Apertura 2011

Post by ADx_Wales »

Apertura is spanish for Opening Term

Mostly used in Argentina to start their Top-Flight footballsoccer championship.

And from the creator of the 2010 end of season playoff format. I present the 2011 Apertura.

A basic 16 driver knockout format consisting of the highest points finishers of the previous season:

Drivers eligible for the 2011 Apertura:

-Vettel (2010 season champion)
- Alonso
- Webber
- Hamilton
- Button
- Massa
- Rosberg
- Kubica ( out injured)
- Schumacher
- Barrichello
- Sutil
- Kobayashi
- Petrov
- Hulkenberg (out of race seat)
- Liuzzi
- Buemi
- De la Rosa (out of race seat
- Heidfeld
- Alguersuari

(Only drivers with a guaranteed race seat can therefore take part in the round of 16)

I will make a seperate page for each round but here is the basic look at who will be looking to beat who in Melbourne:

Vettel v Alguersuari

Alonso v Heidfeld

Webber v Buemi

Hamilton v Liuzzi

Button v Petrov

Massa v Kobayashi

Rosberg v Sutil

Schumacher v Barrichello.

Please withold your predictions for the ''Apertura 2011 Round of 16'' page which will be due in several hours time.

Anyone prepared to recreate previous years in this format remember.

Highest points finishers of the previous season.

If there are less than 16 points finishers then the remaining slots should be filled by the fastest qualifying on the saturday of the first round.

EDIT: ...if anyone saw those two posts I deleted, I may well have bathplugged up the structure of the competition.

ADx_Wales, can you confirm which way this works?

(1) The winner of Vettel v Alguersuari plays the winner of Alonso v Heidfeld; the winner of Webber v Buemi plays the winner of Hamilton v Liuzzi, etc...

or is it...

(2) The winner of Vettel v Alguersuari plays the winner of Schumacher v Barrichello; the winner of Alonso v Heidfeld plays the winner of Rosberg v Sutil, etc...

or is it...

(3) a true seeding system, which needs a grid like this? (In order: 1,8,4,5,6,3,7,2)

Code: Select all

Vettel (1)
Alguersuari (16)
                   ---QF 1---
Schumacher (8)
Barrichello (9)
                               ---SF 2---
Hamilton (4)
Liuzzi (13)
                   ---QF 2---
Button (5)
Petrov (12)
                                           ---FINAL---
Massa (6)
Kobayashi (11)
                   ---QF 3---
Webber (3)
Buemi (14)
                               ---SF 2---
Rosberg (7)
Sutil (10)
                   ---QF 4---
Alonso (2)
Heidfeld (15)

That way, 1st and 2nd seeds cannot meet until the final, 1st and 4rd / 2nd and 3rd until the semis, etc. But there's always a chance that those seeds in the top 8 can be knocked out with a bad result...

Anyway, I will reprogram what I worked out for the 2010 and 2009 Aperturi using this seeding system, and see what happens....

EDIT AGAIN: ...I think system 3 may be exactly the same as 2! Hang on while I work out 2009 as well...

or
(4) best of those who continue vs worst

Let's say, the winners from round 1 are:
Vettel (1)
Schumacher (8)
Hamilton (4)
Petrov (12)
Kobayashi (11)
Webber (3)
Sutil (10)
Alonso (2)

Pairs in round 2 would be
Vettel - Petrov
Alonso - Kobayashi
Webber - Sutil
Hamilton - Schumacher

And according to 2009 as well, systems 2 and 3 are the same. Couldn't see the carbon fibre for all the F1 cars.

I suppose there's a system 5 (or should that be 4, now?) as well - the FA Cup system, with a random draw for each round...

However, I reckon the seeding system is the one that should be used. What say you, ADx_Wales?

Sorry for the delay,

Dinizintheoven, your "seeded" structure or (3) as you put it in the display box is exactly how this competition would be formatted, apologies for that lack of detail, had the idea whilst in work and had to put the basics in.

Yes, 1st plays 16th, 2nd plays 15th and 3rd plays 14th...etc. so what should happen is 1st meets 2nd in the final, but as we all know it doesnt or SHOULDNT end that way come round 4 of the season.

Something has come up and will post the "Apertura 2011 Round of 16" at around 11.30pm GMT tonight.

I'm looking at doing for every season, so all I'm asking is:

Is the final race actually the fourth of the championship?

