sacking. It is expected that one of the team's test drivers will be promoted to the race seat.

Disappointed Neuberg remains upbeat
German PORE driver David Neuberg failed to qualify for the Bathurst GP today, setting a time a couple of tenths slower than his own teammate. PORE will now drop into pre-qualifying and based on current pace, may struggle to get back out.
"Not good really, is it?" bemoaned an obviously frustrated Neuberg. The German whizzkid was seen as being a potential World Champion in the future, even driving for the famous MRT team a few years back and scoring several podiums to date, however, his stock is slowly falling as he continues to remain loyal to his current employers. "We tried to find a nice balance but it just didn't work out. In fact, we went further behind after practice."

Mr.Alexander has already stated that this has to be a make-or-break season for PORE if they are to keep hold of David. "I've said it before, but David needs to find himself moving towards to front of the grid as soon as he can. The team made steady progress under the Kingfisher banner but it seems the PORE movement has gone sideways. I know it's not up to me as to how the team is run, but I have a driver on my books who is beginning to get itchy feet. Hopefully, an improvement is close."

The left rear wheel fell off on my outlap in Q1 because the nuts weren't done up correctly. Luckily I got a reasonable time in Q2 to get the car into the race, but really, these types of mistake must stop before we can even think about making progress competitively.

We must face facts. Right now, our technical package is not good. My best hope is to run a clean race and go to the end, and hope with attrition that results in a point, much in the way that Pascal came 6th in the last race.

Rejectsport wrote:JJD: "Nicolas must improve"
Former F1 World champion James James Davies has said that, despite winning the opening Grand Prix of the 2018 ARWS season, Phillippe Nicolas cannot afford to maintain his current level of performance relative to his sophomore teammate Alberto Cara.

"When you are qualifying half a second to three-quarters of a second off of your teammate, this is not something you can ever afford to be a regular occurrence," the Brit continued, "He might be the most experienced driver at the front of the grid, between MRT and Fusion, but you don't win title just by being consistent and waiting for people to fall off the road. You have to have the pace to mix it with those drivers, at least on occasions, and I'm just not seeing that kind of pace out of Nicolas."

Davies went on to be very complimentary of Alberto Cara, whose performances last year for Holden impressed enough to warrant a position with the current pace-setting MRT squad.

"You have to be impressed with what Cara's accomplished, though. The guy looked so horribly inconsistent in F2, yet when it's come to it, he's always right up there. 2 comfortable pole positions mean he's really the guy to beat in terms of single-lap pace, and as he gets more used to running at the front here, he'll be more and more potent as the season wears on. Nicolas must improve if he doesn't want to see this early lead evaporate."

"While the effort has been solid, and the KS-01 is quite a good package, I'm a little bit dissatisfied with Shinjo's race pace on Bathurst. After qualifiying just a place below his more experienced teammate, we expected him to match Kekkonen and getting both cars running in tandem, but he just went wrong with the start and the strategy. He needs to improve, and fast, as there are other drivers that wants a competitive ride."

At the moment of this interview, USD haven't decided to stay on Mount Panorama or return to Austria for tests.

As other teams bring up the issue regarding ARWS's Pre-Qualifying and QUalifying sessions lasting 15 minutes, Blokkmonsta Grand Prix's Team Owner Andrea Schnass added to the calls for a change to the qualifying system. "We may have escaped qualifying in the first two races, but we feel a bit cheated since four teams couldn't even get their cars out to post times in the fifteen minutes the stewards give us. We agree with Gillet and Mecha and will file a report to the ARWS management to extend the time of qualifying and pre-quali."

Of the five new teams, Teams Kjellerup and Blokkmonsta both made it to the main race in both rounds so far. Schnass made no comment on his team's unreliability seen at Bathurst last weekend, where both Blokkmonsta cars retired in the first ten laps. L'Equipe wrote:'Reliability must improve' - Voeckler

Another day, another retirement at Voeckler GPE. Dan Greenlaw got the works Renault team's first points on the board for the season with his debut podium finish, but world champion Thomas De Bock notched up another retirement, this time with a transmission failure similar to the one that blighted Greenlaw in Adelaide.

