The Retirements Championship

Post by Jeroen Krautmeir »

In this championship, people who retired from the race score points. The race winner is the first retirement of that race. Drivers who retire but are classified do not count. DNS' do not count either.

2010

Vitantonio Liuzzi- 137 (5 Wins)
Kamui Kobayashi- 136 (3 Wins, 2 2nds, 1 3rd)
Bruno Senna- 128 (1 Win, 2 2nds, 2 3rds)
Jarno Trulli- 109 (1 Win, 2 2nds, 1 3rd)
Lucas di Grassi- 91 (1 Win, 1 2nd)
Timo Glock- 86 (1 Win, 1 3rd)
Pedro de la Rosa- 81 (1 2nd, 3 3rds)
Sébastien Buemi- 77 (1 Win, 2 3rds)
Nico Hülkenberg- 70 (1 Win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Heikki Kovalainen- 56 (2 2nds)
Vitaly Petrov- 56 (1 2nd)
Mark Webber- 43 (1 Win, 1 2nd)
Karun Chandhok- 40 (1 Win, 1 3rd)
Nico Rosberg- 40 (1 Win, 1 3rd)
Robert Kubica- 38 (1 2nd)
Jaime Alguersuari- 37 (1 Win)
Lewis Hamilton- 36 (1 2nd)
Adrian Sutil- 34 (1 2nd)
Michael Schumacher- 33 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jenson Button- 33 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Rubens Barrichello- 31 (1 Win)
Sebastian Vettel- 25 (1 3rd)
Felipe Massa- 15 (1 3rd)
Sakon Yamamoto- 15 (1 3rd)
Fernando Alonso- 12
Christian Klien- 10
Nick Heidfeld- 6

Kobayashi stormed ahead at the beginning of the season, with Senna his closest challenger. However, nobody would have predicted the charge by Tonio Liuzzi at the end of the season! Winning the last 3 races of the season, he pipped Kamui by a point to win the championship!

Drivers Champion- Vitantonio Liuzzi
Constructors' Cup- Sauber
Manufacturers' Cup- Cosworth
Rookie of the Year- Kamui Kobayashi

2009

Heikki Kovalainen- 38 (3 Wins)
Sébastien Buemi- 38 (2 Wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jaime Alguersuari- 35 (1 Win, 2 2nds, 1 3rd)
Adrian Sutil- 32 (2 Wins, 2 3rds)
Kazuki Nakajima- 27 (1 Win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jarno Trulli- 27 (1 Win, 1 2nd)
Sébastien Bourdais- 26 (1 Win, 2 2nds)
Sebastian Vettel- 22 (1 Win, 2 3rds)
Fernando Alonso- 21 (1 Win, 1 2nd)
Robert Kubica- 21 (2 2nds)
Romain Grosjean- 20 (2 Wins)
Mark Webber- 15 (1 Win)
Nelson Piquet, Jr.- 14 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Nick Heidfeld- 13 (1 2nd)
Felipe Massa- 13 (1 2nd)
Lewis Hamilton- 13 (1 2nd)
Kimi Räikkönen- 11 (1 2nd)
Giancarlo Fisichella- 10 (1 Win)
Rubens Barrichello- 8 (1 2nd)
Jenson Button- 6 (1 3rd)
Vitantonio Liuzzi- 5
Nico Rosberg- 4

The cars of 2009 were terribly unreliable (reliable), explaining the low number of points scored. Heikki Kovalainen was challenged by Kazuki Nakajima early on, and then Bourdais. After Bourdais' surprise sacking, the main challenger became Buemi, who finished second overall, level on points, but behind due to Heikki having 3 wins. Romain Grosjean won on his debut, and won another race in Singapore, but other than those wins, he was unspectacular.

Drivers Champion- Heikki Kovalainen
Constructors' Cup- Toro Rosso
Manufacturers' Cup- Ferrari
Rookie of the Year- Sébastien Buemi

ROFL. Alguersuari does well in 2009 considering he only did less than half the season!