Wunderbar. It's a good job this isn't on a Ferrari forum - it would be ablaze with the sound of hatred for the 2010 champion, and let's not forget Timo Glock started 2009 as every biased Ferraristi's second least favourite driver...

Timo is probably sitting in the Virgin garage wondering how it could all have gone wrong after 2009, as he waits to start the race from 21st on the grid...

Anyway, now that there's no confusion with the way it all works, how about I go on and provide APERTURA 2008 - and there's no need to do it with the code, now that I know what I'm doing.

Seedings:
(1) K. Räikkönen
(2) L. Hamilton
(3) F. Alonso
(4) F. Massa
(5) N. Heidfeld
(6) R. Kubica
(7) H. Kovalainen
(8) G. Fisichella
(9) N. Rosberg
(10) D. Coulthard
(NA) A. Wurz - retired
(11) M. Webber
(12) J. Trulli
(13) S. Vettel
(14) J. Button
(NA) R. Schumacher - departed for a mediocre career in DTM
(15) T. Sato - made it to the first four races of 2008
(NA) V. Liuzzi - dropped at the end of the 2007 season
(16) A. Sutil

FIRST ROUND - AUSTRALIA
Heat 1 (1 v 16): (1) Räikkönen (8th) v (16) Sutil (DNF)
Heat 2 (2 v 15): (2) Hamilton (1st) v (15) Sato (DNF)
Heat 3 (3 v 14): (3) Alonso (4th) v (14) Button (DNF)
Heat 4 (4 v 13): (4) Massa (DNF, 29 laps) v (13) Vettel (DNF, 0 laps)
Heat 5 (5 v 12): (5) Heidfeld (2nd) v (12) Trulli (DNF)
Heat 6 (6 v 11): (6) Kubica (DNF, 47 laps) v (11) Webber (DNF, 0 laps)
Heat 7 (7 v 10): (7) Kovalainen (5th) v (10) Coulthard (DNF)
Heat 8 (8 v 9): (8) Fisichella (DNF) v (9) Rosberg (3rd)

QUARTER FINALS - MALAYSIA
QF 1 (H1 v H8): Räikkönen (1st) v Rosberg (14th)
QF 2 (H2 v H7): Hamilton (5th) v Kovalainen (3rd)
QF 3 (H3 v H6): Alonso (8th) v Kubica (2nd)
QF 4 (H4 v H5): Massa (DNF) v Heidfeld (6th)

SEMI FINALS - BAHRAIN
SF 1 (QF1 v QF4): Räikkönen (2nd) v Heidfeld (4th)
SF 2 (QF2 v QF3): Kovalainen (5th) v Kubica (3rd)

FINAL - SPAIN
Räikkönen (1st) v Kubica (4th)

...hey, I'm enjoying this. Tell you what... two more coming before I knock off for the day!

APERTURA 2007

Seedings:
(1) F. Alonso
(NA) M. Schumacher - retired (for a while, at least)
(2) F. Massa
(3) G. Fisichella
(4) K. Räikkönen
(5) J. Button
(6) R. Barrichello
(NA) J.P. Montoya - gone off to have a sulk
(7) N. Heidfeld
(8) R. Schumacher
(NA) P. de la Rosa - was only filling in for Montoya
(9) J. Trulli
(10) D. Coulthard
(11) M. Webber
(NA) J. Villeneuve - you're fired
(12) R. Kubica
(13) N. Rosberg
(NA) C. Klien - a slow, Spanish car awaits...
(14) V. Liuzzi
--- no more points scorers, so onto the first qualifying session of the new season ---
(15) L. Hamilton - 4th in Australia, needed at least four dropouts to get onto this grid, got five...
(16) T. Sato - 10th in Australia, in a Super Aguri... but let's not forget it was last year's race-winning Honda!