"Our key rivals have made unforced errors, and unreliability on our part has stopped us from capitalising," said team principal Jeremy-Etienne Voeckler. "It's unacceptable. We cannot fight for the championship if that car cannot reach the end of the race. MRT are streaking away at the front, not on raw pace but simply because they have made no mistakes. We are capable of beating them, but reliability must improve greatly to do so."

ARWS rookie Dan Greenlaw turned in another good performance, rocketing from the last row of the grid to finish on the podium at Bathurst, and his team principal was quick to praise the American driver.

"Greenlaw has been the most impressive driver this year, without a doubt," he said. "We let him down, and other drivers let him down in quali. His gearbox was broken and we couldn't send him out in time in Q1, and then cars blocked him continuously during the second session. Without those unfortunate events, I'm sure Dan would have qualified near the front and finished on the top step."

"He was determined and unflappable today. An incisive, measured drive of a champion. He was easily the best driver at Adelaide, and has delivered again in great fashion today at Bathurst. Hawkin is fast but not coping with the pressure well, whereas Dan has been incredibly impressive with his level-headed approach. He has laid down a marker now, and Thomas must now respond to this challenge."

Gazzetta dello Sport wrote:No surprises from Bizzarri & Lucarelli

In the mad scenarios of ARWS, there are often wild and unexpected results forthcoming. Aside from more woe for Jones, and an error-strewn performance from Terry Hawkin, there was surprisingly few talking points after Bathurst, especially from two of the Italian contingent at the race.

There were high hopes for Alessandro Lucarelli, who had placed his new Kjellerup car in 5th place for the race, on the same row as team-mate Nick Nurmester. However, both capitulated their excellent grid slots, tumbling down the order, and ending with Lucarelli down in 10th place, several seconds behind Nurmester in 9th.

"The car has promise, this is very clear," said the Parmigiani pilot, "Our race pace is not good. At first I was afraid it was just me struggling, but it seems also Nick [Nurmester] is having similar problems with consistency."

Marco Bizzarri meanwhile, who oddly enough was piloting the same car Lucarelli had used at Adelaide, despite racing for a rival team in the form of Revolution, had a similarly quiet race. Il Toro was anything but raging, instead quietly dispatching fellow tailend runners to move up from 21st to 14th, just behind team-mate Andrej Kremnicky.

"We had hoped the new car would bring improvement, and while I certainly feel more confident at the wheel with this new car, it hasn't quite bedded in yet," he explained. "We must continue working to acclimatise to this new chassis and exploit its potential. I don't think this track suited our characteristics anyway, but I think we can make forward steps in the coming races."

De Telegraaf wrote:'Technical gains required' - van Nieuwenhuijzen

Gauthier driver Bastiaan van Nieuwenhuijzen had a much more quiet race than his ARWS debut at Adelaide, where instead of fighting for podium places, he was forced to make do with finishing just outside the points, ceding 6th place late in the race to Terry Hawkin.

"We have potential, this is certain," he said. "The baseline is good. But we are missing a little bit of optimisation. It also doesn't help that the Fusions and Voecklers have more grunt than us from their engines."

"When Terry Hawkin caught me near the end, there was nothing I could do," he continued. "His car is too fast. Probably the fastest on the grid. I'm disappointed in general not to be in the points, but all the cars ahead of us today were there on merit. It would have taken higher attrition to score points today."

The Dutchman was still positive however, citing car improvements coming before the next round at Monza.

"We are doing a big test in a couple of weeks in France," he explained. "The team is working tirelessly on improving the car, and also I will get a bit of time dedicated to working on my wheelwork, which is nice of the team. The hope is these improvements will get us back into the mix for podiums again."

Bastiaan did well to get as much out of the race as he did, and with our upcoming test we anticipate that he well be more accustomed to ARWS machinery, and be able to maintain his current form.