2008

Sébastien Bourdais- 55 (3 Wins, 2 2nds, 1 3rd)
Adrian Sutil- 55 (1 Win, 2 2nds, 3 3rds)
Giancarlo Fisichella- 48 (3 Wins, 1 3rd)
Sebastian Vettel- 48 (2 Wins, 3 2nds)
Nelson Piquet Jr.- 48 (2 Wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
David Coulthard- 39 (3 Wins, 1 2nd)
Jenson Button- 31 (1 Win, 1 2nd)
Timo Glock- 26 (1 Win, 2 2nds)
Rubens Barrichello- 24 (2 2nds, 1 3rd)
Mark Webber- 18 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Heikki Kovalainen- 17 (1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Jarno Trulli- 16 (1 WinF
Fernando Alonso- 15 (1 Win)
Anthony Davidson- 10 (1 3rd)
Kazuki Nakajima- 9 (1 3rd)
Lewis Hamilton- 8 (1 2nd)
Kimi Räikkönen- 6 (1 3rd)
Felipe Massa- 5
Nico Rosberg- 4
Robert Kubica- 2

This was too close to call. At the beginning, the two Toro Rossos were definitely the car to beat, with the two Sebastians' racking up the wins and podiums. Unfortunately for them, Force India, a new team, came up with an upgrade that boosted their performances significantly. Adrian Sutil was the more impressive of the two FI drivers, although Fisichella was also excellent. David Coulthard and Nelson Piquet jr had good charges late in the season, but it was too late for them to challenge. In the end, it came to the last race in Brazil, but only two cars finished! Coulthard taking the win ahead of Piquet. With that, Bourdais and Sutil ended tied on points, with the Frenchman winning the title thanks to more wins. Fisichella, Vettel and Piquet found themselves even with 48 points.

PS: Crashgate still happens, since Piquet was the first retirement and Alonso won the race in RL. Just switch the events! :D

Drivers Champion- Sébastien Bourdais

And Nick Heidfeld has no points whatsoever, he can't even win a race in this format.

2007

Scott Speed- 52 (3 Wins, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Mark Webber- 51 (2 Wins, 2 2nds, 2 3rds)
Adrian Sutil- 42 (3 2nds, 2 3rds)
David Coulthard- 41 (1 Win, 3 3rds)
Vitantonio Liuzzi- 40 (1 Win, 1 2nd, 2 3rds)
Jenson Button- 37 (3 2nds)
Christijan Albers- 33 (2 Wins)
Anthony Davidson- 31 (1 Win, 1 2nd, 1 3rd)
Alexander Wurz- 29 (2 Wins)
Ralf Schumacher- 27 (1 Win, 1 3rd)
Giancarlo Fisichella- 20 (2 Wins)
Jarno Trulli- 20 (1 Win, 1 3rd)
Sakon Yamamoto- 18 (1 Win, 1 2nd)
Sebastian Vettel- 17 (1 2nd)
Robert Kubica- 15 (1 3rd)
Nico Rosberg- 15 (1 3rd)
Rubens Barrichello- 10 (1 2nd)
Takuma Sato- 10
Felipe Massa- 8 (1 2nd)
Fernando Alonso- 8 (1 2nd)
Lewis Hamilton- 5
Kimi Räikkönen- 5
Nick Heidfeld- 5
Heikki Kovalainen- 3
Markus Winkelhock- 3

This was another interesting year. Christijan Albers was arguably the best driver from the beginning, but Scott Speed also put up a considerable challenge. These two fought it out until Albers was fired, whilst leading the championship! The Dutchman was replaced by Markus Winkelhock, who scored pole, but failed to make an impact in the race. Winkelhock was then replaced by Sakon Yamamoto, who won on his debut, but otherwise failed to impress. Scott Speed then found himself without a challenger, and strolled to 2 wins and a few podiums, only to be then replaced by Sebastian Vettel! Mark Webber, seeing an opportunity, had a late season charge, but eventually fell a point short of breaking even with Speed. So kudos to Scott Speed, 2007 Formula One World Champion! (who will never be seen on track again)

Drivers Champion- Scott Speed
Constructors' Cup- Toro Rosso
Manufacturers' Cup- Ferrari
Rookie of the Year- Adrian Sutil

2006, undoubtedly the best season that the Williams team has ever had, and the FW28 the best and most reliable car they've ever produced.

That year was really a nightmare for Williams, wasn't it?

That's a big surprise, I always thought HWNSNBM was much more reliable than Bruni that year!

If I read that correctly, HWNSNBM's only points scores were his podiums. That means he was reliable, but when he retired, it was early in the race.

I was going to ask how Rubens was so low, as he suffered the brunt of all Ferrari's bad reliability early in the year, then I twigged most of him non-finishes were also non-starts! :)

Also, thanks to mass crash in Melbourne he was the worst of first-lap DNFs as he started the race from pole.