FIRST ROUND - AUSTRALIA
Heat 1 (1 v 16): (1) Alonso (2nd) v (16) Sato (12th)
Heat 2 (2 v 15): (2) Massa (6th) v (15) Hamilton (3rd)
Heat 3 (3 v 14): (3) Fisichella (5th) v (14) Liuzzi (14th)
Heat 4 (4 v 13): (4) Räikkönen (1st) v (13) Rosberg (7th)
Heat 5 (5 v 12): (5) Button (15th) v (12) Kubica (DNF)
Heat 6 (6 v 11): (6) Barrichello (11th) v (11) Webber (13th) - two Honda RA107s in the quarters!
Heat 7 (7 v 10): (7) Heidfeld (4th) v (10) Coulthard (DNF)
Heat 8 (8 v 9): (8) R. Schumacher (8th) v (9) Trulli (9th)

QUARTER FINALS - MALAYSIA
QF 1 (H1 v H8): Alonso (1st) v R. Schumacher (15th)
QF 2 (H2 v H7): Hamilton (2nd) v Heidfeld (4th)
QF 3 (H3 v H6): Fisichella (6th) v Barrichello (11th)
QF 4 (H4 v H5): Räikkönen (3rd) v Button (12th)

SEMI FINALS - BAHRAIN
SF 1 (QF1 v QF4): Alonso (5th) v Räikkönen (3rd)
SF 2 (QF2 v QF3): Hamilton (2nd) v Fisichella (8th)

FINAL - SPAIN
Hamilton (2nd) v Räikkönen (DNF)

...and the Ferrari fans will be ab... so... lutely... FURIOUS! as Murray Walker would say. Lewis Hamilton gets in via the qualifying in Australia having spent the previous season driving in GP2, then comes along and wins Apertura 2007...

APERTURA 2006

(1) F. Alonso
(2) K. Räikkönen
(3) M. Schumacher
(4) J.P. Montoya

SEMI FINALS - AUSTRALIA
SF 1 (QF1 v QF4): Alonso (1st) v Montoya (DNF)
SF 2 (QF2 v QF3): Webber (DNF, 22 laps) v M. Schumacher (DNF, 32 laps)

FINAL - SAN MARINO
M. Schumacher (1st) v Alonso (2nd) - and we all remember how close that one was!

Schumi does the jump on top of the podium. I am fairly certain this was not his first title, and 2004 and 2002 may already be foregone conclusions.

I was planning to do 2005-2000 all in one go, and call it "The Schumacher Years" - only before I knocked off last night I saw 2005 wasn't going to be. For those of you who are wondering how it didn't happen for him in 2005, he retired from the first rce, and Jacques Villeneuve didn't.

I could go through 2004 if you all want, to see how it all panned out, but there's no point; Michael Schumacher won the first five races of the season, which automatically hands him the Apertura title. 2003 might not be so clear-cut, so let's see.

Seedings:
(1) M. Schumacher
(2) Barrichello
(3) Montoya
(4) R. Schumacher
(5) Coulthard
(6) Räikkönen
(7) Button
(8) Trulli
(NA) Irvine - retired to live on a boat in Monaco, probably
(9) Heidfeld
(10) Fisichella
(11) Villeneuve
(NA) Massa - testing for Ferrari
(12) Panis
(NA) Sato - not competing until the last race of the season
(13) Webber
(NA) Salo - retired after the Toyota debacle
(14) Frentzen
------ no more points scorers ------
(15) Alonso - qualified 10th in Australia
(16) da Matta - qualified 16th in Australia

FIRST ROUND - AUSTRALIA
Heat 1 (1 v 16): M. Schumacher (4th) v da Matta (DNF)
Heat 2 (2 v 15): Barrichello (DNF) v Alonso (7th)
Heat 3 (3 v 14): Montoya (2nd) v Frentzen (6th)
Heat 4 (4 v 13): R. Schumacher (8th) v Webber (DNF)
Heat 5 (5 v 12): Coulthard (1st) v Panis (DNF)
Heat 6 (6 v 11): Räikkönen (3rd) v Villeneuve (9th)
Heat 7 (7 v 10): Button (10th) v Fisichella (12th)
Heat 8 (8 v 9): Trulli (5th) v Heidfeld (DNF)

QUARTER FINALS - MALAYSIA
QF 1 (H1 v H8): M. Schumacher (6th) v Trulli (5th)
QF 2 (H2 v H7): Alonso (3rd) v Button (7th)
QF 3 (H3 v H6): Montoya (12th) v Räikkönen (1st)
QF 4 (H4 v H5): R. Schumacher (4th) v Coulthard (DNF)

SEMI FINALS - BRAZIL
SF 1 (QF1 v QF4): Trulli (8th) v R. Schumacher (7th)
SF 2 (QF2 v QF3): Alonso (3rd) v Räikkönen (2nd)

FINAL - SAN MARINO
R. Schumacher (4th) v Räikkönen (2nd)

LIST OF CHAMPIONS:
2003 - Kimi Räikkönen (6)
2004 - Michael Schumacher (1)
2005 - Fernando Alonso (4)
2006 - Michael Schumacher (3)
2007 - Lewis Hamilton (15)

If only Schumacher had retired in the British GP, a Minardi driver would have been World Champion in a Championship that would't consist in eliminating the best!