Danny's race was a major disappointment however. I am not certain exactly what causing his lack of pace, but it looks like his car suffered some sort of damage in his early incident which prevented him from making any sort of comeback.

Rejectsport wrote:JJD: New generation of ARWS drivers could be "fastest ever"

Following the close of the opening Australian leg of the ARWS championship, James James Davies has commentated that this year's rookie class could very quickly make other top drivers obsolete.

"We're only 2 races into the careers of some of these drivers, and they already look like potential drivers," the Brit mentioned in his BBC pundit duties, "If Hawkin could stop making errors, he could be right up there with the MRT drivers in the championship. Greenlaw and van Nieuwenhuijzen have put their teammates to shame in these first two races and done as well as I think those cars are capable of."

"Then when you count Cara who's been consistently quick beyond anyone's expectations, Miccoli who's been super quick in F1, and Kazama who could be right up with these drivers if she'd stop being a drama queen... you start realising, there's not many places left for the likes of Nicolas, de Bock, Mestolio... even Dagnall. This generation of rookies is the most prepared of any to date, and they look like they'll be the fastest ever. It's not like this is it for top prospects, either, there's a ton of really talented drivers in this year's AR3.5 field - Mineiro, Gauthier, Vosu, Cameron... and probably a ton more. If I was one of these veterans in ARWS - or F1 for that matter - I'd start getting a little nervous with this influx of new talent coming in."

Alessandro and Nick did a good job trying to defend, but we have to hope for attrition to score points until we manage to fix our tyre wear problems. Hopefully the upcoming test will help us find some more grip, but the other top teams are developing too, so I expect us to remain in the upper midfield for now.

ar-update.net wrote:How safe is Fushida?
Mecha's move to sign 57-year old Kazuki Fushida has been one of the major surprises of this year's silly season. But so far, the Japanese former F1 driver has failed to impress in pre-qualifying, with a pace over one second down on the rest of the field. However, few drivers have as much experience as Fushia, which could help Mecha developing their still uncompetetive chassis. In any case, Fushida needs to prove himself in the upcoming test sessions and races, as Mecha have already indicated they might replace Fushida with their reserve driver, Dave Anderson. However, Fushida maintains he has a contract for the full 2018 season.

Kingfisher in trouble?
After a turbulent off-season, Plus One Kingfisher Racing has struggled at the start of the 2018 season, with a 19th place by Quentin Reatherson as their best result yet. The team has dropped into pre-qualifying for Monza, where they are unlikely to pre-qualify due to the underpowered Great Wall engine. Their good championship position in 2017, when they finished 10th with 3 points scored, makes finding pay-driver money very difficult for the team, due to the unique paydriver limitations in AutoReject World Series. Combined with the lack of performance from the current car, this means that their financial problems will likely persist for the forseeable future.

De Bock disappointed yet in high spirits; impressed by Greenlaw

Following a second retirement in as many races this season, defending ARWS champion Thomas De Bock was understandably disappointed after the New South Wales Grand Prix, in which he retired with a transmission failure. However, much like in Adelaide, he was able to demonstrate good pace, steadily rising through the ranks from a lowly qualifying position until his early retirement. "I know I am still capable of points, podiums and wins if I can finish. Fighting for the title will be difficult, with MRT and Fusion as fast as they are, but it's a challenge I'm willing to take."

One of his biggest opponents, though, might well be his own teammate. American rookie Dan Greenlaw has been mightily impressive so far this season, outpacing De Bock in qualifying in Adelaide, where he could have won without a mechanical failure, and finishing third in Bathurst after starting 25th and passing most of the field in tandem with De Bock. "For sure, Dan is an amazing talent. He is undoubtedly the best teammate I've ever had. I'd teach him some tricks, but he seems to know them all already! We get along well, and he has my full support for this season and his future career, definitely."

Autosport wrote:Jones laments another poor performance

Sammy Jones has told reporters following the Bathurst round of the ARWS that he is frustrated with his team's current performances, but is confident they can turn things around.

"Yes, everyone is raving about MRT and Fusion" said Jones, "but the reality of it all is this - Voeckler have had a f***ing godawful start to the year too - I mean look at De Bock, he can't even finish his dinner at the moment, let alone a race distance. So we're not alone in being slow out of the blocks. We have time, and budget, to turn things around, and we've been unfortunate that the tracks at the start of the season aren't really favouring the car. I have every faith, with Mark back in the car for the next race, that we can get back on track."

"Our performances so far have simply not been good enough. It's massively frustrating, particularly after the results we've enjoyed over the past two seasons. But we can fix our problems and we will be back at the front in no time at all."

Hawkin rues over-exuberance

After missing out on a potential podium at Bathurst, Terry Hawkin says he regrets "trying too hard" and has since apologised to his Fusion team for his errors.

"I'm massively disappointed, it was a great chance and I ballsed it up, no two ways about it. But the season is young, we'll have plenty more chances, and to be honest our pace has caught everyone off guard anyway, so that alone is something that we can be proud of at this stage. For me, I'll just take each race as it comes, grow into the car and understand it better and see what happens. Long way to go yet."

After a suspension failure at Bathurst, Diego Alvarez Torrente has claimed that "bad luck" stood in the way of him and a first points finish of the season.

Torrente looked on to continue his good form at the Australian circuit, but a suspension failure put paid to those chances as the Jones driver was running in 4th place.

"It's just bad luck that this has happened" said Torrente after the race. "This has become a favourite circuit of mine after last season and I thought we might've done alright here...we were pretty quick on the top part of the circuit where grip and handling is key."

Torrente also commented on seeing his team boss Sammy Jones return to the grid as a short-notice replacement for the suspended Mark Dagnall.

"I had to show Boss the ropes of the car, I wasn't sure if he'd actually driven one of them since 2015!" he said. "Luckily, he worked out what he was doing pretty quickly, because it was a pretty awkward situation!"

Couteau - "Fantastic to score first ARWS points"

Fusion principal Jacques Couteau has hailed his Fusion team for scoring their first points in ARWS, and has encouraged his charges to kick on with the rest of the season.

Drivers Fredo Mestolio and Terry Hawkin finished 4th and 6th respectively to help Fusion take a double-points finish, although Hawkin was in podium contention with a late spin.

"We are delighted with the result, and it's fantastic for us to get our first points in this series" said Couteau. "Yes, Terry had a late spin, but he's young and he's learning. We know that he's very quick and for sure he'll be a success with us. Today, we made our first steps into the big league."

"But the work doesn't stop here. We have to continue on, keep testing, developing, all of these things. We can't stand back and admire our field when the seed is planted, but when the crop is grown and ready to reap."

Tuttosport wrote:ADV: Aeroracing will be dead by end of the season

Former Scuderia Alitalia management guru Antonio Della Valle, now a racing a pundit for national broadcaster Rai, has slammed the new management of Aeroracing Engineering, and predicting the team will fall to its knees by the year's end.

"These people, they are stupid, not even two brain cells to rub together in hope of a magic spark of intellect," said the controversial opinionator. "I can't believe their choices. OK, they have fired Jimenez already, at least, but it was boneheaded to hire him in the first place. And then I got a look at their testing manifest for Donnington..."

"I can only hope the fact the test is scheduled for April 1 means their development choices are an April Fools' Joke. Otherwise, this team is rudderless, run by a drunkard or the team principal is always asleep. I don't know. But whoever he is, he is not right in the head."

The shocking comments from the blunt former team manager are in stark contrast to the fortunes of the Aeroracing team only a year ago, where Alexey Buyvolov looked to have catapulted them into contention for both world championships.

"I don't know how they do this. Is it a magic trick? Are they ripping the team apart on purpose? It must be one of these, as I didn't realise it was possible to dismantle a competitive team as quickly as this. The new management have taken a very promising racing team and quickly turned it into a joke. Years of hard work by the former Spanish owners has been completely undone in the space of 3 months."