What'll happen for 1998, since Schumacher's 2nd place in 1997 got wiped? Will he get in at the bottom if he's furthest up on the grid of those with no points for '97?

Alright, I'll start from the beginning: 1950. For practical reasons, the Indy 500 won't be counted, and for matchups where both drivers don't enter, the next to enter a race will advance. In case their next entry is at the same race, then the results at said race will be used. Of course, quali results for the British GP have to decide who qualifies.

Seeds
1. Giuseppe Farina
2. Luigi Fagioli
3. Juan Manuel Fangio
4. Reg Parnell
5. Prince Bira
6. Yves Giraud-Cabantous
7. Eugene Martin
8. Toulo de Graffenried
9. Louis Rosier
10. Peter Walker
11. Louis Chiron
12. Leslie Johnson
13. Bob Gerard
14. Philippe Etancelin
15. Cuth Harrison
16. David Hampshire

Round of 16 - Silverstone
Heat 1 (1 v 16): Giuseppe Farina (1st) v David Hampshire (9th)
Heat 2 (2 v 15): Luigi Fagioli (2nd) v Cuth Harrison (7th)
Heat 3 (3 v 14): Juan Manuel Fangio (DNF, 62 laps) v Philippe Etancelin (8th)
Heat 4 (4 v 13): Reg Parnell (3rd) v Bob Gerard (6th)
Heat 5 (5 v 12): Prince Bira (DNF, 49 laps) v Leslie Johnson (DNF, 2 laps)
Heat 6 (6 v 11): Yves Giraud-Cabantous (4th) v Louis Chiron (DNF, 24 laps)
Heat 7 (7 v 10): Eugene Martin (DNF, 8 laps) v Peter Walker (DNF, 5 laps)
Heat 8 (8 v 9): Toulo de Graffenried (DNF, 36 laps) v Louis Rosier (5th)

Quarterfinals - Monaco
QF 1 (H1 v H8): Giuseppe Farina (DNF, 0 laps, Q 2nd) v Louis Rosier (DNF, 0 laps, Q 10th)
QF 2 (H2 v H7): Luigi Fagioli (DNF, 0 laps) v Eugene Martin (did not enter)
QF 3 (H3 v H6): Philippe Etancelin (DNF, 36 laps) v Yves Giraud-Cabantous (forfeit)
QF 4 (H4 v H5): Reg Parnell (did not enter) v Prince Bira (5th)

Semifinals - Bremgarten
SF 1 (QF 1 v QF 4): Giuseppe Farina (1st) v Prince Bira (4th)
SF 2 (QF 2 v QF 3): Luigi Fagioli (2nd) v Philippe Etancelin (DNF, 25 laps)

Final - Spa
Giuseppe Farina (4th) v Luigi Fagioli (2nd)

consistency is key in this championship, and it showed with Fagioli taking the first ever Apertura!

Best thing to do is try it with Schumacher in his original place and then without. One hour to dinner... I will fill some time that way.

Incidentally, Nigel Mansell is automatically the 1992 Apertura champion, having won the first five races that season. And there should be one or two in the 1950s that also work out that way with Ascari's blinding performances.

Senna would have won the 1991 Apertura aswell.

The Ultimate question is what do you do for the 1994 season? Give the trophy to Senna Posthumously despite him being knocked out in the Round of 16?

Actually, when I think about it, Ascari couldn't win 1952, as he skipped the Swiss GP to concentrate on Indianapolis...

He doesnt count, his disqualification should be treated the same way as a driver retirement or inability to take part due to injury.
Even if you included him he wouldnt have got past the round of 16 anyway, his engine went in Melbourne...

So we had a ruling while I was writing this post. I'll keep it as it is, but show how both 1998 championships would have worked out.