"Peak Aeroracing will be dead by the end of the year. Every decision they make is devoid of sense. They are the most incompetent racing team management in the history of our sport. They have taken a large organisation with hundreds of employees, and are about to end up making them all redundant through sheer stupidity."

Turning his attentions to more short term concerns, Della Valle indicated the pain was about to go up a notch from Monza onwards for the part British, part New Zealand team.

"They were unbelievably lucky at Bathurst. Three teams who would have been faster than them in Pre-Qualifying didn't get both cars to run, and gave Peak Aeroracing an open goal. Ashley Watkinson with his 9th and 11th places is done for the season now. Him, and Martins will need miracles to escape the dungeon of Pre-Quali. They won't do better for the rest of the year.

Speedweek wrote:Shinjo already on the chopping block?

Rumours in Austria are circulating that ARWS newcomer Naoki Shinjo is already on his toes in regards to his immediate future, with sources suggesting he is only one sub-par performance away from being replaced.

The Japanese driver, who has previously raced in junior categories in his homeland, along with the former F3RWRS series, has failed to match his more experienced team-mate Jari Kekkonen over a race distance in either testing or races. Despite his experience, Kekkonen is widely considered as a stop-gap solution, given the last minute nature of his appointment, and so for a rookie not to be able to reach his level quickly has caused alarm bells to ring.

A number of drivers frustrated with situations at their current teams have been linked to Shinjo's seat. Former ArrowTech driver Hansuke Shioya, reputedly unhappy with life at the struggling Rob Lomas Racing squad, has been linked to the seat, along with fellow DGN management client Jesus Plaza, who is currently a test and reserve for fellow ARWS newcomers Venturi. Also linked to USD are two Brits - current Aeroracing lead driver Ashley Watkinson is said to be trying to engineer a move to the team, while team principal Karl Lichter Shulz is said to be an admirer of Nathanael Spencer, the 2011 series champion who is currently a reserve for Voeckler GPE.

Rejectsport wrote:MS: Don't count Aeroracing out
The response from Antonio Della Valle saying that Aeroracing will be dead by the end of the season has started to spilt the ARWS paddock with Matthew Saoea weighing into the debate.

"Counting out a team to not make the season after two races is an overestimate. We still have 16 rounds to go left in the championship, so anything can happen in those races. Basically you shouldn't count them out as that might be the biggest mistake you will make."

In more Tassie Racing, they become the first team to switch tyre supplies with the team now going to standard tyres from Monza onwards in hope of better fortune for the next race at Monza.

James James Davies wrote:Saoea is ridiculous. This guy comes in, buys an absolute boat of a car, ties it to the worst value engine in ARWS, and thinks he can weigh in on a discussion about the merits of a fellow team boss? Ridiculous. I think he spent too much money on vowels for his surname and not enough on the actual team. Antonio Della Vallae has years of experience in this sport, he knows what he's talking about, and I agree with him - Peak Aeroracing's strategy so far for this season only makes sense if you picture it as them cannibalising the team for their raw resources. As it is, they couldn't have plummeted faster down the grid if they threw all their machinery out the window. It's quite astounding, really.

BlokkmonstaRacing.de wrote: April 1-April 4 Testing: Working with MRT

With ARWS returning to Europe for the next couple of races we will again return to the Nurburgring for testing. From April 1st to April 4th Blokkmonsta GP will run the GP circuit in coordination with Melrose Racing Team (MRT).

Our main goals for these tests will be to improve the car's qualifying pace, and we will do so through further improvement of the car's lack of downforce. Nicolas Steele will also get some time to improve his driving skills, since he qualified near the back end of the grid at both races so far. Facing the MRTs during our stay will certainly help us with simulating race scenarios as well as act as a yardstick we can compare ourselves to as well.

With that, here is Blokkmonsta's testing schedule for April 1st to April 4th at the Nurburgring GP Circuit:

Day 1- Downforce- Nicolas Steele
Day 2- Downforce- Nicolas Steele
Day 3- Reliability- Nicolas Steele
Day 4- Reliability- Wouter Lamberigts and Nicolas Steele