APERTURA 1999

Seedings:
(1) Häkkinen
(2) M. Schumacher
(3) Coulthard
(4) Irvine
(5) Villeneuve
(6) Hill
(7) Frentzen
(8) Wurz
(9) Fisichella
(10) R. Schumacher
(11) Alesi
(12) Barrichello
(NA) Salo - not present at first three races
(13) Diniz
(14) Herbert
(15) Trulli
(NA) Magnussen - rødgrød med fløde
------ no more points scorers ------
(16) Zanardi - qualified 15th in Australia

FIRST ROUND - AUSTRALIA
Heat 1 (1 v 16): Häkkinen (DNF, 21 laps) v Zanardi (DNF, 20 laps) - that was close!
Heat 2 (2 v 15): M. Schumacher (8th) v Trulli (DNF)
Heat 3 (3 v 14): Coulthard (DNF) v Herbert (DNS)
Heat 4 (4 v 13): Irvine (1st) v Diniz (DNF)
Heat 5 (5 v 12): Villeneuve (DNF) v Barrichello (5th)
Heat 6 (6 v 11): Hill (DNF, 0 laps, qualified 9th) v Alesi (DNF, 0 laps, qualified 16th)
Heat 7 (7 v 10): Frentzen (2nd) v R. Schumacher (3rd)
Heat 8 (8 v 9): Wurz (DNF) v Fisichella (4th)

QUARTER FINALS - BRAZIL
QF 1 (H1 v H8): Häkkinen (1st) v Fisichella (DNF)
QF 2 (H2 v H7): M. Schumacher (2nd) v R. Schumacher (4th)
QF 3 (H3 v H6): Coulthard (DNF, 22 laps) v Hill (DNF, 10 laps)
QF 4 (H4 v H5): Irvine (5th) v Barrichello (DNF)

SEMI FINALS - SAN MARINO
SF 1 (QF1 v QF4): Häkkinen (DNF, 17 laps) v Irvine (DNF, 46 laps)
SF 2 (QF2 v QF3): M. Schumacher (1st) v Coulthard (2nd)

FINAL - Monaco
Irvine (2nd) v M. Schumacher (1st)

"Know your place, Eddie!" says the Red Baron.

APERTURA 1998 (with M. Schumacher disqualified from 1997)

Seedings:
(1) Villeneuve
(2) Frentzen
(3) Coulthard
(4) Alesi
(NA) Berger - retired at end of 1997
(5) Häkkinen
(6) Irvine
(7) Fisichella
(8) Panis
(9) Herbert
(10) R. Schumacher
(11) Hill
(12) Barrichello
(13) Wurz
(14) Trulli
(15) Diniz
(16) Salo

...so Schumi senior does *not* get in if his disqualification from 1997 stands. This should make things interesting. But will it affect the overall result?

FIRST ROUND - AUSTRALIA
Heat 1 (1 v 16): Villeneuve (5th) v Salo (DNF)
Heat 2 (2 v 15): Frentzen (3rd) v Diniz (DNF)
Heat 3 (3 v 14): Coulthard (2nd) v Trulli (DNF)
Heat 4 (4 v 13): Alesi (DNF) v Wurz (7th)
Heat 5 (5 v 12): Häkkinen (1st) v Barrichello (DNF)
Heat 6 (6 v 11): Irvine (4th) v Hill (8th)
Heat 7 (7 v 10): Fisichella (DNF, 43 laps) v R. Schumacher (DNF, 1 lap)
Heat 8 (8 v 9): Panis (9th) v Herbert (6th)

QUARTER FINALS - BRAZIL
QF 1 (H1 v H8): Villeneuve (7th) v Herbert (11th)
QF 2 (H2 v H7): Frentzen (5th) v Fisichella (6th)
QF 3 (H3 v H6): Coulthard (2nd) v Irvine (8th)
QF 4 (H4 v H5): Wurz (4th) v Häkkinen (1st)

SEMI FINALS - ARGENTINA
SF 1 (QF1 v QF4): Villeneuve (DNF) v Häkkinen (2nd)
SF 2 (QF2 v QF3): Frentzen (9th) v Coulthard (6th)

FINAL - SAN MARINO
Coulthard (1st) v Häkkinen (DNF)

Now let's take a look at it if we include Schumi in second place in the seedings... Mika Salo misses out.
(1) Villeneuve
(2) M. Schumacher
(3) Frentzen
(4) Coulthard
(5) Alesi
(NA) Berger - retired at end of 1997
(6) Häkkinen
(7) Irvine
(8) Fisichella
(9) Panis
(10) Herbert
(11) R. Schumacher
(12) Hill
(13) Barrichello
(14) Wurz
(15) Trulli
(16) Diniz

...so Schumi senior does *not* get in if his disqualification from 1997 stands. This should make things interesting. But will it affect the overall result?

FIRST ROUND - AUSTRALIA
Heat 1 (1 v 16): Villeneuve (5th) v Diniz (DNF)
Heat 2 (2 v 15): M. Schumacher (DNF, 5 laps) v Trulli (DNF, 26 laps) - so at least we know Schumi won't be winning.
Heat 3 (3 v 14): Frentzen (3rd) v Wurz (7th)
Heat 4 (4 v 13): Coulthard (2nd) v Barrichello (DNF)
Heat 5 (5 v 12): Alesi (DNF) v Hill (8th)
Heat 6 (6 v 11): Häkkinen (1st) v R. Schumacher (DNF)
Heat 7 (7 v 10): Irvine (4th) v Herbert (6th)
Heat 8 (8 v 9): Fisichella (DNF) v Panis (9th)

QUARTER FINALS - BRAZIL
QF 1 (H1 v H8): Villeneuve (7th) v Panis (DNF)
QF 2 (H2 v H7): Trulli (DNF) v Irvine (8th)
QF 3 (H3 v H6): Frentzen (5th) v Häkkinen (1st)
QF 4 (H4 v H5): Coulthard (2nd) v Hill (disq)

SEMI FINALS - ARGENTINA
SF 1 (QF1 v QF4): Villeneuve (DNF) v Coulthard (6th)
SF 2 (QF2 v QF3): Frentzen (9th) v Häkkinen (2nd)

FINAL - SAN MARINO
Häkkinen (DNF) v Coulthard (1st)

So the result is the same - all that changes is David Coulthard's seeding, according to whether Michael Schumacher is allowed to participate or not. ANd we have had the ruling, which means Coulthard was the third seed for the season.

LIST OF CHAMPIONS:
1950 - Luigi Fagioli (2)
...
1991 - Ayrton Senna (1)
1992 - Nigel Mansell (2)

Noted.

The Ultimate question is what do you do for the 1994 season? Give the trophy to Senna Posthumously despite him being knocked out in the Round of 16?

...if he's knocked out, so be it... he didn't get posthumous points for his retirements at Interlagos and Aida. I suppose it's worth working it out with him in the seeds and without, but the result should stand with him in, I'd say.

He doesnt count, his disqualification should be treated the same way as a driver retirement or inability to take part due to injury.
Even if you included him he wouldnt have got past the round of 16 anyway, his engine went in Melbourne...

But, it was close... sort of. I worked it out and he was up against Jarno Trulli, who also scored a DNF... look how Marc Gené got into the 2000 final!

EDIT: dinner calls, but I had time to do one more.

I was doing this rather quickly. And I now see I was looking at the wrong column in the Häkkinen/Berger showdown. Here comes the fixed version...

APERTURA 1994

...what's the point? Michael Schumacher won the first four races, which gives him the title straight away, irrespective of the fate of Saint Senna. Classified 4th in the 1993 championship, Prost retired which seeded him 3rd.

(8) Alboreto
(9) Comas
(10) Wendlinger
(11) Capelli - made the first two races, at least
(NA) Boutsen - Capelli's replacement, so he was sitting out until Brazil. I think that secures Professor Prost's place on the 1993 Apertura grid...
(12) Herbert
(NA) Martini - missed the start of the season for being a naughty boy and driving for a rival team
(NA) Modena - never seen again in F1 after the 1992 Jordan debacle
(13) Fittipaldi
(NA) Gachot
------ no more drivers scored points in 1992 ------

...and I'll bet nobody saw 1993 turning out this way!

LIST OF CHAMPIONS:
1950 - Luigi Fagioli (2)
...
1987 - Nigel Mansell (2)
...
1991 - Ayrton Senna (1)
1992 - Nigel Mansell (2)
1993 - Jean Alesi (6)
1994 - Michael Schumacher (3)

2002 - Michael Schumacher (1)
2003 - Kimi Räikkönen (6)
2004 - Michael Schumacher (1)
2005 - Fernando Alonso (4)
2006 - Michael Schumacher (3)
2007 - Lewis Hamilton (15)
2008 - Kimi Räikkönen (1)
2009 - Timo Glock (10)
2010 - Lewis Hamilton (5)

Right, I suppose I'd better fill in 1988-90 now.

EDIT: Prost is the 1988 champion. With Senna disqualified in the first round, he's out. Prost won rounds 1, 3 and 4, and was second in round 2... to Senna, so he cannot be beaten. Prost was seeded 4th for the 1988 Apertura.

So I'll do 1989 and 1990.

Alright. I've deemed that, to be eligible, a driver must have entered at least two of the four rounds, excluding the Indy 500, whose drivers will not be eligible.

Wanted to go through one of the most fascinating seasons: 1982!

Seedings
1 Piquet
2 Reutemann
3 Laffite
4 Prost
5 Watson
6 Villeneuve
7 de Angelis
8 Arnoux
9 Patrese
10 Cheever
11 Pironi
12 Mansell
13 Giacomelli
14 de Cesaris
15 Borgudd
16 Salazar

Indeed, it was 16 drivers who scored points in 1981 entering first race, so Keke Rosberg is not part of title hunt:
Piquet (DNF) vs Salazar (9th)
Reutemann (2nd) vs Borgudd (16th)
Laffite (DNF) vs de Cesaris (13th)
Prost (1st) vs Giacomelli (11th)
Watson (6th) vs Mansell (DNF)
Villeneuve (DNF) vs Pironi (18th)
de Angelis (8th) vs Cheever (DNF)
Arnoux (3rd) vs Patrese (DNF)

Salazar (DNF, 38 laps) vs Arnoux (DNF, 21 laps)
Reutemann (DNF, 21 laps) vs de Angelis (DNF, 21 laps) Reutemann better placed on previous lap.
de Cesaris (DNF) vs Pironi (6th)
Prost (1st) vs Watson (2nd)

Salazar (DNF, 3 laps) vs Prost (DNF, 10 laps)
Reutemann (retired) vs Pironi (DNF, 6 laps)

Prost (DNF, 6 laps) vs Pironi (1st)

Alles klar. I don't think that affects any that I've worked out, or Bleu's two efforts either. And with Bleu having done 1982, there are some gaps. Better get filling them in, then!

16. Johnny Claes (Q 18)

Go, Jonnny, go, go!

Heat 1 (1 v 16): Giuseppe Farina (3rd) v Johnny Claes (13th)

...never mind.

Final - Silverstone
Giuseppe Farina (DNF, 75 laps) v Luigi Villoresi (3rd)
Another surprise champion, and this one never won a race in his F1 career!

See also Timo Glock in 2009, who won't be changing that statistic this coming year.

Right! Aperturi 1983-86 coming right up! 1983 could be a tricky year with all the turmoil that the 1982 season brought...

Now, this one teaches you that, while you can still count if you enter two rounds, it's better to enter all four, and be reliable. The British GP was Bira's last for the season. He was officially classified in 46th position, between Jan Flinterman and Louis Rosier.

I know, but things would get waaaaayy too complicated in the 1950's. With the elimination of the Indy 500, revolving-door teams and one-offs, things will get a whole lot simpler. Towards 1961, the rules I've set up shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Apertura 2011

Post by dinizintheoven »

No, I hadn't forgotten about the historic Aperturi. I've been busy catching up on the Cricket World Cup (30 days' worth of it over only five days), filling in Census forms, watching the Australian Grand Prix, and also going out and having a life... so, I will now fill in the rest of the 1970s. Here's where it gets complicated with one-off drives, and the unfortunate occupational hazard of drivers being a lot more likely to be killed than in the present era.

tommykl wrote:Alright. I've deemed that, to be eligible, a driver must have entered at least two of the four rounds, excluding the Indy 500, whose drivers will not be eligible.

This does present a bit of a problem, actually - if we weren't doing this retrospectively, there'd be no way of knowing who was going to compete in the second race and who wasn't, so for all these I'm counting any driver who made it to the first race, and if it's a no-show for any of the others that means an instant knockout, hard luck!

And once more into the pit we go...

APERTURA 1984

FIRST ROUND - BRAZIL

Heat 5 (5 v 12): Rosberg (2nd) v Mansell (DNF)

QUARTER FINALS - SOUTH AFRICA
